At least 10 times a day, I'm dropping signal. It does not affect voice or text messages.
For no reason I will simply not have mobile data. I'll have full bars and it still shows LTE, however chrome and any games I might be playing simply hang. Sometimes if I go airplane mode on and off, and I'll fix it. other times I'll just wait a minute or two and I will have restore data.
I have tried restarts which usually fixes the problem. I've tried updating profile and PRL, but that doesn't help.
I figured I would reach out to the community to see if someone has more information.
Thanks for any insight y'all might have.
I wasn't sure if this was a Sprint issue or if perhaps the v20 is outdated in the bands that it supports? Or perhaps some other issue and I am unaware of.
Did these issues just recently start out of nowhere?
I'm pretty sure Sprint has had the same LTE bands (25, 26, 41) since around 2013, so unless they have been messing around with new 5G stuff in your area, I wouldn't expect your coverage to change. I'm on a Sprint MVNO, and coverage in my area has always been the same over the years.
Maybe it's some kind of hardware issue (antennas gone bad?) with your V20.

I hadn't really considered the antennas, but I don't know of any way to check them. Generally the signal works and I don't have any issues. The problem is the frequency that I am lacking internet connection for are between 30 seconds to a minute is unnerving.
Some days it rarely happens, but often I am experiencing this at least a dozen times per day. I did go in and fully reset the network settings, that might have helped. Too soon to tell. Of course I have updated the PRL and Network, funny how it just says though settings are updated whether or not they actually install a new update.
I am an addict to the second screen and I love the removable battery of my v20. I also have a hard time upgrading because I don't like the screen ratios of most of the new phones and I refuse to go to a Galaxy line because I don't like the curved screen, those things are just too darn expensive to replace and fragile! (I do miss some of the features of the galaxy line though... How the settings are laid out and the sms delay option, etc)
Thank you very much for taking your time to share your thoughts!
Hopefully the network settings reset did the trick. I've had this phone for about a year and a half now and never experienced connectivity issues when on cellular data although I'm a low mobile data user.
I'm totally with you when it comes to hanging on to the V20. The removable battery is not something most of us are willing to give up easily. Battery life itself can be pretty good, too, if you have one of those 4100–4300 mAh 3rd party Lithium polymer batteries.
For sending delayed/scheduled SMS, have you ever tried other texting apps? I've been using an older version of Textra for a long time coming from previous phones as it is one of the few where MMS works over Wi-Fi cleanly for me, and the scheduled message option had always been there.

Thanks for your help!
I ended up just buying a pixel 3a xl. Starting to get some image bleeding and other strange issues. The v20 still has resale value and the 3a xl is a great value.
Paid 170 with a 30 day return policy. Considering 3a will continue to have updates for 2 years and I haven't gotten an update in 2 years... Felt it 2as a good time to change.
I am going to greatly miss the second screen though!

Hello all
As the title suggests, fhis setting will improve battery life, but is usefull for USA users only. I decided to put this in a new thread to make it easier to find, I have been going nuts over battery life. As you can tell from my name, I am an athena owner who just got my HD2 about a week ago - but got better battery life out of that huge phone than I do with the HD2. I started reading post after post re battery problems, some got good life, others bad. One who reported good life had it in airplane mode and I realized that the data bands on the phone are useless stateside - we can only use EDGE over GSM. So I made the following setting changes...
Go to comm manager
Tap on phone (NOT ON/OFF SWITCH)
Go to Band at bottom
Change top from Auto to GSM
Change bottom from Auto to (1900/850) (CONFIRM YOUR CARRIER FRQUENCIES!!!)
This stops the phone from endlessly searching for HSPDA/3G on 2100/900 frequency - this eats battery like crazy. Without making any other mod, my battery now gives me an honest days work. Ex. I took the phone off charger at 7:00 am at 100%, its now 10:30 pm and I have 25% remaing a full days use, I even posted this from my device.
For those with USA ATT or T-Mo, let me know how it works for you. My phone is straight out of the box, no mods or reg tweaks and this single change almost doubled batt life.
Enjoy!
Omg if this works i'll kiss you. I never bothered to click on that band setting, so I didn't even know those options were in there. The only thing I thought I could disable was in Advanced Network settings.
Good thinking that man!
it give you better battery life but well cost you on webb browsing slow gprs no 3g speed i hope it helps
We are in the US so we can't use 3G on our HD2's. Edge is actually pretty fast on this device, a lot faster than my iPhone 3GS is on edge.
Admittedly my day has only been a Saturday, but the battery (at 7.20pm) is still showing 70% and I only changed the 'Auto' at the top to GSM...didn't do the rest! Cool!
Full day at work...35% battery left! Looking good!
Thanks!
This worked great I did not even have to switch to my Xperia X1 today. I think I will try this on my sony to see if I can push it to a two day of battery.
9.10pm and it's still at 29%.
Thanks!
I don't know about battery life yet but in the case of bad reception it actually downloads data much better.
When trying to download data it used to constantly fail, but now it works immediately. Apparently otherwise it tries to download in 3g and fails. When there is good reception it knows what to choose but not in the case of bad reception.
I still can't get over that the US doesn't have proper 3G coverage though... I'm in Aus and our 3G coverage is quite good. Don't have to worry about it switching to GSM
I know this thread is centered around battery life but does anyone here have the HD2 and using it on at&t? If so, do you have the ability to enter at&t settings to get MMS messages in the new HTC messaging app in the HD2?

Isn't the problem that the US use different frequencies in their 3G network than most other countries, and the HD2 that retails now does not support it?
It used to be so with the Diamond/touch pro if I recall correctly.
So i'm in the Quad Cities (one of the areas that was recently supposed to get 4G), but so far with my Thunderbolt, I have gotten pretty much nothing. There are a few places I've noticed while driving that it will connect, but it's never for long. When it has connected for any length of time, the speed was pretty low, around 5 meg down which doesn't sound right to me.
I'm in Davenport, which is covered according to their coverage map/list, but i'm not having much luck. Anyone else in the area having similar problems? Does it just take a little time for it to kick in or something?
Any help is appreciated...
Oh ya, I am rooted, running a custom ROM and have tried multiple radios.
Well I even went back to stock just to see if it was the fact that I was rooted and running a custom ROM was the issue. Still nothing so I guess it's just lack of coverage then? Does it normally get better over time?
I think it may be at least a week till it is up and running.
Alright. Thanx a lot for the reply.
I noticed today that my phone seemed to be connecting in more areas than it was at first. The 4G icon will display in the notification bar but the arrows don't light up or anything like they do for 3G. I assume that means no data is being received or sent. Any reason that would be? I'm on baseband 1.48.00.726w_2,0.01.78.0802w_3 if that helps at all...
Moved into a new house last year around the same time my phone at the time, the droid maxx, got kit kat....initially thought kitkat killed battery life on the phone and as a result i eventually sold it and got a g2, tried out a couple other phones as well, but they were smaller battery phones, s5, m8, x etc...ended up staying on a g2 until the note 4. The note 4 battery was so bad i thought i had a defective unit and had verizon swap it...same issuse. I then swapped the note 4 for a turbo and im STILL dead by 5pm even with this things massive battery.
Finally occurred to me, its likely my location since it started with the maxx when i moved here.
Called verizon on it suspecting i may be dead center between two towers and the phones are constanrly switching between them, killing the battery quickly. On the phone with them they had me check the mobile data battery bar for breaks, which i hadnt noticed before because the break color is barely different than the non break color, but WOW, CONSTANT BREAKS throughout the bar.
Verizon says they are i"nvestigating", sending an engineer to my location to test etc, but i have little faith in them so thought i would ask here if anyone knows of a way to resolve this bouncing between towers?
Also, put the phone on my tylt charger last night (it was at 8% and I had already fully charged it again mid-day) around midnight, at 7am it had only managed to get 60% charge due to this issue.
Any thoughts, ideas how to resolve? I already use wifi all the time at home, with no effect on battery (as again, it seems to be the bouncing between towers thats killing it, not lte usage).
I'm 100% convinced its a tower bounce causing this, my 4g LTE signal bounces between 95dbm and 108dbm or so...stays on 4g most of the time, but bounces constantly from tower to tower.
Thanks in advance!
Dang, that must be a pretty heavy power draw. My TYLT gives me the illusion of my turbo charged. Seems faster than a normal charger.
Sent from my XT1254
Try downloading LTE discovery from the play store. It's supposed to lock you on a tower when you're not getting signal, and its worked well to do that for me on multiple devices. I don't know if it will lock to a specific tower though, I feel like radio auto-switching would take precedence. I don't know if just turning off LTE would help either.
I had a Droid Turbo for 1.5 years that got great battery life. I am a power user, and averaged between 4 and 4.5 hrs of SOT in a 16 hour day.
For no good reason, I decided it was time to get a new phone, and I chose the S7e SD 820 model based on the reviews. While the phone is pretty, there were two dealbreakers for me. First, the Edge screen is too sensitive given the way I hold a phone, even when using a case. I'd constantly open apps on the left side of the screen by accident. Or worse, make weird typos in emails. The second, and bigger issue, is mentioned ad nauseum on this forum - the US version has major Android System battery drain that has not been addressed. I spent hours and hours trying to get in touch with someone who could help me at Samsung. I was promised callbacks, fixes, etc.. But when there was no follow through and I'd call back, they acted like nobody had ever reported the problem before. I then tried tweeting Samsung support, and they responded... By telling me that their customer service dept on Twitter has absolutely no way to contact someone who can solve the android system issue. Finally, after calling several times, I got in touch w a US based tier 2 tech support agent, who also told me the issue had never been reported. He had an S7 on hand, picked it up, and noted that there was definitely a problem. He put in a ticket but said it wouldn't be addressed until enough people complained to trip their system. Given the challenges of dealing w Samsung, and my big priority of having a long lasting battery, I finally gave up hope and returned my s7e to Verizon. This is the first time in 20 years of cell phones that I've ever made a return.
I wanted my Droid Turbo back, but unfortunately, I turned that in when I got the S7e. So, I decided to get a DT2. I'd call it a fine phone. Nothing special that differentiated it from the original for me. In fact, battery life for me averaged about 3.5-4 hrs SOT, less than the original. If I'm going to spend $700 on a new phone it has to be significantly better than my previous one in the category that's most important to me, which is battery life. I don't watch much video on my phone, but I definitely use apps intermittently throughout the day, including FB, Instagram, Bumble, TouchDown and Feedly. Since those don't need anything special in terms of graphics, my only goal was to get more device use time than the DT. Since that wasn't happening, I've now purchased a Nexus 6p.
From reading the forums, it sounds like Google is much more responsive to issues because this phone is running stock Android. While the processor is a generation dated from the S7e, I do appreciate that Google will update much faster than Samsung, who barely acknowledged a battery issue affecting 100% of US phones. I've now installed everything on my 6p, and am in the middle of testing it for "normal use" (meaning, how I use the phone, which may or may not reflect the norm). If this phone doesn't get better battery life than the DT, then I'm going to return it, call it a day, and purchase another DT on ebay.
I'm sure for many of you screen pixels, camera and processor speed matter, but I don't watch much video, find almost all cell phone cameras provide pixelated photos, particularly in low light, and I never had any issue opening FB or emails at warp speed on my Turbo. I can't justify getting equal or less battery life for a phone that costs $500 more than the original DT.
Anyway, I'll give an update once I've had a few days with my 6p, but feel free to post your experiences if you've had any of these devices.
You should be able to get at least 6 to 8 hours SOT with the SD820 Edge, just look at this threat and try it. Despite your bad experience so far this S7 should easily obliterate your DT and 6p. It's just a shame 800 bucks doesn't work great straight out of the box like most Exynos do and how it should be. But even Exynos isn't perfect, e.g. my standby drain is slowly creeping upwards from 2% per night on the first day till 4% now, 2 weeks later. Without ever changing a setting. Not complaining though This phone has potential like no other phone in market does at this point in time.
I'd strongly doubt that any phone could average 6+ hrs of SoT unless you're on wifi and using the screen continuously. But again, everyone uses their phones differently. For me, it was the terrible Samsung support that made me throw in the towel. I agree that the phone has potential, but potential is just that. If the people responsible for updating the phone don't pay attention to their customers than the phone will never improve beyond its potential.

After the Oreo update, my s7 active has really sucked. A lot. It overheats, battery drain is through the roof, it lags constantly, the camera takes a solid 20 seconds to respond at times, and it just generally sucks. The problems sometimes seem to be heat related, as it slows down even more when on charge. I'd seen on another forum that flashing the older CP file would fix the heat issue. Anyone have any luck with this? I haven't done much android modding since the days of ICS/JB/KK, before knox and all of that. Would doing this brick me or trip knox? Any alternate suggestions besides ditching the awful carrier AT&T is in favor of a lesser evil that allows me to use a third party phone with WiFi calling or VoLTE support? That's all that's keeping me with ATT branded phones now, as where I live has little 3g reception for an urban area, so having to drop down on calls without VoLTE is a no-go for me.
Thanks guys!
Have you tried doing a hard reset on the phone first? It sounds like you updated to Oreo with all of your junk on it. No wonder it caused so many problems!
There isn't a way to downgrade from Oreo.
No way to downgrade from nougat but as I understand it, isn't it just the boot loader that can't be rolled back?
I'm not sure if what you're proposing is actually compatible but you could always check.
Best way to keep all your bits and pieces in my opinion is Samsung backup.
Just did it myself and I am getting better battery and cell signal than I ever have! On a two+ year old phone!!
I just got 4 God damn days of light use between charges!

Sorry, been away for a few days. I have done a reset and it works alright for a day or two then back to total suckage. I managed to drop 55% battery in a matter of two hours this afternoon with moderate use. Bright side, it was cold outside, so I got a nice hand warmer. What did you try? Flashing the older CP/CSC?
I was under the impression that the older OS wouldn't work with newer bootloader.

Yeah, I've done two hard resets so far. No luck, but I'm backing it up again for one more shot.

Before doing anything drastic like attempting to flash CSC from a previous version, have you tried clean flashing the following rom in latest modified Odin including all relevant wipes?
G891AUCS4CRJ1_CL13639069_QB20030093_REV02_user_low_ship_MULTI_CERT_meta
My original comments were more towards the fact that radio behaviour on this rom has been totally different for me than every other version I've had on the device, as a result I seem to be getting much better battery life. I'm not sure what CSC it comes with, but it is certainly acting in a different fashion to all previous versions: Lots more time with 4G icon, less with LTE. Far more readily jumping over to 3G when the signal is stronger etc.
After charging my device is still getting hot, but not during general use. I think my battery is just dying a slow death - it only has 3000mah capacity now. A real shame that it isn't replaceable without defeating the waterproofing.
If the Sonim XP8 were a little bit better specced I would buy one in a heartbeat.
Nice, I'll give that one a shot. I was going to flash a clean install of CRJ1 tomorrow after it downloaded. Don't have very fast internet here. I appreciate the input!!!
If it weren't for AT&T restricting VoLTE to their branded phones, I'd jump ship to oneplus or anything in the pixel lineup. Or the LG g7. Or literally any third party phone that wouldn't force botched updates and bloatware down my throat constantly and re-enable crap I've disabled with every update. But where I work has great LTE signal, very very little 3g/HSPA+, so not having VoLTE isn't an option. Same for wifi calling where my parents live, poor signal so no use having the phone when I visit if I can't use wifi for calls/texts.
Currently using my old g5. Whew. I forgot that this thing would fry eggs with light use. But at least the battery is replaceable. Tried replacing my aging S7 active battery on my first one. Four days later the bottom half of the screen died. Oops.
