Automatic Memory clearance in K-Jam - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

I have used pcoket PC devices from the Philip Velo1 and even before that. I have never faced memory loss like with the K-Jam. The device slows down with time but when I check the running programs list I see a full page list. As soon as I close them all the device performs well again.
Is there anyway of automatically clearing memory and closing running programs with the K-Jam (WM5) after say 2 or more programs running?

Hi.
What you need is to read http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=29863
and then install PocketPlus 3.0.1 . Problem solved
if you want to go fastter then read
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=30011
and do what it say's .
but like everything in life do yer research before you take a risk .
I did, and the results were great . 200% improvement in performance and useability.

Thanks for the response. By the way I have already removed the Antivirus software.
But how does the PocketPlus help?
By the way I have tried the latest PocketPlus and it still crushed my k-Jam on reset.

Check to make sure you have version 3.0.3 of PocketPlus as my K-JAM crashed every time with 3.0.1. It wasnt until i downloaded 3.0.3 that i was able to boot normally. You could also disable the safe mode feature in Pocket Plus options before you reset which fixes the boot problem with earlier 3.x releases.
EDIT: SPB Software now has a note on the PocketPlus version history informing that the Wizard specific issues with safe mode have been fixed as of v3.0.4.
http://spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/pocketplus/history.html?en
Pocket Plus has a feature where you can change the behaviour of the close button [X] so it can close apps instead of minimise or even popup a menu with more options. Have a search of the forum here, and over at www.modaco.com as there is heaps of info about Pocket Plus and other options for closing / minimising apps (some of them are even free).

Chris

SPB Pocket Plus !!
can you provide me a link where to freely download Pocket Plus 3.0.3 or 3.0.4 ??? i'd appreciate it ...
thanx in advance.

If you're buying PocketPlus just for the task/memory manager, have a look at the many free alternatives, e.g. WisBar Advance, VBar, MagicButton, Pocket Nav, GSPocketMagic etc etc. Several (e.g. MagicButton, GSPocketMagic) allow you to set exception lists so you get to choose what gets automatically closed instead of minimized.
That's the best way with the Wizard, as some apps need to be kept in memory due to the slow loading times from ROM, e.g. Calendar, Contacts and Messaging. For URLs, Google is your friend.

I actually prefer managing what's running in the memory manually. gives me a feeling of control. I usually leave some of the frequent apps running. stuff like calendar, phone, activesync, IE.

XDA II: Closed Applications Still Running In Memory

Open an application, for example, Internet Explorer and then close it.
Next, check out the applications running in memory:
Settings-> System-> Memory-> Running Programs
Internet Explorer is apparently still running in memory! Is this a known bug and if so, is there a work around as I would expect this to affect the performance.
Also note this happened before and after the ROM 1.60 Upgrade.
it's been like that from the first version of windows CE
i suppose that because of slow cpu and mem
and such ms believed that keeping the applications running
would inc the response time of the pda so they would not
seem slugish compared to palm and other pda os's
This is a Windows Mobile 2003 'feature'
There are programs available to close the program down completely.
I have my personal favourite, by far, and is completely free. I can't remember the name of it and I'm currently updating my ROM, but as soon as that's done, I'll look in ActiveSync and let you know.

Certainly one of the thing's that I've found since the recent XDAII ROM update is that closing apps down via the Tast Manager has caused the OS to crash out with the message 'A unhandled error has occurred in the shell.' type message (has only happened a couple of times). The only way forward from this is a soft reset.

Hi,
How are you trying to exit the programs that this happens to ? It could be that instead of clicking what you think is the close button, you are actually clicking the Today Screen icon ?
As regards Task Managers, the best I have come across and use all the time is PocketNav. Here is a link for it.
http://www.scottandmichelle.net/scott/cestuff.html
This app allows you to see currently running programs and flip between them with ease. You can also close or close all programs from this menu too.
Hope this helps.

Rob.
WisBar Advance
http://www.lakeridgesoftware.com/wisbar
Highly recommended, very small memory footprint, very fast and highly customizable. Oh, and FREE. If you get it, make sure you download an XP skin. Don't use the bundled ones
EDIT: Just so you know, it doesn't officially support Phone Edition. To turn the phone on/off via the taskbar, you have to close WisBar to access the icon.

I'm just using the O2 Active Task Manager (the little arrow on the bottom of the screen) that comes by default with the OS (haven't got round yet to installing a decent Task Manager - will check out the suggestions made here!).
Nutz
WisBar Advance is one of the better ones that I've used but I will not give PocketNav a go, as there is a HUGE problem with WisBar and the XDAII.
Once you recive a call and access a notification (missed call, SMS things like that). You will not be able to recive any calls after that, if you ring your XDAII from another phone it actualy rings on the other phone but the XDA II does not register the call at all (as though no call is even being placed!!!, no missed call, no error messages NOTHING!!!)
I loved WisBar untill I've narrowed the problem down of not reciving calls to uninstalling or exiting WisBar and doing a softreset and never had the problems again...
Most other task managers I've found seem to have problems with the Phone Edition, cannot hide the Phone ID Program, cant close the Phone after it has been opend, phone keeps ringing over and over a gain even though there is not incomming calls... all are a few problems I have found with other Task managers I've tried... I will give that PocketNav a go and see how it works with phone edition...
I have tested most task managers under Phone Edition and my conclusion is that SBP's Pocket Plus is THEone...
It actually let's you see the notification area just as it's meant to be and it let's you exclude applications so they don't close but minimize (perfect for IA_Caller_Id.exe)
Best regards,
Rayan
Do you know of any freeware ones that are worth while?

SafeMode: Which programs offer it & are WM5 compatible?

I require my VARIO to have the option to boot in SafeMode. So far I've done this with Spb Pocket Plus - but since it is such a memory hog I want to get rid of it.
So far I only found two tools that offer SafeMode:
Spb Pocket Plus ( which I want to get rid of )
mCubeSafeMode or SafeMode 1.02 ( not WM5 compatible, installed fine but did not work for me )
So what other choices do I have? What other ( hopefully tiny tool ) will let me enter safemode at boot time?
Help is appreciated. Best regards.
Slightly off topic, but do all of these programs provide the same form of "safe mode"? And if so, what does that consist of? Safe Mode is not an OS feature, so I'm curious what cross over there is.
V
Sometimes programs are unable to be un-installed because some parts are loaded, or maybe a newly installed program makes trouble.
So you simply enter SafeMode and are then able to un-install these "troublemakers". Since I try out alot of stuff I don't want to miss this great feature.
I'm not sure, but what I've noticed from Spb's safemode, it disables added today screen items and startup processes. There may be more that it does too.

Yep, thats what it does. So any chances that another program will do this?
There's a buzzdev thread about this. Someone posted a file in the last post. I didn't try it out because I have that feature with pocket plus, but you may want to try it.
http://buzzdev.net/index.php?option=com_simpleboard&Itemid=59&func=view&id=15076&catid=26
If you use memmaid and look at services these 'programs' are moved to the top of the service order list, (therefore they are the first things the OS runs)... they basically have a small gui that says "you want to run safe mode" and if you say yes... they stop all the other services from starting, stop STARTUP items from running, and don't let any of the dlls load for today plugins.
The problem with mCubeSafeMode on WM5 is that services have to be certified signed to run in WM5, so even though it installs, its not allowed to run at boot time. I would have thought though that the un-certified builds on buzz/xda-dev would get around that?
I have a Jam now, no WM5 for me
Yep mCubeSafeMode would be great if it would only work with WM5 - but so far only Pocket Plus is able to do a SafeBoot on WM5 that I am aware of. I hoped I only missed another tool, but sad to say it seems to the only working version for WM5

I know! Thats what I said in my first posting - but I want to get RID OF POCKET PLUS - that is the whole reason for this thread!
DreamBoxer: Are you running a certification-free WM5 ROM though? I actually talked to the mCubeSafe author about this, and the belief is services might actually need a Microsoft certificate, but he wasn't sure.... if it doesn't work with a cert-free ROM then I guess he was correct...
I had the same problem when I had a WM5 device I despirately wanted to NOT run SPB (too much bloat) but ultimately its the only one that had it...
You could install SPB and hunt around with memmaid and the registry to try and figure out how to just set the services only and remove everything else. You would have to install the service program, (maybe using memmaid) and move it up the service list to be first... in theory it should be do-able...

list your TyTn software issues

I think we need a thread where we can post the software issues that occurs on our TyTn's.
1. I get a lot of flickering when using TCPMP
Solution: ......none
2. Spb pocket plus seems to slow down my device and cause ocational hangups
Solution: Wizbar and iLauncher
Sprite Backup 5.1 (for backup to PC) won't work with "Advanced Networking Features" turned on. It works fine with that feature turned off though.
I really prefer Pocket Plus over Wizbar, so if anybody can figure out a solution to this problem, which I'm having as well, that would rock!
Pocket Plus
If you go into the settings for SPB Pocket Plus and disable the Safe Mode feature, it will eliminate the problems you are experiencing.
At least it did for me! Good Luck.
hmmm... I've not noticed any Spb Pocket Plus slowness issues and I have safe mode enabled. I'm running v3.1.2 build 5372. What, specifically, are the symptoms?
1) pocket plus slowdowns here too!.. or any spb software for that matter
2) Agile messenger seems to sign me off when the device is in "power off" mode.. ie when I tap the power button to shut off the screen.
3) Most slowdowns seem to appear from Today Plugins

SPB Pocket Plus seems to slow down the device a lot!
Using Wisbar advance (gotta love the cascading menu) and pocketweather and pocketbreeze currently, luckily they dont seem to slow the device.
Otherwise have not had much problems with anything.

I fixed this by selecting options--video--raw frame buffer

Also im SURE my v1605 came with msn messenger but somehow disappeared now i cant find it by looking in windows folder, have tried copying instmsgr.exe from another wm5 device and also tried installing pockey msn but didnt pay the £10 MS want for it..
I will try agile or imov but cannot see why i dont have this on device anymore and hard reset didnt bring it back either

Additional apps - Stability

Hi all,
Been following this forum for a while now since the last few windows devices I've had...excellent advice and information!
The query is that now that I have a Tytn/Hermes etc, I wanted to get onto installing my "usual" applications that I've alwayshad.
SBP Weather
Resco: Explorer, Audio recorder, photoviewer, registry, today plug in (but only to show batterystatus as compact).
The delivery report patch by someone in here posted in the wizard forum
Ammar wireless addin to show status on desktop
I myself dont think this is a lot to install?
the phone is an orange M3100 unlocked with the Imate 1.20/1.07 firmware installed.
The issue is that after one of the above is installed, I get a lot of instability on the device
ITs to the point that I had to format the device on 3 occasions now and yesterday finally re-applied the firmware.
At the moment, its just got my contacts and calendar/tasks syncd with no addional software and its fine.
Has anyone got any of the above running without issues?
instability would be usually slowing down or crashing of the device.
I've also noticed that on Wed, I tried to take a pic of a box with stickers for work.
When two guys were holding the box, the cam took a pic without problems.
As soon as they put the box on the floor and I took the pic from birdseye, the cam would take a Black picture (cannot see anything).
after a while, the cam would crash and I have to soft reset to activate again
Take another pic from birdseye and same thing
I know there is a camera patch in the tmobile firmware, is it worth installing this or does the imate firmware have his already?
Thats it for me
Thanks
I'm using the M3100 with the Orange ROM and firmware:
Operator: 14.123.1.614
ROM Ver: 1.23.61.4
ROM Date: 07/13/03
Radio Ver: 1.06.00.00
Protocol Ver: 32.37.7010.01H
I don't have many stability issues at all. Mine is also unloacked so I guess it's not that.
EDIT:
Sorry I know this isn't much help to your question...
Gav.

I have the above programs installed and no instability, however, when using today plugins It tends to be slow and/or stop responding after a few hours of inactivity (mostly nights)
I use: resco explorer/reg explorer not the today plugin right now, and the wireless "on the today page" patch, and a calendar+ plugin.
and this combination works perfectly (no hanging or anything)
try not using today plugins (more than the "usual" ones) and see if it helps
Hi, I don't have an Orange, but I think it would be pretty safe to say none of the resco apps should be givin you any problems, I have the latest of all the resco apps installed, except the audio recorder, and I highly doubt any of your issues is coming from that, I had stayed away from SBP software, I seem to remember early issues with something related to the today stuff..possibly the weather, but I really can't say for sure.
At the moment I have 28 apps listed in the add/remove(not counting the resco today/addins), with no stability or lockup issues, but I only have one today plugin on, its the small todaytime written by someone here on the forum, forget who at the moment.
I'm not sure if your stability issues might be from the rom or not, I did notice on my camera the first 3rd and 6th picture didn't work, the files were real large and they wouldn't show in the viewer, but I just deleted them, and let the number grow, and it hasn't happened since.
Two apps I recommend for trouble shooting are SBP backup and SK tracker, I recently started usin these two, and haven't had any issues yet, where I had to use them..I make backups and snapshots often, but wished I had had them in the past before I tested software.
Hope some of my babbling might be of help.
The babbling does help
Thanks to all 3 of you
I'll give Resco another go but leave SBP out for now
I suppose one thing I missed out was that all those apps would be installed on the memory card rather than the phone memory... I wonder, especially with today screen apps, wouldthat be the cause.
I'll post if I have issues after Resco goes back in!
Cheers

Most today plugins must be installed in main memory.
I second that,
install the today plugins in main memory, and also if you are using flexmail install it on main memeory, otherwise you'll lose all settings in flexmail every time you restart
Hi, I'm using SPB Plus, Resco Explorer, SMSDR (Delivery Report patch), SPB Backup, SPB Insight, SPB Time, SPB diary & Phone Alarm .. All Ok. Running fine .. No noticable slow down on device (other than boot up time a bit longer)... So far so good ..
Ok re-flashed imate firmware
got resco audio, expl, reg, photo installed
got the resco batt mater on the desktop but no SBP
stable so far

*****NOOB WITH A JAMin***%#$%#$%$#%$#%$#%$#%$#%#

Hi guys,
Recently i have just purchased a brand new I-MATE jamin...i have been using it for over a week and have noticed a few things...
In the instructions manual it makes reference to some additional programs such as "skype" , "smart dialer" and "clearVUE pdf reader"....however when i recieved my phone, it did not come with these applications....any suggestions?
Also i have noticed that the included battery only lasts for MAX of 1 and a half days of normal usage...i dont use WIFI or BLUETOOTH often...just mainly use it as a phone..also the screen brightness is adjusted to the 2nd lowest scale...is the battery use normal ??? Also is it safe to buy one of those after market batteries from ebay as use it as a secondary battery????
Also i have read from various sources that the ROM of the jamin can be upgraded, although i have no idea how to do so..can anyone point me in the right direction? At the moment the specs of my JAMin are:
Rom version: 2.13.9.23 WWE
ROM date: 2/23/06
Radio version: 1_02.20.21
Protocol version: 4.1.13.9
IPL: 2.13.0001
SPL: 2.13.0001
I have no clue as to what the numbers mean except for the ROM...can anyone please tell me what the other numbers such as IPL and SPL mean? Also can anyone suggest any ROMs??
Sorry for so many questions...i am truly a noob with a JAMin...
thanks guys
YOU NEED TO DO A LITTLE MORE READING AND A LITTLE LESS ASKING
just kidding.... welcome to the forum... No n00b bashing from me...
coz then I'd have to bash myself too
1. You can download skype from the skype website - try it if you have friends that use skype.
I haven't bothered as it takes a lot of CPU, and I think it can only use the headset or the speaker on the back of the phone.
You can download clearvue pdf reader, but I prefer adobe reader lite...
smartdial AFAIK is just what happens when you are typing a number to call, and the phone picks out matching contacts before you finish typing.
2. yeah, battery is lame. Go and live next door to a mobile phone transmitter, that will help
Seriously a lot of people get a spare battery, you could try underclocking the phone using "batterystatus", but then you will lose speed.
Make sure you have the power setting to turn off when not used (it still receives calls)
3. yes you can upgrade wm6 is shiny and new but there are bugs reported in pretty much every WM6 ROM so far.

Sometimes if there is a problem upgrading you can fix it by writing a new ROM in bootloader mode
from the wiki

[one of the] ways to enter the bootloader on the Prophet:
Hold down the camera button and reset the device. (Boot Loader Mode is: Press Camera + Soft Reset, then release soft reset and keep pressing camera button till appear the Boot Loader.)
This will start the bootloader, and red/green/blue colour bands will be displayed on the device.
Once the colour bands are displayed you can connect to the device via USB.

THanks for the reply triplejay,
As far as i know, my JAMin doesn't come with smartdialer at all!!! When i dial numbers, it doesnt match any of them before i finish typing!! Could this be due to the version of my ROM??
Also with regards to ROMs, is it better to upgrade to a newer ORIGINAL ROM (ie. a ROM date is made by I-MATE) or should I upgrade to one of the "aftermarket ROMs found on this website?

well, if you depend on your phone for work or anything, I'd suggest sticking with an official ROM for now. If you don't mind the odd bug*, then join the "aftermarket" club!
*e.g. bluetooth stereo headsets work with good quality on the newest ROMS, however every time I reset the phone I have to re-pair the headset with it.
Internet works well, good integration of Windows Live, however, sometimes after a reset I have to re-confirm the internet settings for it to work.
Those are the only two I've experienced with this ROM (TNT)
You might want to wait a bit, newer ROMS are coming I think, maybe without these bugs...
I attach an example of my today screen on WM6
Hi triple jay,
Your today screen looks totally different to mine...mine is still the original WM 5.0 screen...just wondering, did you make your today screen look like that by just installing the TNT ROM? Or do you have any other programs installed such as WISBAR..
Also after a week of use, i have noticed the BACK SPEAKER of my JAMin to distort occassionally when playing ringtones (set on the HIGHEST sound level)...is my speaker faulty???
Thanks for your help mate
Hi,
1. The lack of application could be due to lack of customization on your unit and it is just a generic wm5 rom. I would suggest a hard reset (not soft but hard reset) , then press the green send button to erase all the data on your handset. Then wait around 3 seconds after the reboot has finished and customization will commence.
2. The speaker most certainly sounds like it has problems, quite common and it will probably fail. They are cheap to purchase off ebay however installation is quite a bit of work.
Hi, regarding my today screen; no Wisbar, I just have Batterystatus installed, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=270751,
that's the bottom line u can see there
the rest came with the TNT ROM
The bit above batterystatus where it says "sync" is windows live,
then above that is the htc homeplug (part of the ROM) with custom icons (not made by me)!
Reading the forums, I think quite a lot of people have had troubles with the speaker...
but I just checked mine and it seems to distort a bit on the very loudest setting too, at least with MP3s.
Like grimmy said, installation of a new one is quite a bit of work though so prob. not worth it unless it dies completely....
Hi triplejay,
I have decided not to tamper around with my ROM just yet until i am familiar with the various available ROMs.
I have instead decided to install some today screen plugins such as wisbar, spb pocket plus etc etc . Do you have any suggestions of TODAY screen plugins that don't slow my JAMin down? I have heard that SPB slows the JAMin down and also has some program compatibility issues.
Thanks
Before I updated my ROM I used to use SPB mobile shell, and SPB pocket plus.
There's no denying they take up a lot of space on your device though,
Speed wise, any slowdown seemed negligable, but then I had overclocked from day 1 so that prob. helped.
I haven't tried the latest wisbar, but the older versions I did try seemed quite good. Might try the new version out actually.

Hi triplejay,
In regards to using SPB mobile shell, and SPB pocket plus, did you install these programs into your JAMin's phone storage memory or on the SD card? I have heard that installing programs into the phone's SD card causes the programs to run slower because the phone needs time to access the programs..and also how did these programs affect your memory?? used up alot of memory ?? Also would I still be able to set my own today backgrounds using these programs or can i only use the themes designed for these programs???

In regards to using SPB mobile shell, and SPB pocket plus, did you install these programs into your JAMin's phone storage memory or on the SD card? I have heard that installing programs into the phone's SD card causes the programs to run slower because the phone needs time to access the programs..and also how did these programs affect your memory?? used up alot of memory ?? Also would I still be able to set my own today backgrounds using these programs or can i only use the themes designed for these programs???
thanks for your help, your posts have been a lot of help to a newbie like myself

no problem
I don't think SPB mobile shell gives the option to install to SD card, it's possible with Pocket Plus but not recommended, even by SPB.
I remember reading the following on the SPB site,
and after that always installing stuff that involves the today screen or system to main storage...
We strongly recommend that you not install Spb Pocket Plus to a storage card because storage card drivers can be loaded with up to a 5 second delay after system restart and important files will not be available for loading. One other reason is that Spb Pocket Plus is a system utility and some of its components run in the background. If you remove the storage card Spb Pocket Plus will not be able to load its resources.

...so the space they take up, is on the device and yes it is a fair amount of memory, maybe a fifth of available memory or something... (not sure)
you should be able to use your own pic for the background with all these I think,
the SPB extended themes for example, will set new system colours etc, with a matching background that you can change as normal.
Hi triplejay,
I have downloaded the trial versions of both SPB pocket plus and mobile shell and will install tonight and let you know how it goes...
Although i still have a couple of questions...
Backup programs such as SKTOOLS or sprite backup...should these be installed into the phone's SD card or the phone's memory ?? Also where should i install games????
Also does anyone know the date of the newest official ROM for the imate JAMin?? I have searched the imate site to no avail...
thanks guys
hey, JAMinGUY,
about the latest imate ROM, I wouldn't know, but looking at this blog post from menneisyys;
http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/in..._finding_identifying_the&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1
and then checking ftp://ftp.clubimate.com/
leads me to believe that the newest available is :
ftp://ftp.clubimate.com/JAMin_WWE_213923_2139123_022021_ship.zip
Could be wrong, just seems to make sense...
I would say definitely put games on the SD card, I've got my backup program (SPB backup) installed on SD too...
the only thing that I would be unsure of is SKtools, but it doesn't seem to run at startup, or run in the background,
so i would say it's probably OK to install to card as well.
...Unless if you did something like ran it off the card, then used it to format the card your running it off. That probably wouldn't be good, lol.
hey guys,
i have been using SPB POCKET PLUS AND SPB MOBILE SHELL (both installed in system memory) for a week now and have noticed some things....
the phone seems slower to respond to screen taps...and also when i lock the phone, sometimes i can't unlock it...i need to soft reset it....
triplejay, do u know of any programs similar to SPB POCKET PLUS that dont have these freezing issues???

unfortunately not really ...
if u haven't already tried rltoday though, that could be worth a go.
Resco explorer comes with a today plugin, but it's a bit gay, just a few icons, but resco explorer itself is quite good, try the demo if u havent already....
and a couple of threads below this one you will find the htc homeplug (for wm5), personally that homeplug together with batterystatus have filled all my own shortcut related needs....
