Hi i like this website
i have a question for the CPU on htc shift
is possible to change my intel GMA 950 CPU to the new Intel Aton??
the intel atom is very good for the shift. this can make the battery life for 2 hour to 4 hour.
800mhz to 1.6 ghz
thx
Hi, I like the question
Actually it made me laught so much I'm going to answer.
No, you cannot change the graphic chip for a new processor. You would have no screen displaying nice lines and windows.
If you mean changing the processor by an Atom, this is not possible at all.
About getting twice the battery time, I think atom CPU don't get this anyway, so you should better look for an extended battery.
Becareful what we wish for

Bro, Intel GMA is NOT totally a Graphic Card, it is North Bridge Chipset that Control CPU, Video (PCIe or AGP), and RAM, but in this case most of Value Chipset Intel has an onboard Graphic Card
Some Notebook Value are having Graphic Card embedded in the NorthBridge Chipset, but performance Notebook do not have that, most of it are used NVidia or ATI as their VGA Card separated from NorthBridge Chipsets to gain more speed on Vector/Poygon/OpenGL/DirectX/etc
To learn more about intel 945GM, follow this link
http://www.intel.com/products/notebook/chipsets/945gm/945gm-overview.htm
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=114012&stc=1&d=1221760371
Processor Upgrade are depend to NorthBridge Chipset Compatibility
North Brodge Chipset of our SHIFT are very compatible to new processor, but perhaps the BIOS should have to be rewrite OR NOT, to understand the multiply factor and front side bus of the new CPU
this is Sony UX 280 being upgrade to Core2Duo
http://micropctalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4641
they said that the battery life got no change at all
but the process for upgrading the CPU is as complicated as HTC universal doing the RAM upgrade, except if the slot for the CPU is using ZIF (zero insertion force) like the one that we have in our desktop motherboard
hope somebody is DARE enough to do like those guys in MicroPCTalk
In my opinion, Chipset of SHIFT do have good compatibility because it was 945series, by theory it can achieve compatibility to CoreDuo, but depend on CPU formfactor
Speed for the Processor does not imply the battery life significantly, cause most of the mobile CPU is ULV (ultra low voltage), and have the Intel Speedstep technology, that can drop down the multiplier if not being used extensively
Atom 330
ok, the initial question was not very accurate, but let's try to stick back to the topic...
Does anybody knows if there is a chance to replace stock Shift CPU with new dual core Intel Atom 330?
http://www.crunchgear.com/2008/09/20/dual-core-atom-chips-now-shipping-from-intel/
processors fit on sockets
BGA stands for the Ball Grid Array, cause this kind processor use soldered balls instead of pins to have a contact with the motherboard.
As i know the BGA CPU used on our shift is the Intel A110 Stealey 800Mhz with 663 BGA.
I'm searching for quite a while now, and i don't see something that fits 663...
http://www.intel.com/Assets/PDF/datasheet/309219.pdf

Type a110, and you will get the answer you want...
945GU Express chipset, was designed for a100 and a110 processors.
You have to dig deeper on this, i guess.

Almost certainly not I'm afraid. The chipset and bios likely don't support the Atom and probably never will.
In addition, it I don't think you'd see that much of an improvement in battery life even if it were possible. Look at the MSI Wind - it barely makes 2 hours on 3 cell battery.

Dave

Dave, am I right to say that our Shift got Atom A110 inside? So BIOS will probably get it, the only issue is to find something that would fit motherboard with 663 BGA.

No - the A110 Stealey processor is *not* an Atom

They are based on quite different architectures which leads me to believe they would not be drop in compatible in the Shift.

Talking about Atom install in the shift, is talking about fitting a 45nm processor, into a 90nm socket... it just wont fit...
Different structure. Different Philosophy.
The Stealy's are not even mentioned on intels web page...
They are called A100 and A110 and there was no more evolution on the 663 BGA.
The Atom processor has μFC-BGA 479 or 478 socket...
Smaller chip... newer technology.
{The good thing if you install an atom on your shift is that you will have a lot of spare balls
(and do not try to turn it on ... if you wana keep the rest of your remaining balls ... lol )
}
regards.
Why it has to be an Atom
Why ???
we have so much more option open here, IF you are dare enough to change the CPU
because this Intel 800MHz are very poor quality, perhaps we can look over to CoreDuo

THERE IS NO OTHER PROCESSOR MADE IN 90nm TECHNOLOGY WITH 663 BGA (pins)
NOTHING ELSE FITS THE SHIFT ! ! !
The first thing to look when you want top change the processor is to see if it fits in ...
The intel A110 (Stealy) 800Mhz and A100 600Mhz are the ONLY ONES that fit in...
It's not the end of the world though ... there are still options... if you want more batery life ... go to 600Mhz.
Square peg, round hole comes to mind!
The guys here are good! But not THAT good...
It may be possible with a dedicated achitechture interface daughterboard but the speed loss using this method would negate any gains!
Anyone?
Sadly said that you are right

Good research bro, cause i have ux280p, and i thought that good story may came up to our shift, after doing the research, it is only 100 n 110 that support our shift because of the cpu formfactor, and now Intel is leaving us ... hiks, so i think that the only possible way to improve performance is only upgrading the ram,
Maybe one day there will be another 100series come to life, but i doubt it
To use a daughterboard, maybe possible, but then we have to build another zif slot, hmmm dangerous .... hiks
...
if you can create room in the shift for that i''ll give you my car...
there is absolutelly no room in the device for such things...
it's not a desktop pc with an enormous tower...

I was thinking on the lines of a pull-along kiddy-cart to carry the excess equipment in (THAT'S how serious I was thinking about it).
For the size, what it achieves and present tech vs cost, I am quite happy with what I have.
Hey developers,
Today i'm thinking if Samsung can
change the Adreno 200 of the SGM
S5570. Who beliefs in that ?
Hope Samsung will rebuild a new sgm
with a newer and smoother graphic card.
Greetings,Steexyl
There is no swappable graphics "card" in a phone.
Impossible.
On all smartphones I am aware of (all ARM Android ones for sure), the GPU is part of the same chip as the CPU.
The ONLY way you might be able to do an upgrade is if you are able to find a pin-compatible CPU upgrade.
e.g. Exynos 4210 ->4412 is theoretically possible, but completely impractical since it requires soldering a whole new BGA AND obtaining a bare 4412 somehow.
Utopia
I think it's impossible, but you can buy a better phone with larger screen for less than 200€
Is imposibile i think !
As everyone said, impossible.
Practically impossible . It would simply be better to buy a new phone .

bump
You don't need to bump something on this forum. If no one has responded wait a few weeks and give it another shot. There might be a better forum to post this question to. This device is new and wont be shipping for a few more weeks. Also CES is this week and might show off a better option for you. The listing you linked doesn't even mention if a OS will be available at launch. Based on what I read on the ARMBRIX website. They have an early "port" of 4.1 running on it. Not sure why they are calling it a port. Based on what they said on the link below. They had to boot from the MicroSD slot. This might change as the hardware gets closer to it's shipping date. If you are planning to use the SATA port... you will need some kind of external power.
ARMBRIX Website
You might get more of a debate on /r/Android.
Well, ARMBRIX hasn't changed any of the hardware specs..till now
And it also has an eMMC slot (checkout the other side of the board!; confirmed by a fellow CES 2013 visitor).
looking forward to a great Quad/A15 year!

Nice one, but Armbrix seems to have better CPU (Dual-core ARM Cortex-A15) and the newer Mali T604 GPU.

I wish this device had a better GPU. More likely a custom Mali T880 MP8 or MP12. This phone is what Huawei calls their flagship phone. Only GPU has let it down. Mali T880 MP4 can't just handle everything so smoothly in full HD.
they are slowly getting better
What we need is proper kernel sources so there can be a custom kernel built with GPU improvements, governors and overclock. I just wont count on that any time soon for this phone..

Overclocking just doesn't help much. All the GPU power is needed for gaming. Overclocking causes heating which throttles down CPU freqs. And over clocking really doesn't help much other than first 10-15 minutes.
My suggestion was just that they should have added more GPU clusters. This GPU is found in low budget devices.

Sorry, but for real gaming get a PC and even there U could use a Emulator for Android games
i actually disagree with this. this mali quad cluster is on par, if not better than adreno 510 found in what is pretty much considered the best bang for the buck cpu out there, snap 650/2. not only is 650 a upper midrange/flasghsip material SoC, it performs generally quite well and runs everything. kirin beats it's gpu, or at least matches it, and wipes the floor with it when it comes to cpu power. sure, gpu is not 530 or mali mp12, but then again we paid a midrange price and got a flagship phone. it's a compromise. despite that, it still runs everything ok so its an acceptable gpu. not rly sure you'd see a huge difference between this gpu and mp12 on s7 since one on s7 has to push double the pixels, so real difference should be 50ish% tops. most gpu benches run the screen @ 1080P and sure, in that case it beats our cluster, but that's not s7's native resolution is it.
in the end, imo its worth it since the entire package simply performs great. i've had my share of phones, and this lil monster simply kills it, even without a custom rom. its just that well optimized.

This is not a flagship GPU. Chinese phone generally offer more at this price. LeEco Le2 has this same GPU and costs ~⅓ of this phone's price. Xiaomi MI5 has an adreno 530 and it costs lesser than this phone. I would say a custom MP8 MALI GPU could have taken this phone to a different class. And yeah benchmark scores doesn't make any sense to me. They have just show some score based on 2 mins of testing. We can't conclude real life use with benchmark scores
xiaomi / letv phones might offer better specs for price, in china or india. there are some major issues when buying those, especially for ppl in europe/US. chinese brands are hard to come by, and even if you buy them for cheap/order from china you're pretty much stuck with a phone and no warranty. shipping to china is usually not worth considering the price. if you actually find a retailer that will sell lets say mi5 and provide a 2yr warranty, phone tends to cost a lot more than honor, at least thats the case where I'm at (EU). not to mention you can get honor8 for cheap when signing a contract. good luck doing that with chinese brands.
this is not a rant about chinese brands (myb rant bout xiaomi cause their open source policy is crap), i still use my rn3p and its been mostly satisfying esp. with CM13. however its been less then a year and it already started behaving badly. quality & control simply isnt on par. it was cheap sure, but it dies fast too, and there is no way for me to repair it. it is what it is, a compromise. cheap and you risk it, lil more expensive, but at least you're safe.
oh and in regards to mi5, unless you buy that premium version, phone is actually quite disappointing. build quality is meh, performance might be decent, but miui8 performs worse than EMUI so day to day usage is kinda pain. wish they did smth with that crapware os they ship. debloating is first step
I agree to what you say, but I won't include Mali T880 MP4 to a flagship hardware.
well you could say it's not flagship compared to the likes of snap820/1 / exynos, but it's the best huawei has to offer. for 1080p its acceptable. people that dont game really wont be able to tell a difference, for rest it just works. if you really look at kirin SoC's, even the gpu in 960 isnt top of the line. sure it kinda manages to narrow the gap with mentioned SoC's, but new ones are around the corner and kirin will again be worse in gpu department. this is standard for huawei honestly. same goes for mtk tho, yet mtk is widely popular (sure cheap price is the main reason) despite pretty crappy gpu. goes to show most ppl dont really need that top of the line gpu on board.
if hauwei was smart, they could've simply avoided this issue by releasing complete source. well built custom rom would be smth that most enthusiast would prefer over maxed out gpu. guess this wont happen tho xD

Well Kirin 960 has a very good GPU. Far better than this one. But again it has only 8 clusters which is good as of now. The new smartphones which will be using Mali G71 will have 16 clusters I guess. Cause that GPU can be configured upto 32 clusters. And Mali G71 MP8 isn't bad at all. It's really powerful and it can keep most demanding games run smoothly more than a year or two. But Mali T880 MP4 can't, only vulkan can help a bit. And I heard vulkan is kinda outdated/broken here in Nougat update. That's a bad news.

Okay. Whatever the brand is this is what they call their flagship phone. But it lacks some GPU power. I'm experiencing a very bad GPU performance on this phone. I've to enable ROG mode if I'm to play mc5 smoothly. And powering a HD display even my three year old tablet with Adreno 320 does a better job.
well, kirin 955 = 950 when it comes to gpu performance, so gpu debate stands for now ex flagship p9 which has pretty much same specs as honor8.
as far as performance goes 320 is deffo worse than mali880. in 99% cases adreno 510 is better than 320, so 880mp4 should be too. im guessing either bad optimizations from huawei or devs are the culprit.

You can get a nividia shield cloned app and you can even Play gta5 on your Phone dont know whats your Problem. if you have LTE you can Stream every game to your Phone. By the way the real feeling of gaming is only on the PC
Sorry for being redundant, but this is not Huawei's flagship phone, it's a budget phone. If you want their flagship get the Mate 9. Or maybe the upcoming Honor V9. The 'Honor' brand to me is a (budget) offshoot similar to Oppo to OnePlus. It makes sense for them to use a word in their brand name that western people are actually able to pronounce.
If would help if EMUI5 has the 720p mode working, but currently it doesn't. I'm afraid to use Android ADB command to force it, because it most likely won't look correctly and sometimes soft brick phones that isn't running stock Android, which is a pain to setup the phone from scratch.

Hi guys. I have a snapdragon 600 CPU. I am just wondering if it works if I replace the 430 in TA-1000 with this CPU? Would the hardware supports? I mean, you know for example we can't just replace an Intel Q6600 with an i5 because motherboard won't support it. Is it the same situation on smart phones? I never worked on smart phones. So please if someone could share any experience? Thanks guys!

you are talking about changing "heart".. on humans it is working in some instances (luckily where no s/w needed :laugh.. but machines need s/w to cope with h/w.. so, until unless you are able to let machine know that you changed his heart (cpu), it won't work..
This is the dumbest question I have ever seen in my entire life.
1) What do you mean you have a snapdragon 600 cpu? Thats not possible. Do you work at Qualcomm and you somehow managed to smuggle a single chip back home from their factories? Did you rip a motherboard from an old phone?
2) The chip is soldered onto the motherboard. Good luck desoldering it without destroying the board.
3) I doubt that the pin layout of the 430 is the same as 600.
4) Its highly unlikely that the other chips like gpu, fingerprint sensor are compatible with your snapdragon 600. Even if they are its going to require a lot of coding to get them to work.
5) The 430 is much better than the 600.
If you really want a nokia 6 with a snapdragon 600 then just buy a nokia 6, completely gut it until nothing is left except the shell, buy a complete motherboard with snapdragon 600 and all the other components and place your motherboard with the other components in your empty nokia. You might have to use a saw, tape and glue to get everything neatly in your nokia.
What you are proposing will end in failure.
