Picked this phone up today despite the complaints. The first thing I noticed is the sound. The included head phones sound pretty good, but on my bose head set it feels like my face is melting. I don't know what they changed between the S6 and the note 5 yet but holy cow. Keep giving it to me.
So it sounds better?

I wouldn't say I have a "golden ear" but it definitely has better high's, better lows, and more drool coming out of my mouth from the sound. So I would say yes.

the next update for the s6 and the edge has the audio improvement update in it
Totally agree...i use Gear circle and Gear level U wireless buds and the sound is amazing and so much louder with my note 5 compared to my Note Edge...love it
Any idea if the boosted headphone sound works for bluetooth enabled headphones like the JayBird X2?
what about the call quality? In ear speaker loudness, loudness over speakerphone etc. I don't understand why these things are always almost not mentioned in any reviews, it is a phone first of all, right?
I also noticed that the sound in my via Bluetooth is much louder and clearer. I'm very happy with it.

yes the new note five will be running a higher bit rate for audio which will make audio sound better. More so if you have higher quality music files. Makes me happy you posted about this because I heard about the improved audio and now I know its true if others are posting about it
The.sound is excellent

Yes just got my Note 5 yesterday also and did some testing between my iPhone 6 plus and LG G4 and the Note 5. The Note 5 is definitely the clear winner. The LG G4 is definitely sounding compressed, not sure why LG did this as the LG G2 had superb audio and was known for that. I honestly think the king now is the Note 5! ?

Anyone comparing the sound to the S6 or S6 edge? I have the S6 edge and the audio quality is not good, especially over bluetooth. Using the bletooth in my car or over my bluetooth speaker sounds hissy and pretty terrible while the same car and speaker sounded great with the htc one m8.

I agree with everything you said and I had those same devices. The only one that comes close to the Note 5 for me is the Sony Z3+, but I have so many complaints about that device that I'm not going to keep it. Anyway, my findings match yours and I couldn't be happier.

Not sure if this helps you since I don't use BT, but with IEMs via the headphone jack I find the Note 5 to be warmer and fuller sounding with less emphasis on treble like the S6 Edge I have. Also, while I initially thought the "UHQ Upscaler" was going to be a gimmick, it adds a surprising amount of punch to the audio! Overall, I'm like a kid in a candy store with this thing. I should also mention I use several high-end pairs of IEMs (Sony XBA-A3, MDR-EX1000, Dunu DN-2000j, etc.).

Sound is noticeably better but after using m8 and Nexus 6 nothing to write home about

Why must Samsung insist on putting the speaker grill on the side where it covers it up.
Love the audio quality I am so happy. So happy.
The UHQ setting is actually enabling 192khz hardware output on the audio chip.

hey buddy you seems like an audiophile....do you think note 5 sound matches those of some dedicated players like fiio x3 ?
and do you know exactly what is done internally when we switch on the UHQ Upscaler ?
and do you or anyone knows what DAC is used this time in Note 5 ?

Hi there - I'm not an audiophile, but I do appreciate a good, quality output. I actually haven't used a dedicated player; the most I've done is got an E17 DAC/Amp for headphones, but it wasn't worth the trouble for me personally.
The DAC is anyone's guess, but it should be Wolfson (as were most, if not all the Samsungs before it with Exynos processors).
Cheers,

I haven't tried the E17 with the Note 5 yet, but I suspect it will only make it louder. I'll give it a try tonight. E18 would be the better choice for the Note 5, but oh well

Tested this yesterday back to back with old HD2 on WM6.5.5 os stock music player .
Both devices had same mp3 HQ 320kb tracks loaded & tested via 3.5mm to phono input on my amp.
Hd2 was far better sound depth detail and clarity, night and day difference, even using other music apps on GR5 made no major improvement .
Lot of modern hardware may look good on paper but it lacking big time if start doing comparisons with quality old tech devices.
Will be donating this GR5 when find something more interesting & possibly WM10 based as android seem never make real progress ...

I can't believe that HD2 sound better than the 5x, interesting
I thought same but difference is MASSIVE :-/
difference on headset testing was what made do more testing.
Tested 6 identical HQ 320 mp3 tracks via 3.5mm input to marantz pm6005 amp.
amp setting/volume constant & only handset tweaking to get sound improvement .
GR5 not alone in poor audio in modern device arena .
Wow, simply WOW
If you're serious about audio quality, why even use the device's internal DAC? There are many portable DAC/amp combos nowadays, and if you have the Marantz I doubt you'd mind spending $100-200 on one

Hm... Is money the issue? Or is portability? I recently bought the FiiO A9 amp, it's really cheap on AliExpress. You could buy a FiiO DAC/amp combo for less than $100. For instance, the Q1 DAC/amp is available for around $90, and it's gotten pretty good reviews on Head-Fi.
I have personally found that the honor's DAC is much better than my PC's, but I haven't compared it to other phones.

Just read a review that claims only Korean models of the G6 have HiFi DAC? Is that true? I just bought a G6 from AT&T because of their 50% discount, and I took it for granted that HiFi DAC will be featured. Anyone to confirm?
No quad DAC. U.S. version has wireless charging instead.
Never mind. I found the answer somewhere else. I am returning the phone and f**k you LG.
There's plenty of confirmation all over the internet mate. Never take things for granted.

LMAO @ blaming LG for your stupidity.
Well its his fault for not reading before he purchased the phone, but its LG's fault that the phone didnt have the DAC in the 1st place. I love the phone, i like the phisical design and feel more than the S8 and S8+ however I do hate that LG chose for me that we people in America dont like/need the dac. Its just plain stupid on LG's part. They should have equipped the phone the best they could to fight the S8, not cripple it from the get go. As it is im happy with my G6 and will keep it, but i would be way more happier and satisfied if it had the DAC included.

Yes I too am really pissed at LG for excluding the DAC here. For that reason I won't get rid of my V10. When V10 gets Nougat there is a chance I will sell my G6 instead.
I've been using VLC with my library of flac music files I transferred to a new 128gb Samsung microsxdc card ($30.99 on Amazon ftw!) and the built in 10 band equalizer over Bluetooth in my car. Just to report, the sound quality is just as good as plugging the phone into the aux port via the headphone jack. Very impressed with the sound quality on my Fender Audio System. I just wish LG would have included a nice set of headphones like the S8 plus received. I bought the S8 plus for a relative and she gave me the S8 plus AKG headphones. I was able to install the Comply TX-400 Isolation Plus earphone tips I had been using on a cheap pair of smokin' buds that I use when I mow. The sound from the earphone port using VLC is also excellent. I highly recommend using VLC, I was skeptical at first, but it's free and the equalizer sounds great. I really didn't know how to use it at first, but I played around with the levels till I got it to my liking. I started out with "rock" and went from there.

Hi
I'm looking at options to get better sound on my S8. Does anyone know if the HTC U11 3.5mm adaptor with the built in DAC will be compatible with the S8 and if it will improve audio listening through spotify?
Has anyone tried this?
The adaptor is only £10 to buy so could be a cheap way to get better audio.
I'm not interested in rooting as I find samsung pay and secure folder useful so Viper isn't an option for me.

I currently use a Fiio E11 headphone amp. Its a little bit of bulk but the sound quality is night and day different. I am in the market for a new one soon as this thing is a good few years old and taken a beating, so I don't know if there is something better / smaller out now, but as and when I start looking I will update with any cool options I find
Funny, only reason I didn't switch from HTC 10 to U11 (and am considering S8) is the lack of normal headphone jack and that freaking dongle, lol

I just wish I could get my FiiO Q1 to work with my S8. I've tried the included USB C to USB adaptor that came with the phone, an aftermarket one, and a USB C to micro USB and none of them have worked. I might have to try this dongle.
Hi Guys;
Want to talk of the external DACs.
As we do not have jack on our phone, here a little list of compatible DAC.
Ibasso DC01 ~50$
Review
Unfortunatelly Ibasso says that there's some compatibility issues with Galaxy Series including Note.
It works very well on mine. N975F
Ibasso DC02 ("unbalanced version" of the DC01) ~50$
SMSL Idea ~85$

EarStudio ES100 ~99$

Audioquest DragonFly Cobalt ~299$
Review
Hidizs Sonata HD-D ~30$

I've an Ibasso DC01 and it's wonderfull. I never had a sound like this with a smartphone.

+1 for this DAC. I'm using it with Shure 845 earphones, connected with a balanced 2.5mm adapter listening to TIDAL Hi-Fi/Master music saved to my device. Simply superb! i travel 43+ weeks a year and this music combination makes the long commutes (3+hour flights) easier to tolerate.

I use the Fiio BTR3 as well, great little DAC/AMP especially once you enable the LDAC codec in dev options and stream HiFi audio with a source like TIDAL. Paired it with 1MORE Quad Driver earbuds that run 32Ohm impedance which the BTR3 is able to output.

Yup, although I am using Etymotic Er4XR with this. I unfortunately am using Apple Music, stuck in their ecosystem. But sounds great so far with LDAC!
Question, do you have the ability to change the LDAC settings to highest quality in dev options? I tried but it keeps reverting to best effort?
I have Hidizs Sonata using exynos model. Best sound Ive ever heard using my Westone W60's. Even better than my previous LG V30. Large soundstage and very loud. I didn't expect this but I'm very happy about it.
I found a cheap $7 adapter/DAC and it plays nicely with my KZ earbuds (supports 24bit/384). Before I was looking into the UP4, BTR5, etc. But for now I'll hold off buying more expensive gear.

I have a pair of se845s as well. I just bought the Shure usb-c to mmcx cable which obviously has a DAC built in. It's a beautiful thing. Sound is perfectly balanced with minimal hissing (which was a problem for me using other DACs on these sensitive monitors). I was struggling until I got these, now I don't care if a phone has a headphone jack or not.
