Night mode is grey instead of black - Samsung Galaxy S10+ Questions & Answers

Hi guys!
Im currently on the Note 9 and i'll be switching to the S10+ in the next couple of days.
I noticed on my girlfriend's s10e that night mode is having a grey background, not completely black like on the Note.
I played with one s10+ in the store but due to strong lights i could not exactly see if it is grey or black, but it seemed grey.
Why is that so?
It's like a freaking bug and it looks awful comparing to the notes black version.

True gallery, messages, settings etc aren't 100% black also on my S10. Really don't understand why

Its Gray. Nothing like the Note 9. Funny how those paid YouTube reviewers fail to mention this.

Similar to what I thought when I first noticed it. But hey " it's a dynamic amoled" Oooo aaaaaaww. [emoji23]
Wondering if it's the panel type used or software that made the dark grey areas in settings much lighter? I dont know . But I did notice One UI Home process is present in gsam and device manager, I don't recall it being shown in the Note 9. Is it a new process?

Mine is black.

I did some researching. In fact also watched some YouTube videos and the greys do indeed look darker like my note 9 did in some videos.
But after reading a few reddit posters and Google searches I think that an update was recently put out , possibly the latest USA carrier firmware that lightened up the dark grey areas hence why it looks alot lighter now.
Hopefully folks can chime in that have had the USA s10+ since launch and whether they noticed a change of lightness to the dark grey areas mentioned in this post.

Just download any true black theme from store and set it, no reason to complicate over this.

That's what I'm talking about the " cards" part of the settings menu is grey. It was alot darker grey on my note 9 . If you look at some YouTube videos when a reviewer is using night mode and then in settings menu their's is dark gray. I think my research indicates that the April update or such changes the appearance of the dark grey cards area to a slightly lighter version to minimize chances of screen burn when having white on a very dark or black background.
Attached is Xda's TK Bay video, you can clearly see how dark those grey cards are on his device.

Not complicating anything nor complaing. I just wanted to see if it were indeed an update that did this, since early versions appears to be darker grey in areas mentioned.

The grey cards are from stock theme with night mode enabled. again that is how all my previous phones (s8+, s9+ and now s10+) are under stock theme with night mode enabled..

Night mode turned gray
I have the same (problem/issue?)
After updating my note8 to june 2019 s.u. my night mode turned to be gray not black anymore.
I compared it with my friends' note 8 with the same june 2019 update but her night mode is still black...

My s8 had a jet black dark mode. settings, notification panel, messages and even calculator was jet black and saved a lot of battery but suddenly yesterday it started to look grey with yelowish tint. in the sunlight it switched back to being black. but the funny thing is that i sent the screenshot of they grey color to my note 8 and it looked exactly black on note 8. but not on s8. Also the black color on rest of the apps is working fine while some apps like spotify and Gboard show yellow tint. this is driving me insane

Use synergy and substratum lite, download some themes and modify away.
Also you can use good lock with Quickstar which you can modify quick settings and notification colours.

Just an update to state samsung still persists with passing their turd gray color as dark mode almost everywhere. Playstore, settings cards, Samsung browser etc etc .... Compare playstore samsung v OnePlus 8 Pro, ironically even samsung browser is black on the OP8pro.

s8 owner here. i hate it and completely agree with "It seems like some low quality screen lcd panel with with constant backlight.."
idk how the timeline is so messed up. it just happened to me a couple months ago but it seems like some people has this issue over a year ago.
i do hate it though. i loved the deep black and if even the s10 and newer have this issue i may go to iphone. i lived for that deep black.

Black on SGSIII not totally black like SGS I

Hi all SGSIII owner, have you try open your phone in the dark room? Look at the black colour such as in the Settings menu. The black not so black, like the Super AMOLED still lighting not like my previous SGS I. I think, this also drink battery juice faster.
BUMP!
Oh noo!! What is that? I open facebook in my dark bed room last night, when I open a photo from my friend posting, and waiting the photo loading, normally I saw black background and animated circle. But today I noticed total black dots in the background.
I managed plotted the dots in Photoshop, it look like this:

Another one issue is dimming.
I test the dimming function from keyboard key-in *#0*#, it not dim like first time I test after I bought the phone. I test the red, green and blue screen still ok, no issue.
What should I do?
I would drink some more juice -
the dots are ink marks that have been known to exist on samoled. According to supercurio, it's a software related problem and should be fixed by his app soon.
back I the sgs day, i didn't have this problem until I flashed cm7, it started happening. I thought my screen had a burn I or dead pixel lol

yeah i feel the exact same thing..im not bothered bout the ink spots, thts hardly noticable....but the blacks not being deep enough, thts very visible in dark lighting with black wallpapers or videos with black backgrounf like when sumthn is loading n just the loading circle n black background or like when test, say the film cast is playing on a black background, the black just seems dark grey....
is this with all sgs3 panels???

the OP is not talking about black spots/blothches man ( his 1st post issue) , hes talking about the depth of black color ...its very dark grey and not deep black like on the s2 and even s1....u can notice it mainly in dim lighting or dark rooms...
even i have this issue, wanna know if all sgs3 panels are like this !!

Oh I see thanks for the clarification
My Galaxy S II had this issue really really badly, to the point where the keyboard and statusbar were lightly burned into the display. Keyboard was temporary but statusbar burn was permanent.
Galaxy Nexus had it a little better, only one very obvious black spot on one of the on screen navigation buttons (which were always black making it more noticeable)
Galaxy S III hardly has it at all! Was planning on taking it back to the carrier (first phone I've got on contract in 12 months) if I noticed the issue badly, but since it's so little (only a few tiny dots) then I'm going to keep this one
I remember a discussion about this on the Galaxy nexus forum. It's just a limitation of the amoled he technology that they can't make the blacks as deep anymore. Personally I think the higher resolution is worth the sacrifice.

look, the spot/ blotches issue is alright if its not too noticable....so thts fine....
but the blacks not being deep enuf, thts too bad considering s1 n s2 had nice deep blacks...
so basically the Supr amold " HD " screen exclusively has this inability to dispay true blacks ???
P.S: yeah the resolution is great, so much better thn the s2 !! love it !
I use this video to test the black on my note, play it in a totally black room, if you have true black you should not be able to see where the edge of the display and the bezel join.
My note`s black`s are pure black not gray.

HTC One camera purple tint possible fix

Just want to let every developer know, I have a possible way to fix the purple tint.
This is my findings...
When you set your saturation and explosure to -1, the purple tint just gone. But saturation -1 seems too much for the photo. It is ideal to have -0.5 or somthing.
It is nice that if a developer know how to modify the Camera setting and make it default.

Hey,
Tried it on mine and it didn't had that much of a dent.
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
It definitely has to do something with the saturation..
My resaults:
1. Saturation -2 others 0 - no purple tint but white tint on the sides.
2. Saturation -2 contrast +2 - no purple tint at all and even less white tint! Though i didn't try to snap a photo.
3. Saturation +2 - my screen is ****ing red!!
Or set ISO to 100 and it goes away too.
It's annoying. I had a phone replaced because it had really bad blue and sometimes purple tints in low light pics.
The replacement was fine. I then upgraded to 4.3 (ARHD) with the newest firmware (3.22) and the problem has returned. I still have a nandroid of 4.2.2 so may downgrade.

Funny, i still think this is hardware related, while many people report that at ISO 100 it disappears mine still shows it, even with this trick mine was still pink unless the saturation was at -2 which turns pictures black and white.
It's deft hardware related, not software.. The setting adjustments you talk about might 'lessen' the haze, bit it ruins the picture.. They are bad/wrongly positioned sensors within the phone itself. Unfortunately
*s¡gned
I think it's heat related. Seems that the red /purple gets worse when phone is running hot
Sent from my LG-D801 using Tapatalk 2
Mine is stone cold and it still happens. Since it didn't happen prior to the 4.2.2 update, it definitely isn't a hardware issue.
Firmware related?
Sent from my One using Tapatalk 4
I'm fairly sure it is a software issue. I heard somewhere that every camera sensor does this (I think it as in a anandtech podcast) and it is then taken care if in software to make it look good. If this is true then HTC did a pretty bad job of mapping the sensors characteristics.
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 4
i havent received the 4.3 OTA update, well im hoping this really aint hardware problem.. hoping too that theyll fix it.

Heat can cause magenta tint to image sensors - this happened also when my DSLR's sensor overheated a bit.
Anyways, I checked mine and seems normal, does not have any tinting - on 4.3 :?
Mine didn't have it at first either. But developed over time.

Yes. My camera was perfectly fine till I updated the firmware. Now it's stuck this way even going back and forth. I don't know if the driver for the camera gets broken or something... It sucks.
Just bought a HTC One Nordic today - it came with firmware 4.1.2 which is now updated to stock 4.2.2 - and I have had alot of purple tint on both firmwares especially on indoor shots - sigh
So much the camera is more or less useless.

That would be great or if anyone else can. On Note 2 Samsung apparently made up for natural lack of visibility on white background with stronger led light, it was not a problem. On Note 3 they forgot about that. I hope they remebered again on Note 4.

Can anyone compare the led on their black Note 4 to what has been said in here?
I believe this thread just proves how good this phone really is... No big issues, just small ones.
And to answer the OP question - I have a white Note 4 and I find it hard to see the LED in the sun. Not that I really care - a quick push of the button and I can see if I have any notifications.

Note 5 screen discoloration issue. May be widespread

I have had my Verizon 64 GB Note 5 for about 6 days now and since day 1 I have noticed that the screen color when on a white background is not uniform. My phone appears to have a section that has a red hue to it around the left side and more of a blueish hue to the right side of the screen. It is very noticeable on anything with a white background. I seem to notice it the most when I am reading text. I have gone back to the Verizon store I got the phone from and looked at their demo model and it seems to have the same issue. I also went to my local Best Buy and looked at 3 other Note 5's and all except one of Best Buy's seemed to have the issue.
Pull up a white background on your Note 5. Do you see this? I am going to take my phone back and swap it out this weekend, But with so many that I have seen with the issue I am not confident that the new one will be any better.
EDIT: Added poll
Got some pics of mine. NOTE!!!! Pictures do slightly exaggerate the issue

I wonder if a bad batch got shipped to my area? It's strange that 4/5 of the phones that I looked at had the issue. This is making me hopeful that I will get a good one when I go swap it out
Yes I have the same issue, imported phone from Singapore.
My 32gb Verizon model has this, except it's my right half of the screen that has the reddish hue. I'm planning on swapping it for a 64gb before my 14 days are up anyway, or else I'd have already returned it. It's incredibly annoying while reading text.
It's like the matrix effect. Once you've taken the blue pill you can't ignore it. I see tinting on every single amoled device I look at now.

Ha! I have been looking at all my co workers phones and I do see uneven back lighting on almost all of them but none have 2 distinctly different colors on each side of the screen like the Note 5 does. I could handle the uneven back lighting but the 2 colors on the Note 5 make me cringe every time I look at it for more than a few seconds. My co worker's iPhone 6 plus has a fairly uneven backlight from left to right but there are no specific colors illuminated more than others so it's easy to ignore at least for me.

You know what's weird. I owned a Note 4 on 3 of the 4 big carriers and the AT&T one was the only one that was bearable. It seems like its not as bad on the Korean models, which seem to be exclusive to AT&T.
This is what it looks like on mine
I have the 64gb White from AT&T and I cannot see this at all on mine. Colors look fairly cool throughout, not seeing any discoloration or even uneven backlighting.
no discolouration from what i can tell. though i do notice the colours (or WB) of the panel are different than my S6e panel which is warmer in all Display Modes (at full brightness).

POLL!! Samsung Galaxy Note 5 color

I've ordered the White one.. been using the black devices all my life.. Hope i won't regret my decision
What about you and why?
i've mostly only gone with black variants till the Sprint S6e which has a blue reflection. then for the N5, I picked up a white because I didn't like the other 3 colours as much, and the true black version just wasn't anywhere. but now I'm actually loving white. now that I think of it, i've always gone with mostly black cases anyway, so covering a white phone with a black case is a nice matching contrast. I mostly avoided white because it just always reminded me of earlier iPhones and iPods. with that being said, too bad the iPhone 6s Plus won't have a white version. so space grey it is. (and no, i'll still have my N5.. and S6e.. and 5s. haha)

second case I got for the N5 is clear, too. the black one I have (or tried), i'm just not liking. I don't think I like fully black cases anymore. but.. i'll be laying some hardwood floors on mine. loll

the black is awesome. 50 percent of the time it looks like blue so really youre getting 2 colors. lol
Wanted silver more than anything. Don't know why they'd limit the color options at launch based on country.

I agree. Pretty stupid if you ask me. I was kinda excited about the gold (since silver isn't available) when I thought that was an option. I don't understand why they would tease us with silver and not release it. My wife always gets white, so I got black again. I like the way it looks at different angles in the light. I don't like how slimy and smudged it gets. I'm getting a skin for the back because I hate cases and the front usually looks fine; the back is a different story. It basically never looks good because there is no way to keep it clean.

Tmobile white n5
Was only Gold and black available in NZ so I decided to go for the new gold colour and so far loving it

I would have loved a gold one. Shame they didn't offer all colors for all countries. I've done white devices since the Note 1, so it seemed only right I continue the trend. I really like the pearly look on this white.

Yeah most of the time it's blue for me too. Love it

Bought the white originally because it doesn't show fingerprints but changed to blue which I think just looks more special.

I agree; I really like the blue. I don't know why some talk about it looking blue like it's a bad thing. The only problem is the fingerprints on the back.

Rocking a gold one now. Loving it!
Agree with for the Silver

Yes totally agree, and what makes it worst is the silver is out, but only the 32gb. I am still waiting for the 64gb and waiting is such a pain.
Silver is available for the Note 5? Where?

I got white due to hearing the fingerprints show very clearly in the black Version
