Android 11 Question - OnePlus 8 Pro Questions & Answers

Hello guys I'm on Android 10 is it worth updating to Android 11 I'm Rooted and only use Adaway.
What are the Steps to update without bringing the The Phone Thanks Guy's

I want to as well but not sure if this will wipe data. I would assume this would be the process
1. Uninstall Magisk
2. Download and install Oxygen 11
3. Open Magisk Manager and patch the Boot.img then copy that to your PC
4. Reboot to recovery and install the patched boot.img
5. Open Magisk Manager and install Magisk
I can't stand installing all my apps and having to set everything up again so if this resets my data I'll hold off.

Having a backup is always sound advice, but I didn't need it. What I did:
Prep:
* make sure Magisk is >=21.0
* charge phone
Go:
* use Oxygen Updater to download and install full update (not incremental) - DO NOT REBOOT HERE
* in Magisk Manager, Install -> Install to Inactive Slot (After OTA)
* now reboot

I have a thread here
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-8-pro/how-to/root-uk-eu-patched-magisk-boot-img-t4175033
If you're already on Android 10 then your in a good state to do this.
It's based on the EU/ UK version of the phone but all information is in there to get you updated.
No need to lose anything, I'm running 11 with adaway and it's perfectly fine.
I didn't lose my data either, only if you were coming from a beta, which if you're on 10 then your not.
Be sure to read the whole OP before committing, also some posts from others may be useful, have a look..
PS: I can't update the OP anymore (XDA issue) only thing I'd add us to use the magisk manager from here to upgrade and reroot the system.

I am rooted, but not happy with my current state

Hey everyone,
I`m running LineageOS on my phone and am rooted using SuperSU which seems to work, according to Rootchecker and the feww apps I use, which make use of root privileges.
But I`m not entirely happy with my current situation, since it seems that more and more apps don`t tend to work with my rooted phone. So what are my ways out of this?
Can I easily unroot my phone, while keeping LineageOS?
Is there a working alternative to SuperSU, which would enable me to stay rooted on LineageOS without reflashing the OS and use Banking-Apps?
I`ve heard of Magisk, but I am unsure of how to switch over from my current state and I`am not sure whether or not it would solve my problems
Thanks for any help in advance!!
Magisk
You just have to go to SuperSU, then Full Unroot, then download Magisk 13.3 and flash it from TWRP. After that you should have Magisk Manager, if for some weird reason you don't, install it via apk
Then you just go to the settings, tick MagiskHide, then go back and open the side panel, MagiskHide - select the apps that you want Magisk to hide itself from
So I tried to do what you said.
I did the full unroot in the SuperSu App,
My phone rebooted
I shut it down again and booted into recovery
Tried flashing Magisk
But it failed, apparently due to my Boot image being patched by another program and told me to go with stock image
What do I do now? And will I lose any data by doing so? Thank you so much for any help!
Weird, but you can simply dirty flash LineageOS (the same one that you have now, or an update, doesn't matter) and it should let you install Magisk.
I did what you said and installed a delta update using LineageOS Downloader. Had to manually flash it in TWRP since I had no root permissions anymore. But I was able to install Magisk like a charm! Now I have to questions:
1. How do I update Magisk? Using the app?
2. Do I have to flash it again everytime I'm updating LOS?
Thanks for the great help so far!
And what exactly are those moduls? Should I be messing with them?
If updates come they will appear on the status bar and you can download them, and they'll install with the phone on. after that you have to (not quick) reboot your phone.
and about the modules, seriously? what do you think??

Updating Already Rooted (via Magisk) Pixel 2 XL from Android 8.x to 9.x

I am hoping I can bounce my plan of attack for updating my Pixel 2 XL that is already rooted (using Magisk Manager + Magisk) and currently running Magisk Manager 5.6.4 + Magisk v16.0 and Android 8.1 (build OPM1.171019.021) to the latest and greatest version of Android (looks like its currently v9.0 w/ build# PQ1A.181105.017.A1)
First off, I didn't use TWRP when originally rooting android v8.1 on my Pixel 2 XL previously, I didn't think I needed it and had no plan to ever install a custom ROM. I am still in this boat and would prefer not to install or use TWRP if possible. I went the route letting the magisk manager app on my phone update the (at that time) newest factory image of android then flashing that image back onto my phone via fastboot and everything went great.
Anyway - If anyone would look over my approach here and let me know if this should work or not I would appreciate it!
My plan for updating to android 9.0 and keeping root:
1. Download the last android factory image from google (currently PQ1A.181105.017.A1)
2. Backup everything on my phone I care about (pictures, etc)
3. Use fastboot to flash the latest factory image to my phone (I understand this will reset everything on my phone and I'll lose root for the time being)
4. Download magisk manager apk from ******************
5. Make sure my phone is setup to allow installation of apps from unknown sources, then install magisk manager on my phone
6. Use Magisk Manager to install magisk and use the option to "patch boot image file" to patch the boot.img file from the latest factory android image (currently PQ1A.181105.017.A1)
7. Use flashboot to flash the patched version of the latest factory android image (currently PQ1A.181105.017.A1) to my phone, then finally check that root is working by using Magisk Manager. Then restore my backed up files to my phone (e.g pictures)
Thanks in advance for the advice!
I'm rooted with magisk, i took the ota, knowing full well it wasn't going to complete while I'm rooted. Haha me... It took. Didn't lose a thing except root. 10 minutes later, I'm rooted on pie. No issues for me.
As for twrp, you don't flash it, you boot it. It runs until you reboot. I turn off security on the phone before I re- boot into the bootloader. Twrp did or still does have an issue with patterns. Otherwise it works great for my needs.

D802 any root methods are not working!

hi ppl
it was rooted before. used twrp and some custom roms. but later it unrooted somehow.
I tried flashing super su, magisk and ioroot. supersu and magisk turn with an error msg
io root made it stuck on bootloader animation so I flashed a backup.
how to root it?
thx in advance
1) flash latest twrp http://www.gregtwallace.com/lgg2-projects/twrp/ - then reboot into twrp
2) made absolutely all wipes incl internal and data (delete all stuff) - then reboot into twrp
3) connect to usb - and simply copy rom, gapps, and root solution what you want to flash
latest stable magisk for twrp - https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445
latest supersu for twrp - Recovery Flashable.zip http://www.supersu.com/download
3) flash the rom what you wanted and flash gapps
3) flash magisk or supersu
(if android 7.1.2 or higher of course - I recommend magisk, because of working nfc pay features, a lot of great systemless addons etc...)
if you prefer old lollipop rom (for example CloudyG2_3.3 ) - it supersu only.
This is the correct sequence - which will eliminate problems with the firmware. If you deleted and installed the root earlier (as you say)
I tried flashing super su, magisk and ioroot. supersu and magisk turn with an error msg

jeezes)) you already killed the rom.... and then restore the all this restores backup, this is a "dirty flash" with a bunch of "remnants". I recommend to do clean flash it in the specified sequence and everything will be ok.
You will spend a couple of 1-2 hours only on installing (and setting) completely all applications. It is not so difficult. But it will save you from a bunch of nonsense questions...
If you actually don't have TWRP recovery installed or old Kit kat Rom - this is absolutely another question and the instructions will not work for you. Also, Kit Kat and Lollipop based ROMs does not support Magisk - because of this error.

thx bro. I did all the steps but it seems same problem going on. sure I want the latest of everything. better updated all. so, using the latest twrp, I wipe all data then format all data then again wipe everything
this aosp rom and gapps worked perfectly. then flashed teh magisk but again its unrooted.
it installs magisk perfectly but root checker says its not rooted. anyway thx for help
btw, aosp rom android 9 has a bluetooth bug. giving a bluetooth stopped message every 10 seconds.
so any advice anout that problem?
you must grant root permission when popup (magisk) appears.
its not automatically
popup similar as in supersu
root works excellent on d802 with Magisk
for example Es File Explorer or any Root Checker

I use 7.1.2 android based AospExtended v 4.6

I used supersu and it turned out to be "certification verify" problem. OS not running because of this problem but says rooted. so I can still reach twrp but it really become annoying. this is my old phone and will use as 2nd in my Thailand trip soon.
what to do now? can I use unrooted with a sim card? with no problem?
Please, don't use this nonsense "overquoting" when you answer to someone. Have some respect to the forum rules, and users.
if you want stable rom for LGG2-D802 flash
1) aosp extended based on 7.1.2 or 8.1 versions of Android.
2) flash gapps nano
3) flash magisk zip
4) after rom starts - do the first quick settings - then open Magisk (and if needed update the Magisk manager)
Do not flash both (supersu and magisk) risk to brick the phone.
"device not certified" messege will be always if you use Supersu. It's obviously. Using supersu you unable to use apps like Google pay or any banking apps, because of system root.
Magisk is systemless solution, that's why Google do not recognize Magisk's root. And Play Store on about screen always show "Your device is certified". Also you can Hide root from some apps using Hide option in Magisk manager (it's very useful for local banking apps).
I have a suspicion that you used an older version of Android KitKat (official). And now you try to flash a new Rom (above the Android 7.1.2+). You can't do this. Because you must have Lollipop bootloader. You must be an Android Lillipop first. And then (get Root, then TWRP). And after all that - you will be able to flash some of Rom we are talking about.

Oh Finally!
dowloaded aosp 8.1 and all done. I was trying to use android 9 to be updated. But, pie becoming to be a "creampie" to me so I listened your word. and did it
just opened recovery mode and deleted all the zips. and copied new ones and flashed in order
1) aosp extended 8.1
2) open gapps nano for 8
3) magisk beta (yes this time I tried beta ver and it worked!)
after settings etc. checked with root checker and it was ok. so magisk.apk is not necessary now
thx again bro

11.0.2.2 and keeping root?

Now that 11.0.2.2 is available OTA, can anybody give me a quick guide on how to upgrade from my existing 11.0.1.1 without losing root?
Hi. you have to download the full rom package. disable all modules in magisk. update in local update system. especially do not restart. and in magisk manager click on install and install on inactive slot after OTA update. magisk will recreate a boot image on the inactive slot. which will become active on restart. once the restart is complete the root is kept. all that remains is to reactivate the magisk modules.

I have a guide in the guides section for this very reason with img's
Hello.... Normally you have to install the twrp a/b script after install the local update and then the magisk in inactive slot.....
That was ok in a lot of older updates and works.
This time if can't install the twrp a/b script. Everytime I get a fault message that twrp is not present....?!
Very strange.....

That script is for older devices that has recovery inside boot.
OnePlus devices launches with Android 10 has a separate recovery slot. This means in order to install TWRP again your need to flash it with fastboot again.
Twrp not working on Oos11

So it isn't necessary to install, only magisk in inactive slot....?!
Have said this before, shouldn't be any confusion, like I said I have a guide for it.
Extract from the guide for retaining root.
Update from 11 stable to 11+ stable whilst retaining root
For these guides the version used, was canary, simply change the channel to canary then select install / update:
Magisk Manager - Magisk (Canary) version: 1469b82a (21101)
Magisk - Magisk (Canary) version: 1469b82a (21101)
1. Download the relevant firmware for your device via oxygen updater
2. Open Magisk and remove all the modules you have installed, then reboot
**NOTE- At this point I copied out the whole firmware to my computer and extracted payload then extracted the contents of payload using payload dumper, the full firmware for 11.0.1.1 EU IN2023BA ,the boot img and patched boot img are at the foot of this guide.
3. Open up settings / system / system updates, click the cog and select "Local Upgrade" the file should be listed on screen, if not then move the file to the root of your phones storage /sdcard
4. Click install and allow it to go through the process
**NOTE- DO NOT REBOOT AT THIS POINT YOU WILL LOSE THE ABILITY TO PATCH ON THE FLY, SIMPLY BACK OUT OF THE SCREEN WHICH SAYS INSTALLATION COMPLETED. RESTART TO EXPERIENCE NEW FEATURES
5. Open up magisk and click install (you may see two install buttons, top one is magisk and the bottom is magisk manager, we need the top one)
6. You'll be faced with a screen that has several options, you want to select Install to Inactive slot (After OTA) then select "LET'S GO" once complete click reboot
7. Once your phones booted up your system / files should all remain as they were and you should have root access.
Thread:. https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-8-pro/how-to/root-uk-eu-patched-magisk-boot-img-t4175033
You have an easier method if the OTA update is there in the system. Follow below guide. Specifically, step 2,3 and 5. That's all you need. You don't need the whole update. Tested this twice. 11 to 11.0.1.1 and so on.

Steps 5 and 6 did not preserve root comping from OOS10. Magisk Manager is still there though. Looks like I'll be looking for a way to apply root again.
Edit: used the boot image from this link to get root back. I wasn't able to patch the file myself using Magisk Manager and fastboot boot it and have root enabled. https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=83775505&postcount=471
I was able to use the oneplus-8-pro_15.O.30_boot_patched IMG from the link to adb boot oneplus-8-pro_15.O.30_boot_patched.img from fastboot screen and then direct install Magisk from the manager. I retained root after a reboot.

That must be you're magisk manager and or you left magisk modules enabled..
Otherwise your phone wouldn't be booted at all..
To confirm, the steps have been used 100's of times without problems, the few that have issues have specific problems, namely what I mentioned above but more often than not they have an issue they aren't aware of and don't declare to be so I can't help them.
I would hazard a guess that that is the problem

It was a couple of modules I forgot about. Got it sorted now. Thanks.
Not sure if the question was answered really. I have the ota update alert but can't install the ota without flashing the original boot.img (not a problem just have to get in front of a computer)..I tried this method but the full image on oxygen updater and OnePlus support site is 11.0.1.1 and not the new 11.0.2.2.
What's the easiest way of doing an ota without having to flash back stock boot.img, taking the ota, and reinstalling magisk/patching image if there's one?
Wait for the 11.0.2.2 Full update to keep root; that's what a few of us are waiting on as well

Thanks. Anybody had problems flashing back stock boot partition and taking the ota/rooting again manually via patched magisk image?
I've read some threads about problems and success's. I would check them out if your interested. I just take the ota, have magisk install to the inactive slot, and then reboot.

You were able to take the ota without reflashing stock boot.img? It's currently failing for me and I'm fairly sure it's because I have a patched boot partition (this happened already when I upgraded via ota from oxygen 10 that's why I'm fairly sure). Let me know.
Sounds like because of your patched boot.
No, I have not seen the full ota 11.0.2.2 to download, I was giving an example....

Right way to update rooted Oneplus 8 Pro

Hi everyone,
I'm running:
- Oneplus 8 Pro + latest Magisk
- Android 12, version C33
- I see there's an update to C35
I have Oxygen Updater which can be set to:
- incremental
- full updates (recommended for rooted phones)
I see a lot of threads here (some with conflicting info) about incremental, full updates, OTA updates if not via Oxygen Updater, Magisk flash to inactive slot, Magisk rooting normally, etc.
While reading all of them I got more or less confused
Can someone help me with an advice as to what would be the right way to upgrade from my C33 to C35 without ending up with a boot loop and a weekend of recovering my phone? (already had this 2 times and it was a horrific experience to go through)?
Do I download the full update with Oxygen Updater and then after install, without rebooting, go to Magisk and install to inactive slot?
Thank you!

Yes that would be correct. At least that's how I've done it before. But, as always, keep backups.

YMMV but this worked for me.
I used the "Oxygen Updater" app to download the F.62 (Android 13) Full OTA and flashed it using the local upgrade app from OnePlus (I have stock recovery). Make sure to re-install Magisk to inactive slot before rebooting.
After that l upgraded to F.63 (latest OTA) following these instructions:
Open Magisk Manager, select “Uninstall” and choose the “Restore Images” option. Magisk will restore your phone’s stock boot image that was backed up during the rooting process.
Now go to “Settings” → “System” → “System updates” and select “Download and Install Now” to install the OOS OTA update on your rooted phone.
After the update finishes, DO NOT REBOOT the phone. Since you restored the stock boot image, the root access will be lost if your reboot right now.
Now open Magisk Manager, press “Install” and select “Install to Inactive Slot (After OTA)” from the list of available methods.
Finally, select “Let’s Go” to confirm and install Magisk to the inactive slot (where the OxygenOS OTA has been installed).
After Magisk is installed, reboot your phone by pressing the ‘Reboot’ button.

I don't know if the first step was necessary or not... anyway my data was all intact afterwards. Probably best to back up anything important just in case!
Hello,
Thank you so much. Great news, it worked for me too ! In case someone wants to do the same, here's the procedure that worked for me :
