Bad selfie quality on newer phones? - Asus ZenFone Max Pro M1 Questions & Answers

Hello Folks,
Longtime lurker here. But issue with my recent Asus phone has been bothering me for a while now. The issue I'm about to raise has been raised by me on Twitter of Asus India and on Email support without any solution offered.
I have two Max Pro M1. I was very happy with my old purchase so I decided buy another one in October end.
Everything was fine except selfie camera. Selfie camera on older device was actually pretty good which made me wonder why people were complaining about selfie camera. But when my new phone arrived I discovered why that was the case.
Selfie camera on newer device is actually quite bad. Even I was in disbelief as both cameras were having the same camera.
I noticed that sharpness and clarity of selfie camera on my new phone isn't as good as older phone. And I'd like to know why is that the case here.
I took images from both my phone from the same angle and the same lighting. I observed that image size is larger on my old zenfone Max Pro M1 and smaller on newer Zenfone Max Pro M1.
I am putting screnshots of gallery in which you can clearly see picture size is actually smaller in newer phone and larger on old phone.
What do you guys think? What could be the issue here? Are we getting phones with different specifications than advertised?
I have tried everything to ensure nothing is affecting my stock camera quality. Even put the phone on safe mode but results are still the same.

Update the phone to the latest software version and then try. Software improvements had affected the camera lot.

Need to check camera sensors on both of your phones. Use the app "Device info HW" and post the results here.

1. Yes, check sensor information on both devices and see if they are same.
2. Make sure both phones have exactly same camera settings.
3. Clean the camera lens of the new phone. Make sure Tempered Glass or anything is not covering any part of the lens.

This is really odd then. Did you try clearing the camera appdata of both phones and then reshoot?

Tried Everything
Camera info is same as as advertised. Everything matches.
There's definitely something odd here. The screenshots I attached were taken on the date of delivery of my new phone. When I opened selfie camera, I could instantly see it was really bad compared to my old phone and that's when I decided to compare.

Are they the same varient? Or your comparing 6gb ram varient to 4/3gb one. As the I have the 6gb varient and the front camera is 16mp and file size is around 3.2mb per picture, but if i turn the capture quality to 8mp the file size goes down to 2.3mb

Yes. Both phones are different versions.
Old phone (the one with better camera) is 3GB Ram version.
New Phone is 4GB version.

5mp camera taking better pics than s2

Hi
I got my s2 few days back and it's upgraded to 4.0.3.. I'm happy with the performance but very very sad bcz of camera.. My old nexus is taking back better pictures than this s2.. Here are two same pictures taken in same time and same place..

Please suggest me whether it's ICS problem or camera problem? Should I downgrade it to gb or go for camera replacement?
It's Indian version I9100
Thank you
Megapixels != camera quality.
If you want to take decent photos, buy a good camera.
P.S. Taking landscape photos at night without a tripod = blurry.
here is the photo taken with sgs2

So my camera doesn't have any problems right? Cause in nexus photo asyou can see texts look good and clear in those boards even after zooming but in s2 photo it doesn't and s2 photo is so dull compared to nexus.. And I took few photos in night party where we used to hangout.. Picture which was taken in nexus was better than s2.. Like faces were looking clear without so much noise and blurry.. So I thought there might be some problems and posted here
On both photos it looks like you're trying to take a landscape night photo with the flash on (lolwut?). I really think you need to learn how to use a camera, specifically the operating range and capability of a flash and what ISO and shutter speed are.
I love seeing people out at night getting out there pocket camera (or even worse, phone), pointing it at a scene 200 metres away and expecting their flash to automagically make an awesome photo.
Thank you.. I'll learn how to use camera.. I don't have enough experience dealing with cameras.. I just used to do as you said... I'll try my best to learn about it.. So there is no problem about camera right?
And it was took around 6...

the difference you see is purely settings-derived

If you look at the store under the "uninor" banner, SGS2 pic is clear while the nexus overexposes it. So it's the exposure setting that's different between the two photos that makes you think the SGS2 is taking darker photos.
Turn on night scene on the S2, problem solved.
I hate all this current selling lark that more == better. So many ppl simply look at a number and think "wow that's high it obviously better".
I've played with a 8mp camera phone and it got totally pissed on my a 3mp nikam proper slr. Always remember you are not going to take the best pictures on a cameras whoes Lens is smaller than a screw head.
As someone already said, megapixels are not a measure of the picture quality. Don't get confused with it. Pictures you have taken are generally bad because of the environment. If you want to take city pics at night then it is not a great idea to use phone for that purpose. Galaxy SII has wonderful camera that can beat almost every other phone's camera on the market. Here is the proof Best photo you've taken on the GS2

But in galaxy picture the motorcycles are much more in focus. You can't really compare them, it depends on what you wanted and how you set the camera. I am no photographer but I once had a camera where you could manually set aperture and shutter time (apart from the focus) and both shots could have come from the same camera with different aperture/shutter settings
You can try to use some camera hacks, some custom roms have it.
I think something's wrong with the sgs2 camera hardware... A long time ago, when I still had my sony ericsson k800, I remember it taking much better pics, even though it only had a 2mp cam...

Well, if you can not solve your problem with flashing Stock Roms or Custom Roms maybe something is wrong with your hardware as you say.

id strongly suggest you have a faulty gs2 if thats the case.
darker photos means less noise , brighter photos means higher noise value thus this will result in lowering the quality of the picture. but i think i have to agree with you on this. GB camera setting is abit better then ics . well for me anyways because i tend to take pictures with my phone (before i got a DSLR that is). now when i try to take the same picture with ICS its doesn't looks as good as the GB camera days.
I think its maybe the camera firmware.

Best AOSP (CM12) camera's currently out there

Hi Guys,
Thought you should know;
I've tried a couple of camera's in the last few days and i've come up with a top 5;
1. HTC M9 Camera (Full HD ois video, Laser focus, a lot of extra's, very fast, 13mp -> good quality in low light)
2. Lenovo Camera (Lot's of options too, somehow i didn't like the blurry preview, and the overall orange-ish results)
3. Motorola Camera (More options then CM camera, while maintaining the same (good) quality. Big downside for me was the "zoomed in" pictures, and a little less low light performance)
4. Camera FV-5 (Don't need explanation, lots of options, AOSP camera quality)
5. CM Camera (If you're satisfied with AOSP camera quality and don't need all the extra's, the built in CM camera is your guy)
I'm not putting in any links.
Just Google for the camera's above. And let me know your findings.

Does the HTC M9 Camera gives good results? (Compared stock lollipop performance).
The camera is actually the only thing keeping me away from AOSP (along with no smart cover UI).

It does!!! I was about to post various pictures for comparison, but then i wiped my device and lost them all.
Camera was indeed the only thing for me to keep stock fw, but now i'm very happy with my CM12 - HTC M9 combination.
Just like me, you can backup your current rom and try my combination.
If it doesn't suits you, you can always fall back to your backup

true Another reason to make me use CM12 I'll try that combi!
I can confirm. HTC M9 port from Jishnu Sur (search him on g+ because none of his works is allowed here in xda...) it's the best camera for aosp roms. I tried all the cameras listed above but I ended up to use g2 camera port because of the quality of the pictures, but some day ago Jushnu Sur released his port of the M9 camera and I think it's absolutely the best. I can vouch for HTC M9 port mod. It. is. Nails! The closest thing you will get to the G3 stock camera, but with more options. Previously the reason I hadn't switched to a AOSP rom was due to camera quality.
Ok, looks like you guys have not tried ALL cameras.
The only camera with stock like quality in low light is the LG G2 port. This HTC M9 one is not anywhere near that.

I tested the same picture, with the same light and it had the exact same quality. I took a pic with stock, flashed to CM12 and took a pic with this ported camera just minutes after.
There was no difference, whatsoever. How did you performed your test to notice any differences?

Maybe you previously installed something that messed up the configurations used by the camera, because i can guarantee the pictures are exactly like stock. And i do not conform with mediocre results, look at this picture, this is the results i get, far away from abysmal...

That indeed is a very reasonable result!
Tried the app again. Unfortunately (still) the screwed up UI. Using a 13mp resolution is almost impossible. Will try to find an acceptable rom/app dpi combination.
Now, when using 532dpi (stock RR), only 10mp is doable (tried stock and 560dpi app versions so far). The 13mp preview is very much warped. Too much so, alas.
G2 port is best
i try lenovo v6 and htc M9 cam from jinur
i think g2 is best quality

Hey guys, I've got a quick question according the camera on AOSP ROMs. Is there any way of recording a 4K or slow motion video on an AOSP ROM? I did try a few cameras before when I had cm12, but I did not find those features in any of the camera apps I've tested.
So if this is possible, then what camera app would I have to use?
luizffgarcia this photo look great , i have to try that camera app

[Q] Did Samsung make revisions to the S4?

Hello,
Today, I bought 2 second hand White Frost Galaxy S4's (i9505). Long story short, I was going to just buy one, but both were reasonably priced and I decided I would keep the one in better condition and sell the other one. Reasonable thinking right? They're the same phone after all? Seemingly not.... it seems.
The software on the device is exactly the same, as confirmed by the About section of Settings and the user interface is identical in speed and what not, but here's the thing.
1. The camera lens seems to be different on one. One has a slightly larger lens (At least from looks alone) and it reflects a different colour. The other seems to be slightly smaller. Strangely enough, in my camera tests, the smaller one seems to perform far better than the bigger one, which is a worry.
2. The display on one is less 'vibrant' than the other, both are more vibrant than my Xiaomi however.
3. The one with the 'better rear camera' seems to have a worse front facing camera that seems to seems to overexpose photos more when held in the same place as the other S4.
4. The white frost texture is different. On one, it's very faint and you can just make out the little diamonds that make it up. The other, they're more clearly marked and visible.
Both phones look identical from a far, but it seems evident that they have different hardware or have been built differently. They're both I9505's though and both seem to have the stickers, boxes and what not to prove it.
Has anyone else had this? I will upload some photos when I get chance maybe tonight.

The better camera, slightly purple hue, no ring and more gap between the lens and the edge.
The worse camera, green hue, a ring around the larger lens and smaller gap.
Is it possible the second one is an aftermarket sensor? Surely not? Neither show signs of butchery.
Attempt to put both units into download mode. Tell us the results.
Using e.g. 2 different camera sensors for the same model is not uncommon. Didn't Samsung admit recently, that they're using both Sony and Samsung camera sensors for the S6 ?
Yes they did, but the S4 never had the issue with camera sensors, or the people here would have known about it in 2013.

OK, Thanks for this useful piece of info. I'll have a look what this turns up. It's night now, so going to see if the cameras react differently in lower light conditions. The unfortunate thing is, one of the reasons I bought the S4 is because I know it has a blisteringly good camera. I've been told it's still one of the best even 2 years on, which is why you can imagine I was so disappointed when I realized one seemed to have a better camera than the other. I've stupidly let the battery drain on the one with the good camera, so I can't test the low light conditions to see if it's better.
I've used your code, sure enough, the firmwares are different. Does this mean I could load a better camera firmware or perhaps the phone is due a standard Samsung update? Both are still on 4.x:

Green Lens:

Very possible. I've been doing some research, apparently the Purple sensors are made in China, the Green sensors are made in Taiwan, both supposedly to the same spec and should provide identical results, but clearly that isn't the case, the purple sensor seems to do a much better job and this disappoints me. What's worse, I've already fallen in love with the S4. It's exactly what I wanted from a phone since getting rid of my Nexus 4 which the lack of an SD started to get on my nerves.
That may explain the camera differences I suppose, but it doesn't explain the other differences. Again, one has a slightly different screen, it's certainly less vibrant. Not noticeably so when used on its own, but certainly when next to the other S4. Could that be caused by use maybe or is that different hardware? Further to that, what about the one with the worse front facing camera. I've looked at it closer and it seems the front facing sensor is ever so slightly higher than on the other S4 which means perhaps the light distribution isn't so even? Also, those other optical sensors don't seem to be the same, slightly higher it seems? Perhaps this one has had a new screen installed.... nightmare this is seeing as the one with the possible aftermarket screen has the camera I prefer. Wtf?
Also, while all those things can be explained, rear camera perhaps a different sensor, screen perhaps slightly different due to use, different screen explaining front facing camera.....
It could also explain the white frost thing, perhaps the aftermarket screen has a slightly different white frost look. I guess it would be wise to keep the one with the OEM screen and not let the camera thing bother me too much...
I might place the device in a tripod and take a photo of the same thing and see how it looks

Just ran Antutu,
1 device got 30375
other got 30124
so realistically, they're both genuine, but I'm getting the impression that perhaps one has had a replacement screen (maybe not a very good one). That'll probably be the one I sell, even if the sensor is better on that one. I think with the green sensor, you have to focus more carefully. Not ideal. I can do more tests I guess.

Disgusting sharpening

The first thing I noticed when using the camera on this phone was how the images looked over processed. Most notably, I did a digital zoom photo yesterday and the sharpening on it was disgusting. It didn't even look like a photo.

See what I mean? All I did was zoom in and take a photo. It looks horrible.
Look at this picture for example
Even just zoomed in a bit you can see way too much sharpening going on
Now I know this phone is a "budget phone" but it supposedly has the same lens as the Galaxy S7 so that isn't really an excuse. It looks like it comes down to it being the processing that moto put in.
Can anybody out there please let me know if rooting my phone and shooting RAW will produce cleaner photos? I would have to guess so, since I can control the sharpening myself. I haven't been able to find any RAW samples from this phone.
is it a software thing? I've converted to snap camera on whatever device.
I'm afraid it's in the firmware. Any camera app I've tried yields the same results
U should probably return or replace u your phone I had the same issue without even zooming
The phone couldn't focus on things right next the camera mine also had pink tints while recording
So I got mine replaced
Now everything works good
It's also the processor. The G5 plus has the 625 while the S7 had the 820 allowing for much better image processing.

Well it focuses just fine, and pictures in day light look alright but there is some heavy noticeable processing going on in the moto firmware.
This picture looks pretty good but if you zoom in just a bit you can really see the over sharpening.
Here is a photo of my Nexus 5x
It looks much cleaner to me. Less over processing and less sharpening artifacts. The processor on the G5 Plus should be pretty comparable to the 808 in the N5x so I really don't think its a processor issue. It seems to me like it was a design choice by Moto. All of the sample photos I have seen also have too much sharpening. I am strongly considering just rooting the device and shooting raw. At least then I can control the sharpening myself
Well then we would have to wait for an update then

It's also the processor. The G5 plus has the 625 while the S7 had the 820 allowing for much better image processing.

It should make no difference, if you do the same processing in software - other than perhaps taking slightly longer to process the photo?
Otherwise, we'll have to shoot RAW if we want the best quality I guess?
It seems to me however, that any settings affecting the image processing quality should have parameters which could be changed?

The processor contains the ISP or the Image Signal Processor which controls HDR, white balance, auto focus, exposure, color filters and so on. The better the ISP the better the image. So while the 2 phones have the same sensor they will never have the same image results because they have different processors and the more powerful chips have better ISP on board resulting in better images even with the same sensor.
The strength of this camera's focusing is in the sensor chip - "dual pixel focus".
All the other things you mention such as white balance, HDR, color filters are applied after the RAW image is taken - so, there's really no reason that you couldn't generate the same quality of image.
if nothing else, I'm upgrading my everyday knock around (2015) moto e. I won't complain toooooo much.
I have to agree with the OP on this one - there is some horrendous post-processing going on with this phone.
I'd love to get that to stop - even if we have to go to RAW/DNG to get it.
Has anyone done the root/Freedcam method described in another thread on here and gotten DNGs from this camera?
I'd love to see how they look... I'll eventually do it when LOS gets stable enough.
wait couple of days more, there will be some nice mods incoming for g5p camera.

Looks like a promising photo to me!
I'm new around XDA... is will flat field correction and NR come with time, or is this the best we'll get?

Camera2 API support?

Does this phone have it?
If yes, is the support enabled by default? Or do we need to root and enable it later by editing the build.prop?
Can someone with this phone post a screenshot of this app? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.weis.camera2probe
Hi awaaas,
Looking for this phone too? I have created the lounge at kaskus, you might want to check it out. Reminds me of old days.
Unfortunately, no C2A support yet, at least not in the demo unit.

Long time no see, bud... :highfive:
One of my relatives wants this phone, just want to make sure some of the phone's capabilities that reviewers often left out. For comparison, Redmi Note 5 Pro, the one that compared to this phone a lot, has Camera2 API support, but only if you edit the build.prop first (according to my friend that have it, I don't actually have that phone).
For me myself, I might will be still using my Mi 5s for foreseable future...

:highfive: Yeah, probably several years.
If me, it is me myself who are looking for this phone. RN5P still disabled the C2A, need (temporary) root to enable it. Same with this phone, if no C2A support out of box, at least we can enable it using the same method. But there is a rumour about major OTA update at 30 April. We expect to see a lot of improvement compared to the somewhat "beta" ROM from the media review unit. Let's hope to see the C2A has been enabled in this major update.

Haven't seen it anywhere yet. Only the 4K DCI/UHD and the 1080p has EIS already in the retail unit. The camera app seems will be updated tomorrow to support it. Hopefully, we can see the C2A support too in the next update.
Gcam will not work without camera api2 ! Let's wait and see...
Hope they will update to add support soon. Don't let the stock camera app be the limiting factor of image quality!
I hope someone comes with a GCam port for this phone. As far as what I tested, the phone's rear cam is quite good (except for very low light scenarios).
Also, the front cam desperately needs better balance in colors, dynamic range. Currently, selfie quality is quite decent, the colors are not accurate/natural even under good light (skin has a red tinge). And overall, brightness, noise level etc., could be tweaked a bit too.
Any suggestions for a different app that can bring out better photos out of the front cam??

Hey Aniket, thanks for the SS, can you install this Camera2 API Probe https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.airbeat.device.inspector app, actually, in this app its gives the individual camera parameters for both front & back camera & earlier the app link that I gave, that shows the overall result so basically it was my bad so I'm requesting you to install this app instead now this time & ost the SS once again as I want to know all the parameters for both of the cam of this hone individually.
& is it possible to install Gcam in this hone without rooting or is there any tools available like this MI A1's AIO Toolhttps://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a1/how-to/tool-xiaomi-mi-a1-tool-drivers-unlock-t3742857 so that it can be rooted & unlocked automatically & that can be used by all the novice users, & whether all future OTA updates will be available if bootloader is unlocked & rooted & warranty will be voided or not
