Custom vs. Stock? - Samsung Galaxy A20 Questions & Answers

Hello.
I was wondering which one I should go for: Custom or Stock OneUI with root.

Its a preference, you should try both and see which suits your needs better.
Both have Pro's & Cons.

You might want to give it a go with root first. As for theming, GoodLock is going to provide you somewhat decent level of UI customization.

Question regarding roms

Can someone tell me what's the difference between roms & stock?. I'm new when it comes to roms, & I see not much difference in some. No hate please.
Is it similar to jailbreak tweaks etc?. Coming from iPhone, & giving android a shot again.
Cheers guys

ROMs are what your phone runs on. Stock is a ROM, but it's stock, unaltered. 'ROMS' are user modified version of stock with additional features / customizations / optimazations.

They're all ROMs, whether stock or custom, a ROM is just a name that's used for the operating system on your phone. I suppose if we were going to compare to Apple jailbreaking, a custom ROM would be similar, but it goes much further in depth with the level of customization. Custom ROMs usually have added features and optimisations that you won't find on the stock firmware. If you need a good guide on how to unlock, root, flash, I have authored a very detailed one here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206928

Which should be the best (working) ROM for Samsung J5 (SM-J500f)?

I triedAOSP and Lineage OS. But both of them showed the fading and discoloration of the screen during boot, meaning that they were compatible. I am currently downloading the Stock firmware but would like to know whether there are any better ROMs out there than these.
Edit: The stock firmware is giving invalid zip error.

Have you installed Lollypop (5.1.1) before trying the ROMs?

No, I have not. Should I flash a Marshmallow ROM first?

No, read OP, you need Lollypop firmware, just install 5.1 then install this Ron or any time that requires firmware 5.1
You also need recovery compatible with 5.1 like TWRP from Vince (OFFICIAL TWRP) you can download from TWRP site https://twrp.me/devices/j5lte.html
It all depends, if you want to have great camera or you are into taking pictures, never flash AOSP roms, because their camera is a loot worst compared to touchwiz camera (samsungs camera app is optimized like hell)
If you are curious and want to unveil your phone's power I suggest you AOSP/Lineage based ROMs.
Camera isn't enhanced as stock propietary crapwiz one, but works fine. If you love pictures, better you go with a pro Cybershot camera or similar.
I prefer paying the price of freedom and use free software than stay tied to proprietary closed source crapwiz.

Yup it almost works on all Samsung MM based Custom Roms or Ports like A5UX Rom , J2UX Rom etc.
Im also pretty keen to know what ROM you guys think is most suitable ? I am currently using stock 5.1.1 rom on J500F, anything better out there ? Would doing a factory reset on stock 5.1.1 and removing bloatware maybe be the best ? Not trying to hijack the thread but as mentioned im also looking for something as stable with less bloatware and better battery life. Thank You !

You can't get better battery life than stock lollipop + hard debloat, period.
Lollipop is the best for me, plus camera sucks on all custom roms
the smoothest rom is XeonHD , and AOSPextended both are extremely optimized except the camera is not that good , if you don't take pics often i suggest that you install either of them
AOSP-CAF based, are the goods. XenonHD is the better Lineage based rom. You have many options to choose one that fits your needs. Camera is fine, I don't complain about that, You should try to choose the better one that fits your needs.

Picture quality is extremely important for me, i am leaning towards stock.
Have you ran into any problems with XenonHD Taivo ? You say the camera is fine, do you mean its not that much worse than with the stock rom but a little bit of a degradation ? Thanx
i didn't run into any problem in xeon an excellent rom , i recommend it

i could always give them both a try, you guys recommend this method to debloat ? https://www.xda-developers.com/uninstall-carrier-oem-bloatware-without-root-access/
Then just need a recovery that will work with stock and XeonHD rom

@Ragazzza debloat zip is very nice if you're in stock. XenonHD satisfied me, very nice and smooth ROM. You should give a try to test by yourself. My better pictures I got with my Cybershot camera. Pictures are fine for daily use, and you have Vince's TWRP that works in lollipop and marshmallow, you choose the correct for your device. And from within TWRP you could debloat too, using the embedded explorer or flashing Ragazzza zip or whatever you want even with no root in your system.

Without twrp, better you try that no root debloat you show us before..
And if you follow correctly the steps to flash twrp, dont need to be afraid. Its from twrp that you could flash a debloater zip, for example, even without root...
You can stay with stock debloated, twrp and no root.
Hope you understand.

Custom ROMs for H990DS

Hi guys,
Now that we have root in our H990DS, do you know if any custom ROMs is being developed or ported to our devices?
What are your expectations? Do you think any ROM is coming anytime soon?
I am particularly interested in AOSP based ROMs.

I too am waiting for a custom rom as it would make things a LOT easier BUT i dont think anybody is interested in making roms for H990ds version as not many know that it has been rooted and even if somebody wants to the H990ds model is extremely complicated with secondary hardware and what not. The best hope we have is to request @emdroidle as he was the one to achieve root and by now probably knows the phone in and out.
Personally i feel, being on stock is more advisable... camera and sound are important factors that made us to choose this phone, Especially,,,H990DS has more features like B&O play and no other versions has this feature enabled...May be it would take some time for this development...
I too like AOSP, Yes...may be we need to wait...
A custom kernel with this stock rom would also make this device great...lets wait...
I really hate the LG UI and I can't believe they are able to make this phone lag sometimes. Am a big fan of AOSP/Google UI.
I will surely miss the Quad DAC and camera features, but I am already using google camera most of the time anyways. And Idon't care about the second screen.

LineageOS 14.1 is being worked on the for the H990DS. It requires a few special hacks and tips to get working, and they're also working on a way to get second screen support going too. I suggest you follow that thread and express your interest in the H990DS builds to encourage more development. Its been in the works for months now. Only thing they're unsure about is the DAC support as that uses proprietary code and they don't know where it is.

You haven't heard of D.O.T.S? Or the mk2000 kernel?
have you tried superv20, it's not really a "custom rom" but a customisation of an official rom for a "better user experience".

I do not own or contribute to any of these.
Im currently using SuperV20 with the pixel launcher as the stock launcher on my H990DS, its a really good rom, all lag from the stock lg rom is gone and its really snappy

Hey, can you in brief share the steps you used to go from stock to SuperV20? That would be really helpful.
From what I understand, 1)Downgrade to 2016 firmware to root using dirtysanta and twrp with it.
2) Flash Super V20 using twrp.
Is that right?
Yeah, I want to know the steps you took as well. Also, what exactly is the SuperV20 ROM? Is it just something that looks like LG's UI and makes it faster, or is it a completely new UI? Also, does it have the capability of using the V20's second screen and quad DAC? Send screenshots of the UI if you can. Thanks!

Ok thanks! Now I just need to unlock bootloader of my H990DS, install twrp and flash the ROM.
lg v20 918DS
Is the rom and method also applicable for the 918DS ?
I'm planning to buy it, but have not found yet an option for root.
Thanks for for advice

Best custom ROM for Pixel-like experience without Samsung apps / addons

Hey, basically title. I'm using LineageOS which is great but I need Bluetooth to work right now. So can you guys recommend me the best custom ROM with Pixel elements? Also without Samsung bloatware. Thanks in advance!

Stay on stock causs when your phone mess up you be right back on here like hey how do I fix my phone

Use the team pixel ROM, literally every Samsung app (apart from a few essentials like camera) are removed. Also Samsung apps that are kept are debloated themselves making it great for performance and battery. I use it and I would definitely recommend it.
I'm using Alexis ROM (see my signature) as my daily driver and i'm happy with it's performance. ROMs nowadays will give you option to not include any samsung apps during installation phase.

Can someone recommend me, custom rom with the best UX?

I don't need full functionality or else. the reason i want custom rom is to find a better UX, most user friendly as possible than the stock rom.
i tried havoc. and i think it got too much thing that i don't need.
can you guys recommend me custom rom that really simple to use. less unnecessary app. got better UI/UX than stock rom. very lightweight if possible?
Try reloaded CAF
