Can DUN be ported to WM6? - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

Hi,
I used to use Dial Up Networking to access TomTom plus services on my Go 910 through my Hermes, but as we well know, MS has replaced this feature with ICS as of AKU 3 onwards. I'm now using WM6 and don't want to go back.
I found this blog on MSDN. Apparently DUN may reappear in WM6 .... one day ... if the operators choose to include it...
http://blogs.msdn.com/windowsmobile/archive/2007/04/17/why-did-we-remove-bluetooth-dun.aspx
Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone had looked into ways to port DUN from a pre-AKU 3 version of WM5 into WM6. Is it just a bunch of dlls a few registry settings, or is this functionality very intertwined in the OS and hard to transport?
I don't want to duplicate work, so if anyone has looked into this already please let me know. Also let me know if you think this would be a worthwhile project. If no one else has done this, I'd be happy to give it a try.
Thanks

It can't be hacked on the Registry level - see my related remarks in my article on all these q's.
That is, simple registry hacking won't work.

Thanks. Your very good article answers most of my questions. (not what I hoped to hear unfortunately).
One thing is still not clear in my mind though: Is this functionality solely a dependency of the (upgraded) MS BT stack and not the OS itself? If so, is it available in, say, the Widcomm stack and could one get DUN functionality back on a WM6 ROM by using the Widcomm stack instead of the Microsoft one?

??New versions *W*M*2*0*0*3*??

Hello,
does anyone know when the final version of W*M*2*0*0*3 will be released? And when it will be available to us? Was it released by Microsoft, yet?
I hope it will solve problems with memory card erasures and missing "More" tab in Phone Settings...
Thank you.
The "missing more tab" is merely missing because one does not need to change bands on 900/1800 phones: US versions will have this tab, I'm sure.
What I am not so sure about is how much pressure from the customers there is to bring WM2003 to this unit, with the XDA II coming and all.
probaly lots of pressure... but no inclination from the relevent(sp?) parties...
As if they would listen to us anyways? I mean we already know how *helpful* O2 are in the 'after care' department so what chance is there of them bringing out a rom?
From my experience of their compilation and testing of previous roms the development department must be VERY under funded as it is.
I think all 3 of them will be working overtime to prepare 2003 for the XDAII and wont really care about those that have already provided their cash...
one glimmer of hope I think is that the XDAII has the same rom size as the XDA... therefore will it be possible to 'borrow' the rom from that and put it in the XDA ? .... or will they take 3 months of their project management to impliment restrictions and locks on the device... (time they could have spent porting it to the XDA)
I'm sure I'll prolly buy one... the pretty colours dazzle me.... but I hear Intel are planning a new Xscale cpu for 2004.... which is meant to be a lot better than this one... so will our brand new xdaII be dead as roadkill by the same time next year?
and I just had a thought.... the current XDAII cpu is an Xscale... and the XDA is a strongarm.... so there goes the 'borrowing' idea :?
yes I type while I think..
yes I dont delete text I decide is wrong before posting
XDA developer Peter Poelman:
I want the "More" tab to setup Cell Broadcast and auto pick-up - those settings were on this tab too.
ALL:
So you think that it'll be hard to get the final release? That defines a question - where is the kitchen rom from? It's a silly question, I know... But if you want to answer, send me an private message.
Thanx
Correction - If you want to give me an answer...
Sorry for my english...
It would appear that the version we have is OEM
the T-mobile branding I'm not so sure about maybe its a beta internal release inside T-mobile.
Remember though that just because they have it.... doesnt mean we will.
There is even a Apple OSX for Intel machines... Apple has currently no intentions of releasing it but does have 8 developers slowly working away
AOL for linux ? yes there was one..... but apart from the early beta which has since disapeared nobody has heard anything about it since.
Stranger things have happened (or have not as the case seems to be here)
Ok 2 things here. For the person wanting the "More" tab on the phone settings, which ROM version are you using? I am using 4.00.16, and it is in there. Perhaps this is not part of the ROM version, but depends on what radio stack is being used?
Secondly, I wouldn't be too surprised to at least see a T-Mobile release of WM 2003, but I also wouldn't guarantee it. They have released - ok not released - but a couple different betas have become "available" so we know they are working on it. I should say we know they were working on it. No telling now, as no new betas have appeared since June or July.
The person who wanted the "More" Tab was me I use 4.00.11 and don't want to install 4.00.16 until there will be a "clear" version without T-Mobile add-ons. The "More" tab must be part of the ROM because it is a part of system! I have radio stack 4.21. My boyfriend has the same version of radio stack, but PPC2002 and he has the "More" Tab.
About the new versions of those betas - maybe they have it better secured?

if you installed a based ROM, meaning no add-on software or not cook with the kitchen, there will be a more tab on you setting, but if you add some software to the ROM the setting for the more tab will be overiden, anyway you can still setup this thing in the registry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel... the setting for keylock is there and also for the setting of automatic answer is there, just change the value.

Bluejacking with WM5

I'm trying to bluejack with my M2000 running WM5. I've tryed various software but none of it works, Dose anyone know of any software that will do this? I used to be able to do it in WM2003 just by sending contacts via bluetooth.
Thanks in advance WWWeed........
I would love to find a good pocket pc program that could automaticly bluejack people.on my old P800 i use a program called s-man that does a constant scan for other phones and then sends a message to them over and over again
why would people want to do that ?

for educational purposes.....
there is such a program, i've used it on my old c500 and my jasjar, it's called smurf, I forget the link, but google it and ye shall find. btw it's freeware and does auto bluejacking
STUNNING, STUNNING, thanks for the smurf heads up, you are a star!
doesnt work ir searches devices and then shows an error and quits =(( help
link
Here's the link:
http://www.gatefold.co.uk/smurf/
(download is below on the page)
Looks nice btw
And you need the Microsoft Bluetooth stack for this one,
finally 'Jack's Back on WM5'
its true, i can blue jack onedevices and then as soon as it trys again-it just comes up with and error, i wish we had a version of S-man (from p800/P9XX)
if anyone know of some better software then please to tell 8)
Ok im bored with Smurf, there must be a better software out there, i would like to do some blue snarfing for fun, does anyone know of anything better out there?
http://www.inventop.com/proximitymailsetup.exe
i havn't tested it yet,it might be the right stuff
no such luck, im sure it would work on the M1000/M2000, on my M5000 it just says it cant find a bluetooth stack so forget that download
can sum1 please post a cab for the the .net compact v.2 thanks!
the file for compact framework v2 is http://msdn.microsoft.com/netframework/programming/netcf/downloads/default.aspx
thats from the microsoft web page just click the top link and then download the msi file and it will add it to your activesync for next time you sync up
I cant believe that there is still not a good bluejacking program out there for WM5, or windows mobil all together, how come symbian have loads of REALY good ones and we have like 1 and thats not that good either, i rekon someone is holding out and there is a great on efor us out there!.
Anyone?
bluejacking...
Hold your breath...
I'm currently implementing bluejacking in btCrawler.
It's already working for PPC but I need a few more days to put everything up for Smartphones...
You will be able to send messages AND files!
You can for example create your own "special" version 3 vcard including a photo or sound and then send it with btCrawler.
I'm also planning to implement something like a proximity mode. When a device comes in range a predefined automessage or file is sent...
however, link is: http://www.silentservices.de/btCrawler.html
Blujacking?
What is it? I've heard of Bluetooth...but not blujacking. Sounds like something dirty when you talk about Smurfs and blujacking....LOL
Try Sniper... (M$ bluetooth stack req'd)

Bluejacking is the practise of sending text or files to other bluetooth compatible devices that support OBEX push. Most people think it has something to do with Hijacking, but infact it's just named after the guy who came up with it named Jack. Bluejacking in not "Hijacking" or "Hacking" in any sense, you can only push, not pull.
Cornholio you are a star!, i didn't relise you had been making this program, you should start a thread to see if many people are interested!, i will try it out, have you tryed using Sman.sis on a sony Ericsson phone, its very good-it might give you a few ideas.
Oink i have got sniper-it seems a bit slow and fragile but i havnt tested it enough to give a good appion so my mind might change

AKU3.2 A2DP Patch

Does anyone know of anyone successfully extracting, the apparently improved, A2DP BT stack from AKU3.2 for use on the Prophet?
Thanks to this forum, the particularly the ROM updates (LVSW 2.3 currently although I haven’t tried Jester’s yet) my Prophet is running superbly. I just wish the A2DP quality with my iTech S38 was equal to that on my old Magician. I’ve tried the SampleRate and BitPool registry tweaks with minimal success – still very apparent ringing and muddiness to the sound :-(
I guess this is effectively a plea to LVSW and Jester since my searches to-date have drawn a blank and my current skills certainly aren't up to extracting it…
Thanks in advance

I will have a look, but at first glance the a2dp files from 2.3 and 3.2 look the same.
Thanks Jesterz, that would be most appreciated. Any new information would be useful.
On a more general note how is your AKU3.2 ROM coming along. Is there anything we can do to help?
Regards
Jeff
To explain I'm pinning my hopes on better A2DP based on a previously referenced article:
http://www.mobile-review.com/pda/articles/wm-aku-en.shtml - AKU3.0 "Bluetooth connectivity has gotten enhanced as well: from now on it supports FTP profile, better handles A2DP, whose quality gave rise to criticism lately."
Jesterz,
Any time frames on when your complete "clean" AKU3.2 ROM will become available for testing?
Regards
Jeff

as soon as I "unbrick" my G3 (working on it now) i will have both a G3 and a G4 for testing this ROM, right now i run an internal beta on my own G4, it's ok, however as has been mentioned before on these forums, there is stuff missing from the ROM, for example, the bluetooth FTP is missing.
please remember that my rom is basicly the pdamobiz 3.2 ROM, however, taken out ALL the "junk" software, and I'm now trying to piece together which drivers/programs should be in the ROM, it's a lot of work.
What I would probably do, is fine an HTC device that has an official AKU 3.x ROM, rip it and compair, move over software.
drivers will be a problem, as they have to be for the prophet, but I can maybe use the 2.2 ones, I don't know yet
In any case, I'm learning as I go along and hope to have a public beta out soon.
AKU 3.3
Jesterz, could you take a look to see if there are new A2DP files in the AKU3.3 ROM, please?
The usual three suspects - Avrcp_MPplugin.dll, bta2dp.dll and sbc.dll.
Thanks!

They SEEM newer, however, please be reminded that these drivers come from a totally different device.
right now I can't even boot the AKU3.3, i'm still moving drivers around.
I'm running AKU 3.2 in my Universal and noticed the A2DP sound quality is the same, not better in anyway compared to my Prophet which is running AKU 2.3.
lie_ui
Well, AKU 3.3 comes from a device that uses an OMAP-750, so it's pretty close.
And I really do hope they fixed the BT sound problem in AKU 3.3. MS should be aware of the issue by now.
How do you install the files?
So I was able to extract the files from AKU 3.3 (!!!), but how do you install them? Have to use a CAB file? Or I register the DLLs???
Edit: Hmmm... looks like I need the cert file to make it work, like with the Tornado A2DP patch. Anyone know how to get it?
please delete this post - for some unknown reason I can not.
"So I was able to extract the files from AKU 3.3 (!!!)"
Hi Joe,
You just paste those Dll's into your Windows folder.
Would you please be so kind as to post the 3 files.
I am trying to get this working on my samsung and
the tornado patch won't work. (it allmost does, I get
everything but the "set as wireless stereo" option.)
I am also wondering if the cert cab worked for you.
Thanks,
I tried copying the files, but they didn't work. I don't think they loaded. When I used MortPlayer, the pop up came up asking if I would allow the AVCRP dll to load. Never got prompted for the other two files, so no go.
I tried signing the files (using and installing the test cert from one of the threads), tried putting it in a cab file, then tried both together, and nothing worked.
Maybe simply extracting the files isn't enough? I dunno... can't duplicate how the Tornado A2DP patch was made. Help, please!
I dunno what's the point posting up the files, since they don't work. But if you guys really want 'em, I'll put them on the FTP site (if I'm allowed to).
Please upload the files as I would still like to see if the make a difference on my device.
Thanks.
Here ya go...
Just be careful not to brick your machine.
Thanks joe,
Tried them on my device with some luck.
I did not get the errors I've gotten with every other bluetooth hack posted in this forum.
That said, I still don't get the option to "set as wireless stereo"
every thing else works just fine.

Well, I updated these three files... machine is alive but, unfortunately A2DP-headset doesn't work now
With new dll's I can't connect my headset to my S200.
I've rollback to TrnadoA2DP hack.
Well, I've finally managed to installed A2DP from AKU 3.3.
It's stable, but the bad news is that it is just as bad as the AKU 2 version. Same odd distortion... no discernable improvement.
It took a lot of steps to get it installed. I'm not gonna go into it... I don't feel like writing an essay at this point.
I'll post up the cab files later (tomorrow?) for those who want to try it. I don't recommend installing them, since it's a hack job that offers no improvements. But I think there are probably a few people as crazy as me who would anyway.
I'm still baffled why dopod won't release a rom for this A2DP....

HTC home screen for WM 5

I keep seeing the fancy looking home screen plug in for WM 6. Is there a similar home screen plug in from HTC for WM 5 that I can use with my 8525? If so how can I get it? Is it free? How do I install it? And I do not know how to do what you guys refer to as reg hacks - so should I just stay away from the topic? I did do some searching and everything comes up under WM 6, or it is not clear if it is WM 5 or 6. Also, I do not want to do anything that will void my warranty - will it? I appreciate any responses. Sorry for being the worlds biggest newbie.
I can't tell you too much about the HTC Home Screen because of I am not using it!
However, 'hacking' the registry will not avoid your warranty! In case you do something wrong: simply hard reset your device and everything should be back to normal and factory default!
If you want to be able to access your PDA's registry you will need a REGISTRY EDITOR installed on your PDA. There are plenty good ones out there! I personally use RESCO EXPLORER 2007 + REGISTRY ADD-IN. You can find a trial version here: http://www.resco.net/pocketpc/explorer/default.asp
To get your HOME SCREEN fancy looking: even here you can find lots of stuff without having to hack anything! One really good application which changes not only your TODAY SCREEN is SPB MOBILE SHELL - more info here: http://spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/mobileshell/?en
Both application I mentioned above are commercial products but trial versions are available as free download! There are hundreds of free application all over the web which will help you to personalize your PDA - just search Google and see what it comes up with!
Hope that helps?
Thanks. A couple quick questions. I can not tell if it is free or not. It has me agree to a bunch of legal stuff, but I do not see any mention of it being free/trial or what a charge would be? Do I do the CAB file?

Its free, dont know if it will work on wm5 havent seen a version working yet on wm5. I suggest just reading the forum for the next two weeks or so. After about a good 20 you will nolonger be a noob. At that time I would suggest upgrading to wm6 and you will have no issues getting this on your phone.
Thanks again for the help on this. If there is not a high degree of knowing that will work on WM 5 does anyone of on that will work?

You can do the cab or the exe - what ever you prefer!
The cab file needs to be copied to the PPC, the setup you run directly on your desktop while your PPC is connected via ActiveSync or MDC.
Both programs I mentioned are running fine under Windows Mobile 5. I used them for more than a year on my T-Mobile MDA WM5 and later on my Hermes.

Coming from Symbian - already frustrated

Hi guys (and ladies).
Just spent half a day with the phone and have bunch of questions:
1. Do I need to install DH2 ROM? What are the benefits? (I did a lot of hacks on symbian, but it looks like tutorials on this forum meant for hackers or professionals. is there a ROM for dummies tutorials some place here?
The other is more simple questions:
2. Imported contacts have "w" for waiting before extension numbers. Phone seams to ignore them. How to dial with extensions?
3. How to lock phone while talking on BT headset
4 I saw a lot of tips involving registry changes. What editor to use for that?
5. I downloaded ActiveSync 4.5 from MS. it looks like not support BT sync. Am I doing something wrong or software needs to be used?
THANKS IN ADVANCE

As for the first question - I dont know what you mean by DH2 ROM.
and I would guess most of the people on this forum do have at least some development experience (not necessarily for WinMo devices, but still), and would probably not bother to explain things that seem to them as basic/elementary, but would try explaining if asked.
2 - try replacing the "w" with a "," (comma), or replacing the "w" with a "p"
3 - dont know, never tried
4 - I use totalcommander for windows mobile, it's free - search for it on google
when starting it - click on the [\] (top right), double click \\plugins, double click registry - and you're there
5 - dont know, never tried

CeRegEditor works on the pc when activesynced.
Much less laborious than pocket pc reg editors.
You can also bookmark reg's, compare registries to isolate and locate reg's, and backup reg's.
To isolate a reg entry, you save the reg, then make a change, then compare before & after reg's to find keys.

All,
Thanks for the replies. It’s a start for me.
1. My wife's HD2 froze on her when she was playing with her. I did soft reset for her, but she will not do it on her own. I'm afraid if it will happen again the phone goes back to store. Not to complaint, but this was the reason I switch to symbian and never had a problem – NEVER!!!!
But never the less, what we can do to minimize this? (Any program that restarts HD2 with one click?) Or anything else like can close all programs with one click? My wife will not go to task manager until it’s too late.
2. One more question. do i need TC for ARM, x86 or anything else?
3. As for Som30ne remark, I’m not trying to be sarcastic but here what the tutorial says and do not understand it. I need laterally ROM upgrade for dummies like what is HSPL or SPL or what tools to use or where to start. Most of you somehow got to that point.
“DarkForces Team HardSPL by bepe and Cotulla
Please read carefully before installing!
1) To install this HSPL there must be SPL 1.42.0000 on your device.
Otherwise the installation will fail!
To check your SPL version, hold the Volume Down button and do a reset.
It is possible to downgrade to this SPL, by just flashing to an Official ROM
with this SPL version.”
Thanks
what i miss THE MOST is the voice dialing in E71.... i just had my phone language set to romanian and this was it... just press and speak the name...
