JAMin + changing ROM - JAMin, XDA Neo, S200 General

Hi Guys i own a imate JAMin that i bought and it has telstra branding on the phone/pda, it isnt locked to this carrier, but i need to get rid of there loaded stuff on the pda
what i need to know is a few things if possible please
1. is there a walk through somewhere on how to change the rom to a standard one
2. where can i download a new rom from
3. can i screw it up bad ?
any other help would be great
Thanks
t0ne

Easy, just download Total commander from http://www.ghisler.com/
Open it up and at the top type \Extended_Rom
This will show the contents of your extended rom, you will see loads of things but the ones you want are the cabs relating to your provider. Or all providers actually, Delete allt the cabs that dont start with Default_ these are what brand your device when you hard reset.
Now just hard reset, it will isntall all the normal stuff but will leave you with a brand free jamin.

Hi dannyoneill,
thanks for the program, only problem i have is how do i add the jamin to it so that i can see it and do what u r saying ?
thanks

You need to download and install Windows CE FS plug-in. You will then see a mobile device entry in the file window. I recommend dragging it to the toolbar so you will always have a button for convenient access (total commander can open files directly form the device).
Also I don't remember it now, but if you search this forum there is a registry tweak that will unhide your extended ROM so you can use it for extra storage space (and manipulate files in it using regular explorer both on device and PC). You can use the free PHM Registry editor to apply the tweak.

Just follow the instructions to install total commander onto your PPC. Make sure you click the link to the mobile version and not the desktop version.

thanks dannyoneill, got it working..
jsut a few other questions if u dont mind
im in the \Extended_Rom folder with the default stuff but the telstra stuff i want to get rid of has Default_Telstra_australia_SA_UN_V2.20.CAB and also Default_Australia_Telstra.CAB as the file names, will these be ok to delete still ?
thanks

Yes, you can delete them.
If you really want everything here is safe to delete. What it usually contains are patches like driver updates, applications like the backgammon, antivirus and Skype.
Below is taken from another post, its a little out of date but still good to see whats what. For me. I removed all the operators apart from my own (as it doesnt brand) plus got rid of backgammon, antivirus (totally useless on a PPC) and skype as the latest version is better (especially if you apply the registry fix to get it working)
Autorun.exe
Default_Backgammon_PPC_IMAM001.CAB >>> Backgammon
Default_CAAVPPC_IMEI_Wiz_range.CAB >>> THE DREADED ANTI VIRUS STUFF

Default_SkypeForPocketPCnonxScale.CAB >>> SKYPE FOR NONE XSCALE !!!
Default_SmartDialing_enable_0915_signed.CAB >>> The pretty Dialer and smart-dialer stuff
Install_Tsk.exe >>> This Installs all the “Default_” Files

These are the “Settings” which is not needed at least in the GULF STATES

Poll for sticking this 3d!
THANKS !!!
..._
P.S.: may I install basic stuff to the ExtROM while it's hidden ?
Or, if I need to unhide it, install, then re-hide, will such software still playable ?
I mean for example:
- Total commander itself
- Resco explorer
- Storage tools
- Sprite Backup
- and so on...
Is it a strange idea ?
Thanks again for this illuminating thread.

You can unlock and install things no problem, not done it myself, done know if they will still be usable after its re-hidden i would think not.
The extended rom is reserved so empty or not its not going to give you more ram or rom storage at all. The best thing to do is unlock it and use it for storage. The annoying thing is if you hard reset you then have to re-unlock it.

BTW, on the i-mate website's JAMin support pages, you will find specific operator settings for Optus in a downloadable CAB file, which will setup the wireless settings for your device.

ROMkitchen are out of date..... Who wants to change????

Hello XDA users....
I think you know it all, that the ROMkitchen is a fine application to get our device nearly perfect.
But the ROMkitchen is out of date. This means many applications aren´t not in the actual version. Therefore Auburnham and I thought to update the applications.
The problem is, that the amount of added applications to the kitchen is to big to make this happen by us two. Because of this problem I´m searching for some people, which wants to help.
Another problem is, that you need for this a device that haven´t got installed that piece of software. This means that when you want to help me with Phonext for example, you must have a device without any version of Phonext installed.
So, if you are going to help me make a snapshot of your device with the ssnap - Application.
Install the software.
Make again an Snapshot of your device with the ssnap - Application.
Send these two files to [email protected] with inforamtion about the program you have installed and the exact Version you have installed.
When I´ve got analyzed the two files i will reply to you with a wishlist of files that have been created on your device. After sending me the files, i can update the kitchen....
IF there are any quesions or anything else, feel free to contact me....
Regards
Stefan
Good Idea :
I'd be happy to contribute.
Tell me which application you want me to install and I'll do it provided that I find the procedure (that I've seen being posted elsewere in this forum).
NB : I'm using XDA I with a Frenchy 3.16 and be stuck with it  ; so there is no chance for me to re-build a new a geniun 3.16 Rom again.
My XDA is all up and running.
I've overcome my Language FRA error message after purchasing a SD card reader and loading the ROM through the bootloader. 8)
Now, I'm about to install ttn 3 on my XDA. Do you want list it in your kitchen ?
What do you need exactly ?
I would be happpy to help. I am a regular user of your site and appreciate the effort that has been put into it.
I understand the effort needed to keep things working and up to date.
Pierre
I'm in!!
Just let me know what you need and when and I will maker every endevour to help.
Thanks for all you do

I've sent these snapshots off to Stefan, along with the files that I thought might be necessary for these programs. This is going to be great for all of us, but a lot of work for Stefan. We all owe him a great deal, so take him out for a nice meal the next time you see him.

I don't want to make this any more complicated than it is, but for some programs, it just doesn't make any sense to install to the XDA memory. Most of the media players and "Misc" programs just take up too much unnecessary device memory when they would work just as well on the SD Card (if that's available).
The problem is that those huge programs require just a few small files to be placed on the device itself. So after installing a few of these types of programs, you've used up a lot of device memory from these small files, even though you installed the program to your SD Card.
Is there a way to alter the kitchen a bit to allow cooking of the necessary device files only, and allow the user to later install the program to the SD Card (being careful not to overwrite the files in ROM with files in RAM)?
For instance, with the TomTom program, if you start with a clean ROM and SD card, take a snapshot, then install the program to your SD card, then take another snapshot, you could determine what files need to be on the device, and what files don't need to be on the device, and allow users to either cook the entire program or just the necessary files in the ROM. (Note: This is a good example of a run-on sentence). Would this be a difficult feature to add to the kitchen?

Maybe the esiest Option is adding a new Select Point for the kitchen like "misc", "System Tools", "Phone" ....
This means having the programs double in the kitchen, but how cares.
I don't know exactly, but when you install a program to the SD-Card, could you select the part where to place it?
If yes, this could be a big problem. Many of the programs store the path in the registry.
If no, i could also provide a ZIP-file, where the rest of the programfiles are in, hust to unzip to the Storagecard.....

I believe this really depends on (1) how well the program was written, and (2) if you can install the program with CabInst (i.e. has a cab installation).
For example, I try to keep my SD Card organized and tidy so if I use CabInst I install the program to an appropriate folder on the SD Card. If I have to install the program from the desktop, I install the program to the SD Card root, then try to move the program to an appropriate folder and update the shortcut. Most of the time this works without even changing any registry entries, but sometimes it doesn't. Two examples from the above list of applications are AOL Instant Messenger 2.0 and Pocketmind PocketMusic 3.0. To function correctly, they both need to be in their original installation folders on the SD Card.
But perhaps the best solution would be to have an associated .zip file to go on the SD Card, as you suggested.
Shawn
Now the kitchen should be up 2 date again.
Only missing is PocketConsole and the Part "Software that needs to register"
So happy cooking and again Thx a lot to all users that helped me.....
Stefan
A Windows-way for cooking a ROM would be great for two reasons: 1) Don't hassle your server with lots of traffic and 2) Practical. Advanced users could cook a ROM without having a PC with Unix.
For example I tried cooking the Spanish version of the ROM and not all the programs I chose were installed and the worst thing is that the boot logo was just garbage, it was showing program code on the screen as a logo

Marton

Ok. Fixed the problem with the bootscreen.....
Tried also adding as much application, and all have been installed.
Can you tell me, what files / programs are missing?
No one else told me that there have been a problem wirth this ROM. I think it's because of the situation that most of the useres are using WM2003 ROMS....
You can also use the kitchen under "Windows" just have to set up a Cyguin environment on your system....
Also i didn't know how many Kitchen's are implemented by other users, but mine one is the only "official". You can't believe that everyone would be able to set it up.......
Stefan
Thanks Stefan!!!!!!
Now it seems to work but if EzWAP is selected, it throws a Log error when trying to cook...
Cheers,
Marton
P.S.: Do you know if a Spanish WM2003 exists?
Edit: This is the error:
Cannot fit files in given sections
Error splitting files
Just cooked a ROM... I selected the "Windows Mobile XDA" Boot Screen and now it is not garbage anymore but now it shows mirrored and upside down...
Any ideas?

Putting TomTom 3 in extended rom

I fiddled around with my extended rom this week.
Now I managed to get all my favourite apps in the ext-rom so in case of a hard-reset (especially when on holiday, do no PC around) I will get a decent config back.
Until now I did not manage to get a CAB file for TomTom.
TomTom comes in APK files, which seem to be some other type of archive. I guess there are 2 options:
1. Create a CAB from the TomTom APK files and put them in Extended rom
2. Find out the way to install from an APK file ON THE DEVICE
Anyone with hints/tips????
:?:
Hello,
the cab of TT are created during the installation of TT ( see in program files / Microsoft ActiveSync) . You can download the upgrade of TT, during he instllation, the cab are uncompressed. You can find after the Cab and save in the extended Rom.
@+
Sperli
Thanks, but this is what I guessed allready.
There is nothing TomTom like in the Progra Files/Microsoft Activesync directory.
I started setup again (it processed the APK files), but did not connect the MDAII. So whith next sync it will ask to install. That makes me conclude the CAB is somewhere on my PC.
When I look in the Registry, I find following under H-key-localmachine/software/microsoft/windows CE services/appmgr/apps/Tom Tom Navigator:
installdir -> c:\winnt\profiles\<username>\temp\navigator
listcabfiles -> navigator_eng.ppc3_arm.cab navigator_eng.ppc3_sh3.cab navigator_eng.ppc3_mips.cab
I think I only need the navigator_eng.ppc3_arm.cab
Gues the files should be in c:\winnt\profiles\<username>\temp\navigator then.
But it isnt . . . .
Should it be there only during the copy to the MDAII???
Anyone more clues?
FOUND IT!!!!
Just when the installer mentions the files will be installed at next sync, the CAB's are in the directory I mentioned.
TT3 after Hard Reset
Here you are the 3 necessary cab for TT3,
Gps, Nav and voice, english in this case.
Two of those are taken from the upgrade file 303.
Voice are english and it's from original cd.
Enjoy
Rups
ehm, thist this might be called illegal software now!!!!
i don't want that,
only a way to have it after hard reset...
Sorry, moderator can you come...
Rups
how can it be called illgal software now when......
it doesnt have the maps with it nor the activation code!
some people eh?
theis method of backing up sounds like a very good idea,
Tom Tom Navigator is essential to my job for finding my way around the country and i have had 2 occasions where it has crashed or hard reset whilst i was using it, I am not too worried about any of my other info but i need to be able to run TTN3 all the time,
My current method of ensuring i have always got a working copy is to carry another PPC (ipaq 2210) with another gps and another 256 meg sd card with a full install of TTN3 just in case i get into trouble, But this sounds like a much better and far more cost effective method !!
I will give this a try, I assume i just install my maps onto my SD card like i normally do and if i reinstall i just reactivate the new install to get it working again
Thanks guy...
In this case i wrote that the cab was extracted from the upgrade 303... normally find it at main tomtom site and free of charge...
Second the many voice files you can find free of charge on the internet...
Third my idea was having tt3 in any occasion... also after a hard reset...
Fourth No code or maps...
And than here we go...
Rups
Hi
I'm new to this loading stuff to the extened ROM business, but I like the sound of it.
In order to do this do I copy the CAB file anywhere in the pocket PC, i.e. my documents and then run it, or does it need to be copied to the extended ROM.
If it is copied to the extended ROM, do I then need to actually run the CAB file from the extended Rom after a hard reset in order to re-install it, or is it actually installed.
Finally what is unlocking the extended ROM tool required for?
Cheers
JustinP
please don't post software here.
By all means put the instructions, but the RTU for tomtom make it quite clear that it should not be dissasembled, distributed or made available without permission.

Unlocking extended ROM

Ok Total commander gives you access to the extended rom using the method just posted above.
But if you want to actually have the extended rom showing all time, then you need this...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=33680&highlight=extended+rom
The extended rom unlocker will give the actual extended rom as space deginated extended_rom2 and its about 9.85mb size or something with between about 350kb and 2.5mb of .cab files in it depending on whether its a Qtek (Which has the least amount of files), I-mate, o2 or T-Mobile, these last two probably (along with Orange) will have the most 'junk in them.
Once you have ran the exteneded rom unlocker and soft reset your device it will be accesible through file explorer you won't need TC.
You can then go in and delete (be careful to make sure what everything does first) its your own responsibility, and remove what you don't need.
For example on the I-mate Extended Rom you cane remove Backgammon, Skype and the anti virus prog. There wasn't much on the Qtek Rom I just put on mine just clearvue and soemthing else inconsequential, there was no skype or antivirus, but I believe some Qtek roms might have this.
T-Mobile is abother story, there is a shedload of crap in the extended rom, ranging from a today screen toolbar to small progs, there is list knocking about of what each file does. When I changed from T-Mob to I-mate and then Qtek I just transferred the T-Mobile GPRS settings and the GPRS disconnect button .cab and put them in the exteneded Rom myself and let it run.
Also on I-mate Rom there are carrier settings that you can delete which won't apply to you, basically lots fo countries phone settings, like o2 UK, T-Mobile Spain etc etc, depending on where you are in the world.
You can't delete the I-mate .tsk todayscreens as far as I know, they are not in the ExtRom. The Qtek ExtROm doesn't have the extra .tsk's just default and the Guava Bubbles one.
If anyone wants the T-Mobile GPRS .cab and GPRS disconnect button .cab I can send it through msn or email.
that doesn't work either. I treid with the unlocker and deleted the files with TC. If i check the content no files are there, but when i try to copy other files to the ext. Rom it says that the volume is write protected. I softreseted several times also.
Any hint on that ? How have all the others deleted the files in extended rom ?

Might not work for you but it worked for me and a load of others. Once the extended rom is visible you can delete files easily, you don't need TC like I said. Its easier to put additional cabs into my documents sync them across and just run them.
Yeah, that's a pitty.... I have the Vodafone VPA Compact II, which is the Wizard 100 afaik.
Someone around here has the same model and succeeded in removing the cabs from the extended rom ?

Thanks for the response but I haven't had any success after several tries. I tried installing the Wizard unlock cab file and afterwards with Total Commander, I can reset the Read Only bit on all the files and copy the files to my SD card. However, I am unable to delete any files. They appear to be deleted but come back after a soft reset. I would like to especially get rid of all the operator settings files. The rest of the stuff like Skype, Anti Virus and Backgammon I can get rid of using Settings>Remove Programs.
Frank
Isn't "ROM" short for "read only memory"?
hi, I am using Buzz's unlocker for Wizard... it made the ExtROM visible but still it is read only
I need to find how can I delete and add files to it.
Any challenging minds out there?
Total commander does not work with the jamin in my case anyway.
Tried several time with no results.

Buzz,
Thanks for the great offer.
I can give you the clean reg but how can i get you the first part, bootloader thingie?

I have used the Wizard Extended ROM unlock program to unlock the ROM on my Prophet. I now have a copy of the Extended ROM on my SD Card. I'm not concerned about erasing the Extended ROM files, I just don't wan them installed, so I did a Hard Reset and just when it says that it will start installing the additional prorams in 3 seconds, I did a soft reset.
OK, now I have a Prophet without extended ROM. I can now install the stuff that I want.
Most of the cab files I've figured out, Does anyone know what the following extended ROM cabs do? This is from the latest Imate Jamin ROM.
Default_CAAVPPC_IMEI_2.6.77_range.CAB
Default_Imate_PPC_SA_V5.5.03.cab
Default_MP_Shortcut_MMS1_JAVA_VOICE_CV_051213.CAB
Default_PP_TSK.CAB
Default_PP_UAString.CAB
Default_PT_Signed_IconDll.sa.CAB
Default_PT_Signed_Patch_SD.sa.CAB
Thanks heaps,
Matterhorn
Default_CAAVPPC_IMEI_2.6.77_range.CAB is the anti-virus app which used to play havoc in slowing down the KJAM. Maybe this version is better but I uninstalled it using Remove Programs. About the rest I am not sure. At least you don't have Skype, backgammon and the Operator Settings files so I expect you will gain a fair amount.
Frank
you can use wince cab manager to see the content of the cab file.
Still nothing? Guess I will go the way of Matterhorn when I need to do a hard reset. Several others have not installed the Extended ROM at all and have reported significant speedup in the JAMin.
Frank
That would be me. I haven't installed one thing off the extended rom and my speed is really pretty good. You can see a video review at the link below to compare the m600 and the jamin (with no extended rom). Keep in mind I don't use mms, skype, antivirus anyway....so no big deal to leave off the ext rom. I also use adobe and don't need the clearview .pdf. Hope the video helps
http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=849592
Thanks, Mike. I don't use the stuff either except MMS once in a while but can just as easily use email for that. I presume Voice Dial is in the Extended Rom but rather have MS VC anyway and things like Connection Manager, Messaging, etc., that I want are not in the Extended ROM so I should be fine.
Now to find time to do a hard reset and re-install my apps.
Frank
Everyone has diffrent issues, I was able to delete the files from there (verified by refreshing the dir, and I recieved no read only error) but I was unable to write files to it, which I thought was very strange, I am using APA_ext_rom_unlock.exe and it does NOT give me the success msg it acts like it hasnt even ran. I updated my ROM to teh test one that was floating auround 2.8.7 whatever, and I realized too late that aWizard has no way to reflash teh extended ROM so I am without all my Cingular apps and I have all the 2.8.7 Extended rom stuff with the 1.8 Cingular OS ROM which I reverted back to. Any suggestions how I can replace my extended ROM ?
any luck so far?
Hi guys,
Are we getting any hope/luck to unlock Ext ROM for JAMin/Prophet?
I don't know how you guys are doing it. I have tried several times to delete items in my extended rom using total commander, at least 10 times and the result is the same. After the hard reset all that was deleted was re-installed after the reset.
I have contacted TC a while ago, and have not heard anything, maybe they are working on it.
Just curious....as I'm new to this ext rom stuff....but why don't you just "not install" the ext rom. Then use gsfinder to install whichever .cabs you want? If any? Just curious as I may be missing something.

No, I think the end result would be pretty much the same. For me I would like an Extended ROM for the JAMin that includes exacty what I want installed - no Backgammon, AntiVirus, Smart Dialing, Skype and a single Operator Settings file for TMO USA. Then when I hard reset I don't have to mess with anything else, just let it go. I had my KJAM setup that way and I would like the JAMin to be the same. I would also be as close to an OEM install as I can get (without the junk) so I don't have to worry about proper default settings not being there because of some file I didn't install or installed in the wrong order. Having said all this and thinking about it more I am sure you would get to the same point doing your procedure and then installing the required .cab files in the proper order.
Now I have a question:
Wonder what would happen if I did a hard reset, then did the soft reset to stop the Ext ROM install, installed the required .cab files in order, soft reset and then restored from a Sprite BU file. Wonder would I be restoring any files that could cause problems due to an imcomplete ROM install? I guess I will have to try that first since I do hate to re-install a bunch of apps and especially have to re-enter all the reg codes.

How to group cabs in one cab?

Is possible to group several cabs in one cab?
I want it to save in the Extended Rom of my TyTn, so that when I do a HardReset, automatic it starts to install all the modifications of registry and some programs that I have in several cabs from the pocket, without need of pc.
I search on the forum, but I don´t find any solution.
Thanks
Well first off, if you use the autorun.exe that already exists in the extended ROM and modify its configuration file (the name may be different for different devices, but it is usually a plain text file) you can get it to install several cabs in sequence.
Combining cabs is not always possible unless you are the one who created them in the first place.
Get a program called CE Cab Manager. It will show you everything that a given cab includes and let you edit it. As long as it's just files and registry settings there is no problem stuffing them all in one cab.
But if a two cabs contain a setup.dll there is no way of combining them without knowing exactly what that DLL does (it could be anything) and thats almost impossible (unless you can read ARM assembler well).

what levenum said is correct... so the best thing for you to do is to edit the config.txt file in your extended rom to have them install... HOWEVER if the cabs you are using arent digitally signed then they wont install using that method, you would need to disable the security first... Since no one has a signed disable security cab that works with the tytn the only option would be to do this on a hard reset; soft reset before the customization, when it boots run the tweak program to disable security, then go to the windows directory and manually launch the preautoconfig.exe
software alternatives
tristan1412, you can also use a software dedicated to this task.
check spb airsetup (www.spbsoftwarehouse.com, i'm not sure if it allows more then one cab), or even better airwizard (http://www.teksoftco.com/index.php?section=airwizard)
the advantage of these programs is in my opinion the compression. then you also get several options like readme/eula (with airwizard you have spash image support and even sd card output support - that creates autorun content for the sdcard)
hope this helps
