Hello,
I picked up my GS4 about a week ago but haven't really used it in direct sunlight until today. I was outside, and the sun was shining brightly on the screen. Home screen was fine, and darker images were ok, but if I were to go to an app with a primarily white background, or open up something which used the keyboard (texting) the screen would flicker pretty noticeably. Brightness is all the way up, and auto tone was off.
Has anyone else seen this?
yup this is normal esp when using the keyboard.
Im not sure if it will be fixed.

I guess my question is, is this a hardware issue with many GS4's or a minority. I came across a thread on the Tmobile GS4 forum where people were experiencing it, but it seems not everyone is.

Its a hardware thing, but also its only in touchwiz so a developer might be able to turn it off so to speak.
It adjusts the color and tone no matter what to save the display from overheating and or burning in...
Does it a lot and I notice it cause im weird about those kinds of things.
If you use CM 10.1 or AOKP its gone.
ive made some progress with the RGB light meter on this; hoping a friend can write up some code so we can test out a 'smoothed out' transition and sampling rate and one that is sped up, averaged faster, but will take up more CPU and RAM and battery but more accurate.
here is another thread regarding it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2280715
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2284726
Maybe if someone who is using CM10 or AOKP could test it to see if it is a software issues and not a hardware issue?
edit: slade and jet replied while I was writing this...thanks for the info. looks like it is touchwiz related.
edit2: just went out in the sun again to test a lot of different options in the display settings (which none worked) but is seems it is only happening when the keyboard is enabled. I am using swiftkey.
yeah TW and that sensor communicate; i believe the sensor itself probably works better ALONE, but TW changes it and throttles it for either battery or screen safety.
It is always dependent on what is being pulled up on the screen, though it can be mitigated quite a bit if you disable all power saving and screen auto features, and leave brightness under 80% or so.
yea anything under 80% in direct sun is basically black. all power saving and screen auto modes were disabled. i covered up all of the sensors too and it still flickered....

Not just a sensor thing per-say.
It's hard to explain, they most likely did it because they didn't want the amoled to burn in.
Its the same reason why the brightness goes up another 34% or so on auto above the max brightness. Only uses it when needed to save the screen and battery.
Does it on youtube too btw, bring up a video on wide screen then tap it and you'll see the drastic color shift
I noticed this thing when I got my phone also. I thought I was just imagining it but I guess it's an actual problem

Seriously its about power handling/battery saving and white balance, but its noticeable, and annoying.

No that's not possible, its hard coded into touchwiz, this isn't a bug or anything...
If people say they don't have it; they're not noticing it.

Thought my eyes were going crazy. Mine does this too. It even did it once under some fluorescent lights. It's not annoying enough to matter but it would be cool if it gets fixed.
Have had this issue since I first got my nook. When sleeping the screen will flash, not very bright, hard to see outside of a fully darkened room. Has anyone seen a way to fix this?

Hi all,
Been a while since I've posted but looking for some expert advice.
In our organisation we have a Nexus 10, the device was setup for demo purposes and is on all day and has a presentation running on it with kisosk browser pro. after a year we experienced screen burn (white became yellow etc) due to poor design of using a AMOLED screen.
My question to you guys/girls is what rom gives you "schedule power off/on" feature in settings that is also a stable rom.
Please don't reply stating this cannot be done as it can and has been for years on most chinese manufactured phones/tablets and on great roms like Color OS.
Thank you and always appreciate help from everyone.

Even though this does not matter related to your question, the Nexus 10 uses IPS not AMOLED screen technology. Both can have burn in issues if the screen displays static images for too long.

Thanks for that, never really looked into tasker before but my only concern is can it switch the device on once off?
Do you mean completely off or screen off? There is no app, addon, module which can boot a device.

I was after something to completely boot the device from powered off well it seems that way unless its more like a deep sleep?!?... again this feature is available on some alcatel devices and a lot of chinese based devices within settings called "Schedule power off/on" and i have used the feature on these devices.

The above link shows the options i have used before.
Thanks everyone for you comments and help, hopefully i can find a stable rom with these options

So I was having screen burn issue on my Redmi Note 4 Snapdragon varient and I was really sad to see burn in issues after flashing Resurrection Remix ROM.
Burn in issue didn't happen to me before but after I flashed Custom ROM, I started noticing it.
So then I went to Service Centre and I showed them the issue.. They replaced my LCD Panal.. I was happy and thought I'd not get burn in issue again.. But nope.. It happened again..
Then I started searching for posts about burn in issue.. And finally on this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-4/help/screen-burn-mido-3-32-tianma-display-t3673540 @muzaffarsyam
posted a fix for this.. So first I thought it was a hardware issue but after trying his solution, I realised that it was actually software issue.. It's Actually Colour Calibration issue..
All You need to do is set the "Colour Calibration" as shown in the attachment and It will fix the issue.. This is tested by me and @muzaffarsyam and so far it's working fine.. He has given me the permission to make a thread for this issue...

Hi, good thing we come to conclusion to solution, everything I do before this thread started not working.
I`ll try to sett the contrast to Cool (MIUI) since only this logic solution.
I try to check the LCD on CIT and the issue not showing, so I`m 60% sure this is software/setting issue

It is well-known problem and has nothing to do with Pixel Experience ROM or any other firmware. It is due to extremely low quality touch screens Xiaomi uses nowadays.

It's definitely from the phone screen, no question. If you're a heavy media consumer, I recommend black themes (substratum or from rom itself) and a rom with screen burn-in protection feature, like Havoc os for example. Decrease the interval from 60 seconds to less, like 40 or so.
I made a thread months ago about this:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-7/help/redmi-note-7-image-retention-t3930167
it is not related to pixel experience, some screens are simply defective and of poor quality, as Xiaomi usually does.
I found a way to fix the image retention: if you have a rom that has livedisplay, such as lineageos or pixel experience plus, in the color calibration section, set rgb intensity to a value close to 90% For me 93% has worked and I consider that my problem is already quite severe, since then image retention has not been a problem for me.
