Google Sounds App? - Essential Phone Questions & Answers

Has anyone tried the new Google Sounds app on the PH-1? Is there a modded version of it yet to use on our Ph-1 phones?

Yep I have it installed and it works fine. You do have to manually give it storage permissions and then it pops up as an option in sounds.

I'm running it as well.. I looks better than the old settings but I thought there would be better choices of ringtones.

That will likely expand with time similar to the wallpaper app.

Go-to Settings/Apps and Notifications and find the Sounds app. Give it Storage permission and it should not crash.

[Q] It seems my Samsung tablet was hit by some kind of malware, how to check?

The symptom is, each time I switch on my tablet, I receive a notification in lower right corner promoting something like lucky draw, game, etc. If I click on the notification, it automatically starts downloading apk. The apk is always named like yyyymmddxxxxxxxxxxx.apk. I never run those apks, I guess they are not friendly. How can I check which app I installed is doing this?

First check what you have installed recently. Could be one of those apps give spam notifications. I saw something similar on my bro-in-law phone and that was because he installed some kind of "enhancement" program to make his phone run more efficient (it didn't help bytheway).
Also, since you didn't say what OS you're running, 4.0+ has the option to disable notifications when you go to settings>applications>app name. If you find its an app you need, then that might help.
If you thinks its beyond this, then install lookout or norton from the market.
It's not malware, they're called push notification ads. Just download "Ad Blocker" (root required) from the market and it will tell you which app(s) is doing this. You can also choose to delete it from within the app.
Pretty handy.

Can you upload a screenshot of this notification ad for us? Maybe even a list of your downloaded apps?

I don't have it now, I will load it when I get it next time.
However I have the list of apps I installed because I sent it to the author of push detector. How can I send it to you? I just don't want to post it here.
I have another finding, which seems odd to me: I set the home page of chrome to be blank, and I double checked that, but each time I open the browser it always opens a search page with a lot of informations (looks like a portal but I don't like it). How can I know which app replaces my home page with such rubish?
Is it possible the 3G provider does this kind of things? (notification ads and home replacement)?

No, your network provider would have nothing to do with push notification ads or homepage replacement. And as for setting your homepage in Google chrome, are you talking about the desktop version? Because I don't believe you can make that selection on the mobile version, unless I'm missing something?
BTW, you can send that list to me in a PM if you'd like.

Try this app, it will tell you every app that has a shady ad network and you can delete it. A friend of mine had an app that was creating a ton of shortcuts all over her home screens.

In Chrome settings you can set your home page. But it seems it's the 3G provider that replaces the home page for me.
I will send you the app list. Thanks.

[?]Disable Incremental Ringtone?

Does anyone know how to disable the increasing ringtone WITHOUT using xposed?
Thanks!
My phone doesn't have an option for incremental ringtone? The ringtone is always at a set level. I do however see an option for when it's in my pocket to get louder?
Are you sure it's not just the way the ringtone was recorded?

I'm having the same issue. I can confirm that it's not because of the ringtone I'm using. Fella from work has the note 3 and it did the same thing. Would love to figure out how to disable this

No it's not the ringtone. I made it myself. The first second is quiet then it goes to regular volume. I don't want to use Wanam because you can't play Square Enix games with Xposed installed. My current work around is an app on the play store called "Disable Increasing Ring" and then I go to App Manager and uncheck Show Notifications. This works fine. I just hate using an app for something that should have a toggle by default.
Thanks Guys!

Make app into system app

Is there any way to make an app like "Where's My Droid" a system app? I like the app, but if I do lose it, anybody that finds it can see the app and uninstall it. If it were a system app, the icon wouldn't be on the screen or in the app drawer.

[Must be rooted] You could manually move the apk from data / app to system / app using Root Explorer (or similar).
Thanks. I am rooted. I'll get root explorer and move it. Will it have to be installed again or is it a done deal?

Just move the apk and reboot.
I'm on it. Thanks again
For some reason I couldn't find it, but looking in Titanium Backup/Special Features, I found you can choose make system app. All's well now, but I'd still like to remove it from the app drawer, but still be able to access it. Is that possible?

You'll need to decompile and modify it -- which is not easy to do. Or you can use one of those "hide app" apps in the market.

Having problems setting up notification sounds in hangouts, gmail.

For some reason I cannot change notification sounds in each of these apps. It just falls back to the system notifications sounds. Do I need to change app permissions to allow for this change?
OK, gmail seems to work. Now just hangouts not working.

Yes, allow permissions to storage for the apps to be able to read the ringtones you have selected-had the same issues after upgrading to Marshmallow on my Nexus 6.
Thanks for that little tip. I'm a wee bit ashamed I didn't think of it myself because I've screwed up a few things with xprivacy but for some reason it never occurred to me that the stock rom could be having troubles with access permissions.

Ok Google Voice crashing system?

Hi
Anyone else having trouble with Google Voice Search crashing the system and causing it to reboot?
I find after an hour or so, Voice Search stops working as it has turned/toggled off in Google settings.
When I toggle it back on, it causes the system to crash and the phone reboots.
Working fine for me. Did you try cache and data clear?
Yep, sure did.
I've gone back to using the built in Launcher and now it works fine.

I was using Nova at first, then Evie launcher, but both gave the same issue.
I think I may have pinned it down to me using the whitelist app to make Google full screen?

hmmm, this is definitely a weird one. Are you using the smart lock voice feature by chance? I know some folks were having issues with Smart Lock. Just wondering if this is somehow related

No not using smart lock.
It is strange? It's been fine all day today using Launcher3.
Ive tried running the phone in safe mode and all is fine, but using a third party launcher seems to break Voice Search within an hour or so after rebooting.
I can live with the inbuilt launcher for now. Maybe on the next firmware update it will fix the issue?
