Newbie With a Himalaya - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 General

Hello, this is my first post, and as you can see in the topic it's my first himalaya, i have bought a used himalaya (M1000) A.K.A. XdaII with a broken screen , i have bought one Digitizer & LCD screen so i can't wait until it arrives so that i can play with it .
I have found this site when i was looking for a way to open the Pda, so i registered and i have found one huge comunity that i am glad to be apart, hope i can help somebody later when i know a bit more about this awsome machine.
So i would like ask for help to all you guy's and gal's, what should i install when i have repaired the Pda? What O.S. (wm 2k5 or wm 2k3 se), what cool apps and i am thinking of buying an sd card for wireless (to do a bit of war driving, and surf the net at home) so i would also like to know what kind of sd card are compatible with the himalaya, i have read that the scandisk with 256 mg isn't compatible in the 2k3 se but is it compatible in the 2k5 :? ??
Well thank's to all that read this post !

I am really starting to hate my Alpine!

OK got a Himalaya and an Alpine (XDA branded) and my Himalaya is very happy now running WM2005 1.60a and the Alpine is running the O2 1.10 ROM.
I had forgotten how unstable WM2003se was compared to WM2005!
The phonepad keeps breaking, have to reinstall from cab files regularly, had to do this on the Himalaya too so it's not the particular ROM or anything I don't think.
Crashes, and lockups, corruption on the today screen that either require a soft reset or messing about changing today themes.
My problem is this, on the Himalaya running 2005, I have many apps installed to my SD card, which is fine, but when I need to use WiFi I need to unplug that to use the SDIO WLAN card, so I am unable to then use many of the programs installed.
Damn shame to let this Alpine gather dust, considering it has 128mb ram and rom, and could run 2005 so much better.
Are there any any newer English ROMs for the Alpine, or should I sit and wait with it boxed up until someone releases something else for it?
I was very annoyed at people working on 2005 for xda2 at the time as I believed that we would get grief from MS about it. It seems that, on the whole, that hasn't happened.
I got a 2i thinking that it would be the next upgrade, therefore when an even newer one comes along - ie Universal - I would be better placed to flog the 2i to pay for it. I'm almost starting to regret that decision as I would dearly love the have 2005 on my 2i...and if I had kept the xda2 I would have been enjoying 2005y goodness by now. Grrr!!
Bring on Universal that's what I say!!

where can us xda 2i owners find th imate rom!?
Yeah, I thought you had to enter your IMEI to access images on the i-mate site.
Have you got a direct link please?
Here!
Many thanks, getting it now
Alan,
I read your thread and have similar dislikes about me Alpine. I have an O2 XDAIIi.
How did your upgrade go?
I downloaded the ROM upgrade but haven't installed it. I am really green at this and not sure how/if I should back up the ROM I have in case I need to restore. Did you do that? Can you guide me on how?
If the ROM upgrade was successful, were you able to install 2005? Again, can you point me in the direction of that download, and instructions.
Greatly appreciated,
Kyle
Try this page, it's about the most up to date ROM for the 2i at the moment. I've had no problems with it at all.
Urm.. you didn't actually post a link?
I am using the i-mate one at the moment, too many people seem to be having problems with the O2 1.11 ROM
True
Sorry, blonde moment there.

I reckon the problem with the new O2 ROM is the radio stack is still the original one. The radio stack on the ROM in the above link is the much better I-mate one with the updates of the O2 ROM.

Qtek S100 or S110?

HI,
This is my first post as I have not yet purchased this device and needed some advice before buying. In fact I am contemplating between the Qtek s100 and the s110. I know that essentially the only difference is the upgraded memory from 64mb to 128mb and the colour. I was also told despite the fact that the 2 devices are identical (apart memory) the 128mb version runs a bit faster because of the added memory. Is this true?
I already have a 1Gb sd card and plan on using it for storage and installing programs. Will the extra memory come in handy once I start installing programs? I currently own a palm E2 and the programs in the Palm OS are pretty miniscule, in the pocket pc is it the same or will I need several mb per application? I did test out the s110 and it seemed to function pretty fast (compared to my E2) , I inserted my sd card and was able to view pics and video impressively quick with the installed beta player.
Another issue is the price. Here in Paris I am able to sign a 1 year contract with SFR and buy the s100 at a discount phone shop for 120Euros!! and the s110 for 180-200Euros. Is it worth the extra 60-80euros for the added memory? Perhaps it would be better to buy the s100 and with the extra cash invest it in a sdwifi card? Or wait altogether for a newer device such as the qtek 9100.
Also I read in another post that it may be possible to upgrade the m500 (orange) to windows mobile 5 in the future and if that being the case would the 128mb of ram be more usefull?
And is it quite easy to flash the unit to change the language from french to english if i decide in the future?
Other than that, what does everyone think of the magician? They just released the qtek 9100, with the sliding keypad but i dont see it being that great an avantage as it adds weight and maked the unit a bit thicker, taking away the advantage of it being a real portable unit. Included wifi obviously would be the biggest advantage, and of course mobile 5 (perhaps).
I know I've asked many questions here and appreciate any advice. I'm sure no matter what decision I make I wont really go wrong but just trying to invest in a tool that will at least meet my needs and stay current for at least a year before its outdated!!!! Thanks for any help and advice in advance!
The S110 is the better choice for sure. I use one myself and yes, the 128MB of Ram make live really easy - I installed everything (all programs I use and thats a lot) into Ram still have 40+MB free for program running. I would install into RAM for sure on a S110, on a S100 you may want to do it on a SD-Card but I would not do that if it can be avoided and it can with an S110 (wow that rhymes). Trust me, you WILL thank god for not thinking about every MB twice - the S110 with its 128MB can handle everyhting. Never ever would I choose a version with less RAM when one with more is avail.
The other device you're talking about is the K-Jam (iMate calles it this way). I would stay away, the keyboard is useless (at least to normal users) and it only has a 200MHz CPU!
Flashing the Magician (like S100 or S110) is pretty easy, the other one (9100) is based on another hardware platform (TI CPU instead of Intel one) the it will take a while for modded Roms to arrive.
Wifi can be added to the S110 using a SDcard, you dont wifi all the time don't you. I would never choose the 200MHz device with wifi over the 416MHz without given the fact that wifi is an easy addon, more CPU power is not.
WM5 will not likely come for S110 but who needs it? I dont get all the fuss about WM5. I used it on a HTC universal for a few hours and its not that special. The new storage (that uses stone-age-speed ROM) will make it slower in fact.
Thanks for your advice.
I figured it can never hurt to have more memory. I just wasnt sure if the ppc used as that much in terms of applications compared to the Palm os which is negligible.
May programs are less than a megabyte. I have more than half a dozen loaded on my palm E2 and still have space left on the paltry 32mb ram! Well wouldn't be the case with the magician.
I suppose the 128mb model (S110) also uses free space for caching, so if there is only 64mb vs 128 it would make a difference in performance. And the price difference of less than 100euros I guess is reasonable as its factory done.

Don't forget that the OS on the Magician is from Micro$oft who are notorious for memory-hungry OSs and applications on ANY platform. :?
The more memory the better.
One thing to consider is battery life. How does the 110 compare with the 100? Keeping that extra RAM alive requires power, and that has to come from the battery.
Any 110 users care to comment?
With normal useage I get about 2.5 days on my XDA Mini...
Qtek S110 + WiFi SD cards
Hello Everybody, need some advice...
Am new to mobile/PDAs and am thinking of buying the S110 but want to wifi enable it as well as store MP3s/AACs too ...
Sandisk do a WiFi SD card with 256mb built in - has anybody used one of these or know whether its compatible. Web research suggests it is but it would be nice to know it works [and its failures] from someone already using this type of connectivity.
Thanks

AFAIK WiFi/256MB sdio cards work in magician (search this forum for more about it), anyway pls consider the following:
- Sandisk is NO MORE producing WiFi/256MB cards (however they can be still found in some e-stores or ebay)
- 256MB is too small for carrying MP3
- This card is more than 1cm longer than ordinary SD cards so it will jut out from the top of your magician: it'll ruin device's esthetics and, possibly, led to card breaking
- Next month many new wm 5.0 devices will be released, they'll offer integrated WiFi, more powerful camera, EDGE, radio FM, 128MB of storage and, of course, windows mobile 5.0. If i were u i'd wait for them to come.
- If u can't wait a month, then have a look at new Qtek 9100 a.k.a. I-Mate K-jam a.k.a. SPV M3000 a.k.a. HTC Wizard: it comes with integrated WiFi, WM 5.0 and qwerty keyboard.
- If u still want a Magician, then i think u should consider buying a S100 (instead of s110) thus saving about 100$. I have it and, as long as u move all installed programs to SD card or storage, i can assure u RAM is enough for any application (IMHO, of course)

Thx Paul
so the bottom line is that its a bit of a lottery but the fact that SanDisk are pulling out of this market must mean its unlikely to get any better for the users, is that right?

Guys,
Here is a roadmap of HTC products for 2006.
http://www.mobigeeks.fr/stories.php?story=05/11/14/4058495
Unfortunately its in french but actually easy to follow.
I'm using the S110 now and had an MDAc before that and I must say that there is nearly no difference with keeping the 128MB RAM of the S110 alive opposed to the 64MB versions. I monitored that closely the last week and I must say the the difference is minimal, like getting 2-5% longer life with the 64MB version but the comfort of having more RAM than you'll prolly ever use makes more than up for that.
The thing with "waiting for the prohet": When the prophet is ready to launch there will be a new one in the pipeline that would be worth waiting for. There will always be a new/better one at the horizon and if you go that "I'll wait for that device" way you'll never buy one of them because you'll always look at the next model that appears better but is a few month away. That said I'm more than happy with my S110 (just bought the SpecTec Wifi and use it with the Socket driver and WiFi companion) and I'm loving it, I couldn't wish for more. Sure I miss the biometric feature of my old iPAQ 5455 but hey the S110 is great. Until the bring a S110 with fingerprint scanner I'm not interested. I dont need intergreated WiFi (the SpecTec makes up for that very well) and I dont need more CPU power (PHM can push the 416MHz up a noth if needed) and a keyboard (like KJam, I'm so used to Resco Keyboard Pro) and for sure I dont need WM5 (buggy slow OS in my view).
That said the S110 is perfect!!!

SPV M1000 Help, if possible?

Hey all,
I just got myself a second hand SPV M1000 with Windows Mobile 2003SE.
This forum seems to have such a massive range of knowledgable people!
I have a few basic questions I hope someone can answer...
I would like to find a WIFI card that will work if possible? SANDISK? Which part number?
Will Windows Mobile 2005 work on the M1000? Is it worth the upgrade?
How does one go about upgrading? Im a computer geek, but dont have much experience when it comes to PDAs....
Sorry for the noobie questions, but searching for this just seems to bring up heaps and its impossible to find the answers I'm looking for.
MAny thanks, and I'm sure I'll be a frequent visitor to these forums!
David
wifi sdio cards from sandisk and socket works if they dont have onboard memory

if it's worth it guess you can check ppls posts in the 2005 forum and in buzz's
how to do it should be describet in the zip from with 2005

Should I buy the Atom?

Hi All,
I appreciate all your help with this. I currently own a Magician and love the size factor of the Atom. Is everyone happy with their Atom and would you recommend getting one. I know the new ROM upgrade makes a huge difference in performance speed and such. Also, I read somewhere that the Atom does not have a button lock so you can only have the power on button work(have it in your pocket and not accidentally dial out, that sort of thing) Is this so, and if so has the new Rom upgrades added this feature or is there a way around it.
Thanks so much in advance.
Todd
I also forgot to ask: I have just downloaded the new Windows Vista and there is no longer activesync but a new program. Has anyone had any experience with Vista and will their Atom still sync?
Update the Vista using windows update and you will get the mobile sync function. Does not use activesync anymore. Read this info somewhere here
You might want to reconsider the Atom. Consider a Prophet or Wizard

Hmm...Why?!Are you used all this devices?I sure that you does not... Atom better, faster and more usefull (but also more expensive) than both Prophet and wizard.
If you like atom go and get one (or HP 6828 if you like it more),one device that may be better (if you realy need keyboard) and can also be considered its new 9600 (Hermes) - also great device,by far better than 9100 (wizard)
Well the Atom Exec release date is 4th July and it will be retailing for a price of $1130 and that include Bluetooth headset and IR keyboard. so your problem might well be solved, if you dont mind a matte grey case and dont mind paying an extra $280 over the HP then the Exec could be your bet.

Thanks all for your advice,
I did buy the Atom and love it. Far superior to my old Magaician. Its love again!

Like Todd, I'm looking to upgrade my magician, I was looking at the Hermes, but I don't really want a real keyboard, but the Hermes looked to have all the right functions. Having look around, and getting confused by other brand names this is what I have concluded.
The prophet is the same as the wizard but without a keyboard, so hopefully the Atom is the same as the Hermes but also without a keyboard. I can't find any reviews to confirm my hunch so I hope someone can answer my question or tell me where I can look.
All I want is WM5, built in wifi, and fast (400 Mhz +) processor.
Does Atom have a jog dial like the Hermes?
What type of memory card.
Thanks in advance
fingers88,
the atom is its own brand (not htc) I have had it for over a month now and it rocks. kicks butt on the magician. it
is mini sd and no jog but it is not missed, buy it, you will be glad you did.
Todd
Iam an atom user... have been for 1 month...
and I have fallen in love with it...
it's my mobile buddy... a welcome upgrade from my xda2 since I divorced the love relationship, because it was too damn huge!
I recently dropped it from 5 ft to a stone tiled hotel bathroom and it survived 100%... just like my xda2 has done...
also a great thing about the atom is it hasa notch/hook on the top left corner for a lanyard... it is an ideal size for a lanyard too.
i've some major scratchesonthe plastic... but idont care about them... the screen is finewith a protector.

Can you need separate thread for MDA CHARMER II?

Hello...
first- excuse me for my bad english, i am from czech republic
i would like to registrate this category in HTC section. The name of this category is "HTC CHARMER/Qtek 110/MDA Compact II"
This all three names are for one PDA/MDA.
Please, answe me on mail s[email protected] or ICQ 114625013
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_PhoneModels
Looks like the Qtec 110 is a Magician
Why dont you just say that you dont want a Charmer sub forum. I have seen a couple of sarcastic comments on this already about people posting Charmer questions. They have to post here, they have no-where else to post questions.
A Charmer sub forum would be helpful, the device is different from the Magician, even if it looks the same.
I like my Charmer, it works well. I have problems with it sometimes and I would like to post, I have not though mainly due to 'processor snobbery' that sometimes creeps into this forum. Thats sad, because XDA Developers is a brilliant site and is sometimes let down by sarcasm.
Regards Jeff
A2DP Bluetooth
I also have an MDA Compact II (charmer) and find it difficult to find specific advice for this model on the forum. I used to have an imate jam (magician) and was able to install a simple bluetooth stack patch that worked perfectly and allowed me to use my logitech BT headphones.
I cannot find any similar patch for the charmer on this site to allow me to upgrade the useless WM5 BT stack and allow A2DP support. Anyone else found a patch that works for this device?
Well, I can understand what others are thinking consider Charmer seems to have an extremly small user group as compared with others. The good thing, is however, Charmer is very like the Wizard `internally` and hence most of the Charmer problems can be solved using Wizard's stuff. As far as the wiki goes, it seems that Charmer is only sold on UK and German, hence the number of limited users.
And, wopffej, for a member with only 1 post, you are certainly making a huge sweeping statemnt
For others, read here.

Yep your right. A bit overblown! Anyway 2 posts now.
Still would be nice to have a Charmer sub forum.
Regards Jeff
I totally agree with all the comments here regarding a new sub forum. Admittedly some of the problems can be resolved using the replies from the magician but in theory there is a large charmer community out there. Folks with charmers want to speak to like minded people also with charmers. I have had a Wallaby, BA and now a Charmer and think it deserves its own forum. Thats me had my tuppence worth..thanks JD76..

Its totally bricked now, by installing a Wizard Rom youve trashed the bootloaders. you could of fixed it by using the tmobile mdac2 rom but it needs to go back to the manufacturer now. and dont try and blame me, you didnt follow the instructions i laid out for my debranded rom, it didnt work cos you installed it on aku1 bootloaders when i clearly put, it needs aku2 bootloaders and how to check if you had them already.
what is new with separate thread? this is discrimination :-D
Yeah lets get back to the original request, remove these spurious posts!!. How about a separate sub forum for us charmer owners??? surely someone must have the clout out there to make a decision. any backers....
who can create new category for mda charmer.... ? we must say to anybody, who has privilege for creating this category (mda compact II - charmer)
I take it none of the adminstrators are listening to us Charmer (aka Compact II) owners. Can anyone??? clarify if a sub category is possible????????????
Thanks....
i speak english very little... who is able to create this new subforum?
Check the main page, Charmer Forums now open!!
Good one Dave much appreciated. There is a lot of Charmer users out there. So after requesting and the administrators being so kind to create lets get posting!!!!!
