Root Verizon models soon to come - Google Pixel 2 XL Guides, News, & Discussion

Fingers crossed! I'm still on the Sep '19 build so I'll finally get to experience the last year of updates.

Oh boy. Can't wait

Wait what?

Is there a source for this info? As much as I want this to happen, I'm very doubtful.

There is no source. OP is jerking your collective chains, or else has misread the unlock method for the OG Pixel as applying to the P2XL.
OP, if you have documented verifiable proof you need to show it.

I call BS. Carry on.

I hate these posts but have to come here and beg for devs to try again for the bootloader unlock, I really really want to hold out for the 5, so lineage would be a nice help right about now.

4.4 Kit Kat to arrive "in a matter of weeks"

If the build date of the leaks wasn't enough proof that Motorola is very busy working on Kit Kat, let this be further proof:
http://www.androidcentral.com/moto-x-get-android-44-kitkat-matter-weeks
Needless to say, I am impressed.
I hope so, im in pain seeing users here from AT&T enjoying their 4.4.
And then Verizon "tests" it for next 9 months.

I'm talking more on Motorola's end. This is quite admirable what they're doing.
Obviously, the carriers will **** around like they always do. But that's not Motorola's fault really.

I never understood why the carriers didn't have an opt-in program to get updates ASAP that essentially cut off your customer service if you opted in. Here, you can do it, but no, we won't help you. Its a flag on your account, so anywhere you go they'll see it and know not to help you. Their point is that they don't want to help people on 'untested' updates... fine then, don't help them. But this would be a HUGE PR boon for whatever carrier does it.
This is good news! Hopefully Verizon won't be too far behind. Maybe a couple weeks like the camera update.

It's basically an opt-in staged roll out. If you register, you have the ability to be the first to receive an update... so there's a sizeable pool for motorola to determine if there are any major bugs before giving it to the masses. Typically, these things happen and everyone else gets the update about a week later.

A soak test is where a group of people are chosen to do a sort of private beta test on the firmware, to make sure things don't assplode or catch fire before the software is rolled out to everyone.

It's probably because to most people updates are not something they think about. The people that unsupported updates would appeal to are probably very small and at least to the carriers probably seems more complicated to have more programs rather than less.
The other concern of theirs isn't support. It's about their network. Verizon is really strict about how their network can be used and that's a big part of the reason that ATT got the iPhone for years before verizon. They want absolute control over how the network is used probably due to a fear of a small number of devices clogging up bandwidth.
The funny thing is in spite of the rules bootloaders get unlocked. Phones get rooted. ROMs get flashed and it doesn't seem to cause many apparent problems.
Edit: and I'll just add that most carrier support is clueless anyway - most answers are
-reset your phone
-delete all of your apps.
-do something you already tried.
I hope 4.4 kit kat won't affect Moto X's good battery life.

Hints on lollipop release date!

I was talking to live chat with Motorola support and managed to get connected to an employee who seemed to not care that the chat session was monitored.
I was asking about general stuff related to my battery and the Turbo. Towards the end of the chat I figured this guy might have some kind of idea whats going on in the company that he works for. So I asked about the release date for 5.0.
He answered very enthusiastically and hinted that Motorola is ready to release the update and that the only thing next on their list is to select an official Advert with Verizon. From the sound of it - we will not be experiencing the usual delay that Verizon has created for updates. Expect Lollipop on your Droid Turbo by December 1st.
Me personally. I'm waiting for root and boot unlock. But for all of you happy with Lollipop the wait is not too long.
Lets see if this all plays true come December 1st.

Yeah, with JCase saying that Sunshine V3.0 can't support Motorola on 4.4.4, and the secure kernel crap that will block root on Lollipop, I think this phone will stay stock unless a Chinese middleman pops up again or something.
Guys just realize you can kiss any hope of an unlock and root exploit goodbye if you update. It's going to suck; either choose unlock or 5.0
I pretty much left root behind when I got the Turbo. Moved to the share plan so I don't need the hotspot hack. I used TiBu a lot moving from phone to phone and ROM to ROM but I really didn't have much data that I had to have. Mostly when I was listening to back catalogs of Podcasts I would want to restore the app I was using so it kept my place. Now I have moved on to something different. And I did lose some game data but it was stupid stuff like Temple Run and Monsters Ate My Condo, nothing like an RPG or something. And really thats what root did for me. I am ready for 5.0.
I also think that the 5.0 update will have VoLTE. Maybe they got Google to roll it into 5.0 so instead of hitting each device individually with a VoLTE update, if they get 5.0 they will also get VoLTE (and it brings the Nexus 6 on VoLTE faster as well).

Chainfires detailed post on how root will more than likely (read; definitely) going to need a custom kernel to work. Kernel flashes need an unlocked bootloader. 5.0 comes with even more selinux restrictions which make any kind of exploitation harder. All in all, 5.0 is way more locked down and harder to unlock. Simply getting a root exploit without unlock is not likely

Root Achieved

For those who haven't been watching the Bounty thread, it's been confirmed that the Turbo has indeed been rooted by maiko1, see here and here for proof in videos. Also, jcase has confirmed that it is legit here.
I'll keep this thread up to date as more info becomes available, but it seems like the wait could finally be over! Can't say anything yet as to if or when the method will be released, but this is definitely great news!
Edit 3/13: jcase has stated that sunshine will not work on the Turbo even when root is released.. Yet. We can hope, but as of right now the bootloader will remain locked.
Edit 3/17: multiple developers have stated that *IF* the turbo gets a BL unlock, they will work on porting Cyanogenmod to it.
Edit 3/18: maiko1 has indicated that "final stages of testing have begun" for the root method.
Edit 3/25: the root method is supposedly going to be out later today! See here where it is confirmed last night for a release today.
EDIT 3/25: ROOT IS LIVE! Get it while it's hot!
Sweet, this is good news. Don't have a Turbo but this may be the deciding factor.
Wow, made my night. But I'll take the wait and see approach for now, video's look good and remarks from trusted members, call me doubting Thomas but I'll wait to really dance around when the instructions and files are available. Ok,I lied I'm dancing now!!!

Once we get root. Sunshine should work I hope?
I still don't think its 100% legit. It's gonna take more than two videos to convince me. The ONLY reason I'm even considering that its real is because jcase is backing it...

Now that is an extremely difficult thing to ponder. I've been wanting Lollipop on this phone really bad, but with root I could actually figure out what's keeping my phone awake and do Titanium backups! Aaaah, I'll probably choose root.

Keeping Root with Insurance Replacement

I have a Verizon Galaxy Note 3. with Android Version: 4.3, Jellybean... I have avoided updating to Kitkat since I had heard that it was "unrootable" at this point.
Recently, I cracked the screen on my phone and would like to get an insurance replacement from Asurion. I am worried that I may get a phone from them with Kitkat on it. (or maybe even Lollipop?)
What are my options for keeping root?
IF I get a phone that still has Jellybean on it, is my best option for getting Lollipop+Root, to install Safestrap on my phone, and then install something like JasmineROM?
Thanks!
This happened to me. They'll send you one with 5.0 or 4.4.4 NK1. Ended up just buying an LG G3 full retail and keeping the note 3 as a spare.

I would personally look into the cost of having your screen replaced.
Asurion is going to charge you $100. deductible if I'm not mistaken.
Plus you will more than likely get a phone with at least 4.4.4 on it and maybe even lollipop. Neither of which will be rootable, 4.4.2 was the last version that is rootable at this point.

I moved up to the Note 3 from the S3 because the charging port quite working and Asurion wanted $150 deductible. It's no longer worth having the insurance if they're going to start charging 1/3 of the cost of a new phone plus the monthly fee.

I'll give a more detailed response, probably should have did that from the start . Its broad anywhere/settings intent; the system passes it privileges to an app when adding an account. Using this we can push the required binaries for su access. There's probably other ways to do this as well. This Is also present in both 4.4.4 and 5.0
So when I said I'm working on it I'm creating an application that will carry the pay load and carry out the code.
Don't worry, I'm not going to ruin my reputation with false root claims. Its coming one way or another.

Good luck to you.
I've got faith in CovXX getting this done. The vulnerability has been know for several months, but nobody has attempted to use it on the Note 3 before, that's why it's not happened yet. Most devs working on root have jumped ship to the Note 4 or other phones prior to 4.4.4 being released on the Note 3. It's good to have at least one dev remaining to attempt it.

This is Verizon we're talking about. Wouldn't surprise me if it does relock.

Judging from the threads of what happened to the phones of people who tried to do that, it would result in a ton of warranty claims. Verizon doesn't want that.

Right. The potential downside is far larger than any gain to Verizon from relocking the bootloader.
They WILL probably lock down the phone from the Sunshine exploit with the new update, and probably they'll lock it down for good this time. So if you want to unlock your phone, do it before the next update.

while i completely agree, it would be funny if Lenovo *actually, for once fixed* what Motorola used to do. in this scenario, they should open the floodgates, and just allow unlock for all turbos bl for everyone. Two years later, i am sure there are few, if any, still retaining warranty and stuck on contract.
limit the time that you agree to keep phones bootloader locked. and always, always, always give the 1% of the 1% of users the option to buy a dev edition.
back to the point, it would cost them more money to write that into the update for the sake of us 1%ers, so i dont see it happening.
time will tell if the turbo is another a855; that phone people cling to for 2-3 years realizing upgrading isnt that necessary. I'm ready for a new one. but i refuse to buy another non- bootloader unlockable phone EVER. and nothing at all is really impressive at this point. the Axon 7 is awesome. and a maybe. but moto lost it. if they made a 2016 MXPE with an sd 820 better battery and wireless charging and all carriers radios, id pay $600 in a heartbeat. but what do 1%ers know? lol.

They don't give a crap about warranty claims...it's always been about control for Verizon. Used to, it was down to them not wanting people to tether and take advantage of their high/unlimited data caps...since that's been built into Android for several versions now, I'm not sure what their rationale for disallowing unlocks is. Probably to prevent what we're doing; upgrading the software on our more-than-adequate hardware.
They'd rather you lock yourself into a contract and buy one of their new phones, after all. Trying to force you to do so is worth having one of their devs spend an hour or three to port the exploit patch(es) and write a code snippet to lock the bootloader, and not providing an unlock service just saves them money.
As for Lenovorola, they couldn't care less; they've already made any money that they can off of the phones. There's zero incentive for them to help in any way, especially since the phone is over two years old and was designed/produced during the promising-looking period that Google owned Motorola. They, too, would prefer you buy a new phone, perhaps one of their increasingly-generic ones.
So yea...it's still in VZW's best interest to be slightly scummy about the bootloader situation. They'll make more money off spending a bit to continue to (try to) exert their control, rather than caring about what any of their customers want.
-----------
I like this bit at the end of the article:
There is one bit of bad news here for DROID Turbo owners. Since the device is not expected to be updated to Android 7.0, this is the end of the line in terms of Android updates for the model.

Considering official MM on Verizon was looking more and more unlikely to materialize, I imagine that most will just shrug their shoulders at this. It's been a given for a long time that the Turbo was hanging on to VZW's upgrade list by its fingernails.
Sweet!
@jcase says he has a copy of Verizon's Marshmallow. It's coming.
He also says it much harder to unlock the bootloader, so best to do it now if you are going to do it.
Hopefully this is another fake soak and they release it concurrently. From what I've heard, a lot of prior moto soaks were put out as otas almost at the same time. As Verizon users, we need that radio for our nougat rom!!!

Hehe, Verizon didn't like knowing I was rooted. They dropped me from the program.
