First excuse my winmo-inexperience, I'm an Android user.
My girlfriends TMOUS HD2 has been getting very buggy lately. Clicking anything takes a long time to actually register, and in most applications the phone 'freezes' and hitting the home key doesn't do anything. The phone is virtually unusable.
Recently she got a text message saying there was a new OTA update available (T-Mobile_HD2_MR_Software_3.14.531.1) and I was wondering if this would fix anything? The problem with the update is it will erase everything, and because of the phone locking up all the time I haven't found a way to successfully back up everything.
She's considering buying a new phone but I wonder if there's anything I could try first to fix the HD2.
YES
I would recommend update.
You've said the phone is virtually unstable. You have much to gain and small or none to loose.
I would search for pim backup and install it(if you can, if not, you have nothing to loose anyway), back it up to SD card. Remove SD card and update the firmware from T-Mobile.
Good luck.
also, if you are in a good reception area, microsoft myphone can back up data rather quickly that can then be restored after updating. Or just backup everything you can to the sim card. Won't be perfect, but might be enough.
I was able to get Microsoft My Phone to work and performed the update. It seems to have fixed most issues.
I'd love to install Android on it though, she would much prefer it over Winmo.
Month ago I got my OTA update for kit kat but silly me didnt realize I had to reset the phone to factory setting before doing the update.
So it got bricked due to the next launcher being installed. It got stuck on finishing installation and had to force reset and was always stuck in boot mode.
So then I went into safe mode and reset the phone and viola kit kat started but took so long to load.
Now its back to normal however zooming into images is slower the phone naturally feels a bit slower like scrolling pdf files etc.
When I click something that brings up the keyboard I swear there is a little wait time for it to appear.
I think my kit kat rom is broken that the fiasco and only barely got through and is probably missing some files? I never get any error messages or anything like that. The phone works perfect except the slower performance that I see.
I dunno if its the phone or my imagination
Do you all think the kit kat official update could have been incomplete yet the phone works fine with no errors and all apps work?
Or am I just worried about nothing?
PS this phone was never rooted or anything simply because I cannot do it. I don't know how its too technical and I don't want to be greedy and try to flash roms and stuff and then it might brick and the whole process looks so complicated.

I notice a slowdown of the 2 finger pull down but I think I'm the only one who uses that. It saves a step to get to the shortcuts.
Newer software is often slower. News at eleven.
KitKat is no exception, but either ART or the Dalvik patches should speed it up a little.
So there is nothing to worry about? we wait for google to release a patch to fix the Nexus 4?
Despite the update failure at last point and forced restart of the phone and boot loop that was fixed with wiping to factory settings there is no concern?
Everything still went smoothly right?
I mean if my phone was screwed in the process and the rom is corrupted surely something would be giving an error when I try to open it right?
Hell before my N4 would say simcard removed and lost signal, please reinsert and reboot phone now with this kit kat that I put it works perfect.
Surely a corrupted rom won't work so great right?
Since release 2 of the N dev preview, I've really been pretty impressed with the stability and features, especially multi-windows. I seem to use that on a daily basis, either referencing 1 window while I do something on another window, or just 1/2 watching some vid while I do something else. The size of the Pixel C seems to work well with the multi windows, I have the feature on my 6P rom but don't use it anywhere as much.
The quick tiles and notifications are also decent. Usually the very 1st thing I do id unlock and root, but I've felt no need to do so. The apps I use have all worked, I know some folks had issues with some.
Also, the OTA install was also excellent, as easy as it gets.
How are you all liking N?
I'm really getting on with it, too. I think the testament to the OS is that it seems a bit more intuitive. Much like you were saying about not rooting, I don't feel the need to with the Pixel C at this point.
I also enjoy the fluidity of the OS in comparison to MM, it just seems smoother.
Does the OTA update from stock 6.0 work?
Does it still wipe all data from the tablet?
thanks

I'm wracking my brain to try and remember if it wiped my data and I just can't remember. Sorry.
Here is what I did; I signed up for the dev beta, then took the upgrade more or less like an OTA from 6.0 and it worked great! No flashing, nothing. Heck I didn't even put in a custom recovery. It took a little to download and install. I just can't remember if it asked me to restore all my apps and I said yes or it was still there.
I'm pretty sure it would say something about deleting all your data, but again I'm just not remembering. If you get it, please come back and let us know.

Thats a good point about the OS being as fluid as it is, very true. I can't wait to see the release version and what if anything else is added.

The beta program wipes data completely. It is like a typical fullvwipe or in HTC terms, a RUU.
I think I didn't have a full wipe when I changed to N.

AFAIK the OTA doesn't wipe your data. Flashing via fastboot wipes. They also started releasing flashable zips beginning with Dev Prev 2, which also don't wipe. Idk if you can just flash that zip over Marshmallow.
as to the OP query, I like it a lot. I'm impressed by the options and, much more so, by the stability.

I needed to revert because mtp file transfer didn't work. Also every time I connected the tablet on adb it was immediately forcefully shutdown and couldn't start until I plugged the cable.
Other than that, I didn't find an option to enable usb tether....but then again I didn't find this option in marshmallow (afterwards)...what the **** google?
Oh and mtp is also extremely unreliable back on marshmallow. I don't know what the **** they did with this tablet. I believe I will jump on the next tablet bandwagon if I happen to see one....
OTA to Android N is non-disruptive. The way back is.
I have many issues with Android N but cannot go back because of the full wipe.
I hoped that I will be able to use non tablet apps in the half screen mode but that does not work. I am loosing sound when disconnecting headphones. Some apps crash. You Tube cannot specify quality setting, public wifi hot spot without Internet connectivity drains battery quickly.
I regret my decision of installing Android N.

There was way too many non compatible apps for my liking with N. Firefox would always crash, widgets wouldn't work with certain apps, I'd get random freezes, the Youtube app seemed jacked kinda, and overall...I thought the tablet seems LESS responsive. I switched back to MM.
Dude, all you have to do is back up all your data to Google (you can enable it in the Backup & Restore) Drive. When you opt out of the Beta it sends you an OTA file for MM. When it uninstalls N and reinstalls MM it literally finds the fact that you reset your tablet back to MM and re-installs everything for you. It worked flawlessly for me last night. Wasn't a pain in the butt in the slightest.
Actually at the end I reverted back to Android. You are right that all apps are automatically reinstalled however they are not configured, and you loose any local data.
I'm running Android N and want to use Smart Lock, but whenever I try setting Smart Lock or a trusted device, location, etc, it says I can't utilize Smart Lock because my device is encrypted. I've never setup encryption, and I can't remove encryption either. I can't even activate OK Google from any screen, and it's all because of the encryption. Is this a mandatory feature of Android N?
Has anyone got OK Google to work on all screens and lockscreen?
Google N is good but this is a preview issue so there's a fair few bugs within, e.g. YouTube crashing, low benchmark scores, dual screen having limited functionality and random error codes when opening apps.
I've reverted to MM and the process was super simple.
I'll wait for the third iteration and see if that irons out these issues, but N is very promising and I feel it'll really help release the potential of this tablet.
I just ordered my tablet and it shipped today. I was wondering if it is worth updating to Android N right away or stick with marshmallow
Stick with mm if u seek stability

I'm enjoying it but where is the May stability update?
It worked well for me. Only real problem I had was app compatibility. Use it as a media device, so HBO GO, Hulu, TNT, etc crashing on me led me to revert. Can't wait for N to be finalized and apps to be made compatible with split screen.
So like the title says, I'm a new Nexus 6P user, and I had problems out of the gate.
I bought the device 2nd hand from a guy off craigslist, after my S6 edge started over heating after I had the screen replaced (don't buy Samsung "edge" phones, I know your careful, but on the off chance you drop it, your in a world of trouble).
I tested the phone, before I bought it, it appeared pretty much brand new, everything worked. When I got home, and hard reset it again for good measure all hell broke lose.
After a hard reset the phone wanted to update to build 19 something. After the update and a reboot, the phone app kept crashing before I could finish the setup process. The only thing I could do is factory reset it again. This appeared to clear up that problem. I did the near by device thing, and restored it from what Google could find out about my S6 edge. I wish it was more of a restore like what you can do in the iOS world, but it's better then what we had before so it's cool. I noticed that Chrome would crash everytime you tried to use it only in less I uninstalled the update. After I got the phone to the point where I wanted it, I thought I was free in the clear. When I started trying to use music apps, they all crash. Apple Music, Spotify, Soundcloud. Then I noticed YouTube also crashed the same way. When I tried to make a phone call, the phone app would crash too... So the phone was useless. I downloaded the SDK and the most current build which I think was 20 something. I followed a guide on here and formatted the phone reinstalling everything around build 20. The only thing this fixed was the phone issue.
I could now make phone calls without it crashing, but I was in the same boat with some applications working, and the same ones that didn't work not working. I flashed this phone 5, or 6 times, with the last time me formatting the userdata. I read that it wasn't a good idea because it could lock me to only 32GB ( I had a 64GB version), but after I did the flashing along with the usedata format, I still had 64GB of useable space, however I still had the same issue with the same types of applications crashing. I tried older builds, same issue (also the older builds all had the problem with the phone app crashing to the point that the phone wasn't usable).
I ended up sending the phone to the manufacturer, which appears to be in the same metroplex I live in. Hopefully they can find a hardware problem under warenty and fix it. I'm making this post to see if anyone else ran into similar issues, and if anyone knows if this is a hardware build issue, that was hopefully resolved.
I'm sorry to be so long winded...
Is the phone rooted and running a custom ROM?

Everything appeared to be stock, I don't know if it was rooted before, but when I was finished with it it was stock, I even locked the boot loader again (it was locked before I started flashing it)

Hello folks, new to the forum here. My wife and I both recently got Galaxy S7s from Sams, and our carrier is AT&T. For whatever reason, the push updates never happen on my phone, so I am still in 6.0.1, but my wife's has gotten 7.0 pushed to hers. Problem is that after a while (perhaps a couple of days), her phone starts to develop a persistent lag, where she can't really do anything at all, like typing or changing apps, so severe is the lag. The phone was basically useless at that point, so she would have to restart the phone to restore its normal function. But the lag would always return, and she would need restart multiple times per day.
Talking to Samsung and AT&T proved fruitless at getting any troubleshooting done other than factory resetting the phone. That of course fixed the problem, but as soon as the 7.0 push update happened, the lag came back. We eventually got AT&T to send us a new phone on warranty. But just recently her phone got 7.0 pushed and sure enough the lag is back. Clearly the problem is software related, as my phone is still 6.0.1 and runs perfectly.
I am pretty uninitiated in the Android world, and so I was hoping you folks might be able to help us restore her phone, as I am certain we will get no useful help through the "official" channels. We aren't looking to root or anything, but if there is troubleshooting or a guide we could walk through, we would sure appreciate the help.
Thanks!
I had the same problem when my S7 did the update from 6.0.1 to Android 7. I asked AT&T to change the phone and they did. When the new phone did the update the lag problems started again. I downgrade to stock 6.0.1 and disable the update service with Package Disabler. Now I keep on android 6.0.1 (which I like more than the Nougat) and I do not have lag problems.
You could try to flash the Nougat update manually. It's not exactly simple, but a fair amount of reading up on it should prepare you. Obviously you'll lose all personal data, and there's even a chance it might still be laggy for you. There is a guide on how to do this on droidviews.com that helped me tremendously. Make sure that if you try this, you plug in the phone only after it is in download mode and only after Odin is open. Plus you'll need the drivers and to make sure the phone is in USB Debugging mode via developer options, as well as turn on OEM unlock before you try this. Good luck!
