Hello everyone, I have found several ways to root my OP8Pro but all of them include unlocking the bootloader which forces you to wipe the device. Is it possible to obtain root without having to wipe?
On android 11 stable version
I don't think there's any way of unlocking bootloader without wiping.
Just do a Google backup of the device
Unlock bootloader
Restore from backup in setup process
Not possible since unlocking the bootloader will wipe all data...

How about thinking to have a backup first and then unlocking your bootloader. it should solve your problem.
it only takes a bit of your time to backup, that's all

Yeah, just curious as to whether there is any limitation to it or just people dont care enough to do it
Because unlocking bootloader is always equals to wipe data. No other ways to save your data beside backup it first.

Hello,
1) Is there any way to root without losing all of your data? I'm not talking about basic things that Google backs up for you.
2) Is there any way to back up your apps and data without having root?
Thank you
1) If your bootloader is still locked, Nope.
2) Need root access to do full backups.

And the catch is the only way to unlock the bootloader is through a process by which you lose all of your user data, correct?
1. If your boot loader is still locked, then you have to do a full wipe.
2. If you use the Nexus Root Toolkit 1.5, you can create a backup of your apps, data and media, then restore it after root. Worked for me.

try this thread. you can back up your apps with adb without root or unlocking

Hello guys,
my TN7 is nagging me to upgrade from 4.2.2 to 4.3 via OTA. I've read that with the upgrade the bootloader will be locked and if I tried to root afterwards a full wipe will be neccessary to unlock the bootloader.
So here's my question: if I root first and upgrade then will root access persist or do I have to suffer a full reset anyway? What would you suggest?
Any hints are appreciated!

I have not rooted my device but after you upgrade to 4.3, within 5-10 minutes it will ask you again to upgrade to 4.4.2. I think you should consider this also before rooting. ( I am having 4.4.2. )
What is the advantage of rooting TN7?

All my Android devices are rooted, because in general I don't like the idea that there is a lot of potential hidden from the customer. For example if you want to make Nandroid backups you need root access. And I'm using Nandroids excessively
Other apps like Tasker need root access to use their full potential.
So the question remains: will root stick through the upgrade(s) or not? And if it doesn't, what can I do make it persist?
no, you will need to root after each update. So you might as well do the updates, then the root. many here are wishing they would have just stayed on 4.3 and not rooted (IMHO) The only thing I like about KK is the gamepad mapper.
I did the two updates (4.3 and then 4.4.2) then I unlocked the boot loader and rooted using the tool as it supports the 4.4.3 update.
Was plain sailing and no problems.
Phil
Thanks guys, so I'm going to root on current version to backup all apps and settings. Then I can do both updates and unlock the boot loader without worrying about data loss.
I'll give feedback how it went
So, I promised to report back. Coming from Android 4.2.2 I did the following:
Root like described in here:
HTML:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47810386&postcount=1
I used the Chinese method, but please be aware that this way there is strange software installed on your device.
Then I grabbed Titanium Backup Pro and created a backup of all my installed apps. Those backups and important data from internal storage were pushed to a remote FTP server, because I read that unlocking the boot loader also wipes sdcard0.
Next step is installing all three OTA updates. Please be patient, because that this (especially the update to 4.4.2) may take some time.
Unlock boot loader. CAUTION: ALL DATA WILL BE LOST! Follow the instructions of Super Tool:
HTML:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2627654
Flash ClockworkMod Recovery with Super Tool or manually via fastboot. I recommend Super Tool, because it's very handy to use.
Boot to CWM and flash SuperSU.zip by Chainfire and you should be good to go. Now you can reinstall Titanium Backup and restore your previously backed up apps and data from your remote location!
I hope this could come in handy for someone!

:good: GREAT!!!! you finally rooted your device!!! I just want to ask you, is it possible to flash "SuperSU.zip" from "STOCK recovery" after unlocking the bootloader? i.e
1) Unlock bootloader 2) Flash SuperSU.zip from stock recovery ; thats all, now your are rooted. ???
...
...
I am going to root , but after at least 3-4 month's of usage. In the past I had rooted LG O1, CUBE U9GT4, iBall Andi4.3a. I also love taking BKPs with TB, very useful for game progress.
Have you tried "viper4android audio mod" and "GLTools"(for maximizing graphics performance for any app)?

Nope, unfortunately it won't work this way, because the stock recovery system looks for a special signature which is not present in the zip file.

Personally I'd do it as soon as possible, because you will lose all your saved data. So the earlier you root, the less you have to restore
I wanted to install some root exclusive apps on my moto x to improve battery life and get most out of my style
But Iike my current rom and just wanted to only be able to install apps which require root
So, is it possible to only root the device without unlocking bootloader especially on MARSHMALLOW because most tutorials i able to find was lollipop
and also if I root my device ,does all my data and apps will be deleted?
please suggest me some tips regarding this issue and and any help is WELCOME:good:
P.S- my only experience with root is on samsung galaxy tab 2 on 4.4.2
- also please suggest any good backup application just in case
THANKYOU
Without unlocking bootloader I don't think anything will work since the rooting apps use system vulnerabilities till KitKat.
Unlocking bootloader do wipe all your data so u should backup important data before opening bootloader.
Rooting doesn't wipe your data, but for rooting u will need to unlock bootloader and it will wipe data so your data will be gone anyway.
U can backup through helium http://gs5.wonderhowto.com/how-to/back-up-your-android-apps-their-data-without-root-0158767/

Just got my phone and I need to wait on rooting. Can I take the January OTA updates and still root later?
Yes. If you plan to root later, unlock the bootloader first before you set everything up. Unlocking the bootloader will force a wipe of all data. Rooting will not, if the bootloader is already unlocked.

If I'm reading this right, I need to unlock the bootloader just to get root? Does that also mean it would take a data wipe to un-root?

Unlocking does not provide root access, but it is a requirement for gaining root. If you wait to unlock your bootloader and set all your apps and settings on your phone, it will all be lost when you decide to root because the bootloader must be unlocked to root.
Therefore it is best to unlock first if you have the intention of rooting later to save your data and settings.

To get root access you need to install SuperSU, to install SuperSU you need TWRP recovery, to install TWRP recovery you need an unlocked bootloader. Unlocking the bootloader wipes all userdata from the device. The best way to do it is like this:
1. Unlock your bootloader.
2. Flash the factory images for the latest build to make sure you're completely up to date.
3. Install TWRP.
4. Make a nandroid backup with TWRP.
5. Install SuperSU to get root.
6. Install whatever root mods/apps you want.
Read my detailed guide:

I see thank you. This is different from any other phone I've been on where root is found before unlock, if unlock is ever found

That's the beauty of owning a Nexus, they're meant to be tinkered with so it's all very easy. No hacks or exploits required.
I'm digging through the guides and Q&A and whatnot but I just don't seem to be finding exactly what it is I'm looking for. Can someone point me to a guide that will work in rooting an Axon 7 A2017U 0B32. I am not interesting in unlocking the bootloader but only desire to install AdAway. I found 1 thread that seems to explain it but there is no recent links to files for the new B32 update and was hoping their may be a different method that makes that irrelevant.
Thanks
Unlock then root.

And by all means, DO NOT RELOCK (unless the phone is COMPLETELY stock, i.e. stock recovery, stock system without having been tampered with)

ok so you do have to unlock the bootloader regardless then? Whats a good guide on here thats sure to work with B32 or maybe a guide that explains how to properly use that Axon TookKit, I looked at the sticky for it but its better described for listing features.
Well I ended up getting it to work with the Toolkit by:
1. Unlocking Device
2. Installing Drivers
3. Flash TWRP
4. Unlock Device
Now my question is in reference to the APP+DATA Backup I took with the ToolKit, If I restore that backup is the Root preserved with just my APPS and Data including Call logs, Contacts, SMS etc restored? Or does that restore set my phone to exactly how it was before the root (Loosing the root)?

The only way you'll lose root that way is if you restore a system backup
