Hey guys new to xda and rooting, I've rooted in the past but on older easier phones. I'm trying to flash twrp on my op6t and when I run fastboot boot twrp.img the phone changes to fastboot screen and stays there untill I force restart. I am using abd 1.43 and I am running Android 10.3.7 T-Mobile converted to international oem unlock. I've tried newest official twrp.img and I've tried an unofficial one I found linked in another thread that was said to work better with Android 10. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The only thing I can think of is to double check that you have the correct twrp.img file for your op6t, and not one for a op6. Your adb command is correct, and as long as you did a ' fastboot devices' command, and it gave you a good result, you should be able to boot to twrp using the correct .img file..
One last thought..... did you insure that the twrp.img file is in the same folder that you started your terminal from?
Wait, one more thing that I just noticed in your question.... You say that after giving the adb command of fastboot boot twrp.img the phone changes to the fastboot screen.. You are actually in the fastboot/bootloader screen already when you give that command, yes? Just checking...

Yes it is in the same abd folder, I have twrp-3.4.0-3-enchilada I found one labeled twrp-3.4.0-fajita just now will see if that is any better

That is your problem, then. Enchilada is for a op6, and fajita is for the op6t. Use the second one, and you'll have success.
From now on, whenever you're getting roms or whatever for your op6t, always go for the fajita versions, if they give you a choice.

I wouldn't be of any help to you on that one. I've never flashed it, 'ethical hacking' and that sort of thing is outside my wheelhouse. But there is plenty of help on this great forum, someone should be able to help you out. Best to you!!
Soooo I'm gonna hijack this thread. Yee-haw.... Anywho ...
I have a OP6T Tmobile variant. I have unlocked it and converted it to international version, extracted the boot.img, patched it with magisk and achieved root. but every time I try to install a fajita labelled TWRP, or any recovery, it does the same as Donnymeoghy... Im in fastboot, do the
Code:
fastboot boot twrp.img
and it goes from the text screen to the OnePlus Fastboot mode wallpaper and hangs. Sometimes when I force it to reboot it does the Qualcomm Crash Mode thing... but I just reboot it again and it's fine.. but TWRP doesn't install. Any ideas, anyone?
Video posted for reference
All right I did some searching and found the AIO tool in another thread. I'll post a link below it's a great tool I made me realize that I was trying to install the wrong version of TWRP, and now it's installed and working properly

Hey everyone, I'm currently on B29, non-rooted and locked bootloader.
I would like to root and make my up to stock 7.1.1. The issue I'm having, is that there is an absolute ton of conflicting info and ways to do things that I'm just not sure at all how to proceed.
What I've tried so far was starting with this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/how-to/newbies-guide-to-unlocking-rooting-axon-t3496234. But the tool from step three wouldn't download and the hosting site threw a ton of popups and redirects at me (yes, I have uBlock).
Then continuing through that same thread I found this tool https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/development/axon7tool-flash-backup-boot-recovery-t3514254 that is apparently safer, but I have no idea how to use it.
Then I started hearing about this EDL mode stuff https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/development/edl-emergency-dl-mode-twrp-unlock-t3553514 which I attempted to do when I tried the Axon7Toolkit yesterday, but my phone just wouldn't go into EDL mode (or I just had no idea how to tell if it was or not) and the MiFlash thing didn't do anything.
So my real questions are:
1: Which version of TWRP and SuperSU do I need?
2: How do I unlock the bootloader?
3: What steps should I take so that I eventually end up rooted on stock 7.1.1 (currently still on B29)?
Thanks!
umm shouldn't this go on questions and answers?
Just one thing: You mostly can't tell if your phone is in EDL mode. Some axons will turn the notif light red, some will not do s**t, like mine. Just do whatever the guide says. On A2017G you use "adb reboot edl" and the phone just goes into EDL mode. After that you have to use axon7tool but I'm not sure if it works for nougat...
If the phone is not on EDL mode then the worst thing that can happen is that you get an error. Axon7tool doesn't do anything unless the phone is on EDL, so you pretty much can't mess up

Sorry, I thought it would go here because it was a question about the guides. I'm not sure if a mod would move this but I don't think I should repost the same question in another section?
But yeah, about the EDL, I have the U and I ran "adb reboot edl" but MiFlash didn't see anything and it wasn't showing up when I did "adb devices" so I wasn't sure what was going on. Do you have any guides or anything you'd recommend?

No access with adb or fastboot in edl mode. It' strictly for use with low level tools like miflash. Your environment will make the difference. I couldn't get miflash on my main pc (win8/x64) to see the device. Likely an issue of drivers even through the proper driver is installed, and phone is showing up properly in device mgr. I used a spare pc with a relatively fresh win10/x64 install. Miflash saw the phone right away.
Also, for edl mode, my u model will just flash the led once then go blank.
To achieve your goal, easiest to probably just unlock the bootloader with the B29, then mess around with updating to latest.

Okay thanks, I'll give it a go again. Would you be able to clarify which version of TWRP I should use? I'm thinking 3.0.2-0 but I've seen other guides mention different versions and other people say the wrong version is going to be a massive headache.
For the initial unlocking, you'll have to use the signed twrp. I don't recall the exact version, but whatever is included in the unlock thread. Once unlocked, then you can flash the latest 3.1.something.

Okay thanks. As for the rest, am I correct in my understanding that I need to:
First: Use Axon7tool to flash TWRP https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/development/axon7tool-flash-backup-boot-recovery-t3514254
Second: Unlock bootloader
Third: flash the official 7.1.1
Hmm you could use a7tool to flash TWRP, then install the twrp app and upgrade to 3.1 or whatever, and then get to nougat after some backups. I'm not sure but I think tenfar's twrp FUBAR'd some partitions when you tried to backup
Okay thanks. I think I'll give it a rest for today, I've been scouring threads since yesterday trying to get a clear picture of what to do. I think I'll spend the week researching further and give it a go next weekend.
I just miss having AdAway and CF Lumen installed on my phone. And I really want to give Substratum a try.
Thanks for all the tips and info!
Hang in there. You are on the right track. The edl thing can take a few attempts to get recognized.
Did you try the toolkit? Same as using miflash but he has direct downloads to all the necessary drivers and tools along with instructions.

There are people who are reporting that the drivers that I provide in the toolkit do not work and therefore MiFlash fails to flash packages. I am going to use new drivers in the next version(the drivers that come with the stock ROM) and then the OP should test it.
If you have to use axon7tool then you might find this useful

But I think that the US version has a different way to root and stuff, so i wouldn't be able to help...

Can you try these drivers: http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/MOBILES/Others/ZTE-Handset-USB-Driver-52066111.shtml
Then test the option again and see if MiFlash will detect your device? Thank you.
Just make sure after you install them you go to C:\Windows and delete adb.exe and AdbWinApi.dll otherwise there will be two conflicting adb versions which will cause the toolkit to indefinitely hang when checking adb connectivity.

@CookedBooks I have great news for you: Thanks to one of my testers I have fixed the MiFlash issue. The problem was not with the drivers, but with MiFlash itself. So the solution was an EARLIER VERSION of MiFlash!! The next version of the toolkit will utilize the earlier version so I should no longer have to deal with this issue! Huzzahh!

I used the toolkit to flash b15 full with miflash and it worked fine, however I already had miflash installed.
I have (attempted)root, and while I have root access when I boot up, I have to boot through fastboot. I tried the verity file published on a few threads, as well as RSD(for Linux, if that makes a difference) and I get no service. Twrp can't be reflashed due to the bootloader message in fastboot saying the boot IMG is corrupted. Anything helps at this point.
Running RR rom as of now, lineage was no different.

Your not going to get a signal with Boost or any other CDMA carrier with custom ROMs right now. They work for GSM models but need to be fixed for CDMA.

If you don't already have it, the Boost stock firmware is here: https://firmware.center/firmware/Motorola/Moto E4/Stock/
Download this one:
SPERRY_SPRINT_7.1.1_NCQ26.69-48_cid50_subsidy-DEFAULT_regulatory-DEFAULT_CFC.xml.zip
1.6 GiB
If you can't get RSDlite to recognize your device, you'll have to use adb/fastboot to flash the firmware manually piece by piece.

RSD recognized device fine, but when I flashed it, nothing changed.
Edit: I did try to use fastboot last night to flash the contained boot.img as well as the recovery.img no luck with those either. Would I need to erase files before flashing first?
Edit2: I very well may have downloaded an incorrect zip from the list last time. I'm going to get the one you mentioned and when I get home from family's house tonight I'll give it a go and holler.

I'm not sure what your problem could be other than not having the correct firmware. I haven't used RSD with this device (maybe someone who has will chime in) because it wouldn't recognize it so I've just been flashing it with fastboot on Windows with a script to flash everything automatically, so it's just as easy. It's the only time I really ever use Windows. You shouldn't need to erase anything before flashing. I've never had to. Be careful using the erase command, I've seen users screw up partitions using it and ending up with a brick. I only use it erase modem st1 and st2 and to wipe data.
Sent from my Moto E (4) using XDA Labs
I only have Linux ATM. My machine had XP on it till it crashed setting up eclipse lol rsd communicates with the device fine, so I'm assuming it's the firmware. Like I said I'm at family's for the holiday, but I'll keep you posted when I get home.

Pretty sure no verity zip or magisk takes care of that (though you get n/a in the corner)
I'll try again tonight when I get back home.
Leave twrp as read only, then flash verity, then su. Is that correct?

Alright, so I got an error message about a bad key when I tried flashing twrp. I booted into twrp from fastboot via command line, flashed verity, flashed su "successfully" just waiting on partition details to be updated....
But it feels like it's been a good ten minutes of nothing happening. I ran the following from desktop:
adb shell whoami
Return was:

But I'm still waiting for it to update the partition details...

Ok so I tried to root this and everything went well up ubtil I flashed Team win. When i try to open it, the program starts HOWEVER something is up with the touch screen. Im unable to click anything the only power button works. I tried flashing versions 3.0.0, 3.0.1, 3.0.2, 3.0.3. No luck! Is the problem they are old versions? Should i use 3.1.1 which was designed for Nougat supposedly?
Any advice this is my first attempt in to rooting android devices. Forgive me if any of my lingo is incorrect.

Are you trying to root the aristo or aristo 2?
Aristo 2. Sorry, kind of diving in head first with this whole process. If im doing something obviously wrong go easy on me lol.
---------- Post added at 11:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:25 PM ----------
Aristo 2
Hmm and you flashed the twrp that was for the aristo right?
Well the TWRP files i used were on *How To* forums posts and youtube videos for the original LG Aristo. Everything was going fine but the touch screen while in TWRP does not work. Maybe there os a different version I can try? Do any of you guys have any ideas, my understanding though is that TWRP has to be created for a specific device once released. Is thats whats going wrong?
you unlocked the bootloader and flashed the aristo 1 recovery thats what you did so far right?
The aristo 1 recovery will not work at all.
The screens are of the same build, but different composition.
That's why I wanted to test this myself before posting further on the subject.
I can risk my phone, most of you cant.
I figured as much. Thanks for the info! Just got mine today. Glad the aristo's battery works in the aristo2 as i bought a couple batteries for it. I still do like the aristo though it feels a bit better in my hand.
Well luckily It seems i have not screwed up my phone. Have reset and wiped it multiple times which was annoying, but seems to be ok. It sucks because it looks like the touch screen alone is whats screwing me over. If only i had a way around it. Then again im sure you guys have a better idea of whats going on. Guess ill just be patient until more is posted on subject.
We need a new recovery for this anyway. Since the aristo 2 isn't gonna have multiple versions (besides the Korean base model the 2 is built after), we should be able to build just one recovery using the model number as it's target, we can make it borderline universal if a new version were to pop up.
I decided against going the metro route, buying mine in bulk. So I'll have one to smash when this is all over.
The TWRP method works the same as the Aristo, and the TWRP recovery IS compatible. However the touch screen does not function.. Is there a way to get it to work?
@ninjasinabag @teknoweanie @tribal1209 Hey guys, spent a few hours figuring out how to root. Pretty Simple
1) Enable Developer Options, USB Debugging & OEM Unlock
2) Reboot to Fastboot Mode (Using ADB via PC type: adb reboot bootloader)
3) Add root_boot.img into your adb folder
4) In ADB type: fastboot flash boot root_boot.img

Yes, it is. What I did was use LG firmware extractor and extracted the boot image, then I proceeded to patch the boot image with magisk manager. Enabling OEM unlock allows me to flash the boot image with the newly-created custom one. Remember though, you should create a backup of your device because enabling OEM unlock will completely erase everything.

Hi there. I am a a bit of a root-moron and have bricked my brand new Oneplus 6T while rooting it. Now I am stuck in a bootloop that ONLY cycles through the fastboot.
I can no longer enter into recovery mode from fastboot.
I can not use the MSM Download tool because the phone will not go into MSM Mode. Whenever I connect to the USB the phone automatically “wakes up” and immediately goes into fastboot.
When I hold the power button + volume up it just cycles through all the fastboot options and when it does eventually power down / screen goes black, it immediately powers back up and does the exact same thing.
So I simply cant get into MSM mode or recovery mode. I don’t know what to do and fear that the phone may be totally f#cked.
I welcome assistance from anyone here who actually knows what they are doing vs me who knows close to nothing. Help please!

Just want to let you now that I fixed it using the Stock Fastboot tool posted here

I just did exactly as instructed; my phone was already stuck in fastboot so I plugged to my PC and ran the flash-all.bat file. I really didn't think it would work because the phone did not seem to respond or do anything. I went to the toilet, came back and it was reset to factory!!!! Amazing.
Thank you so much @mauronofrio for posting this amazing tool. You saved my bricked phone! I sent you a donation for your assistance. Thanks again.
Just for future reference, as long as you can get this phone into fastboot, you should be fine. For now that's where all the flashing happens until we get a custom recovery.
But I'm glad to hear you fixed it lol
Can I just point out how bad*** of a "newb" the OP is. Dude signs up to XDA, literally makes his account name "OP6TNewb" then proceeds to give zero f**** and immediately jumps into flashing his brand new phone (as we all did once!). THEN he fixes the issue on his own using a tool he found by SEARCHING and THEN HE DONATED TO THE DEV WHO CREATED THE TOOL!!!!!
Kudos to you @OP6TNewb. All "newbs" should aspire to be like you.

Thank you for the kind words. Donating was an easy choice because the tool saved me $650. If a guy in my situation doesn't stand up and donate to rewards you guys then who will???
Thanks again to @mauronofrio for the amazing tool and thank you to this community for allowing newbs like me to somewhat safely explore the world of android rooting & modifications.

Out of mere curiosity, what exactly did you do to cause the device to go into bootloop anyhow?

They probably have gone off to brag to their friends about what happened. Lol
I, too, am curious about what he did. It's been so long since I first began tinkering, but certainly remember some times I goofed.

Hi Pain & Panic.
I was attempting to root my device following the instructions here https://www.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6t-unlock-bootloader-root/ by Adam Conway.
I was successful up to flashing the twrp img file but I made the error of flashing the wrong zip file. (blu_spark_r54-oos-pie_op6-6t_12869fe.zip ). This is bc when you follow the link to the twrp download page in Adam's instructions, the actual twrp zip file you need as per the instructions is the 10th file down the list and I didn't realize that this was important vs using the 1st zip file on the page which is the one I used. I assumed that the other files were older versions and the 1st was the most recent update that I should use. For a newb like me, this was VERY confusing.
Once I flashed the zip and rebooted to system, I got stuck in the fastboot bootloop.
While I am not 100% sure that this is what caused the problem, and maybe you will tell me that the zip file shouldn't have made a difference, but these are the steps I took.
FYI - after restoring my device using @mauronofrio's tool, I have successfully rooted my phone by following Adam Conway's steps and using the EXACT files he screenshots on the tutorial. So after a painful but educational experience, I rooted my device. Thanks again!

I forgot to mention one thing which may also be the reason. Initially, before using Adam Conways instructions, I started with the steps on High on Android (Max Lee) for the OP6 but on their download page, I mistakenly downloaded the twrp zip for the 5T and I flashed it. This initially cause the device to brick but I got it back into fastboot and into recovery and thats when I flashed the OTHER twrp file above. After I did this, I could no longer get into recover and was stuck in fastboot only.
So you can see that I made multiple errrors and I am not sure which one lead to what. Thank goodness OnePlus is friendly to rooting so I could save the phone!

Ah, I see. Looks like you flashed a kernel zip instead.
Im not a noob, but have been so out of practice with the latest Android ROMS and flashing and the changes in the partition arrangements. I managed to soft brick my phone as well and this post totally saved the day! Mauronofrio totally deserves a donation and I also gave one.
Thanks XDA! This place has saved me many times and helped me get the most of all my Android devices!
Hey guys. i am also no noob in flashing/rooting my devices.
Don thishundres of times.
Today my OP6T has shown an Magisk update (before it was 21.4 + Magisk Manager) and now it showed the popup to update -> done and error "bad image format" (i think for the kernel). Rebooted and now i am stuck in the same fastboot bootloop.
Tried to boot up TWRP with "fastboot boot tmrp.img" sadly it doesnt boot.
Any hints how i can recover my phone without wiping everything?
maybe @mauronofrio has an idea?
thx a lot
Other users facing the same issue with magisk 22, see here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...oot-roms-for-oneplus-6t.3862516/post-84553217
My OP6T had Ubuntu Touch (equivalent to Android 9) installed on it. When it broke, I tried to flash TWRP (version 3.3.1) to clear and reinstall Ubuntu Touch. For some reason it wouldn't boot, so I foolishly decided to flash TWRP onto every single partition. This only succeeded in breaking recovery mode. Following some advice I used the 6T MsmDownloadTool v4.0.58 (OOS v9.0.11), which fixed recovery mode, but not Android - it just showed the booting animation in a infinite loop (bootloop).
I've attached an image I found online showing the screen: bootloop
The issue is that I cannot flash in fastboot mode as the bootloader was relocked by MsmDownloadTool, *and* I cannot get into Android to enable OEM mode/USB debugging. I seem to have encountered a paradox where fastboot mode requires the permissions to be enabled in Android, but I can't boot to Android to enable those permissions, nor can I flash anything else to fix Android.
Is this possible to solve?

You can try booting with the twrp.img. "fastboot boot name.img" using that ADB command. If that does not work the only other option is to completely retore your phone using msmdownload tool. This method will also depend on whether you have the international version or the T-Mobile version as there are different approaches depending on the type of phone. Read and study carefully how to proceed. If the msm tool does not work I'm pretty damn sure there are no other options.

He can't boot into anything with bootloader locked. This is why msm tool sucks and people should stop recommending it for any little problem.
Only option now is to use msm tool again and hopefully get something working
Even with the bootloader locked you still should be able to boot the recocery image.
I have the 6T and 7T Pro. When I messed up my 6T my only hope was the msmdownloadtool. But make sure it's the right one.
When I had to use the msm download tool it did lock the bootloader. But I was able to unloack it again from the ADB command prompt at the bootloader screen by typing fastboot oem unlock. But this can only be done if it is set in developer options.
I spent alot of time trying to figure it out but later found outthat I was using the wrong msm tool.
Good luck. I hope you get it and running again because the 6T is still a very good phone.

Are there more suitable tools for fixing a broken recovery mode? It did successfully do that.

Thank you! And yes, I tried that command but it is probably unset in the developer options (which I cannot reach, as Android isn't working anymore). I guess I'm using the incorrect version - how do you identify the correct one? I think I've used both the T-Mobile one and the other. I don't think the phone is T-Mobile, but I'm not sure how to identify whether it is or not.
It is very easy to convert a t-mobile variant to the international version. If you bought the phone used you would not know. One tell tale sign could be if you sim card holder supports either one or 2 sims. But that's not a sure way either because you can buy a replacement sim card holder. The fastet was would be to look up the IMEI # and see what variant of the 6 you have.
As for the msm tool you would needd a modified version of that tool. You first use it to downgrade to Android 9. Then you have to upgrade that verion of android 9 to a slightly higher version before you are able to fully upgrade feely to 10 than 11 if you wanted.
If you have the international version pretty much and version of the msm tool would work but a modified version would be best.
However, the first step is to find out which variant you have.
When you used the msmdownload tool which version did you use, and did it finish the job ?
If you have the t-mobile vesion there is a thread on here that gives you step by step instructions to convert from t-mobile to international along with the links to download the software. And even the modified version will know what variant you have simply by not working.
If you are able to get into the bootloader than you have a great chance of fixing your phone. Your phone is bootlooping so that tells me you can access the bootloader screen.
When I bricked mine I thought it was gone forever, I spent several days working on it but I was able to restore it. But I would never use the ubuntu rom on any phone that I care for.
When you are at this level it is very important you proceed with caution and don't just start flashing anything you can find. It will nake matters much worse.

No. Not without an unlocked bootloader. But booting into twrp would give you the ability to flash a ROM tho.

That's what I meant. Flash a ROM from twrp. Ok so if that works this guy can fix everything from there. Gonna be a hassle tho. Instead of rebooting to recovery I think you would have to shut off phone and fastboot boot back into twrp to change slots right?
Somehow I feel like that won't work but I'm not locking my bootloader to test it

I used a few - both T-Mobile and not. They all succeeded with (seemingly) no error, but didn't fix the bootloop.

Yup, fastboot and recovery mode work fine. The bootloader is locked though, else installing TWRP, etc. would be easy.

As far as I can tell there's no way to flash TWRP without unlocking the bootloader. And there doesn't seem to be any way to do that without getting into Android. And I can't get into Android...
Someone else suggested using this tool (https://github.com/bkerler/edl) as a last-ditch attempt. I'm going to give it a try and hope for the best!
Thank you both for your suggestions.
