Having used the LineageOS, PE, and Paranoid Android builds for this phone, with all of them it seems like the front camera motor automatic retraction is bugged.
When the camera is opened, and I change a setting to another front camera mode (e.g. Camera to Portrait mode in any GCam version), it tells the camera to try and open again, while already open.
This makes a terrible sound, and I doubt this is good for the longevity of the motor. Does anyone else have/had this problem? Is it something fixable? Unfortunately I can't do low-level programming, otherwise i'd try to fix it myself.

Hey guys/gals, while chatting about the constant autofocus on the camera yiancar suggests we try other camera apps.
He installed "fxcamera" and said it has an autofocus toggle. And suggested I try it.
So I download and loaded it, selected the normal camera, it started autofocusing even without tapping the screen or selecting the autofocus toggle.. Making that focus clicking sound.
His does not... I remember there being mentioned somewhere that they were having issues with quality control with the cameras, don't know if this has anything to do with it.
So if you have a chance, could you please download "fxcamera" and test your camera's autofocus and report your findings here? (mention if your unit does or does not auto focus click constantly, which model, and rom version you're on)
Thanks in advance!
Hi clockcycle
My camera does the continuous autofocus only in difficult light situations, for example in a dimmed lecture hall. When I have enough contrast in the picture it just perform the autofocus when I moved the camera/tablet. This happens with the standard camera app and I also tested fxcamera - the same result.
Can you find a light scenario where your constant autofocus stops?
stefan
Hey all!
I normal only get one long autofocus unless light is really low (very similar to strahl actually) and fxcamera makes no difference (with autofocus turned off and on)
Thia is from an Adam rooted and running utopia.
Please excuse the awful spelling on the above. I'm too new on this forum to be trusted with the edit button yet!
hi CC,
Just want to report to all that I m using EdenX 2.4 rom which is based on latest NI rom 040811. And in this latest rom NI has fixed the constant refocusing of camera issue. I have tested it and camera stops refocusing after few seconds of delay.
now some hacker/developer might want to take on this.. to help us..to get a toggel switch in camera app for manual and auto options...
@clockcycle I would second whatever strahl's mentioned. Seems to work the same for me too.
On a separate note, one bloke in a thread at tabletrom opened up adam, disconnected the auto focus motor of the camera and he's put up a video after doing it. The camera is now fixed focus and works well for him.
I report 3rd then as someone whose camera will keep focusing in bright areas such as a classroom or when pointed upwards towards any lights.
I can also report that while pointing into dimmer directions the camera stops auto-focusing.
While I think that opening it up and disconnecting the wire is cool, I don't want to have to do that to mine.
What files/drivers work with the camera, can we not just replace the ones that are in the working updates with our current roms?
Hello, recently I've been experiencing problems with my camera. If I open up the camera app most times I can feel the autofocus trying to adjust itself but more times than not it won't and I'll get a ripple effect. What I'm wondering is the autofocus built into the camera or built into the phone. I'm not too concerned about having to replace the camera but autofocus may be a totally different task.
I don't know if I dropped my ze551kl too many times or something happened while flashing, but the back camera does not work at all now. When I launch the pixel camera or any camera app, it launches the front camera. The led flashlight no longer works either. Can anyone offer any suggestions to troubleshoot or is this a hardware problem that is probably unfixable?
Anyone else having issues getting Camera unavailable? I can use third party camera apps and access both rear cameras.
But if I use the stock one and switch to the rear camera I get "Camera Error" Camera Unavailable.
I also had that today for the stock video but trying a second time it worked.
Yea mine just keeps doing it over and over, OpenCamera runs both cameras just fine, but doesn't see the front camera lol, front camera works fine and non-wide rear works fine on stock app.
I tried to run a full KDZ reset, but it doesn't let me refurbish, only upgrade, so if there is something wrong with the files in there, I fear they may not have been fixed.
Have you tried uninstalling OpenCamera and see if it goes away? I had this happen on an older phone, after a reboot it would work, come to find out, another app was holding the camera open
Yea I've tried using a fully reset phone, after digging more it looks like if the camera is in "Selfie Mode" the rear cameras work, but it's like if the selfie camera is no longer being detected by anything.
Hello
I have installed havoc OS 2.9 on my A2017G and recently I have replaced my front camera because I had lost the glass and damaged the lenses.
My issue is that, with the new one, apps do not change orientation when I rotate my phone except in the default camera app and gcam takes green pictures.
I don't know if it is the rom's fault because my old camera was already broken when I installed havoc but I did not have issues with other roms.
Has anyone ever had a similar issue and is there a way to fix it?
Thanks

This is most definitely the ROM acting up, and not because of your front camera replacement. Try flashing a different ROM to fix the screen orientation issue.
As for the green pictures, that happens on some ports of GCam. It's easily fixable by using a different port of the app.
