hello everyone. i been a long time lurker of this site but never had the courage/motive to post. but i have an issue.
after much reading of how great rooting your phone can be. i too wanted to do it. so i looked n looked until i decided that id tryout CM7 cyanogen site
i believe i was able to unlock the bootloader/device. everytime i power up my phone regular start up starts with an unlocked lock at the bottom(like its supposed to right lol)
but here is as far as i get to go. i backed up my apps with astro file manager. then downloaded rom manager n as soon as i open it says "you must root your phone for ROM manager to function. superuser was not found at "/system/xbin/su". use goo search on ur computer to root your phone"
im stuck here because well im a noob and dont know why this is showing up. i was kinda hoping one of you guys could help me out here...
Taking straight from the wiki. Please read it before asking questions.
very generic explanation of steps needed to update a stock phone to custom ROM:
Download the ROM of your choice.
Copy the downloaded ROM image to the SD card
Root if you don't want to unlock bootloader (or just unlock bootloader).
Flash custom recovery image (if not done while rooting)
Turn off the phone
Turn on the phone while holding Volume Down
Select "BOOTLOADER" from the menu
Select "RECOVERY" from the menu
Select "Wipe"
Select "Wipe data / factory reset"
Select "Wipe Dalvik cache"
Return to main recovery menu
Select "Flash update.zip" or "Flash ZIP file"
Turn off verification, if such option is presented
Select your downloaded ROM image
Wait for the flash to finish successfully, if it didn't - do not continue!
Return to main recovery menu
Reboot the phone
You can follow a video walkthrough for this here: How to Flash a Custom ROM
To add to the post above, look at my signature and make sure you read and execute the relevant guide.
Just to clarify what the others are saying. You don't have root because you didn't root your phone.
You only unlocked the bootloader, which allows you to flash partitions through fastboot.
you havent rooted ,just unlocked bootloader

since you have a unlocked bootloader you can do fastboot flash..
get amon ra recovery and do fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
after you do that it should say sending flashing and done with no errors
from then reboot into recovery and do a nandroid of rom then do wipe and wipe and flash selected rom you want.. cm7 plus gapps after reboot and you haverom..
nexus one is ez to gainroot if you unlockboot loadder.. if you dont then it gets more complicated..

I'll come to this in a moment, wait for a while as I'm currently writing another post.
EDIT: guide here:
1. View this warning: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481630
2. If your phone manufacture date is (11W28 or below), proceed with the following steps, otherwise you cannot flash MiniCM7 and should flash PrimeHD/GingerDX for a similar experience.
3. If you can unlock your BL safely, read my guide on how to unlock your bootloader: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1254225. The links of simpler guides can be found inside my guide in the first few sections.
4. Once done, download Flashtool from here: androxyde.github.com. Install the ADB drivers for your device and the Flash mode drivers (found in /drivers folder in Flashtool folder).
5. Flash the nAa kernel here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350484 using Flashtool
6. Boot into recovery using the back button and then create a backup.
7. Flash MiniCM7 ROM from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362585 and the recommended GApps, then full wipe and wipe cache and dalvik cache, and then reboot.
DONE (hopefully)

Thanks for reading. When I received my phone a week ago, I was burnt twice before when flashing CF Autoroot and then PhilZ via Odin and wouldn't get past the logo, so I flashed TWRP and it was a nightmare just to get into recovery. I gave up and used KIES to go back to stock.
So, in as simple an explanation as possible, please can you tell me how to install a root kernel onto stock 5.0 build BOD3 so I don't lose anything?
Thank you very much?

Thanks for that condescending reply. The dev section is such a mess, there's no organisation whatsoever and if I wanted to flash an entire new ROM, I would, but I don't.
Hence my request.
Which Device?
Sent From Nexus 6
Galaxy S5 SM-G900F
Lollipop 5.0
Build LRX21T.G900FXXU1BOD3
Have you tried installing the custom recovery using the TWRP MANAGER app? Worked for me!
It on PlayStore

it wasn't a condescending reply, it just seemed that way.
firstly, if you can concentrate the dev sections aren't that bad, secondly no one mentioned rom flashing at all. ever. in fact you never even explained what you needed to flash recovery for.
i was offering you the chance to hunt for the answer like we had to but since you need the help ill give it
this thread for twrp
TWRp is what i use to flash stuff if i want to and it works fine but if you want philz then all you have to do is go here go to klte and download the odin version, then flash via a pc
the problem you had was because the odin chainfire root is slightly ****y an you need the recovery flashable version. so you put philz or twrp in the phone and flash the chainfire root via the recovery,
now i apologies if you thought that i was being condescending but i got all that info from the place i pointed you to earlier, theres no reason you couldnt have done it aswell. i was trying to help by pointing you in a direction, but no ones here to spoon feed. you dont learn anything from it.
Apologies, as it seemed that way, but you have been helpful in your reply.
So I can flash this TWRP > https://dl.twrp.me/klte/twrp-2.8.7.0-klte.img.tar.html. Does flashing TWRP give me SuperSu or is that something separate I need to install?
I don't expect to be spoon-fed, I like to learn things, but this stuff is so delicate that I want to make sure I'm using the right files.
Thanks in advance.

no twrp is a recovery, a custom recovery which makes it easier to flash non official firmwares. install twrp via odin, then flash the chainfire root via twrp flashing, the chainfire flash root will gove you super su
As it happens, TWRP installed SuperSU automatically.
I have a Note 3 N9005.
I installed the latest TWRP recovery.
No matter which rom I try to flash to the system, the same thing happens.
I see that the Aroma installer is strarting and than it just resets for no reason, no install made.
The only sulotion I have found so far is to install a 5.0 stock rom via Odin.
I want to install a custom rom 6.0.1.
Does anyone know what the hell?
Sae problem but a lil worse!!

I tried to do the same but ended up bricking my phone. So then I try to unbrick/unroot my phone by flashing the stock rom but I can't do that either cause now it says "Volume Size is too big 4620288<4718599. Need help!!!! ASAP!
Hey guys, I had the same problem at first and it freaked me out too.
Try installing the older 2.8.7.0 version for TWRP through the app, instead of the latest or any other after v3 for that matter. Apparently I've read from other forums that it's due to lack of Aroma Installer Support.
Hope this helps
Confirm the phone's model # by booting into download mode befor flashing TWRP or a stock ROM from sammobile.com.
Will try
I flashed the stock rom packege with odin.
saved my phone after brick.
so you are saying that by downgrading the TWRP recovery i can use aroma insatller based roms again?
cause i also tried to install reserection remix rom (I think this has no aroma in it), i got a massage that said that i cannot install it as well.
refuses to let me change into anything but stock rom.
rooting did not help at all.

To be honest I don't really know about Cyanogen Mod, however this was just my personal experience with Aroma Installer. I've tried DarkWolf_FW and Aryamod ROMs which are both S7 Edge Port ROMs, and they both use Aroma Installer.
- Also! Take the opportunity to make a Nandroid backup just in case the installation goes bad, then you can restore to where you are right now. Honestly downgrading just worked for me so please don't make me liable if anything goes to pot, at least you will have a full device backup to the exact point in your system which I have found extremely useful when trying different ROMs and Kernels.
tnks
don't worry man
1. I always backup the whole phone before ANY change.
2. your suggestion sound interesting, cause i tried the same rom's you did but no install was made.
3. i'll maybe try a different recovery... maybe CWM.

Hey, just randomly thinking, did you reset all your System, Data and Cache and Dalvik Cache files before you tried to install the ROMs? Sorry, this might not make a difference, but I don't think I have any more advice to give (I'm kinda new to this too ).
Hope CWM recovery goes well, let me know how it goes

Doing a complete backup before anything is always the safest bet.
From my experience, TWRP 3+ is fine for CM and AOSP based ROMs.
TWRP 2.8.7-0 is the one you should use to flash ROMs using AROMA Installer.
If you read the OP (opening post) on any ROM forum, it will usually include installation instructions and generally states which TWRP version should be used.
Good Luck.

I presume when you say it doesn't turn on you mean it doesn't boot into the Android environment. Have you tried unplugging the battery and pressing the Volume Up + Home + Power Button? Yes... I was surprised you don't have to be an octopus too..
Then restore the Nandroid backup from before.
You can also flash TWRP through Odin without root, have a look at the TWRP website for more info.

all you need is to flush new stock rom via Odin.
Search the web (like I did) to find a stock rom with 4 .tar files in it.
There should be instructions on how to install but usually all needs to be done is this:
1. load odin 3.*
2. enter the phone in download mode.
3. After you see the line 'add' in odin, load the .tar files to the correct place each (not hard they are tagged by same name)
4. Flush and pray.
5. After a successful install the phone will reboot, this will take a while so don't get streesed.
after about 10-15 min the phone will load again.
Root one more time via odin and try to install again.

Try Sammobile as they have a large database of firmwares for your phone and the country variants.
Hello. Loving the phone. Had it for about 2 weeks. I enrolled and took the 7.1 beta. All is well so far but I'm itching to try some custom Roms.
Is the unlocking bootloader and rooting process the same on 7.1 as they were on 7.0?
Just to make sure I don't mess this up, I should first unlock the bootloader. Then install twrp (latest version?) Then make a backup, and then root?
Think I'll try out pure Nexus, anything specific about flashing this that I should be aware of? Thank you! Ready to make the most of this device : )
Go here, best place to start.
Unlocking the bootloader and rooting is the same as 7.0
Remember when u Unlock the Bootloader it will wipe your phone so backup all your Google accounts and copy the stuff that u wanna keep from the Internal Storage to the computer.
Use TWRP 3.2.0.2 or unofficial 3.2.2.3
After recovery is installed if u wanna root u MUST flash SuperSU while in recovery if not when u boot up the Stock Factory Recovery will overwrite TWRP and u will then have to re flash TWRP..
After TWRP is flashed boot directly into recovery from Bootloader and then you can make a nandroid b4 u flash SuperSU for root or after which ever u prefer.
Pure Nexus is a Great ROM everything that u need to flash is there on the first page.
ROM/Gapps/Vendor.
But definitely make sure u read the Guide that posted b4 me as it's more detailed
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
Some custom ROMs also have excellent guides that are very helpful. Pure Nexus, for example, has really clear directions on what to do once your bootloader is ready to go. Also has links to necessary vendor images, etc.
