What does a solid red LED mean when 'charging'? - G1 General

I think i have a brick, adn the only thing that it will do is that the LED will light up solid red when I plug it into the wall...
I can't find any info on what that red light really means... hopefully its just "really dead trashed battery"...

my unbricked g1 does this when it's simply charging...

I see only marginal humor in that...
Mine always did a yellow/orange light when charging....

Solid red means the phone is charging while off.

From my experience, I actually think it is red when you run it below 20% or something like that, then it turns orange when it is in mid-charge and full green above 90%

When the phone is ON:
Green=85-100%
Orange=25-85%
Red=0-25%
When phone is OFF:
Red=0-99%
Green=100%

if your phone didn't charge then i would see that you might have a problem.
red, orange, green... kinda like a stoplight. get the picture?
if your phone shutdown during your use and was due to no more charge in the battery, then you plug it in, it'll most definitely be a red light when charging because you have little to no charge left in the battery.

How long for first charge before use? I am impatient :-)

Just got it from Expansys (imate version) about an hour and a half ago.
Book says charge for 8 hours, and the LED has gone yellow from orange (meaning charged I take it)
I am dying to play, so how long does it really need to charge for?
Also, where can I buy insurance for it?
Thx guys and gals
Joe
Leave it on over night is what I do.
Manual actually states that you either charge it till its max or leave it 8 hours on. Since it has turned yellow, it means it can charge no more, so go ahead and start playin away!!!
UD.
Yellow?
My LED goes green when fully charged, and orange when charging.
Yeah, I have this debate with my girlfriend. I reckon it's a greeny-yellow, and she feels it's green.
Definitely not the orange tho :lol:
personaly i would leave it for 8hours
my xda1 and 2 went green after 15mins of charging
and when i tried to use the xda1 after that the battery was acting in a peculiar way
Crap! Sorry, i meant GREEN!!!
UD.

charging light - Does anyone elses g1 do this

the charging light goes green even though is says 92% it still charges the battery but I think once it gets to 90% the light turns green kind of annoying.
what the hay?
lol I've had mine for awhile but I just noticed that today, which makes me think some recent updates are responsible. It does seem to turn green at 90%.
wish i could say that i have had this problem but im sure i will come tuesday. Once mine is delivered
I have the same problem here. At least i think i do, when i was charging my G1 yesterday after about 30 mins the light went green. I know it wasn't fully charged and left it alone.
yeah it turns green after 90% dont know why?
there might be a logical reason for this.
It's normal, mine does it too. I wouldn't think too much of it. It probably goes green just to indicate a high (> 90%) battery charge level, nobody promised it would go green at exactly 100%.
just what i've noticed... red low charging, orange medium charging, and green high charging. i agree, it's stupid for it to turn green at 90%. maybe it should flash green upon fully charged. and yes mine seems to hang at 99% for quite a while before 100%.
mine has always done that. I got mine at RC30.

mine also does that, noticed it last night when i was charging the phone and turned it on and it said 92 percent and the light was still green. It did manage to reach 100 percent charge with it still green, with no indication of a FULL charge. Who knows maybe they knew how bad the battery was on it so they did that?
This looks like it may have been something that was put in with RC30. If you look at the OP it was posted on 19-10-2008, 07:10 PM. Someone just bumped up a really old post.
For once, it's nice to be color blind Did not even notice!
It's the same behavior I've noticed since I got the phone (R19). I always understood the green charging light to mean "pretty close to full in case you wanna hit the road." What I don't like is, when charging, the status light doesn't blink when there's a notification.
i think it does this one other htc phones also, its no big deal to me i just wish that there was a more accurate battery icon instead of that 4 or 5 stage garbage that it is now, should change every 5% not every 20%
Ive Had this happen to me b4 and tried turning off the phone and charging only to get a red light as though it was really drained
This has to do with the way lithium-ion batteries are charged.
They can be charged very quickly up to a point, and then must be charged more slowly. Basically a constant current mode followed by a constant voltage mode.
The light, I assume/hope, is accurately reflecting the charge mode.
Once it goes green, you know that you can take it off charge, and have at least 70% to 90% of a full charge.
First result from a Google search took me to this:

Pretty good explanation.

Dead battery? light flashes from orange to green repeatedly

i purchased one of those backup batteries on ebay from china, after about 2 weeks it came in.
upon opening it i compared it to my battery, the new one said htc inovation on it but looked like a knock off counterfit to me. so before ever putting it in my phone i put it in the included charger and started charging it. once it was complete i tried changing batteries and as soon as i put it in my nexus one the little led at the top right started flashing from green to orange, the screen wouldnt even flicker. as long as this battery was in, even if i plugged it in it would do this. i left it plugged in over night.
i really dont wanna wait for a new one so im wondering if there is a way i could fix it. im going out on a limb and suspecting that the charger that came with it is the problem, as it seems to be some weird universal charger. so for the past few days ive had a led attached to the battery and it still i not dead. once its completely dead im going to try to charge it with my nexus.
any other ideas/insight you guys can give?
I know you can get a bit of info from /sys/kernel/debug/battery_log
I'm not 100% sure on how exactly to interpret that though.
I've also had what i assume is a dud battery from ebay. Exactly the same issue - flashing orange/green LED. I'm waiting for them to ship a replacement. I guess I'm not really that surprised. It's not like it's a genuine battery. I was kind of expecting problems with it i guess.
yeah it reminds me of those fake louie vutton purses you see on the streets in big cities, says htc on it but i doubt htc had anything to do with making it.
i bought one just like it for my g1 a year ago and it worked fine, still works to this day with no noticable difference from the legit one that i got it with.
i got a refund but i hate to let it go to waste i wanna try to fix it. when i hook it up to the led it shines so its obviously giving power, but every few seconds or so the led flashes, im not sure if this is the battery or the fact that i have the led taped to the diodes lol.
did you get one of those universal battery chargers with yours? i got one that you have to slide the connectors to fit the battery and i have a feeling its about as high quality as the battery. im wondering if that had anything to do with it?
that's what mine did when it got dunked in water....
did you dunk the whole phone or just the battery?
ive noticed that the phone flashes from orange to green if you try to turn it on while its plugged in without a battery in. perhaps it means insufficient power?
just a heads up, i put the new battery i got into the charger that was included in my first backup batty the charger is this one from this same seller
http://cgi.ebay.com/Multi-Purpose-B...wItemQQptZPDA_Accessories?hash=item3efc5b5855
not only did it destroy the new battery but it melted part of it after litterally 10 minutes of charging.
BEWARE of that charger and probably that seller as well
it probably would have burned my house down if i had not smelled it before walking out the door

Dead Nexus 4

unfortunatly my Nexus 4 fell into water and Iv'e tried the rice trick and it didn't helped. now after few weeks when I plug it to the charger I get a solid yellow notification light (sometimes it gets red too).
I just wondered what does it mean. it says the phone is just dead?
How long did you charge it?
Yellow light normally suggests it's charging. Let it charge for 3-4 hours and then see. But before this make sure that there is not water inside the phone.

I didn't actually tried to let it charge I 'll try it now.
it just light up when I plug the phone in. it's more orange light but the first time I plugged the phone it was red.
I replaced the battery yesterday from my friend's nexus 4 and it's still the same (the battery was half charged on his phone).
but the phone can be dead even though the battery charging right?

How does one know its charging rapidly?

Also, look at the battery icon in the top right. It changes to a lightning bolt. If not, it stays as a battery icon.
