Hi,
At the moment I'm looking for a new tablet for me and my wife. I've made my pick (Tab S5e 128 GB), but my wife wants something lighter, as most she'll do on it is read or play HayDay.
She has her mind set on a Tab A, but there are several at the moment, 10.1, 10.5,...
Requirements for a wifi only tab A:
Lineage or other custom rom support
Snapdragon CPU
For the rest no requirements, but I thing a 64 Gb version is a tad more future proof. The Exynos CPU is a nice one, but hardly supported by custom rom builders. (I tried for the Tab S2, luckily @ripee and @tripLr took over)
Which one is which, is the 2019 version a better option then the older ones,... To many Tab A models. (at least the S series are numbered)

Why would she possibly need 64gb for what you described? The SM-510 with 32gb is way more than enough to do what she wants. I have mine rooted with a custom Lineage 16 ROM and a 17 one is "in the works", just waiting for a few bugs to be solved. Yes, there may be more custom ROMs for Snapdragon SoCs, but that is just because they've been around longer. I also have a 2016 SM-t580 with an Exynos SoC and I have 6 different Android 10 ROMs on it and I don't have them all.
IMO, unless you are watching 4k movies or are an avid "gamer", there should be no reason to need more than 32gb of internal storage when you can always add a 256gb SD card. And, personally, I'd never use a 10" tablet for either of those activities
Added Note: I don't consider people who enjoy a pleasant time with Hay Day to be "avid gamers". That app works quite well on my old 2016, 16gb Tab A.

Hi Lewmur,
Could you offer a quick comment on the recent SM-510 vs the 2016 SM-T 580? Love my 580, does most all of what I need well, but I'm thinking the RAM's too low at 2GB. Just started looking around and thought the 510 might be a better 'daily driver'. And, I think your advice to the OP was spot on.
Cheers! :highfive:

To be honest, I don't use either tablet to do anything that stretches their capability. The battery life on my 510 seems better, but then again, its is new and the 580 is three years old. The Antutu benchmark on the 510 is much better at 113745 as opposed to the 580 at 83259. Bottom line, if I had to pay retail for a 510 to upgrade from a 580, I wouldn't do it. I bought my two 510s for $80 and $50 including shipping. They were both in like new condition but with one catch. They are "Not for Sale" models with only 2gb and 16gb. The "Not for Sale" doesn't mean they are not legit. They both "registered" with Samsung without a problem. They just couldn't be sold "retail" and don't include a warranty.
edit: For an 80 yr old with shaky hands, the 510 does take a much better photo.

Hello guys
I want to buy the tab 4 t230 mainly for reading pdf files
is it a good tablet and how about its performance ? I don't want it to be all laggy
thanks for your help
I don't know about the 230, but I have the 330 model and reading PDF files, and any other sort of document is a overall good experience for me. One could make the argument that bigger is better, but for me having the 8" model in horizontal or even vertical layout has worked quite well when it came to looking at notes, editing documents or even reading textbooks for college lectures/classes. I haven't noticed any lag when it came to just looking at a file, only when it came to running graphics intensive games.
(Quick summary) I use the 8" tablet daily and love it. recently, I purchased two textbooks from the play store and reading them and other PDF files work perfectly. :good:
-still it's always good to browse around.
Update: Before I made the purchase on the 8" model I read around that if you have a little bit extra it was a good idea to buy the 8" model over the 7" cause of the different processors inside. So it's all about how much you're willing to spend.

Edit. I would not buy the 7...
I bought the 8 and the below is for the 8...sorry. I forgot to mention that.
The tab in itself is decent, but with samsung pushy BS Apps the tab is slower...
However, should you buy the tab >> Root device with Towel root >> Freeze / uninstall all bloatware >> Install nova launcher >> Disable animations system wide >> Move larger apps to SD >> Presto = You've got a good tab!
Samsung software is not needed whatsoever. You can get a huge performance advantage by removing bloatwares and providing near android stock performance with nova launcher and animations disabled.
srsly no, i am still unable to root it, for the same price i would suggest a nexus 7
I rooted it out of the box a night or two ago. Just got it.
Same here, root capabilities were available a few weeks to a month after it was available for purchase back in june. I bought my tablet back in May when it first came out. However, I would still agree that a nexus 7 would be a good purchase if you just want to use a tablet for reading PDFs. Actually the Nexus 7 2013 edition is on sale for $159 on Ebay. The Nexus is still Googles current-gen device as of now and has many accessories and what not available, while it took months before I could even buy a cheap case for this tablet ( Better cases and accessories are out now, just not a plethora made specifically for the Tab4).

What is your device model? My tab is the 8 inch one. The 8 and 10 have similar specs and processor whereas the 7" tab has a marvel based processor and thus is different methodology to root.
Also, Yes I did update to latest firmware on my tab. Opened the box, ran updates, and rooted all about 3 days ago.

thx for replying, mine is the 7 inch SM-T230, guess i will wait awhile
I do too know if I am speaking out of place, but can you return it and get the 8? Fr9. What is love ready Modders are having issues with the 7. The 8 and 10 are where it's at. I believe the 7 will always be sluggish.

yeah its a gift from the telephone company, if i get to pick i prolly will go with the 10 inch one, or the new sony z3tc
Ah, you might be out of luck until they can find a better root method for the marvel processor in your model..
Thiugh, reportedly if you go to the towel root thread it has worked for 7 inch users.
Hi,
I want to buy a new tablet 10 inch and this note seems perfect for me since I study at the university. But I have some doubt:
1. I read that the version with snapdragon works best, but for me it would be fine also Wi-Fi only version, do not ever insert the card, it's worth it to spend at least 100 € extra just to get the better processor?
2. In the reviews I've seen with Android 4.3, the lag is not missing at all, the situation has improved with the upgrade to Kitkat? Also do you think will be upgraded to Lollipop?
3. I would need to connect it to the TV with HDMI, what kind of connection you can do with this tablet?
Thank you all in advance!
@Murtagh92 Mate I wouldn't buy this just yet ... there is a new Note 10.1 2015 in the works ... My guess would be in a couple of months it will get announced. It will have typical better Processor and screen and the WiFi version will probably the same as the 2014 LTE.
1. I would just be patient if possible - If you need it asap then the WiFi Note 10.1 2014 is fast enough I believe and pretty cheap at the min.
2. Yeah I am 100% positive the Note 2014 will get Lollipop although it will be a bit of a wait LOL. But I find KitKat prettt fast.
3. This adaptor will do the trick ... http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1&tag=viglink20238-20
Thank you, very kind.
I'm participating in an auction. It's a lte version, buyed in january with 2 years of warranty, original cover and 64 microsd, I will offer up to 350, otherwise I will expect the 2015 version.
Yes please don't buy the note 10.1 2014.. Lags like crazy, touch screen is soo unresponsive, cheap feel(doesn't feel like $550), but performance wise its king..
Sent from my SM-T800 using XDA Free mobile app
I have the Tmobile version and it works great. No lag. Haven't had any problems with it. The only things I don't like are the placement of the charging port and the auto brightness function which must be a Samsung tablet issue cause it works fine on the Sasung phones I have. By issue, I mean that with auto brightness checked, the screen is really dim even in very bright light so I just adjust it manually.
I think I will wait 2015 edition. Unless I find a good deal for the lte version.
I will sell you mine...if interested. Pm me if you want.

Chromecast works perfectly with this table. Plug it into your hdmi port of your tv. You do need to be on the same wifi network. I use it all the time.
I've thoroughly enjoyed my tablet so far. With the aid of some talented developers, this tablet has picked up quite a bit of speed and stability! And currently on TigerDirect it's going to $400

Ive had mine about 8 months and it's been fantastic.
Little bit of menu lag before kit kat but now its 100%.
Love the official flip case with it also and a big sd card.
I bought a P605! It's fantastic! Now I am not sure if I need to make root or change rom.
Just root will do. With kitkat u will have 2.7gb ram 400mb more ram than the 4.3.
with root u can use app like greenify and tb to remofe craps. I have successfully rooted by flashing nee kernel and then towel root and then flash back my curre kernel which is cnj1 without tripping knox or void my holy warranty.
2014 edition rocks.
U wait and get 2015 edition, you will pay alot more. Hv had mine for a month now w kitkat wifi edition 2014 and thoroughly enjoy it....But one thing to note(get it?) with samsung is that they cannot keep their devices up to date at the same rate as their development...so anything in the past gets left behind. Example: 4.4.4 kitkat update is here for tmobile but not wifi edition which is samsung only.
new to android tv and looking at these 2 boxes. it doesn't seem like many have an official website? what box would have better support for fixes, firmware, and or just overall what one is better??
looking on gearbest and the price is within $2. i'm open to other suggestions also in the same price range.
RK8 or M8s

hey, i dont know much about the firmware updates and things but ive had the rk8 for two weeks now and i love it. it has a RK3368 chipset, octa-core cpu, 2gb ram, and 8gb rom. before this I had the M8s and that works like a beauty too the only reason that I got the RK8 was to test out the faster processor. But as far as the MXIII-g, Ive never owned one so I can't rate it.
Hi everyone! I'm not new here on XDA, but i'm new into Windows 10 "mobile" handsets. I've seen a lot of review about several differen models but haven't find yet the perfect one for me. I used to do my everyday tasks with a Galaxy tab S2 (2015) then it broke in a non fixable way. I've decided to change and try with a Windows tablet to see how feels a pc like experience handled. Actually i don't have (and don't want to) a lot of money to invest in a similar product, but i can afford max a 250/300€ device. I know i can't expect a Surface performance for that price, but i just need it to view some streaming movies, surf the web and mainly use Office products to study. Anyway i'm here to ask if you can help me and suggest some of the best or what you think may be the best tablets out there. If may help you, i'll write down some of the key point i wish to have:
- A decent soc/good ram: Again, i know i can't expect much...not even thinking on top performance, but i'll be fine if i'll have a product that doesn't stuck while i'm using it. Otherwise would become too frustrating.
- 8-12 inchs: Preferibly 10, but anything above or below would be fine.
- No dual boot: May reduce storage since i don't mind to use anything than Windows. Really don't need a dual os.
- Brand: I'm open to everything. Really don't mind about the brand (even if it will be chinese) as it respects the above "expectations".
In conclusion, i don't need a "top" product and i'm aware that i can't pretend too much for the budget, but i just need a decent product to accomplish my everyday tasks, nothing more. I repeat, i'm a student so Microsoft Office will be the main use of this tablet, beside web and netflix or similar. I could use a laptop, i know...but i prefer to have something i can carry easily wherever i go. I'd really apprecciate any advice and/or personal experience. Thank you.
I guess that no one knows that...or simoly it doesn't exist. Well, this discussion can be closed then
tablets are alwayys laggy, even if theyre not at first. browse sites for few days or install some apps and it will start lagging. my fatherbought tablet and doesnt use it at all cuz its so laggy and broken
older used Surface Pro? I'm not even sure what other options there are, that is the only one I ever see.
I Like my Odys Wintab Ares 9.
It still lives after 3 years.. I used it a couple of times at work for a couple of months because the chefs thought Lenovo is good for a Technician too use... You just have too look angry at Lenovo and the Touchscreen cracks !
On my Odys I now need a new screenprotector, it is as if its build by HTC.. You can let it fall, bump against walls and use it in light rain..
And the price was 159€ ..
The only negativ is that it has a storage of only 32GB.. but I have a 128GB SDXC in it..
With a decent bluetooth keyboard and cheap bluetooth Microsoft mouse I prefer it over the too expensive Surface or Lenovo Tablets.. For the difference in Price I bought a Acer Aspire Laptop and took my girlfriend for a fancy diner..
I just got the HP Pro Tablet 608 G1, and it's really snappy. Just updated it to 20H2 and it's even better. Got it brand new on eBay with Miracast/usb/hdmi dock for $89.

Only 2 GB of RAM? That's not gonna get very far with W10...

3. Teclast X4

I have the enterprise edition with 4GB ram. Got it off eBay NIB for $80.
It has a bunch of enterprise-only features which make it extremely snappy -- like bios editing, rom kitchen, driver customization, and enterprise-only firmware from chip manufactures like Hynix... to name just a few.
So, it isn't low-end by any means. Even came with a USB/ethernet/hdmi/miracast docking station. Found the HP Enterprise Catalog price list from years ago, and it was originally $1,049.
I would recommend a Microsoft surfaces pro 7
Seems like a simple enough question but I've been having a really difficult time trying to gain traction about information on this tablet or any tablet.
Yes. i've owned one since is was released last year but there is NOTHING on xda. Even though it's new and fairly speedy, no one has worked on an ROM for this. I wanted to unlock and root it so I can use it on another ISP/Mobile.

It's very very frustrating, there seems to be very little support for it. Do you know if you can charge while having a thumb drive hooked up? Like OTG style? I have purchased 2 tablets so far and neither have this capabilities. I don't want to be purchasing a third with the same result

Hi, thnx for the useful info. Did you have trouble getting the unlock code from at&t? Where did you enter that code? A specific app on the at&t rom I'm guessing?
Getting a sprint version of this device, but want to use it t-mobile. Have read that just factory reset device and use odin to flash other firmware would work, does that sound feasible to you? I'm kind of doubting that but have no idea really.
It used to be flashing diff rom would sim unlock, but not anymore I don't think.
thnx for taking the time, so little info for this available.
cheers
No problem with at&t, although i had to impersonate a US location. Start here: https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/unlockstep1
Like I said, vendor unlock, install odin on your pc, use odin to install the desired firmware you downloaded.
The firmware should boot up, but maybe the radio bands are different between the two isp's? and therefore the LTE part of the tablet may not work. i don't care since I don't install a sim card, just use it on wifi.

How is the speed/lag? This tablet is mega slow, but I was wondering if I loaded different firmware (currently on AT&T) that it might help, since it can't be rooted.
My 8-yr old rooted Galaxy Tab S 8.4 is better than this thing, but alas a few apps won't run on 32-bit architecture. I think I will relegate this AT&T "brick" to my exercise bike for an entertainment interface.

Meh - no better. It is pretty ridiculous - I was very happy with my 2015 Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 - but it started crashing all the time. This one is slower, thicker, lower resolution, and heavier! 32 GB really isn't enough storage either.
It is super annoying there are not any good 8 inch Android tablets. The Huawei M6 8.4 looks okay, but being in the US it is a bit of a pain to get.

The only great 8" tablet is the Lenovo Legion Y700, running SD870 with 12gb ram. 2560x1600, but IPS and not OLED.
I own the Tab S 8.4 (2014), the Tab A 8.4 (2020) and the Y700 (2021, 8.8").
Tab A is terrible.
It's painfully slow.
It needs root.
It has the same RAM as a tablet 6 YEARS older than it, with LOWER resolution and ! much worse performance. I wish it could be fixed.... Android 10 Lineage is out for Tab S 8.4.

I have done quite a few mods/tweaks to system/Global/Secure settings and also disabled Gaming Optimization Service (GOS) via Alliance Sheild X, it has made a MASSIVE difference. This device's (SM-T307U) performance is being HEAVILY limited by software-based restrictions. Most of which can be disabled without root. I can go into more detail as to how ive sped up this device if anyone is interested.
NOTE - If someone has the ATT version and can drop the .IMG or Firmware .zip that'd be awesome.
Ill keep trying to find a way to root this device until i get a new one, if anyone else has any success, DM me.

I've already deleted, turned-off and disabled everything I can. It's a good bit snappier, but still a dog.
I actually have 2, so I may play around with deleting/disabling apps via ADB. But it's not battery drain, which with some securetask special permissions I've gotten it to SIP power while the screen is off (varies, as low as 2% per day up to about 6-7%).
I checked the usual sources and couldn't find any AT&T image files.

Yeah this this is good on power, it is just severely limited. Judging from similar devices with the same exynos processor, there's got to be something holding it back. I again recommend using SetEdit or something similar to modify some params in the settings tables. The line I highlighted is in both this tablet and my Galaxy S22 & S21. I also found a param in there called "Enhanced CPU responsiveness" which was set to off, after turning that on, I noticed a massive gain in my tablet.
Also worth noting is I added the line "Allow_more_heat_value" with a value of "30" and it allows all cores to boot to max.

I'll have to give this a shot. I wouldn't think AT&T throttled the CPU, which means Sammie did it for some reason. Probably to hit some sort of battery life benchmark. Or maybe it caused instability in some devices. But being a mid-tier processor you wouldn't expect that it needed to be throttled.
I believe Sammie is giving up on the Exynos processors. I bet they had issues on this tablet, said "screw it" and just **** this out with a throttled cpu.

It's 100% a Samsung related throttle. From my understanding, it's done because they use many of the same parts/processors in various devices, so as a way to control device specific performances, they set limitations. For example, this tablet has the same processor as some of their other "Higher-end" models (if I'm not mistaken), so to keep this tablet from outperforming the others, it's limited. I'm sure there are other reasons, like the battery benchmark bit that you mentioned too.
But yeah. This is 100% a Samsung based throttling.

I’d be interested in how you tweaked this tablet to function better.

Can you please share the mods/tweaks you've done?
I have one of these purely for its size, I travel over Europe and as the seating space is limited the smaller the better. I am running the Canadian Wind software but if anyone can give me a run through on disabling apps/services to speed up a bit that would be helpful.
I am going to buy the Lenovo Legion Y700 but only when a global version with LTE is available.
Cheers
Nick
