Who's waiting on the other group of devs before they root?

I'm not too ready to go nuke all of my apps and data without being able to back them up properly. Hopefully the other group will have a method that doesn't involve completely flashing a new image so I can use Titanium Backup before flashing any custom ROMs.

on every other phone, when gaining root access it requires a hard reset. better to root in the beginning.

Really? I'm pretty sure I didn't have to factory-reset to root my Hero. I've also had my EVO for over a week, so everything is already installed and organized.

If i understand this, rooting does not require any flashing, so you can root , install titanium back up, and then when a custom rom is ready you can flash it.

I will check the grack one out, but I am 80% sure I am going with the one from awesome guys here.

The other group of devs are using a exploit in sprint\htc software. They are going to release the info on the exploit to sprint\htc in 1 week after release. So say goodbye to your other root. I am pretty sure toast root is from a rom thats for engineering purposes. So the root should stay working. Don't quote me on this but I am pretty sure this is correct info.

they still dont have "sticky root" or the ability to flash custom roms and such. ur gonna need to use my method for that until we figure out nand protection and how to exploit it. i think they are only releasing their root method as a "proof of concept" or t show how easy it was to gain root perms on the stock build. it will most likely not be the replacement for my method. i talk with them a bit and its just in hopes that both methods together could possible bring a nand exploit to life.

At this point I am waiting as I don't see any reason to root. I can't use titanium backup and frankly don't care about themes or additional roms. OOTB is fast as hell.
Once full system access is achieved, or a fully functional Froyo ROM is available, then I will root.
Just my observation, but I alway ERR on the side of caution.

The first thing you do is flash an image to your phone that overwrites your current ROM.

I was hoping that I'd get the ability to access recovery and flash new ROMs with theirs, so then I could just flash a custom ROM with normal root anyways. According to toast, this doesn't seem to be the case...

Really? I thought sticky-root was one of the items on their checklist to accomplish before release.
Does anyone happen to know if I can backup apps with a non-root required app then restore them and use Titanium Backup's Market Doctor to fix their Market entries? The lack of backing up Market links is the only reason I don't use other backup apps.

just dont flash or except any updates from sprint. those could possibly ruin ur chances of root ever.

Most custom roms will remove the OTA update feature. Only stock roms will have this feature. If you are on a stock rom and update is available you can decline it also.

Very wise advice. I have HTC updates turned off. Not sure if there is any place to disable Sprint updates.

Also on ANY piece of electronics you have to give your consent for any update to be applied, so even with the stock ROM you can decline updates.

Unless you are rooted you will continue to get that notification, its quite annoying.

[Q] Full backup of Acer Iconia A500

Please dear God help me out with this, I am so lost! So I bought an Acer A500 tab, and I want to root it. But before that! I want to save the current firmware and the CWM due to me having a two year warranty on the device, and I'm a afraid if I were to return the device with issues clearly it'll void the warranty since I've rooted the device. So please can anybody help me out? I am in huge need of help!

To help you I need first some information about your tab. First,what android version is installed on your tab? The best backup will be with CWM but then you need root.
Of course you could connect your tab to the PC via USB and copy everything to your HDD. But I think here you need root as well to be able to see the system folders... .

A paradox.
You can't save your current rom in it's native form unless you root. And you can't save it, unless you install a custom recovery. And even then, you're saving a modified OS that if you restore, will be modified. So a paradox.
So if you want to root, and install roms, you'll just have to suck it up like everybody else
Fortunately, lots of methods to revert back to stock in case needed.
So, you either take the plunge, or stay stock.

Not only that but most Big Box stores dont have a clue and rarely look at it anyway ,unless you tell them its something you did (which would void the warranty) . But for me personally I void warranty within a few hours on everything I get , if its electronic they always take it back , I wouldnt worry about it , run a bunch of stress tests for a couple days if the components are sound ,it will complete them no problem , then root away and have fun!

Thank you all for your replies! I can honestly say, I can happily root my device without a worry now. But I have a couple of things I'd like to ask, for one. What is a cpu ID? Also say for example I rooted my device and want to revert back to the original OS is that possible or not? Here is my current information.

That's my current information. IF anybody of you guys call tell me I would like to root my device but with ICS not with Honeycomb since at the moment that's what I currently have. Also I have 2 year warranty.

First, this is an excellent post about CPUIDs, why you need them, and how to get them posted by dibb_nz ... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25429111#post25429111 this will really give some direction on why it's important and how you can get it.
If you want to root an ICS rom I recommend reading this post from Civato on how to upgrade your bootloader to v6: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622425 I recommend the Automated Flashing tools for ease, but the manual version is good if you want to know more about what you're doing on the tablet.
Then pick a ROM, I personally use Flexreaper Extreme, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22964651&postcount=1 but there are several out there to choose from, I recommend putting several on your MicroSD card before you start any portion of the process and that way you have several to choose from, test between them, and don't "over customize" until you make your decision.
Finally, I'll remind to you, as many others will do, BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP!

You freaking rock bro! I have a question, since I already have Honeycomb on my Android by default, would I need to root first before I update it to the newer version of the ICS? OR would I just have to manually update it first and then begin the process of rooting the device? I as well admire Flexreaper Extreme. I also noticed there are special mods for the device to change the skin etc...Would you know where I can get the tutorial on that? I know I'm jumping too much, but I'm too darn excited to do this. Hahaha.

You should be able to start the process by going through the steps in Civato's post on how to change your Bootloader, make sure you have a ROM on the MicroSD before doing this, and then follow the steps to install the ROM you choose.

Heyyy I finally rooted my iconia! XD Thank you so much for the help! I appreciate it! One thing now....after I booted my device it's stuck on the Acer logo.... :X any solutions?? Sorry again for the trouble!

Sounds like it didn't install cleanly. Double check the checksum, try redownload, wipe everything and reinstall. If that doesn't work make sure that your bootloader and Rom match.

Hi! Thanks for your reply I have successfully rooted my device after hours of research I had to reinstall everything from scratch, unfortunately my build for my tab isn't the same as the the build I had it when I bought it, oh well...So now I have HC 3.0.1
So now I want to flash the device, is that possible? I want to get that ICS look without updating it to the ICS. I was wondering what would you advice me to do? haha, I know I'm asking way too many questions in this single form, I have an excuse for that I'm a noob, hahaha. But seriously your help is very much appreciated!

I will suggest rooting your HC ROM first, then install recovery for example via acer recovery installer. Make a backup then!
After that you can use AFTEROTA to upgrade the bootliader and recovery. When finished install an ICS ROM of your choice. With the help from AFTEROTA you can all ways go back to stock HC version.

I thought I'd jump in to make a suggestion before you get filleted like a fish. Please see this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2145848. It will tell you EVERYTHING you need to know. Read, re-read if necessary; trust me, it's all in there. It's VERY well written with a tremendous amount of time spent to help all of us out.

I think the thread linked above should answer your question pretty well. Also, in future please search before posting and post questions in the Q&A forum.

however, to answer the question simply, if you want to update to stock ota after rooting, you will need to reflash stock recovery, then you can either wait for the notification to update or you can download the signed ota zip and sideload it with stock recovery. you do not need to worry about actually being rooted....this does not affect whether you can update or not. what does affect it, though, is the recovery you have installed. and in order to root, you needed to install a custom recovery. This must be revered to stock prior to updating.

Question on stock root

I got my S4 on release day and I have been really reluctant to root because I am happy with the way the phone is. But now I am tempted to root for 2 reasons. I want to be able to use every app in the multi window view and to be able to move stuff to the SD card.
So my question is....If i just root my phone but dont put and rom or recovery on it what would I need to do if Android or Samsung released an update? The update would not work if I was rooted correct? Can someone link me on the process I would need to do to be able to install such an update?

I believe there are root method which allows OTAs but you ll loose the root and you might need to re root again. If the root doesnt support OTAs then you will have to flahs stock firmware then update then root again.

Ok so for example if I followed QB Kings video in the Android Development Forum on rooting my S4 do you know if that root would allow for OTA's? I going back in forth in my head on if I should root or not. On one hand I would want these extra features I mentioned but on the other hand is it worth the hassle of dealing with the OTA update process.

Based on my limited knowledge, it is possible that if you take OTA, you may not be able to root again (if the OTA patches that root exploit). Hopefully the awesome Devs on here will be able to find another exploit, but it is possible that you may not be able to re-root.

Sorry no idea about that method. You should ask in that thread you might will get proper info. And BTW OTA for now are provided fast but as everybody knows it takes a while for Samsung to roll out important OTAs so you might as well root than sit hoping for OTA while missing all the modding action.

Very good point in not waiting around for an OTA...they do take long as hell to push out....and I will ask in the QB King thread to see how OTAs work with that root process...Thanks so much

I want to root to use V4A and some root apps but I have a question.
Shall I root now or wait for 4.4 and then root?
Because when I root now I need to do alot of things to be able to update to 4.4, right?

you can root it now,its not that hectic or hard to go back to stock..

You don't necessarily need to do a lot of things to un-root after you root. Are you familiar with flashing factory images? Right when 4.4 comes out, Google should release the 4.4 factory image for the Nexus 4. You should be able to grab the images and flash them the same day they announce 4.4, whereas if you want to grab the OTA update for 4.4 (which you might have trouble grabbing if you're rooted), you might have to wait a week or so. Here are some helpful links:

I would recommend getting comfortable with adb and fastboot before flashing, well, anything. I know in the perfect world that would be possible, but most people want root and just want it done without fully understanding what's going on. If you follow the above guides line for line, you should be ok. Another helpful tip: no matter what, as long as you can get into the bootloader, your phone is not bricked and can fully be fixed.
All of that said, if you can wait, then I'd say wait. The announcement should be within the next few weeks.

Luckly, im pretty handy with adb/rooting and stuff like that, but I still have a question though.
If I root now and remain stock(no custom rom and kernel) will unrooting and flashing stock recovery trough ADB make me able to install OTA update of 4.4 without wipe?

As far as I've known, a rooted Android phone can safely receive an update as long as you don't change things like the kernel, custom rom, etc). The only thing that should happen is that you'll be unrooted once you update your phone but don't quote me on it. HOPEFULLY SOMEONE WITH MORE KNOWLEDGE WILL CHIME IN AND CONFIRM WHAT I SAID

to update to 4.4 after having root is a non problem.. you either will have to flash a prerooted rom, or youll youll take the ota update, then reflash a custom recovery and the su binaries. both of which takes just a few minutes.
