I'm setting up a new unrooted Moto G7 (android pie) and cannot find how to change the specific notification sound used for incoming text messages. I've looked everywhere. I did it on my previous Moto G7.
How do I set a specific notification sound just for incoming text messages? Where is that setting? It is not in the messages app settings, nor in the Apps Notifications.
Here's what I mean. There is nowhere to set the notification sound for incoming text messages. Where do I set it the way I set the phone ringtone?
Thanks.

Solved:
I finally found it!
In Messaging/Notification there is a button for 'behavior'. (See screenshot) If the behavior selected does not include 'sound', the option to set a ringtone is not shown. On my phone, for some reason the behavior previously chosen did not include sound and therefore there was no option to chose a ringtone.
Logical but very confusing.
(You are correct however. I discovered it before I read your message. 'Other notification' was a choice that did include 'sound'. Don't know how or when I had selected it when setting up this new phone).

Really? I have the stock ROM and it allows both alarms + ringtones + mp3s etc.
Which ROM do you have?
i'm not sure...how can i see what rom i have?
...and one more thing-there's a logo VODAFONE at the back of the phone?Does this mean that they've messed up the menus?
i found it ...but i stll don't know how to check the rom...
THis is a basic part of Windows Mobile, I can't see Vodafone messing with it. You are going into "Settings" then "Sounds & Notifications" correct? Or I suspect you haven't chosen the correct event in the drop down box, as for Messaging:New Text Message you don't get a Ring to change, it asks you which sound to play...
So I did the "upgrade" that TMO put out on their website for the HD2 and now I do not get the popup message window when a new text comes in. Before the upgrade it my phone was dormant and I had a new text message the display would come to life and a box would display at the bottom of the screen with a preview of the message (in addition to the normal audible notification). Now the display comes on and the audible notification occurs but there is not popup box anymore. Any thoughts?

Go to settings...sounds and notifications....notifications..go to text message and put a check in display message on screen
Thank you for the reply zelendel. My menus do not have that exact string. If I go to Settings I have a Sounds & Display option, which has the following options - Profiles, Volume, Ring and Notifications, Display and G-Sensor. The only place in these menus that I can alter the text message is teh sound that plays. I do not see a checkbox.

Ok sounds like those are the manila style settings. In the settings there may be a softkey marked all settings and that should take you to the WM settings. if not then disable sense and then goint settings and that should give you the WM settings as well.

Wrong "settings" area. When you're on the settings tab there, click "menu" in the bottom right, then "all settings", then "sounds and notifications" On the 2nd tab ("notifications"), pick "Message: New message" from the first drop-down, then you'll see the check box you need.
Thank you Phunk! That was what I was missing!!!

No prob...it was the same place zelendel was referring to, but HTC did nobody a favor when they created a 2nd distinct set of "settings" and kept the name the same
Yeah sorry I disabled the manila settings thing long ago and forgot about it.
Issue resolved.

A few months ago I moved from Windows Mobile 6.5 to Android. A feature I miss a bunch is the ability to have my scheduled tasks alert me. Using Android the task alert is the text message alert. I have been unable to find a way to make my tasks have a separate alert. Does anyone know of a way to do this? Thanks!
Are you referring to the notification ringtones? because you can change that through the settings in the calander app to make it something different than the default.

yes that is what I am referring to... however if I change the notification ring tone it changes the text message ring tone.
Tasks
I have all my schedules for work in my phone set up in my calander, since i also came from a Windows phone (Q9C) i was using outlook for all my apts. THere is a exchange program u can use thru google that will link the 2 and bring all your tasks into your new calander on your phone. U can then set each event to alert u a set time before, just like in WINM0b. I set mine up to alert me 1 hour before i work and if the phone is on silent, theres a icon on top left screen telling me theres a event. u can also set up sounds. I hope this helps, and hope the info helps u. I am running Dk28 Froyo and there are some differences, so if some of this makes no sense, thats prob the reason. the program thru google is google calander. seach for it, it works

When you change it through the calendar app, it only effects notifications from that app, the default notification ringtone will remain the same. Also, you can specify a specific notification ringtone through the messaging app, and gmail as well, and have them all be something different than the default notification ringtone that is set through the main settings->sound menu.
Open up the calendar app, hit the menu button, select settings, then change the ringtone for that app.
All my appointments are through google calender. I am running Froyo (Bonsai MOD). The one hour thing is what I have as well... the issue I am having is my text msg alert seems like it has to be the same as the task alert. I liked having my task alert long(like a ring tone) and I like having a short text msg alert.

wow... just wow. I really feel like a noob. It was so simple. Thanks!
You can also DL tone picker from the market. It will give you a few more selections when trying to change notification tones, including the use of music found on your SD card. Just a lil FYI if you're not too big on system tones only.

Thanks for the heads up however "Select music" is installed by default and will let you do the music from your SD card thing(all my ring tones are there)
You can also just create a directory on your sd card and place your audio files there. On your sd card, create a directory with folders as such
sdcard
|-media
--|-audio
----|-alarms
------|-random.mp3
------|-random.ogg
----|-notifications
------|-another.mp3
------|-another.aac
----|-ringtones
------|-you_get_the_picture.mp3
------|-insert_audio_file_here.wav
Anyone else having this issue? In "Settings - Sound - Under Ringtones and Notifications - Vibrations" I am trying to change it to Heartbeat but everytime I receive any notification it still vibrates as if it were set to Basic Call.

as stupid as this sounds, after you select it, make to hit save at the top.

There isn't a save option. If I go back into settings Heartbeat is still selected. Even after a reboot. So it looks like the setting is selected correctly it just isn't working.
Where is the setting to change ringtone for the received SMS?
I don't see any such setting in the (stock) SMS app, and in global Settings/Sounds, there are only options to set ringtone for calls, alarm, events and notification - none of them corresponds to SMS
MIUI 11.0.4.0 QFJEUXM Global Stable
Good one
Go to settings, sound and vibration, there you have 4 rectangles at the very top, right bottom is notification tile, so you know what to do

Hmm ok, but that means SMS must share the same tune as any other notification (excl. calls, alarms and calendar events). Pretty bad design from Xiaomi
Besides, this is a dual SIM phone, hence expected to be able to define different 'ringtones' for SMSes received over different SIM cards (fortunately, ringtones for calls can be distinguished per SIM channels)
Dude, do you even went through settings or used search in settings?
You can set specific ringtone to every contact and you also can go to settings, notifications where you have every app with possibility to set specific notification and ringtone

Dude, I don't want to set different ringtone for every contact, but simply want to distinguish from which SIM channel did SMS come.
I will be very grateful if you show me where is that in the MiUi Settings.
And I know that eg WhatsApp and similar apps can set their own, different tumes (to distinguish from default notification - but this is not thanks to MIUI or XiaomiI, but thanks to those apps and their developers themselves.
Found it, it is possible to define different ringtones for SMS received via SIM 1 and SIM 2, by using Setedit app and by changing the values for:
sms_received_sound_slot_1
sms_received_sound_slot_2
in the System Table
