For the past several months I've enjoyed being able to transfer files from my PC to my Shield via my home network. It was simple, I had a network drive pointed at \\SHIELD and it would give me 2 folders, Internal Storage and my 8TB HDD that was attached to the Shield's USB port. I could convert my videos and as soon as they were done, I could drag and drop them to the appropriate folder on the Shield's HDD.
BUT... since yesterday when I updated the Shield to Experience 8.0, my external drive, or any other drive that I connect to the shield no longer shows up via my network. \\SHIELD is still accessible, but it only shows the internal storage. I have tried about everything I can think of, rebooting, ejecting the drive, turning on and off sharing on the Shield, and nothing works. Is there some new setting I'm missing? Bug with 8.0? Or a feature that was removed for some ungodly reason?
Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.
Just tried on mine. Looks like that domain name has been changed, now is SHIELDANDROIDTV. You can try with IP.
I couldn't connect with SMB 2 but with SMB 1 is connecting, asking for password but even I enter correct one, asking again...
I've tried from tablet which can access two NAS shares without problem.

I tried with IP and it accepts my user/pass, but it still only shows the internal storage. Using \\SHIELDANDROIDTV returns nothing.
So after some further testing, I've found it to be an even more bizarre bug. The external HDD will show up if you unplug the Shield's Ethernet cable for a few seconds and plug it back in. I have no idea why this would solve the issue, but it does, only temporarily though. After a random amount of time the External drive will no longer be visible to any computer on my network. However, the internal store always stays visible. To fix it again, I walk over to the Shield and unplug it's Ethernet cable and plug it back in. Bam, External HDD shows up again. I am still very confused as to why this temporarily solves the issue. It gets annoying having to do it every 30 minutes or so.
It's a bug in samba implementation. Report to Nvidia so they can fix it in the next update.

Anyone else having this problem? When your MT4G is first started the device is seen on your PC as Disk Drive but once you disconnected and try to reconnected later time it does not work as it only gives charging option.
By mounting and unmounted the SDCard, selecting USB connection type manually from USB setting does not help also. Only way to resolve this is by restarting MT4G fully as SDCard works again under Disk Drive without any issue.
I have not experienced this. I also keep my MT4G set to default to "charge only" on PC connection since it usually sits on my desk charging while I am at my PC. Very rarely do I need to hook up to move things on the SD card, usually I just do it across my WiFi and LAN with EStrongs file manager.
Hi I have side loaded Kodi and some plugin using a otg cable to a 8gb thumb drive.
It worked well for a week or so and now it seems to stopped access and only see thumb drive but greyed out so I can click on it. All software works well just not being able to see usb drive mounted on Nexus
I am able to see the external drive from my router and access file using es explorer. I also been helping a friend set his up and the same thing happened to his. Maybe the update closed this door?
The device is not rooted, Have tried different drives even mybook 1 tb powered drive.

I have a mynet900 router with usb and Nexus player will access these files.
I wish I could get them to read directly from the micro usb.

I just got a Shield Pro (only due to the fact that I was able to get the Pro with the remote and stand for $244) and I'm trying to connect my NFTS 3TB external hard drive, but it won't mount. I read somewhere the Shield can't recognize a hard drive with multiple partitions so I extended the original partition and now there is only one, but it still won't mount no matter what I do.
Any thoughts, tips, tricks or advice on how to get it mounted will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for rubbing it in.
Sorry if this sounds partitioning but at 3tb sounds like it must be externally powered. I'm assuming its powered up and you can hear it spinning up? I would also try a different usb cable even if that cable works on the PC. Stranger things have been known to happen.

Thanks! I'm not sure what you're saying about partitioning, but the external drive drive is externally powered and I can hear it spinning up. I'll try another cable when I get home tonight. That would be great if that was the only issue.
Thanks again.
No probs thats my damn autocorrect, I meant "patronising"
I have tried a 2TB Toshiba, a 2TB WD Passport, and a 4TB Samsung portable hard drive. All of them are 2.5" hard drives and all of them are self-powered (not plugged into an external source for power). All of them work without any trouble. They are formatted in NFTS and have only 1 partition. Maybe it's your brand of hard drive that is not working on your Shield TV.
Where did you get that deal on the pro? EBay?

Amazon. I was shocked when I saw the price for a Pro with all those accessories. Plus the seller never registered everything and I got the warranty too.
I haven't had any issues connecting am external HD to my Shield Pro. I have an old Western Digital 500gb drive, a Samsung EVO Pro 250gb SSD and a 1TB Western Digital HD and all of them connect just fine. The 1tb HD requires a external power source but it still works without any issues. I use ES File Explorer to access the HD if that helps at all. I also had no issues with any of my flash drives 8gb-128gb from various manufactures.

Thanks. I tried both ports, but it still doesn't work for me. I'm still waiting for a new cable to see if that works since I don't seem to have any other USB 3.0 cables to try.

It could be the cable but I couldn't tell you for sure. If it still doesn't work after that maybe a factory reset or a reflashing of the images may be in order. Something could be corrupted cashing the issue but that scenario is a more severe remedy to the small issue.
UPDATE: Although I tried to repair the drive on my WIn 8.1 mini-desktop, it wasn't until I connected the external drive to my AIO with Win 10 that the external drive was repaired (which took a maybe a minute) and now I can access my external drive.
Now for my bonus question (that I will create a new thread for as well). Is there anyway to access the external drive or the Pro's 500GB drive from my network? I can see it as SHIELD on my network and I can see the IP address, but I can't seem to access it. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

If your Shield Device is rooted, you can always give Servers Ultimate Pro (comes up as the Amazon free app of the day quite often) a try & setup a simple SMB server. You would probably need Server Pack B (this is free). I actually have this setup on my Nexus Player with Stickmount.

Install ES file manager. Run the remote control section inside and it will run a ftp server on the sheild. You can then ftp in with filezilla or something and access the files. No root needed, but you need to enable the sever each time you want to transfer files etc :good:

Put the IP address in the address bar...in the format 192.168.1.?? And make sure you have the right port number in the port box... ES file manager screen will show you the address and port number. I'm guessing you haven't put the port number in

Thanks. I actually did do that. I guess I have to keep trying.
This is going to sound odd, but if you are on ethernet, try using wireless to transfer files. Most FTP programs won't start a server on ethernet as they are programmed for wireless only. They think phones and if a phone is not wireless it's mobile network, and therefor don't turn on server. Worked for me on both ES and Solid Explorer wireless, but neither wired.
I'm having the same problem as topic creator. Using a self-powered 3 TB WD Passport, and cannot get it to mount on the Shield no matter how I format it (FAT32, EXFAT, NTFS both MBR and GPT). It reads on every other device and PC I have just fine.

ES File Explorer even recognizes the presence of a USB drive, but gives a "failed to open file" error when attempting to access it. Android's storage manager doesn't see the drive at all.
Hey everybody, surprise surprise...I found an issue with the new adoptable storage feature in Android M on our beloved nexus player. I used an OTG cable to connect a 16GB Sandisk flash drive and the player recognized it and I was able to format it as internal storage.
I then installed The Walking Dead game to test out performance. I was actually surprised to find the performance to be more than acceptable so I downloaded all the episodes of the game. While the last episode was downloading my nexus player said it lost connection to my wifi. I checked and my wifi was running fine on every other device in my house so I figured I'd restart the nexus player to see if that cleared up the issue. It rebooted and I was connected again, however this is where I found the problem...
The game had disappeared as if it had never been installed. It wasn't on the homescreen or in the settings under Apps. It had completely vanished. Even under the Storage settings, the flash drive showed 14GB instead of the 12.9GB it was showing after I had installed the game originally.
I reinstalled the game and then restarted the nexus player to test. It happened again.
Has anyone else encountered this? If so, is there a reason that things just disappear after a restart? Is it a user error?
Please help if you can as I was excited about the possibility of actually having an adequate amount of storage on this device. 8GB is a joke...
It seems your USB is it write protect mode. You may need to have it forget the storage, reformat it on a computer, and then reinsert it into the nexus player. Ive encountered that issue on other operating system, especially if I formatted a drive so it seems android isn't an exception
I'm having all sorta of issues with external and internal storage. I have a USB otg cable with multiple ports I have 32gb flash drive setup as internal storage and a 1tb harddrive as external storage. When I plugged the flash drive in it connected fine, and set it up, then connected the harddrive and it instantly said the flash drive is not connected. So for some reason it kicked the flash drive off. I got the both to work by disconnecting the flash drive then reconnecting it. If I restart my nexus player, the it will boot up and the hard drive won't remount to it. But if I disconnect the power cable then it reboots and the hard drive stays mounted. But settings always says its not responding and asks me to exit it or wait.. Soo buggy. Pretty ****in redicolous its been around this long and its been buggy from the start.

For me everything is working, except for one issue - that might be happening to everybody: Once I reboot the Nexus Player, the USB storage doesn't automatically get re-mounted. I need to physically remove the USB stick and/or OTG cable and connect it again (while the Nexus Player is turned on). Since I usually don't reboot or shut off my Nexus Player, this is acceptable, but it's still not great. If this is designed properly, it should automatically remount it on every boot, as long as its connected.

I'm using a 64 GB drive (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LLEODCK) with this OTG cable (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00J631SU8) and don't see any issues. The problem that I am facing is, Nexus player doesn't recognize the drive if I connect it via a USB hub.

Hello, I have shield tv 2017. I moved the installation files to a usb stick as storage or rather internal memory, for a long time.
By mistake, I simply unplugged the USB key from the Shield TV. I haven't used the option to unplug from Storage. Since then it is no longer recognized by the Shield. Nor by a pc.
I had in particular all the metadata of the server plex on it. Plex no longer connects to the server (nas) and I am really afraid of having lost all the metadata ... (working days ....)
The shield no longer sees the USB key.
Do you think there is a way to recover files from this key? A method, a utility can be?
I really hope you can help me.
Did you try powering off your shield tv, and then plugging your USB back in and powering back on?
