Question: Connecting to the internet via serial port? - Networking

I have a T-Mobile Pocket PC phone(more information in my profile). I have a USB and Serial port cable for it as well. Is there anyway I can use my serial or usb cable to connect to the internet on my main computer, but using the connection from my phone. Someone from another forum told me this forum had a solution, but I have no idea what to search for.
Thanks in advance!

The main key is using the Wireless Modem software.
Read this for a long history
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=29493
Good news: You can also upgrade to the 2003 version of pocketPC
4.01.12 ENG O2euro from
http://lumpistefan.dyndns.org/
which include a WModem too for 2003 version.

Thanks for your help! I almost have it working...I'm just having trouble installing the ROM version.

Wireless Modem in new ROM updates

Hi,
Ok after the breakthrough regarding the ROM updates for QTEK 1010 and it was first revealed here on xda-develpers.com we have some new options in the QTEK now one of them is the WM.
Did anyone manage to use the Wireless Modem via IRDA because its not working the first thing is that the computer is seeing the device on infrared but not as a modem and i dont have an *.inf file to indentify it. If anyone managed to use his QTEK or any XDA via infrared to connect his laptop to the internet using GPRS plz explain how.
thanks
to irda on win2k/xp

Install software at own risk, but this exposes a permanent COM port using IrDA. Also nukes Wireless Link in the process.
Setup a manual modem, select the COM port from above, presto!
Ummm its a good idea but i am not sure if this will work on Windows XP... what do you think?
it does
it does, but as with all things apply with care
Tried it
I tried this a long time ago, IRCOMM2k works on XP but the problem is that i couldn't figure out how to setup a IR generic Modem working on that port.
Yes please, this is a good article,
I installed the ircomm2k on my XP, but how to configure the connection from my laptop to connect to the internet via my XDA PDA as an external modem?
to setup xda as a modem
1. Install Ircomm. note which com port is assigned as permanent.
2. Add new modem: standard 33600
3. Select com port from item 1 as the com port of choice
4. Edit modem profile in devices settings, in Extra Initialisation Commands add AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","apn name"
5. VERY IMPORTANT: set flow control to OFF
6. Set port speed to 115200 ONLY
Set up a Mobile Web net connection as per your operator
Select your above modem
Align xda with irda port; select start on Wmodem app
Double click Mobile Web connection.
Surf. It's OK but not as fast as a GPRS card.
OR you can wait for O2 to eventually post some instructions...
Thank you very much for your feedback
I did all what you asked me to do, but its not working it gave me an error message:
Error 692: There was a hardware failure in the modem (or other connecting device).
I replaced AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","apn name" BY AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","apn01" same as Im using in my PDA. Am I right?
Something I didn't understand in your reply:
(Set up a Mobile Web net connection), you mean a normal dial-up connection?
One more thing, what do you mean by (select start on Wmodem app)?
Do I have to do anything in my PDA before I connect from my laptop? or do I have to do anything in my PDA configuration or connections settings?
Please help me, I want to use the Gprs on my laptop, no need to pay for 2 services, one for the PDA and other for my laptop
Best regards, Ali Alsaffar [email protected]
"select start on Wmodem app" - this means go into the Wireless Modem application on the xda, select IrDA (if thats now you are connecting) and then tap the Start button.
When you've done that, go the the DUN connection on laptop and connect as you normally do.
Unfortunatly I dont have "Wireless Modem application" on my XDA from where I can get it?
I thought the command was:
AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","apn name","",0,0
I don't know about the command but what Im sure about it is that wModem application is mandatory, so from where I can get it?

HI. I HAVE AN OLDISH LAPTOP RUNNING WIN ME. WILL IRCOMM2K WORK ON ME OR IS IT INTENDED (AS NAMED) FOR WIN 2K AND XP ONLY?

Hi
The wireless modem will be available in the next ROM update from the xda team. I understand that this will be released in the next couple weeks - they are in the final stages of testing.
We will highlight the new ROM on our homepage with a link to the downloadable files.

Hmm... really good question. ME is an update to 98 as I recall, but a clunky upgrade.
Way to check: Setup a new modem. When it asks which COM port you wish to use, if you can select Virtual Infrared COM port then it should work fine.
Get the instructions at www.o2.co.uk/xda on Help and Support.
Anyone know what the T-Mobile USA network connections for using WModem are?
For UK O2 they are:
Primary DNS - 193.113.200.200
Alternate DNS - 193.113.200.201
User name - O2Web
Password - password
Has anyone used wmodem in the US with T-Mobile as a service provider?
Thanks,
JP
Qtek as wireless modem
I also have oldish ME Laptop computer. I did exactly as described on O2 support site. It does not work. The modem on laptop immediately disconnects saying it's not responding properly.
I have tried several cooked versions of the 4..00.16 Eng T-Moble and the 4.00.11 ENG WM2003 roms and niether one installs the WModem app. Any ideas why?
I have a T-Mobile version of the PPC, radio stack 6.24
WM with old laptop computer
It worked for me. I could connect my oldish ME notebook computer to internet over gprs using WM in xda. I used the extra string from o2 and just changed the access point name.
It goes as this:
AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","apn"
It works, but the WM just stops responding the moment you disconnect the connection from PC. The PC waits and waits for the confirmation and then hangs up saying no reponse. But as long as you are connected it works very well.

Using the XDA II as Modem with IrDa

Hi
I have been trying to use my XDA II as a modem and every time I try it give me a error. Error 692 Hardware Failure..
Can anyone pleasr help me with this?
I have a similar problem, please help!
I stopped trying via IRDA and set it up via the USB Sync cable, using GPRS. Works like a charm.
I was going cross-eyed trying to make it work and it wouldn't. Took about 15 minutes with the cable.
Is not working with the USB cable either
I had followed the instruction on PPC website (which seems identical to those on the XDA II official website):
http://www.ppcw.net/?itemid=1656&catid=80
but no luck... I'm still getting an error message... usually 732,
have you done anything different?
Please help Thx,
Chris
Did you successfully install the HTC USB Modem?
Was ActiveSync closed down, as it must be?
Did you use the USB Dialler program to make the connection?
Did it show the HTC USB Modem?
Was GPRS connected on the XDA?
Did you enter the correct User ID and Password?
A friend of mine tells me they're not necessary, as it works off your IMEI code, I've never tried it without them.
Dear ardarby,
Thank you for your help... here are my answers.
Did you successfully install the HTC USB Modem?
Yes
Was ActiveSync closed down, as it must be?
More than that: I disable USB a mean for active Sync to connect to the device, both on the PC and on the PPC
Did you use the USB Dialler program to make the connection?
Yes
Did it show the HTC USB Modem?
Yes
Was GPRS connected on the XDA?
I think so... how do I see it
Did you enter the correct User ID and Password?
Yes
A friend of mine tells me they're not necessary, as it works off your IMEI code, I've never tried it without them.
I am now getting an error which is something like error 734... any clue?
Thanks,
Chris

Question:Wireless Modem for T-Mobile...modem not found!

Hey everyone,
Ok, I'm having trouble using my XDA as a Wireless Modem. I have already taken the following steps:
1) Setup the modem and connection on my computer (using the many guides found on these forums)
--I used internet2.voicestream.com as an access point...is that correct?
2) Ran the wmodem.exe application and hit start
3) Dialed *99# from my computer via Serial Cable
When I connect it gives me the following error on my Computer:
"Opening port...
Error 633: The modem (or other connecting device) is already in use or is not configured properly."
I know I am using the correct port (COM 1), because Activesyinc recognizes my XDA via serial port.
Obviously the computer is not recognizing my XDA as a modem. Did anyone else have this problem? If someone could please help me it would be GREATLY appreciated!
Ensure ActiveSync is not using the serial port, i.e. close the ActiveSync on your XDA before running WModem, i.e. your ActiveSync on your laptop should show as disconnected.
Here are my config:
(1) From Windows 200 / XP / 2003, create a modem as follows:
Standard 33600 bps Modem (yes don't choose higher rate one)
-- Maximum Port Speed = 115200
-- Extra Initialization commands: AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","INTERNET2.VOICESTREAM.COM"
(this is for US T-Mobile users, other others, change the internet2.voicestream.com to your phone company equivalent)
-- Flow Control: Port Speed=115200, Flow Control= None
(2) Connect your serial cable to your XDA I
(3) Run the Wmodem, and click "start", you have to ensure your phone connection is online to be able to click "start"
(4) Now try to dial from your laptop using the connection created in (1)
username: voicestream
password: (empty)
Dial: *99#
You are on!
Hmm still not working...
Can you check your Diagnostics tab in the modem config and see if it reads:
"Hardware ID mdmgen336"
Also, I am running T-Mobiles release of 4.01.16 ENG. Obviously this did not come with the wmodem.exe application. I just downloaded it off these forums and transfered it. Do you think its possible that the 4.01.16 ENG did not come with the neccessary files to make the XDA a modem? If so, what ROM can I get that has wmodem.exe, or is there a place where I could download some .inf files to make it work?
Appreciate your/anyones help!

This will never work. You can´t get it working, since the wmodem application didn´t work with this ROM version. You should change to ROM 4.01.12 and then try it again....

Alright thanks, I thought it would since the wmodem application ran in 4.01.16
EDIT: Oh one more question...now I know why I have 4.01.16 again. When I go to the kitchen. Which option do I select for T-mobile in the USA? Is it No AutoConfig data? Thanks.

USB Modem issues

Sorry for the noob question but I've tried searching this forum and can't find the answer. I've just purchased the Athena and am having troubles setting up my laptop (XP Pro) to use the Athena as a modem through USB. For some reason it doesn't recognize it as a modem. Are there certain drivers that I need to install. Thanks for any help and I am loving the new device, its a huge upgrade from my tytn.
how do you have it setup?
Is activesync running?
Have you activated ict on the athena and set it to usb?
Take a look at this link:
http://www.pdagold.com/articles/detail.asp?a=269
I found this link browsing thru _the_ repository for using your software on the PPC/Smartphone - Menneisyys!
http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=510&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1
Chances are, if you've ever had a problem figuring out how to use your PPC for something, Menneisyys have been there first - and then made a nice guide of it.

Access to XDA Orbit (1) via USB and IP-address?

Hi. Is it possible to connect the xda orbit via usb-cable to a PC/Notebook and give it a regular IP-Adress then? I want to use finchsync (http://www.finchsync.com on Kubuntu Linux) but obviously it cannot find the PDA because it has no IP address
The next question is, if anybody got KMobiletools and the XDA work together -- not via bluetooth but via usb? Possible too?
Thanks!
WhiteRabbit
It's certainly possible because I used to plug mine in the USB for updating QuickGPS. Don't ask me how though...
