[Q] Should I root my Galaxy S2?

Hello all,
I just picked up a Galaxy S2 and have been using it with stock for a while now. I've wondered whether or not I should root the phone. The only reason or thing i would consider doing is under clocking to get better battery life.
Should I root it for that? Is there a rom which is better than the samsung stock rom because I like the stock quite a bit.
Thanks in advance.
I don't think underclocking would get you a better battery life more than disabling some services or push emails...
So yes, I suggest root for disabling services... SGSII sleep mode does good job either way...
Hello,
This is what I've done to get a better battery life :
Get VillainRom 2.0 (you need to root your mobile for that), it really increase the battery life, and this is in my opinion the best thing to do.
Underclock your phone with setcpu.
Of course you should set your phone with basic parameters, like no GPS, no Sync, low brightness.
Cheers

Well i know on the Desire Z (my old phone) I under clocked to 384 MHz and i got like 4 days battery life. I wasn't doing much intensive stuff on the device during that time but it was an improvement. As for the S2 I was able to get 1 day 4 hours and it was down to 5% with medium/light usage.
I was looking at MIUI youtube video and it looks pretty sweet, although the thread states some things still need to be done. Are their some ROMs which are 100% working order and bring some good benefits/hacks/tweaks?
What about the leak of the 2.3.4 update, i wonder how that is..
i used set cpu on my galaxy s to set cpu to 800mhz...made quite a big difference to the battery life...will.consider using it again on my gs2.

I think you should root and either flash a ROM which is known for good battery life, or at least use Titanium Back up (requires root) to remove/freeze(paid only) bloatware. There is a list of safe apps to remove stickied.
Mine is Rooted
I rooted my phone the first day I got it because I want to use Titanium Backup to freeze wi-fi sharing apps to save battery.
Just root it. If you're here, you're considering rooting your phone. Add custom ROMs and root-only apps and try everything out. The cooks have done some impressive stuff. If you want to return it, unroot it.
My first phone ever that really didn't need a custom rom. The phone just does everything well. I use titanium backup and freeze apps I don't use.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Doing the same here. Don't think I'll go with a custom ROM, but I damn sure want to be able to freeze some (stock) apps
Probably a silly question but how do you root?
Must admit am very happy with the device and when you think what it's doing no wonder the battery depletes, but it's not that bad, can I read more about this rooting?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Ah that's a good point. I can root and don't have to use a custom rom but can if I felt like it. That's pretty good I think i'll do that
And what is this "freezing" apps?
Noobie question .How to unroot it and return to original kernel so that the service centre guy does not come to know that it has been rooted??
Yeah, i want to know if root is really usefull too !
I don't wanna switch to a custom ROM wich is not optimized for dual core, or doesn't contains some cool apps like Samsung Kies, or not being able to play some media files...
Noob spotted.
Yes you really have to root in order to get rid of the wifi sharing battery drain problem of the SGS2 which will eat away as much as 20 percent battery per day. With root you can also use apps like chainfire, ad free and titanium backup
I have rooted and underlocked my phone battery life has greatly improved.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
I want to root my phone but after downloading my stock kernel is saw it is a zImage... any help?
Also i found my stock firmware ... so if i switch to a custom one i can go back...but all the files are .bin, disc image files or lfs files.... i can't find information on how to flash with that.
greetz
*** studpid winrar showed the .tar file as a winrar file so i extracted it.... problem solved ***
I've been rooted since day 1 and I love it.

[NEWBIE] Owner of HTC M8, 1st Android..in few years

Hello,
Ive had Lumia 930 last 2 years and before Lumia 800,even before old Huawei Honor and now I got new HTC One M8 (930 display broke). So I want from you guys a help/guide/tips
1. Is it worth of rooting? If yes, what are those bootloader unlocks, S-ON unlocks, etc.? Do I need them, what is the purpose and which order
2. a) If I stay un-rooted, what are best ways to protect/optimize/use as much of the phone as possible?
b) If I root, same as above..(best ways to optimize, etc.)
3. Some general tips/apps for kepping phone "in good health"?
For the few who decide to help me "re-introduce" into Android world, really thanks you
P.S.: English not my native language, I hope you understand anyway

Hey, welcome to Android again and the HTC One M8 community!
1) Rooting your HTC One M8 gives you more privileges and customization's for your device, customs ROMS, Kernels etc. Is it worth it? Sort of, it really depends how much your gonna use it and if your really into Android such as the operating system, KitKat, Lollipop, Marshmallow, Nougat etc and if you are into getting to know the device in a more customizable way.
2A) The best way to protect the device is to get a nice new shiny but hard trusted case, amazon is a good place to pick one up. As for optimization you can find apps on the Google Play market and on XDA which can help to speed your device up and reduce battery consumption without needing root. Also for use, I am not really sure. Just see how you get along with the phone and try to use it as best as you can and be careful to not let it drop etc.
2B) With root the best way to optimize it would be to look around on XDA for forums regarding this as their are many more people who really get into it. First thing to do is find a decent but good/trusted ROM, if you want pure Android I would recommend the new CM14.1 ROM for your device (found in the android development section.) Kernels are also a good way, they can change everything from clock speed all the way to background tasks when the phone is off, I believe, but do not quote me on that! Other apps can be found on the Google Play store which can help battery with root and speed etc. For the health of the phone, I would advise against not over-clocking the CPU speed, as it reduces the phones life dramatically and bad for the battery, best to keep to pre-built kernel on your choice of ROM to be safe.
3) Best tips are as above really, just look out for dodgy apps and any apks downloaded off market just be careful and make sure their from a reliable source. Also check when your latest security build was on your phone, that is why I recommend the CM14.1 ROM as it has the latest security as its Android 7.1 Nougat. Also have a heavy duty case as mentioned above and keep any eye out for to much over heating.
Hope I helped, if you need anything else do not hesitate to reply to me,

Ohhhh Thank you  , I am glad someone is so nice to me and explain it to me like you
Well, Custom ROMs, I dont plan on using another ROM (stock optimalized/full custom), but Ive seen some good (I think ) one, and for me it seemed like if I ever gonna install ROM, it will be that STeam HTC 10 Port(at least I think it will be Android N when its 10 port..) - What you think about it? Otherwise I think I just stay on stock+root because my logic for it is "if Custom ROM, at least Android N + even better with Sense"
About rooting, I know there is (at least been) Xposed Framework, and from old times, I really liked it, so that would be 1st reason for rooting for me, and 2nd is Greenify - which really helped me on old 500mb RAM phone, but should I use it also for M8? (I am using it right now with non-root mode)
About cleaners, etc. I have Greenify and first 2 days had HTCs Boost+ and Ccleaner but I uninstalled them because Ive seen something about cleaners isn't good for Android (That why I use only Greenify - that's not really a cleaner I think), but you tell me please - Should I stick with Greenify or start using Boost+/Ccleaner/other cleaner?
About case, Ive got one plastic-rubber-like case (Original HTC?) included with phone, and I planned to "upgrade" to Dot View later, so u tell that I should buy an hard-one? Or can I stay with "original case"/Dot View?
Cleaners are OK I guess, but some are bad for the phone, same with RAM boosters. Greenify is different though, it doesn't damage your phone. The HTC one though I guess can be trusted, it seems legit and I would doubt they would release a crappy one! Root with greenify is much better though, a lot better and more control with the app as to be expected with full system root.
As for the case, I really don't know. The dot case won't protect as well as speigen cases etc but does look nice! :good: Its really up to you, I just use a plastic see through one so I can show the scratched One M8 metal body. Planning to get a new phone soon, perhaps the Moto G4 or G4 Plus.

Is it really worth root and use custom roms?

I'm thinking in root my device but I have some doubt about it and I want to hear your opinion. All my old devices i've rooted because of performance, memory, vga improvements, but in my S8 i'm worried about root and loose the guarantee. Those custom rooms really makes difference in performance, battery e the others stuffs? Worth the risk?
Thanks!!
PS.:sorry for bad english
I haven't yet, but I'm also on a snapdragon variant where it would mean losing 20% of my battery. If I had an exynos I'm sure I would. For custom roms, depends what you're looking for. They can add a lot of features and functionality.
P.s. - your english is great
for me (where I live there is just the exynos variant) it is totally worth it. All android devices i owned so far had all custom roms on it - for me it is more of a customisation thing, rather than an extreme performance increase - at least on the s8 because it IS already pretty fast and snappy. Sure here and there a bit faster and maybe with increasing the animation speed even more (at least for the eye). But what I love is just that I can make anything look like I want to. And other things like a stereo speaker mod puts the cherry on top of the cake.
for me the answer is YES it is worth it. the customisation and performance on a custom rom is so much better than stock. add to that dual speaker mod and the camera mod and i am 100% glad i rooted.
NO ,In the end, stock is always the best. you have guarantee. and s8 is good and fast enough. custom Rom always bugs bugs bugs
you can make arguments both ways, I recently rooted my S8 (Exynos) after having it for 3 months, I had no issues with it stock but did like the idea of installing the camera mod, speaker mod etc and the ability to debloat (not just freeze) bloat apps. So I'm enjoying it but I enjoyed while it was stock too. I you enjoy tweaking your phone then for sure its worth it, if not, the S8 is awesome stock too.
Glad of read all those answers. I have Exynos variant and I'm asking this just because my cellphone have some "issues" that are bothering me, like battery drain(main issue for me), volume of the speaker, BT Audio really sucks and a lot of other little things. My guarantee ends in March 2018 so I'm thinking about it now.
If anyone have another opinion, please, share with us!
I have always rooted my HTC phones but after i got the S8 i didn't cos it's fast enough without root, and with root the pay apps don't work here in DK.
Nope . Dont root or change rom of your phone . If you are facing issues like battery drain then reset your phone or change firmware like install different region stock pda .
I am using adshell which force me to make and use samsung developer account , so i have root kind of access of adshell for 3 months using Knox key which is so awesome . I can disable all the bloat also now using adshell.
if you are curious about custom roms you can just root and stay on the stock rom. There are already a bunch of apps like substratum to theme and customize the stock rom the way you like it. And you can also flash camera/stereo speaker mod

Just wanted to mention, that your BT Audio Issues won´t be fixed with a custom ROM, since they are usually using the Stock Samsung Bluetooth Stack. Speakervolume and batterylife can be better with Custom ROMS and Mods.
I´m curious, what BT issues are you experiencing? I´m using BT Headphones almost everyday and I´m happy with it.

On the Exynos version, the root loses 20% of the battery?
I want to root and stay on the stock rom
What is the easiest way?
Thank you very much if you answer

I dont experienced any kind of battery loss after rooting. Pretty much the same, if not better (with renovate ice custom rom).
Rooting alone does nothing with your battery consumption - you just have more permissions on your filesystem. And when you change the look of your UI with substratum for example, there is also not more battery drain because you just change (mostly image) files - nothing thats runs in the background. Correct me if I am wrong.
And with mods like Camera/speaker mod you will also dont notice any significant change (maybe 2% less a day).
Here is how you root your exynos s8:

Thanks for reply. Is not an issue, is more like and desapointment because volume of music in BT or even in headphones its low to me. Iphone of my girlfriend have a better amplification and quality I guess.
But ok, you guys have encourage me, I'll root my phone and install a custom ROM. What is the best ROM for you? Battery life, performance and sound/camera?
I am going to go for yes. I have the international model for rooting.
What do I gain:
Slightly better battery life
Slightly better camera performance
Better sound performance
One-stop disabling of unused OEM apps
Custom clock and battery icons (I cannot tell you how much, after 5 years of seeing 5:00, I do not want to see 5:00pm or 17:00 on my status bar).
Taste of other Samsung roms (like S8 on S7, N8 on S8, S9 on S8).
Titanium Backups of apps
T-mobile US VOLTE support on international phone.
What do I lose:
Full warranty support
Certain banking or credit card apps
Automated updates
I´m using Batman ROM since the first release and it´s just awesome. Never had any Bugs (even after dirtyflashing updates) and the batterylife is just great.
BTW i´m currently using the google Camera port parallel to the Samsung camera and I´m surprised how good it is in comparison, just as a little tipp
First phone I have not rooted as I'm able to achieve a lot of customization without root. Yes there are some die-hard features I would love but rooting this phone vs not makes me more lean towards the not. One of the reason is loosing the guarantee and the other is loosing Samsung Pay. Once you trip the knox, the device is not eligible for Samsung Pay, even if you unroot it. Then again, if I were in a country without Samsung pay I probably would care less about tripping knox.

S8 stock audio quality is atrocious. I could never go back to a stock audio stack now. I use sauron+v4a+Atmos (axon 7 version). The Atmos is not used all the time (rarely these days) but the other two are used constantly

Hi friend. How're you?
Bat stock Rom and Batman rom are brilliant!

To root, or not to root.

So as the title says im rly woundering if i should.
Im a big fan of root, but some ppl on here have been reporting worser battery life. As well as losing the updates. Unless you return stock recovery and stuff. What im asking is what is your opinion. And for those with root, has there realy been worse battery or any performence drop ?
Thanks beforehand for your answers?
I'm getting this phone in less than 2 weeks and I always been a custom rom and root user. I will stay stock rom with Magisk, so I can enjoy Youtube without ads and install a host blocker to avoid ads and tracking in my entire phone (works even with Twitch, Google Chrome and games)
Do it! (at your own risk)
I've not noticed battery life drop because of it, if anything Xposed + Amplify have extended it. It's worth it just to have adaway back.
Performance didn't seem to change either.
I didn't enjoy the root experience with magisk though, a bit too buggy with a few things like getting adaway to stick after reboot and xposed would stop being active for no reason so I switched over to SuperSU.
True about updates, but until a major update is released it I can live with not having the incremental ones (as an ex Samsung user I'm not used to getting many updates anyway lol)
the larger battery usage is only at beginning until the phone completly adjusts the optimizations

is it recommended to root or even custom rom the galaxy a51?

Dear guys,
i'm thinking about rooting or installing even a nice custom rom on the samsung galaxy a51 i just recently bought last week. i'm not sure, but in the past on other phones like nokia 7.2 or even more earlier on sony xperia and htc, i always got problems after it. phone app didnt worked, apps crashed, stock launcher didnt work, camera quality is lower than before and such. the worst thing i ever experienced was the massive increase in battery consumption. my battery was empty in half of the time.
so how is it with galaxy a51? will it increase the experience or will i hate my decision of rooting or even better - custom rom'ing it? its more a question of opinion, since i know that it would be possible. i just dont want to ruin my new device and gain disadvantages from the things im doing. but maybe there is something good that can happen out of it, so i just simply as for your opinions and ideas
Hi!
I use the current firmware with root and get pleasure from it. Nothing flies out, everything works perfectly, the battery holds the same. But I'm having trouble assembling custom firmware (GSI), and I have one firmware, but I haven't tested it. But in the near future the performance of this firmware should be checked by another person. At the moment, topical custom firmware under the 4th. On custom firmware, surprisingly, I work many functions. But sleep did not like how the fingerprint scanner works (on some firmware is highlighted not a separate area of the screen, and the entire screen). In addition, there remains the question of the full performance of the cameras. In terms of performance, custom shells should be faster, but the Havoc I tested seemed to me to be two more glitchy than Samsung's own shell.
My opinion: if you like OneUI and you want ROOT - you can get a lot of stock firmware.
