Okay, I'm trying to get in the Sailfish game here. I bought a broken Xperia Z and brought it back to life just to find out the bootloader is unlockable. I'm SO angry because Virgin Mobile is refusing to unlock it because I'm not a customer (nothing wrong with the IMEI, I checked). Anyway, this has just doubled down my sheer determination to get out from under the carriers foot.
So I want to play too. I already gave my info to sledges and said I could help with documentation (I was told to hold tight). BUT since that Xperia is dead to me I wanted to know if I should go pick up a Nexus 4 and help with that adoption (install and test), or should I go get something else like a Moto G or a Nexus 5 and start playing. Where would I be the most help to the community?
Thanks,
Dinsdale247
Sounds like Nexus 4 and the Samsung S3 LTE are getting all the love, I was planning to get the Jolla phone, but after I found out the Nexus 5 was about the same price, with much better specs, and the fact that it is one of the most open phones you can get, I was looking at putting sailfish on it when it becomes available. I was actually surprised that work started on the Nexus 4 and not together with the Nexus 5, I guess no one whose porting has one.
It depends on what you're looking for in a phone, or if you just any phone that you can get the Sailfish OS on.
I would help with porting Sailfish to Nexus 5, but I have exams coming up, and no experience with porting.
There is a reason Nexus 4 is getting the attention.
It all comes back to the Hybris project. Many developers are using it as THE means to get ports jump started to Android hardware. Not only Sailfish, but Ubuntu Touch and Open Source webOS are contributing. Consensus seems to have been reached by the various developer communities that Nexus 4 and factory 4.2.2 offer the best hosting for modern hardware porting efforts with up-to-date spec and software stability on which to build.
IMHO, Nexus 4 is the clear choice for users in the field who want options. It's a stellar piece of hardware; yes there are more dynamically spec'd devices coming everyday, but mostly that capability is not being used for anything short of intense 3D gaming. If you want a solid phone that will have the spec to test unoptomized software Alphas and Betas this is a great unit and it has the radio hardware for near universal GSM access. The latest Android builds remain available, you can port Ubuntu Touch, you can (now) port Sailfish OS, you can add multi-rom capability and boot into Firefox OS... PLUS... a rumor has recently reached my ears that soon you will be able to port Open webOS to the N4...
What other phone is going to give you that many options? I say, Nexus 4, FTW baby!!! :highfive:
Hi everyone,
I have a redmi note 2 prime, buyed 4 months ago.
I like it much, except for the camera and the community development: they ported the cm 12 and other cool things, but I come from a nexus 5 and I miss it a lot from this point of view. I know the nexus is the most modded phone, but from a phone which sold that much (redmi note 2) I was expecting more development (I know that the kernel source is needed for this...). Also helio x10 was a bit disappointing: good battery, but it's slower of the sd800 (I compared both) of my old nexus 5 and it gets hot when playing.
That said, I saw the new redmi note (redmi note 3 pro) and now I want to buy that.
I would sell my redmi note 2 prime (let's say for 130-40€) and buy the redmi 3 pro for 210€
So for 70-80€ this would be the main improvements:
Helio x10 -> snapdragon 650 (from 45000 to over 70000 on antutu)
2gb ram -> 3gb RAM
13mpx rear camera -> 16mpx (hopefully does better)
Single flash led -> dual tone
3000mah battery -> 4000mah
No fingerprint sensor -> fingerprint (I really like it)
Plastic body -> metal
Now the questions:
Very important to me, will this phone be more easy to development (because of snapdragon instead of mediatek) and will it actually have more development? (Will the kernel source be public as for other xiaomi snapdragon devices?)
For you, is it worth to upgrade from rn2 prime to rn3 pro for 70-80€?
It has passed one week since the launch of rn3 pro and still there is no reviews (not a single one). Why?
Other thoughts about it are welcome.
Thank you.
Yes, buy it. It has no sd card support which sucks but rom development is more feasible.
There is sd card support!!u can put one sim and sd card at the same time!!

i think the most interesting in reno 3 pro for me are volte and global band support (including cdma2000). i would like to switch to this phone which volte is widely adopted in my country.
whether or not mod exist depends on ..
1. the sales volume and most important 2. source code availability. xiaomi will never opensource as you wish.

1. Sales volume is very hard to predict. Maybe tomorrow they announce the redmi note 4 and nobody buys the redmi note 3 pro anymore.
2. This is what I want to fully understand. I know that xiaomi doesn't release the kernel source, but I also heard that snapdragon socs have public code which help developing ROMs (I am a noob about this, so I'm not sure what I'm talking about).
For example, redmi note 2 kernel source is not public, but other devices with snapdragon socs have more roms and development (for example mi4iand others). The mi4 has even an official CyanogenMod and windows 10.
(3) Bootloader? I know that xiaomi blocks the bootloader of their devices now. If I order the rn3 pro from China, will I get a Chinese ROM or international? (I would love in Italian, but English is good too). Anyway I would request the code to unlock it after a few days/weeks.

There are the kernel sources of other dmartphones wirh helio x10, but we miss the sources of device-specific drivers. So if xiaomi doesn't release the source it will be hard too.
For the bootloader/language question.
You will get the phone with locked bootloader and with the chinese-english rom. The global rom may be release, but it's not confirmed.

Maybe they'll release the driver sources for the 3 Pro as it's being sold in India. Don't know if it has the same hardware, though. Screen, sensors, etc might be different from the RN 2 and 3 in the 3 pro.

Currently using Redmi Note 2 Prime, but with the release of Redmi Note 3 Pro i'm also considering change my phone
I'm also an owner of a RN2 Prime and considering an upgrade to the RN3 Pro. But not immediately, about 6 months from now. This should be plenty of time for these 3 things to happen:
1. The RN3 Pro's price to drop to a stable point
2. Reliable user feedback to be available online
3. Custom development activity to (hopefully) start
I'm going to China in March (10 days, from the 2nd)... If I manage to get one (or two for my friend) redmi not 3 pro 3/32gb for the original chinese price (about 180€), I will definitely buy that. I saw from reviews a big improvement in camera performance, cpu performance, battery performance. And the lovely metal body with fingerprint sensor... I saw photo/video/gaming samples and review here: http://gizchina.it/2016/01/xiaomi-redmi-note-3-pro-la-recensione-di-gizchina-it/ (it's in italian) and I want it so much. Still, I'm scared about the amount of development that the device is going to have.

Google's strong hand against defragmentation, manufacturers can only launch new phones with Android Oreo
Since you have to put the batteries, make Flyme for our Meizu Pro 5 or let install roms by opening the code. Flyme skip if they want Oreo (you have a few months left) and start with Android P
Hopefully someone can make a ROM for the Pro5, because if not nothing, darkness with Flyme. Change of mobile in a year or two (with 4 already well amortized) :fingers-crossed:
Google closed Nougat certification in March, all new Play Certified devices must launch with Oreo..clic here :good:
Android oreo will come to meizu in 2029 don't wait.
Go and buy another phone because Google kicked Meizu's ass i think.
Totally agree!!
Meizu Pro 5 with Flyme dies:
Flyme 5 .. Android 5.1
Flyme 6 ..
- Chinese version: January 2017 based on Marshmallow (Android 6.0)
-Global version July 2017 based on Lollipop (Android 5.1)
Flyme 7 .. based on Nougat (Android 7.1.2), are there a beta version now, I think (May 2018)
Flyme 8 .. based on Oreo, far far away
Flyme 9 .. based on P, I do not think we'll see him in this life!!
------
PD:
Nougat .. June 2016 (Meizu level now)
Oreo .. Agoust 2017
Android P .. Agoust 2018
-------
you wait seated or better don't wait!
I've been observing that Meizu decided to abandon Global market and concentrate on local Chinese market. And it is not that they are very up to date in the Chinese market. Also abandon Android rate
Chinese versions (A): Flyme 6.3.0.2A (Android 6) (2018-4-12)
It's not stable. Battery drain. Many chinese apps (they are easily deleted) and Google Play Store is a simulation. *The applications hang, the firmware is not friendly with google apps, "No suitable appstore found" in some apps. Stay on 6.1.0.0A if you can! but it's very old version based on Android 5.1. You have to returned to the old version of the firmware, becase this 6.3.0.2A can not be used.
International (global) versions (G): 6.1.0.0G (Android 5.1) but from Flyme 5.1.11.0G Google Mobile Services (GMS) was removed....
Resurrecction Remix with Android 7.1.2. very good, the best we have!! Thank you, Faust93!! Good job!!
Meizu oficial firmware (that running ok) is on Android 5.1.. It's very sad!! No?
Ahahahaha Flyme 8 on our PRO5 ?!
More probable to see the end of this world before this happens...
It is frustrating when you spend a lot of money on an Android mobile and you see that the "little time" becomes obsolete. In the next mobile that I bought I will look for a very good policy of updates both by the manufacturer and by the Xda community. Technology is like that, in two years any phone is already very old.
In our case we have three options: settle for what we have, resort to the only ROM if we do not have money or buy a new phone if we have it.
That your Android phone does not receive the latest updates both system and security yes, it is very bad. I am against all brands that do not.
The easiest thing is to buy a new one, but I'm going to try to extend the life of this phone a little longer, at the moment it's not bad with Nougat, to see if a ROM release or a new ROM with Oreo comes out. I do not expect anything new because it is old and almost nobody has it. While It's working, I'll continue with him. I also do not like the phones with Notch
I currently feel that the purchase of this mobile phone has not gone well, how I feel like changing it but I do not want to throw away the 400 euros that the Pro 5 cost in the trash.

Bit to ne honest, I stilo love my PRO5 and its camera
I bought a Huawei Honor View 10 in May, I will not buy anything from Meizu again. Now I'm happy!
guys, its happening, finally, you ca download flyme 6.3.0.3g from flymeos.com!
not that i'd ever buy meizu again, but wow, with this speed we can expect flyme 7
for pro5 in 2024!
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah!!!!!! How does it work?
yap,flyme8 for pro5,but it is android N
Even Meizu has android N i dont understand why only 7.0 not 7.1. Many app not compatible with this android version.
So I was planning on buying this phone.
But before I buy this phone I have a few questions to ask.
Will this phone get official LineageOS? if yes, how long does it take?
how was your experience with the phone so far? Was it good or bad, and why?
Will the price of this phone will drop in a few weeks?(for Malaysia set)
Thank you!

My opinions:
1. It's still in the earlier stage for this phone, so LineageOS maybe take time to be "tasted".
Need some patient here..?
2. Its bad for the software. The curve aren't smooth enough at the bottom(not sure yet is that from software or hardware).
Im also facing wifi tethering problem where its connected but no internet.
(Im starving for custom rom ?)
Hardware seems to be ok but im still confuse with gsmarena n cpu-z where gsmarena state the cpu clock are 2.2GHz but the cpu-z state its only 1.96GHz.
3. This year end sale would do, maybe. Discount only.
The price trend maybe still the same just like the M1 generation.
Just sharing my opinion..

1. I dont think you will get that Lineage OS anytime soon since the TWRP for this phone not even out yet.
2. If you had used Asus Phone before, their OS is pretty plain if you compared to the features rich Samsung or Huawei. The phone is very responsive and the screen looks great compared to my Samsung A7 2017. For the amount money you pay, you get the fastest mid tier processor, 6GB RAM and 64GB Storage, nothing to complain form me. The only problem I see now is the wordings being cut at both left and right edge at the bottom, and it seems I am unable to format any of my Sandisk Ultra 128GB MicroSD as portable storage (the card was used in my Samsung phone and it works well all the time) but It can be formatted as internal storage using adoptable storage. So far I had tried 3 Ultra cards all just refuse to work properly.
3. Direct D is selling at RM999 for the 6GB version, you should be able to find some selling on Lazada or Lelong slightly cheaper, maybe RM50 or so. They are doing promotion on the M1 at RM899 for the 6GB version but when they are selling at RM999 for the M1, I can find the M1 selling for like RM859 on lazada for the 6GB version. So unless you are getting the M1, yes you can find some with reduce price if you look hard enough, but for the M2, maybe just slight cheaper than the SRP for now.
Better not to buy, phone has lot of bugs Asus never gonna fix the issues. Better to switch mi or Nokia android one series with zero bugs.
1. Will this phone get official LineageOS? if yes, how long does it take?
Let me just clarify that I am happy with stock android because I bought this phone strictly for work. I am not even going to root. However, people who want to flash custom roms have to wait. The unencrypted source code was recently released. Hopefully, development can pick up pace and there will be custom roms soon.
2. How was your experience with the phone so far? Was it good or bad, and why?
It is good. For the price I paid, this phone is performing extremely well. I debloated it as soon as I got it out of the box and now the stock android coupled with good hardware is excellent. I have not noticed the notch issues, maybe because it is a recent purchase and it was fixed, or maybe because I am using Nova launcher and the notches at the bottom seem fine to me.
The phone is fast and responsive and the battery lasts forever. Call quality, network reception, wifi/bluetooth connectivity and external storage are all working fine for me. There are no complaints.
The camera seems sub-par. I am not an experienced photographer so maybe others could use it better. The photo quality is far from what I got from my older pixel phone but I don't mind because I only use it to scan documents, for which it works well.
3. Will the price of this phone will drop in a few weeks?(for Malaysia set)
Unlikely, seeing the pricing trend of the older max pro m1 in India
Thank you for the reply!
I think will buy the phone, but not now... maybe in a few more months or when Asus decide to put an discount
Oh and yesterday(1 jan 2019) price for Max Pro M2 got 5% off to RM819... so yeah I'm gonna wait

That the reason why I asked about LineageOS(or any other custom roms). If Asus not gonna fix it, then maybe some developer will.
About switch to Mi or Nokia, I prefer to have pure android experience... I know Mi and Nokia have in Android One program but Mi don't have audio jack while Nokia too expensive for me.

Lol, he must have someone on the inside. Every oems fix the issues through updates. Max pro M1 received like 15 updates I think. So don't worry it will get fixed. This is the best mid ranger right now.

I'm more interested into small waterdrop notch and usb type-c compare with max pro m2 notch and micro usb.
to my understanding that Redmi note 7 using Samsung sensor and its only 12 MP interpolate to 48 MP but not for Redmi note 7 Pro which is using Sony imx586 that actually real 48MP
Redmi note 7 Pro will release in China in Chinese New Year(probably) and after 1 month maybe we can see this phone for global set

Its not confirmed and honestly don't keep high hopes.
I remember Asus promising two major updates to ZMP M1 at launch. A Q&A session with one of their official also indicated this. BUT "major system update" cannot be conclusively termed as Android P & Q if we go by the track record of companies. In fact, we have seen brands go back on their solemn promise (Moto ?) only to face backlash and then provide a delayed update.
Long story short - we have a good probability of getting Q but don't bet your life on it - not yet !
yes definitely we will get Android 10 on Pro M1 but in 2020 when google is about to launch android 11....remember android pie released officially by google and asus gave that after almost 10 months passed....with beta program and still too many bugs....we all know that asus camera result is so poor....IT IS STRICTLY NECESSARY ASUS SHOULD COMPLETELY CHANGE THEIR SOFTWARE ENGINEER TEAM OTHERWISE IT WILL LOSE MOBILE BUSINESS...
What about custom Rom development of Android 10, it has been officially launched today.
