I have a rooted Nook Simple Touch running the 1.2.1 firmware since ~2015 and it has been a while since I had not need to use the internet/wifi and because of that I missed all the news about the firmware update to support the secure TLS stuff.
Today, I tried to install additional dictionaries from the settings menu, but it stays at "connecting" forever and I think it is because of the outdated firmware.
I read the post on this forum and noticed that the update method doesn't work for rooted devices and the only alternative is to restore a stock image, update the firmware and then root it again. (https://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-touch/general/nst-nstg-fw-1-2-2-update-t3785566)
But, since I don't remember how I rooted it and the other customization I did, I think I'll probably miss something and then it is not worth doing it.
Then, I wanted to ask if someone has the stock files for the dictionaries to share (preferably the German and Spanish ones), and if just copying them to `/system/media/reference` will be enough to make the Nook think they were installed or would I need to do something else?

If you have a NST with 1.2.2 firmware (the newest one (2018) that can access the internet) , can you check if Settings > Reader > Dictionaries is available and if you can download the other dictionaries.
And If it is not too much trouble, can you download them and then extract the files and upload them.

Wait, how does that work?! I've never seen that option in Settings. Are we really talking about the NST? I know the Glowlight model (as opposed to the NST Glowlight) has the option to download other dictionaries, but I don't think the NST versions of the hardware ever did.

I confirmed that mine is indeed a Simple Touch and its model number is BNRV300, but I don't know if there is more than one NST model.
I have a NST *without* the glowlight, and I can see it on Settings > Reader > Manage Dictionaries, and I can also access it when I search a word while reading by clicking on a button labelled "Change Dictionaries."
Someone (Renate NST???) mentioned that the extra dictionaries are stored in a different folder, but I'm not sure if she is talking about the official dictionaries or some custom ones that use some extra software.
@nmyshkin, I hadn't thought that most users wouldn't know about the other dictionaries, and after thinking about, I noticed that I only found them by chance.

OK, but there is still much to be sorted out. I have attached a screenshot of the stock 1.2.2 Settings>Reader (no dictionary sub-level) below. It is all I have ever seen in many years of using the NST on FW 1.2.1 and 1.2.2. If I had seen what you are describing I would have tried to include it in my expanded Nook Settings app. But there is nothing else. No way to go to another screen, etc.
So....what does your device display in the "About Your Nook" section? It doesn't seem possible that it's US firmware. I can understand dictionary options in the UK firmware because maybe some would cross the Channel, but not the US firmware.

If that's it, you're out of luck unless you can find someone who actually installed these dictionaries because with FW 1.2.1 the difference between the UK and US firmware was eliminated, and you can't do anything vis-a-vis B&N with FW 1.2.1 any longer.

Mine has two entries inside Reader, the first one to configure the buttons as in your screenshot, and the one to manage the dictionaries.

It has some info about the account registered, the MAC address and Serial number, and the info about the model/firmware only have:
Software version -> 1.2.1
Model Number -> BNRV300
But it doesn't say anything about it being the US or UK version.
I think it is the UK since I have the Oxford dictionary named as `ox_en_GB.db` inside the dictionary folder.
When I checked the update zip on B&N site it had different files, which I think refer to the Merriam-Webster for the US version.

It has been too long for me to remember exactly what I did, but I think I hadn't flashed a custom ROM because I only wanted to root it to install some random apk to read manga and I hadn't modified the ones for epubs.

I think so, too, but I want to check the 1.2.1 UK update zip (the final UK only version) and see what's inside. If that's where the difference is, then those dictionaries are probably long gone. Even if one were to install the Settings app from the UK version, the URLs for fetching the dictionaries would likely point to non-existent UK servers that B&N shut down long ago.
It would be interesting to know if the dictionary format changed from the NST to the "Glowlight" model (still not sure where in the lineup that one is...they really should have been more careful with their model naming). A Google search on Nooks and dictionaries yields a few hits that show something similar to what you are describing (I guess) but for the "Glowlight" model, not the NST. Since there would be some of those still out there, those would be the people to find--IF the dictionary format is the same.
Edit: yes, it's UK firmware. I took a look at the UserGuide from the 1.2.1 UK update zip. When the dictionary is in use (i.e., when you look up a word while reading) it shows an option to "change dictionaries". That is not present in the US firmware. Also, although there is no picture shown, it does mention the "Manage Dictionaries" option from Settings>Reader. It sounds a lot like what I read about the "Glowlight" model, probably looks the same too. So some non-English dictionaries still exist and are available to "Glowlight" owners. Whether their format is compatible with the NST is another question. You need to find an owner of the correct (rooted) model to find out, or get really lucky and find someone who kept their UK NST intact and downloaded a whole bunch of dictionaries in the past before B&N killed the servers there.
The old NST dictionaries were in the format of an SQLite database where the entries were zip files of HTML for each word.
This (overblown) implementation would have allowed images in addition to text for an entry.
I made a separate implementation that used dictionaries that were an SQLite database with deflate of HTML for each word.
That reduced size and complexity a bit.
I don't use the stock reader and I've given up on any usage that requires selecting text with your finger in a reader.
I have a separate application (Lookup.apk) that accesses dictionaries.
(Hmm, looking at this, I realize it needs some more attention.)
I also have a few dictionaries in the new format.
I'm not even sure if the new stock 5.0 even has dictionaries anymore.
If someone knows and can find the actual dictionary, please post it. Erm, it does.

i bought an htc dream/g1 from ebay new. the catch is that it's in chinese (didn't know this when i bought it). i've set it to english, but the market place, among some other system dialogues are still in chinese. i've managed to log into my google account by guessing, but i'm getting error messages i can't read, and the whole market interface is in chinese.
so i CAN'T use the android market to download a file manager, or download anything at all (which seems to be required in order to root it). i can mount the sd card and access it in windows.
what i really want to do is just delete everything on there, os and all, and start from scratch (the same way i could with an iphone). the most important thing is that it be in english. secondly that it run smoothly. after that it would be nice if it could be a sense ui rom, but that is not required, i guess.
please, any help at all would be appreciated! i'm new to android and i can't figure all these issues out at once and in mandarin.
I would suggest downgrading to RC29 or RC7, but those are US and UK firmwares. What firmware version is it? it would be useful for us to have all the information in Settings > About. If it's on 1.5 you should be able to use the 'flashrec' method, but I guess that will ake some trial and error.
I have a Nook Simple Touch Glowlight with software verion 1.1.5. All the information that I've been able to Google is for 1.1.2, in fact that is the version that I still see on the B&N website.
I _think_ that I have found a suitable way to root the device with Nooter but I would like to know how to confirm that in fact this is the right project for my software version. I'm sorry that I cannot post a link to the Nooter project, but I have less than 10 posts.

There are at least two methods that work with the Glowworm.
You should not use any method until after you have
- made a noogie disk
- booted from it
- backed up your device
- restored that backup to a test disk (a 2 gig or larger microSD card, for instance) and confirmed that the test results in a disk that has 8 partitions.
Many people have made the backup but not tested it; when they tried to restore, they did bad to fatal things to their devices. A very common failure on restore seems to be only getting one partition restored and blowing out the other partitions.
I don't know if the stuff that eded is working on has come to fruition yet - he was looking at building a tool that could detect whether it was run on an NST or NSTG and root appropriately to the device.
The two routes I know work are:
- glownooter, the nooter project tool, includes Google apps and market support
- tinynoot, pasted together from various tools, gives you minimal root without google apps and with amazon appstore. Will work with either NST or NSTG because it's approach is so minimalist.

In any case, what I am most concerned about is getting the right version of the rooting software for my device. I see that Nook devices have different firmware and that certain tools only work with certain firmware versions. I see no mention of my firmware version in any tools' websites, hence my apprehension.

I saw your request on that and I think one of the issues here is that so many folks use Windows exclusively, and the backup process is so easy on linux that trying to tell people how to do it in Windows is like jabbing yourself in the eye with a stick, given that linux is free, vmware player is free, and linux can be installed and used for this job entirely in vmware player. On the other side of the coin, if you know nothing of linux, even using dd correctly will be a challenge since there's a pretty steep learning curve behind setting up a new OS successfully just to be able to get backups off an 80-130 dollar device.
In your case: as of now, there is only one firmware release for the glowlight. This is why the folks with the tools aren't mentioning it, aside from 'this is for a glowlight.'
I didn't mention it, but I also use Linux at home (Kubuntu, like Ubuntu but with a better UI). So many people are now using Ubuntu that I find it surprising that the instructions even bother mentioning the OSes for which the operation is as difficult as you say. I remember when doing things in Linux was hard and Windows was easy, and at that time Linux was hardly ever mentioned!
In your case: as of now, there is only one firmware release for the glowlight. This is why the folks with the tools aren't mentioning it, aside from 'this is for a glowlight.'

ok, so for you the backup process is:
- make the noogie disk
- put it into your device
- power cycle your device
- when it boots to "rooted forever," connect the USB cable to your linux box
- once the linux box mounts the NSTG as storage, pay attention to which device it is mounting it at. Assuming it's sdX:
- backup with dd if=/dev/sdX of=backup.img bs=1M
When that's done, disconnect your NSTG, throw media of some sort, larger than 2G, onto your box and test your restore with
dd if=backup.img of=/dev/sdY bs=1M
Once that's done, do an
fdisk /dev/sdY
and a
p to print the partition table.
You should have 8 partitions (and your backup.img file should be just under 2 gig.)
Hack away; if you ever need to restore, you can just drop the virgin image back on.
I take a snapshot like this of my device every so often since remembering how I got to whatever config I liked is harder than just backing it up.

The process was simple. I do have an issue where I need to install a Hebrew font but ES File Manager doesn't seem to see the root folders. I'm having a hard time googling my way out of this one, bu all the other little issues were fairly simple.
One issue that I will mention that was hard to solve was the inability to perform searches in the Market. This page helped me resolve that issue:

I just figured out that the file manager has to have Root permissions enabled. I've enabled it and added some fonts to /system/fonts but I still cannot get Hebrew text to display on this device. All I get are the typical rectangles instead of characters. Any ideas about how to proceed?

1. I made this exact same mistake yesterday and I ended up with a bad backup.
2. My Nook Simple Touch (1.1.2) is now not working because I wiped ALL the partitions before attempted to restore the backup (which I didnt know was bad at the time)
3. Please help me restore the Nook back to factory or any working state. Are there any restorable backup images that can be downloaded online?
p.s. I have tried touchnooter and installed touchformatv2 but all I get now is a Read Forever load screen.
Please Please Help Me Im so sad (I know this is down to carelessness on my part but I really need help)

Not sure how to get hebrew working. One assumes that in addition to the characters, you need it to right to left? If it's the latter, I know there was a thread discussing doing this with Arabic, and I'm not sure how that turned out. You can also google around for folks looking at this on, I think, mobilereads.

Actually, I think that I just need the fonts (or at least that would be a great first step). I put fonts with Hebrew glyphs in /system/fonts (using ES File Explorer in Root mode) but even after a restart it does not find the fonts (i.e. Hebrew text still shows as rectangles). I will fight with it some more in the coming days, if I don't succeed I will start a new, concise thread on the topic. There are plenty of Google posts on the subject, but all of the ones that I have seen (not Nook-specific) suggest that dropping the fonts is /system/fonts should be enough. Perhaps it is a permissions issue, I'll see if I can SSH into the device to see permissions.

Thank you. It seems that those posts are Windows-centric summerizations of information found here at XDA-developers. The root is pretty much the process that I used, but from the guide right here which has Linux directions as well.
By the way, the-ebook-reader site is often not responding for me. Is it just for me, or does everyone have trouble with that site?

UK glowlight ships with 1.2.0. Use tinynooter to root this. You may have issues installing apps atm though but you will get the browser at least.

Yesterday I just got my new NST with firmware 1.2.0 and wanted to root it. But all instructions i found were about 1.1.X firmware versions. So i decided to downgrade my firmware( and didn't make a backup of it before formatting the flash ROM. So now my Nook doesn't starts with old versions of firmware and i can't find the image with 1.2.0 firmware. Does anyone can hepl me and share it with me, please?

I got mine and it was at 1.0.x and I upgraded it straight to 1.2.0. Was enjoying it as an ereader and then realized I could root it and have some fun so I made a backup of my device but it was of a 1.2.0 image so I used CWM and flashed it to 1.1.0 to make rooting easier. Tinynoot did work for me on 1.2.0 but I wanted gapps and found it easier to go back to 1.1.0.
I guess this is a good place for all things 1.2
I updated to 1.2 but I've bashed so much stuff on mine that I had problems.
I've deleted all the B&N download and cloud stuff.
Settings.apk tries to "check-in" constantly.
I'm going to see if I can get the some of the stock Eclair stuff working.
Mixing up different sources of stuff requires re-signing.

Some surprises with the 1.2 update.
If you actually read a book on it you'll notice that the screen update has been changed somehow.
It's hard to put a finger on it, but the image "morphs" going from one page to another.
There is still the complete refresh every n pages (where n=6 by default, but can be configured).
I think that it is an improvement.
The EpdController code (eInk display interface) has been rewritten which breaks some previous user code.
EpdController is no longer static.

the US version doesn't have a place for the user to select language / locale, but the International build does (some on this forum refer to it as the UK Nook)
In the US Nook, you can select language/locale by opening NookColorTools > Settings >Locale
I got my first ereader, a lightly used NST and am thoroughly delighted with how much easier it is to read than on my phone or laptop. I was hoping to remove some of the bloatware as all my books are sideloaded using Calibre, but my version is 1.2.2. I couldn't find any reference to this new version on the Nookmanager thread. Can I still root it with this version?
Additionally, I am finding it hard to organise and find my EPUBs on it. The shelf function requires manual selection, which will take a while for a lot of books. At the moment I'm just keeping 5-10 books at a time of what I'm actively reading, but ideally I'd like to have my whole collection on there. If I were to root it, are there any library apps which would group the books by tags? A bit like how Calibre does it?
If not, what workarounds have people with large collections on the NST used?

1.2.2?! Are you sure it's an actual NST? There is nothing past 1.2.1 for the NST that I know. Look under Settings>Device Info>About Your Nook. The model number of the NST is BNRV300.

Now that you mention it, I can't find the 1.2.2. on the B&N software updates section of their website, but found a reference to it on another forum where a user says their NSTG updated to it automatically when on wifi this January.
Should I be worried?

I don't know anything about software version 1.2.2. However, if you would like to try rooting it, I would start with this thread.
Minimal rooting - back to basics. If you can get a minimal root with those instructions, the other more "advanced" (or not) rooting tools should also work.

I would not worry. In a pinch you could do a factory reset and return to the original firmware which is not 1.2.2 I'm sure. Then you could use the 1.2.1 update zip to get it ready for NookManager. If indeed B&N is pushing an update (I've not seen it and have used WiFi regularly) you can avoid WiFi until you've rooted with NM. If there is some kind of update it may involve security issues for those purchasing B&N books with their devices. That would explain why I have not seen it.

After creating a back up I attempted to root with NM and in the final screen everything had positive remarks except 'PackageInstaller not modified' and 'ModManager not available for 1.2.2'. Strangely, on the NM main menu, it still says the system is 1.2.2.
I'm not sure if I'm missing something. I'll try factory reset again, but I'm not sure how else to get back to 1.2.1

There are two distinct "factory" operations. The one you describe just deletes user info and settings.
The other one reimages the device from a hidden and protected factory image--that won't be 1.2.2. That's the one you want. One way to get there is by eight failed boot attempts. That's very tedious. There is another way involving holding one of the buttons down during boot. Let me see if I can find it.
Edit: power down. Power up and as soon as you get anything on the screen press and hold the two bottom buttons until the factory restore dialog appears.

Ah, now I understand, I didn't realise there were two different options. Thank you for this.
Unfortunately it has lead to something very strange: I held the two bottom buttons on restart, went through both prompts confirming if I want to factory reset. It went through the process and at the selecting WiFi screen I restarted to boot to NM which still says the system is 1.2.2! Could it be that the forced update to 1.2.2 also wrote over the protected factory image?
Edit: I found these instructions and am keeping my fingers crossed they work to get 1.2.1 back

Thank you so very much for your help. 1.2.1 was installed successfully and rooting worked a breeze!
I found an old version of ES Explorer on here and I'm now just adding '.disable' to the apks as recommended on another thread here to optimise the NST.

I've been waiting around for more than a week for my second "new" NST to update. It finally did so yesterday. The update has been mentioned on the Mobileread forums and one XDA member has already asked about rooting it so I thought I'd see what I could learn. You apparently won't learn anything from B&N as they either respond as if this is something that should not happen (so beware!) or they say it provides minor enhancements. There is no notice of the update on their cobweb-ridden website for the NST, no opportunity to do a manual update. It takes about a week of WiFi on all the time to catch the rolling push.
Edit: B&N has since posted the update zip on their website. For users with non-US firmwares, I recommend flashing US 1.2.1 firmware (see https://sites.google.com/site/xcdguides/nook/nookB&N). You cannot register 1.2.1 but you can update it before registering. At the "welcome" screen connect the device to your PC and transfer the update zip from B&N. Let the device sleep and it will do the update. Then you can register if you desire.
Edit: The time for OTA updates is past and I'm not sure if devices still running 1.2.1 will act up in any way. Certainly you won't be able to contact B&N servers and this could lead to connection error messages when WiFi is turned on.
What's new?
I can't claim to have done a thorough shakedown but there is no obvious change in the device on FW 1.2.2. I suspect this is a security update to keep the devices in line with new security measures on B&N servers so that owners can still spend money at B&N via the devices But I was curious to see if the cacerts.bks file had been changed since some certificates have already failed (a few of which have been fixed already by @tshoulihane to keep the Kindle app working). No joy there--not that I was surprised. B&N doesn't need cacerts to ensure correct negotiation with their servers via their own apps. Everything seems exactly the same.
To update or not to update
If, like me, you rooted your device earlier with NookManager, the update will fail and your device will spontaneously reboot. This behavior (occurring every Sunday morning as I listened to NPR on the TuneIn app) is what lead me to the conclusion that it was the update process. If you don't give a hoot about the update but you're not keen on having your device reboot on a whim, here is a fix: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34433959&postcount=3
Edit: well, that seemed to work at first, but then the weekly reboots began until I finally updated.
I don't know about other rooting methods potentially interfering with the update process.
If you just must have the update, it is likely you will need to restore your device to stock, re-register it, and leave WiFi on for a week or so until the update occurs (I left mine on the Library screen so I would know when a reboot--taking you to Home--occurred).
Edit: at this point, you will have to manually download the 1.2.2 update zip from B&N and manually install it on your device. This will require you to invoke a factory re-image as the update will not work on a rooted device. A NookManager card (even an old one) can be used to start the factory reset. Once that's done and you're at the "Welcome" screen, connect your device to your PC and drag the 1.2.2 update zip to the "Nook" drive. Let the device sleep. Come back in awhile and see if the update zip is still visible on the "Nook" drive. If it's gone, the update has been done. Now for rooting.....
Can I root it?
The short answer is "yes".
NookManager is versatile and wonderful, but it does have a bit of dust on it by now. I plan to look into that and start another thread. For now, there are two files which need to be edited in order to use it successfully with FW 1.2.2. You'll want Notepad++ or similar.
Prepare the NookManager card as described in its thread. Examine the prepared card in your PC. You'll see one partition:
NookManager
In that partition find the folder "scripts". You need to edit these two files:
install_nookmods
install_old_installer
In both files the change is the same. Near the top of the file you will find this line:

You want to change it to look like this:

Not sure how touchy spaces, etc., are, but try to follow what's already there. Save the files and you're good to go.

If it's not booting off the card then one or more of the files on the card must be damaged. Rather than trying to figure it out, it would be easier to just make a new card (try formatting your old one and writing the image again). I wouldn't even make the changes needed for 1.2.2 until you establish whether the card boots. You don't have to use NookManager, just see if it will boot and then exit if it does. Then you can make the needed changes and try again. If it doesn't boot after you've done the minimal edits, then somehow the card has been mishandled. Be sure to eject the card safely from your PC.

Thanks, I have tried multiple times (Format and reload) but till it does not boot into sdcard. I will try once again from scratch in the weekend.

Its works perfectly, i rooted my nook simple one touch with update 1.2.2
I am in the UK and have a Nook Simple Touch Glow-light. It was on f/w version 1.2.1 and would not connect to the internet. I downloaded the nook_1_2_update.zip from the USA B&N site at copied it to the Nook using the USB connection from my PC. However it would not update to 1.2.2, the zip file just disappears.
I then used the excellent Nook Region Changer, and changed the Nook to USA region. I again wrote the nook_1_2_update.zip file to the Nook using the USB connection, and after the next wake up cycle on my nook it updated to 1.2.2 and allowed me to register on the USA B&N website and browse books, etc, but not do any social media things, and also I cannot buy books or download free ones as I do not have a USA home address, which is required.
I again used Nook Region Changer and put my nook back to UK version, but this process 'lost' the 1.2.2 update so I am back to square one.
Apparently the two firmware updates to move a USA NST/G to FW 1.2.2 (downloaded from USA B&N site) and the one to ove a UK NST/G to 1.2.2 (downloaded from the now defunct UK B&N website) are different and incompatible.
My questions is "Does anyone have a copy of the UK version of the nook_1_2_update.zip file please?"

There will never be another update other than the US one you have already tried. I think you may be expecting too much from the device at this point. A made-up USA address might be of some use, but I doubt it. Even with US firmware from the US I could never get the Google stuff to work and I just assume that B&N never cared much about updating URLs and APIs for the social media stuff and just wanted to be sure US customers could still purchase books. But that's my somewhat cynical take.
Anyway, you can always go back to US 1.2.2 and then delete ALL the B&N stuff and build your own reader if that suits you. See here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-touch/general/nst-g-removing-bn-apps-t3972941

Faulty? What happens?
Did you remember to do a factory reset before trying the update? You cannot update a rooted device with that zip.

I was having this exact problem but I couldn't use the Nook Region Changer because step #4 is to reset the device which I couldn't do because it couldn't connect to the internet (RAGE!!!). I have spent days trying to sort this out it's absolutely ridiculous.
I have finally found this page: https://heeed.net/resetting-a-nook-simple-touch/ which has helped me to reset it to factory settings and get it working to a basic level again without being registered.
I'm furious really that B&N won't give us a working update so we can at least use Wifi on our devices, WTF?! Disgusting customer service! Anyway, hope that link helps someone else!
