[Q] What's the best way to backup the data partition?

Since the unlock process can wipe the data partition, I need to back it up.
What's the best way to do this? Should I just use Root Explorer to copy the entire /data directory to the external sdcard? Or is there a better way?
Will the appropriate ownership and permissions be preserved?
And do I need to backup just "/data/data" or do I really need to backup the entire "/data"?
I believe that Clockwork Recovery Mod is designed to do some kind of full image backup including /data...

Doesn't help me since the idea is to backup /data before unlocking.

Once you are unlocked there is no going back. What is the point of backing up /data before hand? Unlocking will not erase any data on the phone.
The guide referenced by the main Pudding thread (http://briefmobile.com/how-to-unlock-the-atrix-4g-bootloader) says that the data partition will be wiped.
Is that incorrect?

Try to root your phone first, then use titanium backup to backup all your apps data
Enviado desde mi MB860 usando Tapatalk
I was under the impression from the guide that the entire data partition would be wiped, not just apps data.
well /data simply holds your homescreens and your app data does it not?
You can't preserve your homescreens cross-roms, but you can use tibu to backup and restore app data.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe thats how it works.
Cheers

If those dates sectors have been overwritten then no. It all comes down to which sectors have been overwritten
So basically what u r saying is if i wipe data to install twrp i still can recover the data..

Possible. The data was deleted wasn't actually deleted. But only marked for deletion. So as you as new data it will follow a write scheme normally way it works on android is say a disk it will work from front to back and then start back at the beginning. To minimize write cycles so to prolong ssd type memory the deleted data isn't deleted until the next write cycles come around to those disk sectors. Which user data is in a different location. But every day that goes by you risk losing more and more

Can you relock bootloader without wiping?

Like the subject says. is there a way to relock the bootloader without wiping?
Device is not rooted and running the Beta 17 rom
Thanks!
No.
There isn't a way to relock it without losing data.
HOWEVER:
OnePlus makes it very easy to create full backups of your phone with almost everything (except settings), including apps (not app data).
Using the OnePlus Switch app, create a backup of your phone. Plug your phone into a computer and transfer the "opbackup" folder out of the base internal storage folder.
Store this folder in a safe space.
After locking the bootloader by any means, turn on your phone and do the initial setup. Then, transfer the "opbackup" folder back to the internal storage and open OnePlus Switch again. Restore the backup.

After trying to move a couple of folders from phone to PC, the folders moved, not the files... but they where deleted from phone anyway...
So now I´m trying to run recovering programs... they demand root. Is there any way to root without having to wipe data?
