I received a Samsung Galaxy Tab A for Christmas and bought a 128Gb microSD for extra storage. I've tried multiple times to expand the space, but it only allows me to add space, not expand. So I'm still running out of space on the primart dirve.
I've tried searching within this forum, but the search results keep giving me results for other devices and older android version solutions.
Format as Internal never comes up as an option when I installed the card. I redid the install a couple times but it wasn't an offered choice.
Can you point me to instructions for my device please?
Galaxy Tab A 10.1
Android 8.1
Kernel 3.18.14-14805584
I'm new to Android, so something easy to understand would be great.
Thanks so much

Is this about moving stuff to SD Card ?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.buak.Link2SD&hl=en
Samsung didn't remove it, the functionality has changed in Android itself AFAIK, and since they're building off of AOSP, the changes made between GB and ICS came along for the ride.
Maybe cm10 will work...ill try now for you. Btw im in Colorado too! Lol.

if apps2sd was enabled without any modifications to the way it works it would be pointless.
apps are always sent to the storage location registered as primary sdcard, which in the galaxy tabs is the internal storage.
and the galaxy tabs share a single partition for internal storage and user/app data.
this means even without apps2sd you already have what you'd get if you moved all apps to "sd", but without the randomly disappearing apps problem you sometimes get from the built in apps2sd.
Man you're whiney, look at this thread and change your sdcard mountpoints, essentially switching the internal with the external card as far as android's concerned

Wow you went total nazi question on that techie.
Try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1410262, working great on 7 inch galaxy tab 2, perfect for those data consuming games
Hello there everyone!
I have several phones (I get them through work for testing), and in most cases when I want the phones to do something "out of the ordinary" I root them.
The Samsung Galaxy series of phones in particular are used heavily. I rooted most recently the Note II, and then swapped the internal storage and the 64GB SD card, because the 16GB of storage capacity (for our guys) is never enough. We are always out in the field, and we use a LOT of network and technology/analysis apps, and the 16GB gets used up pretty quickly. This has proven to work just fine, but there has always been a definite performance hit after rooting (strange things like all text messages disappearing from the phone until you reboot it, stuff like that) - but it was livable in exchange for having almost 100 large apps on the phone for work.
Well, we have been using the S2, S3, S4, and Note/Note2 series in this manner, until recently, we just purchased some of the Galaxy Mega 6.3 phones, specially due to their large screen and being able to actually work easier on the screen with our analysis apps. However, as of right now there is still no mod available, and no root - so the internal storage is only 8GB, of which only slightly more than 4GB is available on first boot.
I would like to know the BEST way please (all ideas are welcome) to manage storage and apps on this device WITHOUT rooting... They all have the ultra high speed 64GB SanDisk SD cards in them...
One thought was to install the apps, and when the phone is almost full, run a backup of all the apps via apk to the SD card, and then uninstall the apps until needed. When needed, on the fly just restore the one app you need from the backup, and use it. But this might be tedious as well.
Using the Android apk and program tools from a PC, I know the old trick of telling the device to set the default storage location to 2, but this has proven problematic with the Note II, and S4....
And, as well all know, the app2sd apps do not work with Galaxy phones...sheesh...
SO - can you wonderful folks please give me some good ideas on managing the apps and memory/storage of this device? Use the backup to apk method, or? What do you guys think?
I am asking, because I truly value your opinions and knowledge, and also because I have several guys at the office counting on me to come up with something that will be workable.
Other than this "problem" so far, the Mega has proven to be great out in the field! The S4 is still one of the favorites though...
Thank you all very much - I really appreciate it!
Mike
Hi folks,
I'm new to the forum, new to galaxy s4 and new to android. Been with apple for the last 5 years and made the leap to android (a few weeks back) after ditching £$£ worth of apple apps!
But I was having no regrets as being fairly technical/geeky I enjoy the fact you can do SO MUCH with android! However things are beginning to annoy me very much with my new toy.
Hoping you can shed some light on any of my issues please.
PHONE SPECS:
-------------------------
SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 I9505 T-MOBILE UK
ANDROID 4.2.2 ROOTED USING ODIN
I9505XXUBMG7
NO CUSTOM ROM'S (Don't think I have an option there at the moment for my version?)
64GB SDCARD (unbranded)
PROBLEMS
------------------
1) All of a sudden (twice now) my phone has corrupted my SD card, by deleting all my photos!! music and apps!!! The first time it happened it gave me the "can't mount SD" message so had to reformat. This time just deleted random stuff. Tried windows chkdsk to no avail.
2) Can no longer connect to any pc. Just nothing appearing in device manager/keis etc - tried rebooting, usb debug mode, restart phone in download mode...nothing.
Apps I have running that I THINK could be the culprits and not the phone OS would be - APP manager Pro, Clean master, No bloat, App quarantine, folder mount, lucky patcher, nova launcher. I guess that's a lot of variables to add in to the mix, but IMHO you need some of these just to be able to use your SD card for storing APP's when games are nearly 2GB each, Samsung's 8GB, or so of usable phone space is a joke to say the least and having to hack/crack the phone just to have the ability to store on SD is ridiculous!
So not a happy bunny and I hate to say it but what's the point in all this customisation if the bloody thing isn't stable..especially to the most important/core parts to the phone? Someone please restore my dwindling confidence with android!! :crying:
Hope you can help!
Thanks,
Michael

You're running a lot of crappy apps I'd get rid of. Clean master, no bloat, app quarantine, lucky patcher which is warezware, etc. You should post this in the i9505 forum and they can help you with getting rid of the crap you have on your phone and how to remove bloat in a more device friendly way.
Could a mod move this to the correct forum. Thanks
I ran out of storage for new apps a long time ago. My device is kind of useless for new things because there is no internal memory for INSTALLING APPS, even after removing 75% of my apps which includes system apps. There is just no more space. It still has 2gb of internal memory left BUT THAT CANNOT BE USED FOR INSTALLING APPS, stupidly. There are 8GB of total internal storage space.
I have plenty of storage for data. Just not for apps. I have a 32GB SD card as well.
App2SD apps, I maximized all possible data to be moved.
Apps with data larger than 20MB I just deleted the whole apps.
Still no more space.
Additionally, it means I CANNOT use this tablet for things like games, or for storing map data from gopilot live as a backup in case my phone dies. Which is VERY limiting. Especially because I used to like to play games on it but I had to remove all the games to make way for utilities.
Thus I DESPERATELY NEED to be able to install UNLIMITED NUMBER OF APPS using the SD card for internal storage.
I tried the vold.fstab method HERE, but it did not work.
PLEASE HELP!!! THANK YOU!!!
p.s. I WOULD BUY A NEW TABLET WITH MORE MEMORY BUT NO 7.0 INCH TABLET EXISTS THAT IS BETTER THAN THE TAB 4 BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL MAKING HUGE 8.0 and 8.4 INCH TABLETS THAT ARE TOO BIG SO I AM STUCK WITH THE TAB 4.

i'd say you just need test different apps all over and over akd different methods from XDA, i have on my phone sdcard as internal memory but same method wont work on tab 4..... you should use folder mount to move appdata to sdcard and use it from there, it helps if you have big app data on internal sd card.

No I tried that already. It does Not work because of the error "this has been limited due to kitkat so you're not authorized" or something to that extent. It's not an error, it is a limitation of the kitkat (and all subsequent) operating systems. Google did that on purpose to try to force people to have to upgrade their phone.

well, you could install cyanogenmod to fix issue.....

Cyanogenmod isn't an extreme solution, it runs better than touchwiz IMO and it takes up significantly less memory, which is a fact. It's more like saying, "I don't like Windows," and the reply being, "You should try out Ubuntu," especially since both cyanogenmod, like Ubuntu, is completely free

With a quote like that you are on the wrong website my friend. Sorry for trying to help. And it is a valid solution since it would've solved the problem

Waiting for a real solution to the actual problem.
uh if youre not ready to install different rom i guess theres no solution
I'm having the exact same dilemma. In my case, not going to CM (or another rom/firmware/kernel..) is due to the fact that my children use the tablets, so the KidsMode needs to work. I've looked at that one from Zoodles, and its rubbish compared to the Samsung one available on their Galaxy devices. My original post never had any reply other than my own update.
By the way: I'm still searching for a solution to this... If only Samsung would/could release Marshmallow on this tablet, the Adoptable Storage option could be used...
Now, if you can just hold your breath...
lol I know right...?
Full disclosure: I've given up hope of finding a solution that will work with (essentially) stock 4.4.2, so now I'm looking into how to get the TouchWiz framework to run on a rom/kernel that DOES support support an external/internal swap.
Of course, that does nothing to help the OP, but IMO the best solution has already been presented to him: Install a custom ROM that supports what he needs. It's still the best solution since there don't seem to be any TouchWiz-dependent apps he needs.
Years later still no solution

If you are willing to root your device you can use Apps2sd to actually move(link) whole app into sd card.
You'll need to repartition your sd card to do it, but there are good guides to do it.
EDIT:
Oh it's renamed app2sd but here is the link https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=in.co.pricealert.apps2sd&hl=fi for it
you can also try link2sd app

That's very limited and actually doesn't do anything more than the native android system does already, ever since about 2013 or so

I don't know about how limited it is, but it's completly different than native android moving apps to sd. Linking is like actually increasing your devices internal memory(not really but somethign like that). Also it's easiest/(propably)best way to get more memory for apps.
My Samsung Galaxy S5 (android 6) and LG V35 (android 9) both use the same 64GB SD cards. I only just recently noticed that all the apps I moved to the SD card, never actually moved. They say they are using external storage but are not. My S5 was being extremely laggy and so I tinkered around with it and noticed the issue. So it made me check my V35 as well...both have the same issue.
From research I've read the following:
* Google never wanted SD cards used for external storage
* Google has removed this feature from nearly all new phones
* Google started removing this feature as early as kitkat 4.4
* Any app that has the option "move to sd card" is most likely only moving the apps data and not the app itself.
Both of my phones give me the option but not a single bit of data actually moves to the SD card. The developers must have left the option in for the users who are still using ancient devices that were not forcefully made obsolete by Google. I'm assuming the feature will work if I root both of my devices and use a 3rd party app to move them? I'd really like to save my Galaxy S5. I mainly use it as a camera, book reader, and a streaming device when I'm on trips (it acts as a backup or I give it to my mom to use, she doesn't own a phone).
Does lineageOS work well on the Galaxy S5? No major issues? Maybe it has tweaked the gpu/cpu so the device isn't quite as sluggish using modern apps? Any other ROM you guys suggest for it?
I haven't dicked around with android since kitkat on the gtablet. Any really good guides out there with specific step-by-step instructions for an old man? Cause I'm gonna need it at this point. Thanks!!
