Problems with Android 9 Pie - Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Questions & Answers

I am now having a few problems with Android 9 on my new MI Note 7. I cannot use a number of Apps, at all or partially. One cause concerns Accessibility. After clicking the ON switch I get popups saying something about 'if an app is in the way I should move it aside'. I do not understand what this this at all, and I do not see the app I want anyway, for anything to be 'in its way'. The On switch returns to Off and cannot be kept on in the List of apps in Accessibility. I have not come across anything like this on my Android 7 Tablet and am baffled, though I expect it will turn out to be something basic?
A further problem is that an app which contains a file manager does not display pictures / photos, or documents, etc. I am guessing this is because it does not access the SD Card on which they are installed, rendering it useless?

I now have another problem as somehow I have altered the display colours and am unable to correct them through anything I can find in Settings. The colour Settings available have no effect. The unwanted effect mainly relates to the app ICONS which in general are washed out, the most obvious example is that anything which should be RED is displayed as BROWN. Green and yellow are also affected. I expected the display settings, such as colour and contrast, would eliminate the problem but they do not.

I have found the Setting to deal with the colour issue

I am still having problems with Accessibility not being accessible

I understand about 'Accessibility' being related to users with vision or other handicaps, it means this on my Windows PC too, but I don't think that was the menu I was referring to. However. I amn able to reproduce it even after given up on the Edge Action app which I have now removed. I suspected it may have been related to that, but it seems not as I am still getting blocked from using some apps, I am directed to Accessibility but cannot get the on / off switch to remain on even for a few seconds.

Mystery box

Hi Guys,
i dont know if anyone else is getting this but i never had it before, i keep getting what looks to be a small notification box appearing but you cant see it as it seems to appear then shoot beneath everything, it seems to be when about to write a text and using a couple of other bits it will pop up. The notification box itself is small and has a small 'ok' option to the top right of it
any ideas??
most certainly you have installed something that's causing this, I've went through 4 different roms including the stock and never encountered anything similar.
Review the running tasks with a taskmanager like MMTaskManager, or the list of installed applications via settings-apps-remove apps, you'll need to use your investigative talents to identify the cause

Venue Pro issue tracker

EDIT: Feb 14 / 2012 - Wow. It has been a while. I pre-ordered one of the original DVPs, went on the roller-coaster ride of trying to get it SIM unlocked, returned it to Dell and took the 15% restocking hit, then watched in agony as a simple "just email Dell" free unlocking solution came available about a month later. I've had a second-hand HD2 through most of 2011, running various builds of WP7 and Android, until the digitizer bit the dust. Just snapped up a DVP on eBay - I'm back baby! Time to update this thread.
Whether you're a DVP owner, future owner or still on the fence about a purchase, it might be useful to have a single thread listing the known issues with this model (and any discovered fixes, workarounds, etc.). I'll try to keep this up-to-date based on comments below. Have I missed anything?
Compass driver broken by Mango update
Much-discussed; interop unlock or custom firmware would allow a fix (i.e. flashing an unsigned cab could potentially put the old driver back)
No HSPA or roaming triangle indicators
Diagnosis: software issue... can't get an "H" or triangle symbol to appear in the relevant contexts.
Apparently this is only an issue on TMO-US branded units, and it is entirely cosmetic. Interop unlock would allow us to make the necessary registry edits to bring back the HSPA indicator.
Camera: slow shutter speed = blurry indoor shots
Partially improved in successive firmware updates
Flaky reception
Somewhat improved, according to user reports.
Cell radio: drops connections when switching from 2G to 3G
Fixed by Dell in new units.
WiFi: some devices can't connect to secure networks
Fixed by Dell in new units.
SIM: error
Fixed by Dell in new units.

Fixed in NoDo
Email: forwarding from non-Exchange account uses .eml attachment instead of inline text

Camera: issues with retaining settings

Headphone jack: curved, bad connection?
I don't think the headphone Jack poor connection is explicitly caused by the curved jack. Checking out my friends HTC desire, I noticed that it too has a curved jack that doesn't completely cover the headphone plug.

Thanks. I'm partly basing this on a youtube video from a DVP owner who demonstrates how the earphone jack won't plug all the way in, because of the curved design.
Can any actual DVP owners comment on this? Is the problem widespread?

Awesome thread, love the idea & I haven't really heard much of the issues listed here but its great that you put it out there.
Hopefully many get fixed in the upcoming update in January or even the new devices.
Many don't seem to apply to me like the camera since I rarely ever use the camera but the 2G to 3G one is pretty big.
The camera was bad in the first phone I received (Engineering Sample) but in the next phone the Cam was alright. This unit didn't have that slow shutter problem
The images were comparable to HD7.

Might want to add these to the Windows phone 7 list:
1) No real multi-tasking support to speak of in phone 7, even the "back" button doesn't bring you back to an active program in most cases, but the program has to re-initialize.
2) No support for mobile hotspot function in phone 7
3) No true "live tile" support for 3rd party apps (like twitter etc...); more like dead tiles.
I am concerned that the speed of WP7 is dependent on only having 1 app running and therefore MS doesn't want multi-tasking.

This stuff crosses over into general criticisms of the OS. I'm trying to restrict bugs to things that were obviously overlooked or have been announced as upcoming fixes - not new features or disagreements over design.
This is an Windows Phone 7 bug, all devices suffer from this. So while this is an issue nonetheless, you should not decide not to get the Dell Venue Pro based on this 'bug' alone. If you want a Windows Phone 7 device, you will have this problem, hopefully Microsoft will fix it in the next update.

Thanks for the correction; I was under the impression that each OEM made their own customized Camera app. Curious if they all suffer from the same problem - hopefully that means it will be fixed in the January update.

We might not get this confirmed until late December - as far as I can tell by the forums, many of the early birds who got their DVPs from the Microsoft Stores are still waiting on replacement units. Hopefully one or two other people who have already got a good replacement can chime in here, but I fear we won't know the status of these issues until the big wave of online orders start shipping out.
Call me crazy, but I think that if this is a simple software issue, Dell will fix it. In the alternative maybe we'll see some homebrew camera apps next year that we can sideload

1. That is the fault of the developers of the apps. The OS supports save states so when you go back it resumes where you left off. You can see this in OEM apps like IE, but the 3rd party browsers don't do this.
2. Not sure if that is in the works
3. Since when? Weatherbug, weather channel, flixter, beez twit app all support live tiles.

This is an interesting one. I agree with you that a lot of this is developer-related, but I think Microsoft will still end up making some adjustments to multitasking next year. Remember that the internal system apps (like IE) are permitted to do true background multitasking by the OS, while 3rd-party apps aren't.
I have read that the save state thing is kind of tricky because apps often don't get a warning that they are about to be put to sleep - the OS just responds instantly when you hit "back" or "home". So the only apps that can take advantage of this feature are the ones that are saving their state all the time - which is only practical for some app designs. A 3rd-party music or video app might make a record of whatever song or video you're watching, but must it save the elapsed track time every second? Every 10 seconds? Whatever granularity is chosen will be the state you can return to after the app loses focus.
MS needs to allow true background multitasking/threading in a few limited situations:
- the app loses focus, receives a "save your current state" message from the OS, and is allowed to save its state in the background
- the app sends a tiny bit of data to the cloud every 5 minutes (i.e. Google Latitude) - MS could maybe impose a "maximum lines of code" on this upload function?
- the app does a tiny bit of processing with the push data it gets from the cloud, without necessarily getting user interaction
I believe allowing these three types of multitasking would really open up possibilities for developers.
What you say is not entirely true. Applications do receive a warning when the system is going to navigate away from the application, just the way like you suggest it as the first option. However in practice it is a little more complicated than that.
There are 4 events in Windows Phone 7, Launch/Close and Activated/Deactivated. The first two are just the startup and closing of the two while the latter is the tombstoning warning and retrieval event. So when your application receives it's 'deactivated' message, it is allowed to do some final saving of it's state (there is a time limit, but it's rather flexible). Windows Phone will navigate away even though the save state hasn't been completed yet, so that part of 'multi-tasking' is implemented.
The problem you all mention comes from the fact that 'home' and 'back' are not the same for 3rd-party applications (and even some internal ones). Back is generally seen as 'back one page' and 'home' as 'go to the start screen'. However if you are 1 page away from the home screen, the 'back' button will act as 'close' button... So it will sent a 'close' event to the application, rather than the 'deactivated' event (and not allowing the application to tombstone itself). This way, the next time you boot the application it will restart as it will receive the 'launch' event and not the 'activated' one. Easiest 'solution' is to use the 'home' button instead, however this will mess up your 'back'-botton behaviour a little.

Basically I think Microsoft needs to 'fix' the 'back'-button acting as 'close'-button, as no-one thinks it will act this way.

LOL, it sounds like I was pretty darn close for a lay-person. I don't have a WP7 device yet, but tell me, how often to do you navigate away from an app OTHER than by going to the homescreen? The only other way I can imagine is by accepting some kind of toast push notification, pressing the Search button or the Camera button.
The bottom line is that MS intended to do this better - but as you have said, apps are often losing focus in a way that doesn't even allow the app to save its state, even if it has been designed to do so. Apps should be given a chance to save their state whether they're being minimized or closed, so they can return to the last state whether they're being woken up or started fresh.
You were quite close indeed and you're right that this is quite an irritating bug (Microsoft might say it's a feature, but let's keep it at a bug for now). Mostly because as a Windows Phone user you have no idea when an application 'closes' or 'tombstones'...

Agreed, I think you have a valid point there. It certainly would increase the multi-task-experience (even though it is not true multi-tasking) as all applications would seem as if they were running next to eachother (as was the idea initially). It might be nice if an application could implement 'tombstoning' when it receives the 'close' command, which is not available right now (no access to the tombstoning service).

I hope you are correct as I have ordered thte dvp, but though the suspend/resume multi-tasking sounds like a good idea, it seems extremely weak in practice.
Here is a clip showing the types of behaviors that concern me including the live tile issue.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNfpPrto07Q&feature=related
WP7 is a very elaborate and beautiful operating system which must require heavy resources to accomplish. Perhaps we will have to wait for dual core devices before we will see WP7 multi-tasking like we would hope. But it seems like the caching and accessing current tasks to preserve resouces could be done more effectively, and would definitely improve the user experience.

The App Style Guide is clear about the 'right' app behaviour, and I'm sure Microsoft consider it a feature, not a bug. It enforces a set of rules that they just expect users to get used to:
1) Switching away from an app (e.g. hitting search or launch) should leave the app in a state where you can come back to it (and pick up again from where you left off) by pressing the back button.
2) The way to terminate an app is to 'back out' of it. Once you have terminated an app, you can't come back to it.
3) Whenever you launch an app from the menu, it will start from scratch.
Microsoft's own apps follow this pattern.
These rules are intended to give the feeling of 'all apps existing in a stack' (like the stack of navigations you move through when using a web browser). I think that represents a conscious design decision on Microsoft's part ... maybe a bad design decision, but not a bug as such.
By the way, an app can trap and modify the behaviour of the 'back' key. Actually, the developer has to do this, to ensure that the app does the right thing in all cases (for instance, if the app has a popup dialog open, the 'back' key will close the popup dialog, not back out of the app). This does give the app a chance to respond to the 'back out' action, by saving state or by putting up a 'do you really want to quit?' message. But Rule #3 above means that when the app is restarted, it has to look like a new instance of the app, not a continuation of the instance that the user terminated.

Interesting. It would be nice if there was at least some subtle little toast or something like "do you want to pick up where you left off?", maybe just for apps that are super-complex, at the developer's discretion.
Whatever MS and developers did, I'm glad that MS appears to recognize that users aren't super happy with the outcome - I believe we'll see a change in the second update of 2011.

Honecomb better than Jellybean

After months of procastination I finally made the plunge and upgraded my Samsung Galaxy Tab GT-P1000 from Honeycomb to Jellybean and I can confess it's like an upgrade to hell.
I cannot think of one good reason for doing this to a tab.
Apart from the cosmetic changes, which are to be expected, a lot of the other changes have been made to the internals which seem to degrade the system and the experience.
I used ROM Manager with cm-10.1-20130504-EXPERIMENTAL-p1-cdesai.zip, and gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip for the upgrade.
I rely heavily on bluetooth for making and receiving phone calls on the tab with Plantronics Voyager Pro and also Polar heart rate monitor which I use in the gym., so bluetooth is absolutely essential, so it was shock horror when I found bluetooth not working.
However thanks to ROM Manager for suggesting an update and a reboot and now the bluetooth is working.
However the notification bar at the top of the screen together with its icons are now so tiny that one almost needs a magnifying glass to see them.
In particular the bluetooth icon is gray instead of blue giving the impression that it is not enabled. Since found out that grey icon means enabled, turns to blue when paired/connected and if not enabled then it disappears.
Another concern was that the file system seemed to be all messed up with respect to external card.
Whereas the old file folder used to show externalsd right at the top in a blue folder the new File Manager folder opens showing all the folders in sdcard0 but there is a cumbersome fix to this. Open FileManager, then Menu-Settings-GeneralSettings-AccssMode and select 'Root Access Mode' then a new folder appears called "storage" appears will open.
This will then show a choice of two folders sdcard0 and sdcard1.
Other changes like getting to know how to change the widget on the lock screen and setting permissions for some apps are ongoing.
Some programs which previously had access to the external card are messed up as the path is no longer valid and will have to be reinstalled as well as their maps.
I can say that after a week the bluetooth connections seem fairly reliable and responsive thanks to the CM update.
I think it is just too much trouble to revert to Honeycomb otherwise I would and in my opinion that was the best and most stable version of android, at least on my rooted tab. All I have really achieved is a few cosmetic changes and a lot of work getting everything going like I had it before. One advantage is that I can now install Chrome which seems to be a fairly good browser apart from the fact that it is always running.
I was surprised to find that Google Maps was not installed and had to go and fetch it from the app store.
A major problem which I ran into was that every time an app gets installed it puts what looks like a shortcut on the home screen. If I try to remove the shortcut by dragging it over the X the word 'remove' turns to 'uninstall'.
Since found out after a lot of googling that it is possible to go into the Play Store, tap Settings and uncheck the box next to Auto-add widgets to prevent this happening, and to get rid of a shortcut from your home screen just long-press on it and then flick it up off the screen rather than drag. Crazy. I would imagine that the default setting would be not to add the 'hard to get rid of' shortcut in the first place.
i use the tab for playing with the features of the new releases, so i am fine with jb. But my real question is quite OT:
Which polar monitor do you use? What app do you use with it? How is your experience with it?
Hi there martini2, the Polar bluetooth heart rate monitor works well with most apps. I checked quite a few exercise/activity apps until I found the best one that suited me was Sports Tracker Pro and I am very happy with that set-up. A bit disappointed that I didn't get a hxm device as they have released the software to the public which is a big plus and the hxm would also work with Sports Tracker Pro.
I am now committed to jelly bean and have belted it into shape the way I think I had things before.
In spite of my criticism I think the people over at Cyanogenmod have done a terrific job on the experimental version of jelly bean for the Galaxy Tab and the ongoing weekly updates.
Hope that helps.
So far i've no problem using cm-10.1-20130703-NIGHTLY-p4.zip. I just have a random flicker and its really fast. Sometime its unnoticeable.

[FIXED] Push Notifications Not Reliable on the S8/Nougat

Upgrading from the S5, Chrome Push Notifications were almost always instantaneous, and I never once missed a notification. On the S8, many are delayed and I miss a huge number of them, mostly when my phone is "off" (eg, in my pocket). Anyone else experiencing this, or know how I can fix it? The only thing that has changed is the phone, so it's definitely something with the S8 (or possibly the kernel version running on it). Seems to happen on both wifi and cellular network. I need these notifications, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Update: Here is how to fix the issue of not getting notifications for an application on the Samsung S8, or probably any Nougat device:
Go to Settings -> Apps
Click the : Menu in top right, select -> [Special Access]
Select > Optimize Battery Usage ->
Click the dropdown menu towards the top of the screen that says: "Apps not optimized [v]" -> change to [All Apps]
Add any application you want to get notifications for without delay, all the time. Eg, Chrome, Gmail, Facebook, etc.
Hopefully Google will fix the overzealous battery optimizations soon so we don't have to do this!
Oh boy. I love the phone, but something in the RAM and Battery optimization is killing all background apps, including your Chrome. Drives me nuts, every time I switch between apps and return to previous, its restarted, which means forgots to where I was. Very annoying when reading news, Facebook etc. Seems like there is no fix for it at the moment.
Excluding apps from battery optimization doesn't help at all. Everyone think is Nougat problem, but my S7 edge didn't have the same issue.
I thought I'm the only one with delayed notification issue. I tested the gmail notification on my s8+. The phone was in standby mode on my pocket and I sent the email from another account. No notification until 4 minutes later. With my other phone notifications are instant. I have issues with other app notification as well. The forums apps will not even notify me anymore if someone responded to my post.
It is definitely related to some overly aggressive battery/cpu/ram optimizations on this phone. I also have seen weirdness in other apps, like you guys mentioned. However, one exception is AquaMail, which when I set it back up on this phone during install, it explicitly asked me to click a thing that took me to some deep setting that allowed me to excluded AquaMail from some battery or some other optimization. I don't remember, unfortunately, because I was just trying to get my phone setup, and didn't think it'd be such a widespread issue. I'll try to dig around and see if it still shows a way to get back to that setting, or if there is a way to add other apps while IN that page.
I also have the battery optimization thing to "Off" and it's not monitoring apps (so it says). In developer settings, there's a background apps setting, default is "standard limit", whatever that means, but the largest choice is 4, which seems really small...
This is definitely frustrating, I love the hardware side of this phone, it's amazing, but the software/OS execution seems like a huge miss, almost like it went completely untested live. Hope either they fix these issues soon, or someone figures a way to do so.
The interesting part is that I have too under Battery: Power saving modeto OFF, but that doesn't stop the phone still to put apps to sleep. An hour ago I had a notification that 13 aps will be pit to sleep, even that I have power saving mode to off.
It is very annoying: if I have clicked form something(web page or Facebook, Upday etc) to a link and start reading, but in the mean time I have a message and open it to respond, when I am back to the first app with the open link, it gets reloded to the original page as I have never clicked on the link. Facebook is very good example.
I can't even seem to figure out how to get to a RAM usage screen in settings at all on this phone. I'm curious if it's something sucking down all the RAM causing apps to swap on/off, or it is just an aggressive optimization setting somewhere.
Sounds to me like a Nougat issue rather than anyhting to do with this phone. This is exactly the sort of thing that has worried me constantly since i first heard about this kind of battery saving feature they decided to implement in Nougat.
Have any of you been using Nougat on your previous device without having this issue? If not then I would say it is probably Nougat causing it.
I have similar with bluemail where sometimes it doesnt notify me of hotmail emails very quickly but i put that down to bluemail being a bit slow sometimes since it did it on my S5 too.
This is my first experience with Nougat. stoyank said his S7 on Nougat did not have this issue, fwiw.
I'll take reliable apps over better battery any day of the week. This is pretty ridiculous, and even more so since there doesn't appear to be a way to fix/turn it off!
Update:
Found the settings page:
Settings -> Apps -> : Menu : Special Access -> Optimize Battery Usage -> Apps not optimized [v] -> All Apps
On this page almost everything is listed as "on". I scrolled through, turned Chrome, Chrome Device Library, and Google Services Framework OFF. No idea if this will help, but hopefully it will.
Will let you guys know later today if I missed any more updates. There might be another service needs turned off on this page that I missed. If you're missing updates in one of your apps, try turning that off in this page, and see if it helps. I'm guessing and hoping it does work, because AquaMail was one of the few things listed here as Off (from my config thing I did when I setup the phone) and it always receives emails instantly through push.
Update 2: My wife's S7 apparently has this same issue since it updated. She often doesn't receive facebook notifications since it updated her phone to nougat. She just assumed it was the facebook app that was bugged. Yikes! Not sure how this hasn't become a bigger issue, surely there are tons of people that need reliable push notifications for various apps. Hopefully my fix above works as a band-aid until a broader fix is implemented.
My Galaxy s7 edge was updated to Nougat for good few months before I got the S8. However I have not experienced similar issues. Most of the apps did not need to reload every time I switch between them. I am not bothered about getting an email a couple of minutes late, but browsing news, or wifi streaming music to an external player is non usable at the moment. It looses conection, reload pages, every time I scroll down on Facebook and swithch between apps, it seems as it goes back to the top of the news feed, loosing where I left it.
A week ago I was watching on YouTube a comparison between iPhone, S8, pixel and some other crap, and surprisingly on a speed test and re-opening the already open apps, the Galaxy S8 came as last as it seems that needed to reload all apps again. You can imagine the shock I had, since I don't like iPhone, but it came first, nearly twice faster.
Need a fix soon, as I already give my Galaxy S7 edge to the wife. Can't get it back.

Try my suggestion in the post above yours, see if that helps. So far, I haven't missed any notifications, but it's too soon to tell, and I haven't had my phone in my pocket, but on my desk.
I know you can cherry pick some apps and exclude them from being monitored, and power optimised. However, not all apps are listed under "+add apps" for example Chrome, Upday, Facebook and many more.

No problem. It was in a weird spot. Seems to be working great so far, I'm back to instant notifications, something that wasn't happening before. Will give it a few days til I call the all clear.
Still annoying we have to do this at all. Hope Google gets it fixed. I saw people complaining about it back in August, so I'm not too hopeful of anything immediate.
I would say my fix works. I have received every notification in a timely manner. Updating the first post to reflect this.
I resolved my gmail not in push mail mode by simply removing the re-adding the accounts.
I did that on Google Inbox app as I have issues getting any email notifications. Still not receiving any!
I deleted the app, deleted cache, put it as priority, removed from optimize battery list, everything! Still no notifications for email via Inbox! WTF
Posting just to say I already have made sure gmail isn't being put to sleep but I'm also not getting mail notifications reliably on my S8+. Missed work emails on more than a few occasions by hours because of this.
Ok I was able to fix it finally by: Deleting Google Account and re-adding again.
Email (Inbox app) notification work now

Closing Idle apps on Screen off

Hi,
It has been a while since I have been able to play with custom ROMs as my previous phone was not well supported.
I have just now switched over to the Axon 7 and have just started setting it up as my daily driver. I Installed NucleaROM with LIGHT PATCH, Open GApps and ARISE Sound System. All seems to be working fine but I have one issue and I think it may be a feature from not just the Custom ROM of choice but the underlying source (ResurrectionROM/LineageOS).
When I first setup the phone, it had an option on the lock screen to customize how apps are closed (i believe the term was Smart Close) when the device is idle and the screen is off. I remember looking through it and having options for which apps are closed and which are to remain running.
Since then I have installed a collection of apps, one of which is the Garmin Connect which I need to run when the screen is off.
I am unable to find how to get to these options now. I have looked through the power options and cannot see it.
If anyone can help me, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks for your assistance.
As I have started to use the phone a little more I have noticed that this is having another effect.
It seems to be closing my keyboard app so every time I unlock it goes back to the stock keyboard and I need to select SwiftKey again.
I hope someone knows where these settings are.
I have found a workaround for now, but if anyone knows how to control the SmartBattery application, it would be greatly appreciated.
I believe this function is coming from the System App called Smart Battery. I have gone into Settings -> Apps then selected the menu to show system apps. From there I was able to locate the SmartBattery app and disable it.
This seems to be working for me as by Garmin Fitness tracker was losing BlueTooth to the phone before but not now with that app disabled.
I'm not entirely positive about this, as I've never heard of that app. At first, I thought you were talking about the screen lock cleaning feature from the power manager on stock. After your follow up post indicating you had actually found reference to the app on your system and a bit of Googling, I was able to find some reference to it. Nothing useful, I'm afraid.
Try using an app that can launch activities, like Nova Launcher or Tasker. Try to find the app in the list, and see if you can launch it by calling for one of its activities.
P.S., if you're running RR, if you have a look at the extended settings, there might be a way to set the nav keys long-press action to a custom activity. Remember to enable the app, otherwise it might not show up in any lists.
