You're out of luck.
Qualcomm, the maker of 3G chips as used in UMTS and EVDO/1xRTT doesn't support circuit-switch data connections (where you dial a number). This means NO gadget that uses their chip's can use fax or data software.

Thank you!
Do you know in which PDA can I use both phone and fax?

In phone settings "Band" you have to choose "GSM" to make CSD connections work. Perhaps fax connections will also be allowed then.

I have already got settled "GSM" and still fax does not work

Can you pl elaborate? Does Jasjar use Qualcomm chips? Will faxing be possible on Jasjar if Data and Fax facility is enabled by my cell provider? Can I not GSM for faxes? Sorry for naive Q but what is UMTS? Presently I am regularly sending faxes from my Nokia 9500. Looking for a change.

Try www.efax.com send and recive fax's via email or there web site. dont do much faxing but been using this for years.

Hi Manu,
As of now it is not possible to send the fax from Universal...but one can send the faxes from other PPC phones such as 2s/2i/XDA 2/o2 mini.
This is due to the differrences in the Port Configurations.
JASJAR Does use the Qualcomm Chip..

Fax Software

Can anyone recommend Fax software that I can load onto my XDA II to enable it to sebd and receive faxes? I have a fax number that I had with Orange but O2 do not have the same facilities for fax so I have had to put the number on permanent divert to my home fax. Not good as I cannot read them when I am out on the road working. O2 refused to tell me any fax software as they cannot endorse any companies other than O2, and as O2 do not do the software I am stuffed! Any ideas?
KSE Truefax 2
Try KSE Trufax 2.06 for XDA II, at:
http://www.ksesoftware.com
(although it's not always working with me)
When I download will it wipe off anything I have on my XDA? I am very nervous about downloading stuff as I do not want to loose any info I have on my XDA. Thanks
You can download it and install it simply. It won't wipe anything. When sending a fax, the telephone function is automatically suspended, and, when finished, it goes on again. Sometimes, while sending a fax, the system hangs so you need to make a simple soft reset.
got the trial version can but says no carrier any advice ?
hi jus got the trial version of the sofware when i try to send a fax the program reports - dialing using internal modem - slight pause - then says no carrier signal ....... can you shed some light on this for me please .....
thanks heath.
problem sending faxes !!! solution
hi loaded the software as noted above but on trying out the sofware i kept getting the message no carrier i found some info on the kse website which told me to ring my provider and ask if the sim card was enabled for fax !!!
ang guess what yep i am now waiting for the settings to filter through the system.....
i will report back to this thread with an update in errrrrrr 12 - 24 hours...
reporting back !!!!
very impresive have had the trial version running and have used it succesfully many time to send as yet not received any still working on that but information i have suggests i again need to contact my provider to be issued with a fax number ???....... will keep you all posted. :?
Why we need a fax number from provider?
Why we cannot use a standard gsm number?
Anybody knows another software capable to receive faxes without a special fax number?
I beleive you can't fax directly over GSM because it's a completely different set of communication protocols to fax. It's analogue for a start. GSM modems don't know about fax carrier signals etc. What happens when you get a fax number from yoyur provuder is this number goes to a box at your phone provider, which accepts fax protocols and converts things to go via a GSM data channel to your phone.
I wonder if a completely software fax solution would be possible, ie it opens the GSM audio stream and provides a software based implementation of fax comms. Probably impossible as even though anlogue fax and GSM audio are similar bandwidth (9.6Kbps) the GSM audio codec is geared to voice so wouldn't represent the fax singnal adequately.

Fax tones are specifically designed to work over voice systems....
(300 to 3.4K)
as these are the set limitations of earlier Telephone Transmission systems....(4 meg fdm & pcm)
Don't know a lot about GSM though..... :?

FAXING problem

OK, I have the new KSE True fax its on my XDAII,
(rom 1.72.00wwe, date 03/15/04, radio 1.17.00, protocol 1337.28, ext rom 1.72.181)
I have spoken to the software company, KSE TrueFax, they say its an o2 fault, (latest version supplied for O2 XDA and alike) and O2 say speak to the software company.
The fax when used switches off the mobile then initiates the modem then dials, then says no carrier detected? and switches off.
Yes I have fax enabled, Yes I have a fax number, I also have a Data number which all worked at the touch of a button on my 9210i and still does.
Can anyone help me, my hair is slowly disappearing in lumps!
Cheers
Trevor

my fax workes fine, Im currently in Amsterdam on there network and all is good
Faxing problem
Well thanks Mario, its nice to know your fax is working fine!
Trev
Are there any com port settings that need to be changed
Hey
I have exactly the same problem as you and I started asking about it in another thread on here. However it died when the agreed solution was to ensure that fax was enabled on my service by calling up O2. I havent done this yet because im in the process of switching to Orange.
On the other hand you have definitely done this step already since you have a fax/data number and I assume this number is entered in TrueFax settings. Despite this, you still get the same error message as I do which is puzzling and worrying since some people kindly mention they have no problems!
The TrueFax website isnt much help either saying that "no carrier detected" is a very general message that could mean a lot of things, some listed can easily be elminated. One interesting point is how you enter the number to send the fax? Do you just enter 012345678901 or +4412345678901 or +++4412345678901. The help pages seem to indicate that the ++ or +++ and country code is something to check. I had a mess about with different combinations and it didnt work for me, however I probably dont have fax enabled on my service, which ill try to fix when im on Orange, hehe.
Please could anyone find the cause/solution to this problem or offer any fuurther suggestions?

Faxing problem
Well, after much emailing to KSE, some of the problem is solved.
1, the software switches of the mobile because...........that's the way its designed as its not integrated into the hardware like theNokia 9210i.
This problem will remain untill Mr Gates (Microsoft) allows software houses to fully integrate his and their software into PDA's.
well that's what they tell me anyway.
2, no carrier detected...............several reasons given for this.
a, no fax number
b, no fax number assigned to sim
c, no fax number activated by service provider
d, no data number
e, no data number assigned to sim
f, no data number activated by service provider
Notice that also the latest version of Truefax must have the latest ROM and Extended Rom KSE say.
I have all of this and still nowt!
Returning to Nokia is getting closer....

Faxing Problem
OK, OK
It now appears the latest software from KSE does not work on XDAII with the latest ROM versions it only works on the XDAIIs.
Does anyone out there have a working program on an XDAII with latest ROM version and of course Ext ROM?
Are you or have you had problems running latest KSE Fax software?
What software are you running does it work ?
Does anyone have an older working copy of KSE Truefax for XDAII ?
Can anyone send me a copy which works ?
[email protected]
Cheers

KSE True Fax 2.06 :?: :?:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=11739
I had the version listed above working on my XDAII before latest ROM upgrade.
After latest upgrade with latest version, it worked straight away after hard reset. Haven't changed any settings at all.
Got it on my MDAIII as well and works fine on that too.
Well the sagacontinues.
NO I don't have a working fax and have tried 2.06 too, the only thing that happened was the first fax it tried to send it asked for the first time what modem I would be using, then did the usual...................NO CARRIER DETECTED!
Yep I have been onto o2 and the usual YES its all on!
I have discovered though O2 have a massive problem at the mo, going back some 6 weeks, their system has packed up and things are not going well with the new installed system.........people are being billed for calls not made! and some are not being billed at all, so those of you on o2 keep an eye on bills etc;
Ah well, suppose its back to my faxing problem....thinking of changing to Vodaphone network.
Fixed It!
Hey
Well I must reccommend to ukmctc to do it and make the switch. I have just changed from O2 to Orange and not only does everything such as GPRS, WAP, MMS all work as before (I had to input new settings), faxing now works without a problem.
On O2 I simply could not get faxing to work and always got 'no carrier detected'. It made me wonder if the people saying it work ed for them were real or not....
One thing I have ensured I do, and I dont know if it makes a difference is to prefix all numbers in TrueFax with +44 and omit the first 0, including the space where you input your own fax number. This means correcting the provided number when you're using the built-in contacts list to select a number too.
Good luck to everyone thats still having problems, maybe switching network is the solution! If anyone wants to grill me about the settings I use, please ask away. I am using KSE TrueFax 2.08 as supplied in O2's appsuite.
Ash
Faxing Problem resolved!
8)
Yes resolved it was easy to do!, you won't believe how easy......
Put my sim back into my Nokia 9210i and it works perfectly, I can now send receive faxes while receiving or making a voice call or surfing the net.
I'm so happy I could..sit!
Looks like the new toy isn't as good as the old one.

Faxes on Qtek S100

Hi, I wonder if it is possible to get faxes on Qtek S100? I have a multi numbering operator's SIM card (data, fax, voice).
How can I do that?
Thanks
Try KSE Truefax ( I think it can be found on the forum) for sending and receiving faxes.
guys, I found this on the developer's website:
NOTE
Please notice that KSE Truefax is NOT running on Pocket PC Phone Edition devices with integrated modem, like XDA I + II, MDA I + II, Qtek, i-mate, etc.
anyone could manage it to work on Macician?

it also includes the Midlet manager to lounch Java aplications, Photo Contacts and Intellidialer
Did any of you get TrueFax to work?
Have you successfully sent faxes?
Thx.
yes, I did sent and received faxes
Thanks for the feedback.
By the way, can you tell me what maker and version of firmware you are using?
I am trying to use TrueFax with my Imate Jam and am having problems.
TMobile won't help me unless I pay $10 extra per month for a second line to receive faxes on. My complaint to them is that I only want to send and not receive and so I question if my account is enabled for fax data. Of course their techs don't know and only give me the canned response of that I need to buy a second line.
So my next question to you would be inquire whether you had to subscribe to any special additional services in order to send faxes with your service provider?
If there is a situation where it is the IMate Jam ROM that doesn't properly support TrueFax, then I would like to determine that first before signing up to and getting stuck with a contract for an extra $10/month.
Thanks again.
yes, you certainly have to subscribe for the second line (fax/data line) even only to receive the faxes. Truefax will "listen" only your fax line not the current. once you activate send/receive mode on the truefax, it disables your voice line (can not make/receive calls) and listens to your fax line.
it is not possible to use the truefax over your voice line. furthermore, your operator will not allow you the fax transmission over the voice line even if you will somehow manage to use it for faxes.

Dear .
U hv to use KSE True Fax 2.09(d/l from FTP) and your SIM shd have the Data/Fax service activated from yr service provider...
Hi,
can you tell me how you did it. The TrueFax is ver. 2.09 is not recognizing the modem.
If you succeeded you let it running, plz. describe the procedure in detail.
thanx.
KSE's website explicitly stated that it doesn't support HTC Universal
HTC-Universal device without fax software - The already available "Universal" devices manufactured by HTC are not equipped with a fax software. That means, when you purchase one of these Pocket PC Phones, such as MDA Pro, XDA expert, VPA 4, etc. no version of our software KSE Truefax is included. Furthermore no version of our software is available for these devices. Previous versions of Truefax are not compatible with this device type. If you need a fax software please contact your respective net provider.

I haven't tried this, but maybe you can give it a go:
MFaxCE -- Don't know if it's WM5 compatible.
http://www.samtechnc.com/eng/introduction/mfax_intro.htm
Anyway I can use Winfax Pro 10 installed on my Windows XP computer to use the Jasjar as a fax modem so that I can fax from my pc connected to the Jasjar via bluetooth. I know I can do this with my Nokia 6600. I tried the same with the Jasjar but it appears that the Winfax Pro does not recognize the Jasjar as a fax modem. Maybe I am doing something wrong or maybe simply that the Jasjar modem is not fax compatible. Any view would be appreciated.
Kind Regards
I remember someone in the BA section posting a working KSE cab file for the BA with WM5.
Just don't have time to find it right now.
I have a big dilema...will it ever be possible to use fax on my qtek 9000? I have all the required fax services on my SIM and software on my phone (TrueFax 2.09), but it still not working to send or receive fax from my device...
And about the fax modem...is this an aditional software, or what because my phone is not detecting any fax modem?
We are the developer of MFaxCE
We are the developer of MFaxCE. Actually, we have already ported our MFaxCE to WM5.0 successfully, but we found that HTC have changed a lot or haven't open the port for fax on WM5.0 device, we still fail to send/receive fax on WM5.0 right now.
However we are working with some manufacturer who is willing to modify their driver to make our MFaxCE capable of fax on their WM5.0 device. And we are also looking forward that HTC can do some modification or disclose some information to us, so that we can make MFaxCE compatiable with all the HTC WM5 device.
We will keep you posted about any news in the future!
@samtech
Sounds great, i really miss Faxing on the Universal.
However, I seriuosly doubt that HTC vill release any info on the internal's of their device. They will more likely give you a datasheet on an upcoming device, and perhaps give you some limited access.
It's very clear that the whole WmMobile business market is centeret on one thing, pushing new devices out the door.
Rom Updates that actually makes our devices work the way they are marketed, are never released......just forget it!
And why should they, we are stupid enoughf to buy the new devices, hoping that it will solve our problems.
Luckily we have some brilliant guys working on the linux Port for the BA, Universal and other devices ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=35972 )
Doo feel free to join or provide any info you might posses to the community, the more the merrier
On the negative side, it dossent excatly put food on the table, but hopefully it will help us by providing the tools we need to help us do other things that will, without having to constantly monitoring this board to get our devices working within resanoble boundries.

AFAIK Universal does not support V2.0, which will
make it a PITA to support. I don't know if it a hardware
limitation or a phone radio ROM (mis)feature.
Edit:
sorry, it was mgetty+sendfax that does not support v1,
but hylafax does.

Funny how a search on google turned up more than a search on our own damn forum...Search function sucks!
The SE Xperia X1 has a inbuild FAX Modem.
Sending a Fax with the X1 is from the Hardwareside possible.
I have searched the last week nearly two days
for a software that i can install on the X1
for fax handling.
The only programm that was prommissing was
"True Fax". True Fax make the Phone to a Fax macine.
It allow sending and receiving of Fax with
the Mobilephone.
This programm however is outdated and
works only for older HTC Phones.
I have solved my problem by replacing the need of a fax with the mail functionality of the phone.
You should have however have the possibility to connect
the X1 Modem with Vista over BT. Afterthis select as outgoing connection in Vista the new Modem. With a good Faxprogramm your Fax should be send by the SE X1.

I read your post and like the idea, so I tried to set up a remote connection to the phone, in Vista, but the wizard will not display the phone modem (assuming there is one). The remote connection utilty in Vista looks like it always did in Windows (I see it sometimes because it pops up when I launch my wifi modem's connection). If the modem is found, any fax program should find it.
I should think there is a way because it's not too long ago since the gsm operators were actively marketing their business packages with the big thing then - fax from the mobile. I know I can still get an extra number to the mobile phone, that will only handle fax calls.
If it cannot be done, you an always let Vista use X1s internet connection, then send the document with something like PamFax for Skype (works great and the pennies for sending can be deducted from the Skype account so there's no extra business of filling up credits).
-------------
Reclaim the fax! I don't call customer service or the government or the bank or whatever any longer - it's just holding lines and a lot of options that take you to an automated voice that says something stupid. If you send an email, you don't know if they'll answer. If they get a fax, for sure it WILL land on someones desk and they will treat it as a formal letter.
--------------
Actually in bigger companies, their fax machines are inside their COMPUTERS. So there is nothing landing on anyones desk
And probably smaller companies can't afford a 'real' fax machine and will just use their computers.... same result
I'm in Europe. We're different.
You can try install BT dialup networking profile and then connect phone from vista as COM port modem.
