Hi,
Since some days I am facing this problem. The Wizard hangs.
The green light towards the top blinks fine.
But when I press the power button, the phone does not start.
I do not get the display.
I am unable to receive calls too.
I tried keeping the power button pressed for more than 10 sec. No effect.
Finally, I have to remove the battery and put it in again.
Then the phone starts fine. I need to reset the date and time.
This has been happening very 2-3 days.
The worst part is I do not come to know when this happens. Its only when people tell me that I an not reachable, I realize that the phone is hung.
I have not installed / uninstalled / added or removed any hardware, software in the past 6 months.
What could be the problem ?

Do a Hard Reset,although you'll loose all your personal data,contacts,messages etc,but your phone will be reset to factory defaults.But if it doesn't work out,you'll have to flash it again.

No, pressing a pin or stylus in the little hole underneath infa red sensor will only 'Soft Reset' the phone. To perform 'Hard Reset',do the following :-
1. Press and hold the Comm Manager button and Voice Command button on the phone.
2. Keep the two button's pressed,and at the same time,use the stylus to lightly press and hold the 'Reset' button,underneath the infra red sensor
The phone will shut down and wake up again,on wake up it'll display an option,press the 'Send' button to perform.
Secondly,if you want to upgrade to a newer Rom,you must post the vital data of your phone (IPL/SPL...? Make & Model...?, Rom version...?) to determine the DOC chip version of the phone,only then a proper advise is possible,ok

Lets say its crashing on boot. What is the key combination to hard reset it?

My wizard froze on reset after i installed pocketplus 3 - has to use the hard reset method mentioned above, works a treat.

go into "setting" and then icon Spb Pocket Plus, and bottem feature on menu is safe mode, un-tick it.

Update: on my I-Mate K-Jam (ITA) I was not able to perform any HARD RESET with keys.... (screen never going black, not after minutes !!!).
I had to use an util provided with the K-Jam "reset memory", which asked me to type 1234 and the confirm before performing...
Just my 2 cents...

For newbies like me i push up again this thread.
Again, there are two methods available to perform a hard reset of your HTC Wizard. The first method is the easiest, but seems to be the least known method:
* Open the Start menu
* Select Settings
* Select the tab System
* Select Clear Storage
* You will now be prompted with a warning about the consequences of a hard reset, and will be asked to copy a word into a form and to confirm by pressing the left Soft Button
The first method is only availalbe when your HTC Wizard is functioning correctly. If that is not the case, a second method using only hardware buttons is available:
* Press and hold both the Comm Mannager Button and the Voice Command Button
* While keeping those two buttons pressed, press the Reset Button with your stylus
* After about a second you will be prompted for confirmation. Press the Talk Button to confirm
This method is tested and works on Qtek 9100, I-mate K-JAM, MDA Vario, Orange SPV M3000, O2 XDA Mini S, Dopod 838, Cingular 8125.

this is a known bug on 9100, I also had to HARD RESET. there was already such topic, find it, there is a solution there too. HARD reset by holdin the buttons on both upper sides (comm manager and voice command) - it will vibrate, then press and hold RESET button for 5 sec
I´m sorry, but when i press the 2 buttons it doesn´t vibrate, else i push the reset during 5 seconds but it is the same.

hmm, why don't you see in the printed manual, page 80. It reads:
To perform a hard reset
1. Press and hold the Comm Manager button and Voice Command
button on the device.
2. Keep the two buttons pressed, and at the same time, use the
stylus to lightly press and hold the RESET button.

I have read the manual, and i´m doing exactly it says.
The solution for me was:
1. Press and hold the Comm Manager button and Voice Command
button on the device.
2. Keep the two buttons pressed, and at the same time, use the

and the release the stylus and 2 seconds later release the 2 buttons.
Now i uninstalled the fu**ing Pocket plus.
ur not alone, it got me too.
Mine however would not hard reset, had to use the bootloader to re-flash the rom! The air was getting pretty blue......

PocketPlus3 works beautifully with the wizard in all but one area - the Safe Mode.
For some reason the switch to WM5 buggers this up so what you need to do is this:
1) Install Pocket Plus 3 to your device.
2) Start > Settings > 'System' Tab > Spb Pocket Plus.
3) Scroll down the little list and uncheck the 'Safe Mode' box.
4) Soft-reset and be happy

Yes I also confirm that I have it running after the mentioned above problems . I think it is worth having, just uncheck the SAFE MODE box immediately after installing SPB and before any resets...
Oh oh, I am really in problems now. I think I have the same problem with Pocket Plus, and my MDA Vario does not start up any more. I only see the bootscreen. After doing a hard reset I see horizontal coloured bars and that's it???!!!!

How do I get out of this missery?
I use SPB PP + 3.0.4 with safe mode switched on without any problem. During boot is shows dialog what to do if you want safe mode (but i've never used safe mode yet) and device starts well.

I installed SPB Pocket Plus, then I reboot, since then my mobile stops in the boot screen.
Is there a way to boot in safe mode? (I tryied to boot holding the two upper buttons, failed.)
Is there a way to format the mobile before booting?
If I need to reinstall EVERYTHING, how do I do it? Using the USB cable? Where do I get the ROM? How do I procede installing the rom?

Additionally, if you can still connect to your desktop by USB Cable, you should be able to remove the offending software with ActiveSync without hard-reseting.

that's how i did it:
Plug the device on power
Turn on your device
1. Press simultaneously the 2 upper buttons (comm. & voice) and keep them pressed
2. After 3 s press the soft reset button and keep it pressed for 3 s, (comm. & voice are still pressed)
3. Release soft reset button., (comm. & voice are still pressed)
4. Don’t release comm. & voice buttons until you see on the black screen some Instructions to format your drive.
5. release comm. & voice buttons
6. press call button to start format your drive.

I've a problem with my phone : my dizitalizer screen is out of run and i have been done a hard reset of my phone.
Now the message "tap your screen to set your preferences..." (or something lika that) appears on the screen. Is there a solution to bypass this step or not to see this message after a soft reset ?

Sorry to be the bringer of bad news but, "Tap the screen" means just that.
Whats wrong with the screen?
And just for your info, a soft reset is either:
1. Hold Power button longer that 15 secs and turn off / back on.
2. Pressing the recessed button on the right hand side.
A Hard reset is when you hold both the Comm button and Voice button at the same time and reset using the indented button. Keep them held while the device cycles and the reset screen appears.

I look for a way to bypass this step because it's physically impossible for me to do the operation.

a solution
i think i've found a solution. the problem is the software 'welcome' that is in the startup folder of windows. Is there a way to remove it from the rom ?

Well, people do cook their own roms. Xelencin and summiter do so regularly. moyofalaye has done so too. The welcome screen is part of the ROM as opposed to the extended rom, so that it is a more involved thing to remove it. On the other hand, I am sick and tired of changing my appointment with Dr. Johnson and would welcome a ROM that avoided that part.
Hi, a helpfull friend has set the WM5 password to strong alphanumeric and has forgotten it,or just wont tell me what it is. Can anyone tell me, how can I get around this to get MDA Vario working again?

I think a hard reset may fix.
But I am not to sure.
I have tried that, device is still coming up with password request.
All I can think of is flashing it with a new ROM but if it goes bad it could kill the device and I am not sure it would remove it but in theory it should. Other members may have some hacks to fix it.
A hard reset will definitely remove the password, maybe you are just soft resetting the device.
I have tried as says in manual many times, it comes back up with the password screen every time.
I can only try it with MDA:
Turned off
Turned on with password screen illuminated
Manual says:
88 Managing Your MDA Vario
To perform a hard reset
1. Press and hold the Comm Manager button and Voice Command button on
the device.
2. Keep the two buttons pressed, and at the same time, use the stylus to lightly

Sounds like you are doing the reset wrong....
Hard resets are awkward - hold in the two top side buttons, press the reset and keep holding the top two buttons after you have removed the stylus from the reset hole. About four seconds should do it.

you'll know if you got it because you'll get a black screen with white lettering that says "press send to format" or the like
otherwise its just a soft reset. On an older ipaq I had, if I had a password it would ask on teh PC everytime I synched. This was with PPC 2003. I'm not sure if you'll still have a problem when you try to sync your data though.

Bilbo_28 & others - You were right, I was not doing a hard reset properly and getting only the soft reset.
It seems after doing it a few times, that the hard reset instructions in the manual should read something like:
hold in the two top side buttons, both the send and receive buttons leds should come on and stay lit.
Insert the stylus in the reset hole and observe both send and receive buttons extinguish
remove the stylus from the reset hole and keep holding the two top side buttons until:
The screen goes black and the following message appears:
Press send to restore
factory default,
Other keys to quit
Release the top two side buttons
Then press SEND to restore factory default
or press any other key to abort hard reset
I think an e-mail to T-Mobile telling them to update the manual would not go amiss !!

Wow. I was doing the hard reset wrong. I had the same password problem. But now its stuck on the "align screen" menu wth? It moves the cursor around the screen and yet it comes back to the menu. I've run through it at least 10 times now
