Well, my phone has been freaking out a bit lately (Handcent not showing contact pics, Contacts not syncing with FB, FCes here and there, etc.) so I decided to start from scratch and reload everything. I tried all kind of resets (CLEAR STORAGE in FastBoot, Wipe Data, MSL Reset, etc.) and every time my phone loads up, Fresh 3.1.0.1 is already installed with all the apps I had. I understand Fresh being there, but why are all my apps staying?! Because of this, all the problems I've been facing seem to be staying as well.
This is really getting annoying. Anyone recommend a more aggressive alternative to clearing out as much as possible?! I have TB prepared to restore my apps already. The rest can be synced so I don't care.

put the engineering hboot from toast's part 2 on your sdcard and run it, it will wipe everything
Although I don't know why wiping everything from your recovery wont do the job.. I've heard Clockwork doesn't always wipe completely but I've never had an issue with ra's recovery
I have already done that and tried CLEAR STORAGE without any luck. The third-party apps still remain. WTF! Makes no sense...

And from the recovery menu selecting "wipe data/factory reset" does nothing?
It wipes everything but the apps. The settings, scenes, etc are all gone. But the apps are still there. And so are the conflicts I was getting.

Just as an FYI if you run the factory reset, it will ERASE the "32gb internal memory" also.
That is ****ing retarded! So every time I need for wipe for custom ROM I need to back up 32 GB worth of data!?!

Well. "Factory Reset" to me would mean an "Out of the box state" - meaning all yo **** be gone.
My wifes Optimus S wipes the SD card with a factory reset as well. Never done one on my Epic, but I would assume it's the same.

Any device with built in storage will wipe that storage on a factory reset. Also, right under where it says "Factory data reset" it also says "Erases all data on tablet".
tbh, it's your own fault if you lose data doing this.

This is actually what I expect from a factory reset! I even wish it would not just delete the memory but overwrite it with zeroes or something.
Is this the 'Factory Data Reset' under 'Privacy' that you speak of? If so, does that truly reset everything as if you just got it out of the box? Root/Kernels/everything?
Just asking as I need to do this since I have done something over the course of the Xoom's life that isn't allowing me to flash BRD's kernels as well as CWM isn't working correctly. Might as well start over and if this does that... then great.
I have seen all the stock dumps in the dev section, but honestly just not sure how to do a complete 'back to stock' wipe.

Its interesting. On my atrix, it leaves all my data and even flashing the sbf. Only wipes the system data and replaces it. Not data. Dont know why the xoom would do it.
So if it sounds right it would delete EVERYTHING on the internal wtf I would need a 64 micro SD for backing up later on

Hai all, I'm new to iconia. I've been flashing a custom ROM, a Taboonay ROM, great ROM.
I'm curious about get the original setup like a brand new iconia, without any trash folder after I restored my stock ROM. Tried with hitting the reset button, but it didn't work at all, still got the titanium backup folder and documents..is there anyway i could do to make it clean like i bought from the shop?

I tried this steps so many times, but still the old folder exsist, thank you for the response.
There is a thread in the Dec section that talks about during entering recovery switching the orientation rocker.and also a thread of putting a blank file landed something then flashing that as well.both of these or one might be related to your issue.
Good luck.I just remember reading those threads.have not tried either as no need to.

Hmm, pretty sure the orientation rocker startup is just for clearing cache - I could be wrong. Took me like 20 times to get it to work, remember using it a few times when i thought I had bricked my a500

Especially step #5 where it formatted the boot, system, and data:
It's like you formatted the hard drive on your desktop before installing the OS

I think i'll try it, because only wipe & factory reset still keep all folder like gameloft, titanium, etc..even all downloaded files remain exsist...so it's not enough...
I used Titanium Backup to uninstall certain packages (not before backing them up, of course) and it seems that I uninstalled too much... Whenever I start certain applications, the phone immediately blanks - and locks.
I have to press the power button 1-2 times before the screen unlock allows me to seep my finger. And it doesn't always succeed in retaining the screen: too often, it will immediately blank and lock again.
Example of applications that make the phone lock: Titanium Backup.
Example of applications that don't blank the phone: Dialer.
I started restoring some of the packages I uninstalled yesterday with the hope that this will fix the problem. So far I tried restoring:
- hiddenmenus
- sns
- Dialer 2.2.2
-setup wizard
- syncMLsvc
But without much success yet.
Any idea which service or package are responsible for correct behavior of the phone?
UPDATE 2: I gave up and decided to flash the EC07-Nuckin-1 ROM. I repeated the entire procedure detailed here and the phone boots fine, but the problem persists - in addition to the fact that the soft menu buttons now disappeared (replaced by faint color dots - LED-like).
How could this happen? Is it possible that my phone contracted an Android virus? (it appears that the problem started immediately after installing Stay Awake from the Android Market.
OK, this is becoming insane: I did a factory reset, re-installed ec07-clean, and not only the problem persists, the settings, home, back and search buttons no longer work!
Not to mention that my account details (and everything else) are still there, even after the factory reset...
And Market won't even start.
How is this possible?

those softkey mod (led dots) are in the rom, look at what ur downloading/flashing first.
did u clear caches/dalvik??? clear them before u flash ec07clean and after and see buddy.

Is there a way to do a real factory reset? Start all over again? This problem is driving me nuts.

I'm out and about right now. In joshkoss rom thread there is a dl17 stock rom. If u flollow that second post I believe u will achieve 2. 1 stock as in out the box and flash up from there

I'm not really interested in 2.1. I just don't understand why a total re-install of ec07clean.zip + ec07.tar + update.zip won't restore everything to "brand new condition". Surely there is a way to tell the phone to "forget all history". But what is it?
In the meanwhile, I managed to make the Settings (leftmost) button work, by manually restoring SDM from Titanium Backup.
Android Market now starts. But the SCREEN OFF problem persists. I am now beginning to believe that Stay Awake actually caused a permanent damage.

i understand, but see dl17 is the latest official samsung/verizon release, so what ever you erased will be brought back. the roms that are released here are leaks/hacked so they wouldnt be 100% until tweaked

I understand that they aren't 100% and I am OK with that. All I want is bring the phone to that pristine state it was right after I upgraded it from DL17 to ec07clean.zip.
Is this possible at all?
I even tried the built in stock recovery 2e to do "factory restore". Didn't help.
Why doesn't it even delete my account information? This is weird.

I tried this at least 4 times. It doesn't get rid of anything. That's really puzzling.
In the meanwhile, I managed to restore my phone to a usable state (i.e. get rid of the original screen-off problem). Here is how I did it:
Settings > Display Settings > Power saving mode: UNCHECK (was checked)
Settings > Display Settings > Screen timeout: 1 minute (non was selected!)
I bet this was some remanent of that Stay Awake app.
Now, I lost quite a few productivity hours due to this. But at least now I know that this phone will always be mine, because in this particular phone, "Factory data reset" simply doesn't work.
Have you thought about using a different version of clockwork for flashing and wiping? That usually helps or perhaps stock recovery even

Mystery solved!
It turns out that it is the cyan wipe that doesn't work. The red wipe works.
Here is what I did:
Settings > Privacy > Factory data reset (Erases all data on phone) > Reset phone > Erase everything attempt:
Progressed as expected, then rebooted -- right into Android System recover <2e> (blue!):

After rooting and getting different ROMs. Something happened and I get all these error messages on different things. It is most likely a corrupt file, but when I factory reset, it is still the same. How do I fix this? I factory reset and didn't even restore anything. I am on basically a new phone. I also still have all my app data though.

You need to do a full wipe, meaning everything (except the sdcard), especially the system.
How are you doing the factory reset btw? If you're doing it via the recovery, you're good to go. After doing the factory reset, go into the advanced wipe section and wipe the system also. If you are using TWRP, you can select system on the first screen after choosing wipe.

Since I don't have cwm installed, I'd be doing you a disservice, but try wiping everything from the recovery and try again. Most roms will wipe system and so forth, but not all of them does a good job of it and end up leaving bits and pieces lying around.
