My Moto G4 64/4GB (latest stock ROM) has begun showing odd memory usage, NEVER showing that it is using over 1.8 GB of RAM under any circumstances. I have also been having countless UI and app crashes and lots of lag. I have tried every suggestion I can find to try and resolve this but have had no luck. If anyone could give me an idea of what may be going on it would be greatly appreciated.

Hello.
I've read various other topics about how not having too much ram is good, expected, and so on.
However, when I first got my n7, it would use perhaps about 50% of the RAM, without any apps. I could run a bunch of apps, and they'd be responsive, I could move between apps quickly and easily, and everything was smooth. I've tried multiple roms, and kernels, and everything was good.
Until lately. Suddenly, when I boot, apparently i'm using up 75-90% of the ram. I've manually added up the amount of ram being used, and found that the apps that were running in the background were only using about 128mb. Starting applications takes a while, scrolling is laggy, and switching apps can take up to 15 seconds at times.
I figured it was a kernel, so I switched back to a reliable kernel. Nope, everything was the same. Was it the rom? I've tried AOKP, Dirty AOKP, paranoid android, and a few others. Bootloader perhaps? I've switched between clockwork and TWRP. Cleared the caches. Tried changing the I/O governers, various schedulers. Still laggy, and still using up a lot of RAM.
Should I back up my data, and do a factory restore? Or am I just missing something that's staring me, ready to slap me in the face with it's obviousness?
Thanks in advance.
Depends on which apps are you running in background , like for ex Chameleon Launcher uses around 100mb of ram . Better go back to stock and see if the problem persists

hello,
i'm getting crazy with this annoying micro stuttering and occasional lagging. it's happening everywhere - home screens, app drawer, settings, apps like xda and tapatalk. it's not major, but it's enough to be seen and to drive me nuts. i tried stock KK, Cloudy stock 2.5 and Cloudy G3. i also tried several kernels - stock, bruce Kernel and Dorimanx. i also tried tons of different settings for cpu governor and hotplugging; i tried the lag mod which have to remove the scrolling lag - it seams that nothing is helping. i tried with and without Greenify (to avoid a lot of resident apps), i also tried both Dalvik and Art - nothing. the slight lag is there - and it's just that - slight stutter, few frames dropped - enough to make you think that some setting will kill it finally. but no matter what i try, that slight lag and stutter is still there. can you give me some suggestions - i'm coming from Galaxy S3, which i used with Beanstalk rom - i experienced 0 lag and stutter and i cannot believe that i see that in a phone like the G2, given the powerful processor and the 2 gb of ram.
please help me not to get insane with that phone

I've only got 550mb of ram free and my phones flying. Not even a little bit of lag. But for the first week or so after re flashing the stock Rom I did get all that lag you were describing. Even after I debloated, flashed Bruce's and did every other mod you can think of. It ended up going away on it's own after a while. Maybe you just need to stick with one setup and let your phone settle.
You can use beanstalk on the g2 as well, if you were interested in going that route again.
I have the same issue. In games it lags and stutters just enough to put you off the game. I have noticed some videos do this as well like youtube. I am still testing this but I am reluctant to spend any time on it as it has a clear issue when other lower spec'd phones run the same games fine. Basic games as well. It is subtle, but the stutter is there. On some games it's can even be a full 1 or 2 second complete lag and game halt. I tried the CPU throttle option in hidden menus and this did nothing.
Can this be hardware problem? I phone LG and the support agent was extremely unhelpful. He said that it would be sent for repair and they will not play games, only flash it and run a test. I'm concerned this will be a classic case of "there was no fault found" and it will be a complete saga for ages. I already had this before with a different phone (different problem) and I'm fed up with phone problems.
Mine is from Vodafone UK store bought. I am tempted to try stock UK firmware to see if this fixes. Shouldn't have to though.... I also might end up trying a custom ROM to see if it goes away. I absolutely love the phone otherwise. I just want it to work.
PS: It runs benchmarks fine with high scores.
1 - 2GB seems to be an upper limit on the RAM. When I clear apps from task list, it always says X of ~1.8GB. Anyone else have this issue?
2 - Experiencing random restarts, probably once every few days. Couple of times happened during a Skype conversation but probably chance. I thought it might be RAM related (above), but it doesn't always happen after long run-times.
3 - Using most audio apps I get a mini-stutter. The only workaround I've seen is PowerAmp increasing buffer size which eliminates it for that app. This does seem to be linked with RAM usage as clearing app list and force closing the audio app to restart will get rid of it. Anyone else?
I've tried clearing both cache through TWRP, hasn't helped. I had to clear data previously through TWRP and re-install an A2017 image which I then rooted. Possibly something got messed up, my only other thought is to restore to stock and to see if it continues.
Any other ideas, or does anyone have the same issues?
Thanks for the help.
Replace it

My A2017G was restarting randomly daily, would freeze even when changing font size... it was a dud!
After trying numerous factory resets and just using all stock apps (did not load any apps from Google Playstore) it still was problematic. I contacted ZTE through Facebook and built a written account of the problems and their reply.
Then I took my phone and print outs of ZTE's replies to the retailer and they replaced the phone. My replaced one works fine.
I have heard that if you have enabled Developer Options do not enable Force GPU or any hardware options as this may cause deeper issues.
So in short build a case around your phones faults and take it back for replacement. No phone in 2016/2017 should be this dodgy during normal use.
Cheers
Aussie
Will be somewhat problematic as I took a gamble with an aliexpress order, but will try and see if they help. Thanks.
But I'm interested if besides restarts, other people have had the same issues, namely:
* Limited RAM availability (2 of 4GB)
* Occasional stutter on audio (posted this on reddit as well, got like 8 upvotes but no solutions, so I suspect it's not just me).
Hey xda-ers,
I have been plagued by this issue for quite some time and wanted to see if it was just me, or if others share my pain.
Since migrating to Nougat I have found that my phone starts to slow down and freeze after some usage. Typically after leaving some apps open.
The problem immediately goes away once i hit Clear All on the recents, thus I think it is a RAM issue.
In all kernerls or Roms I have tried the problem persists, even if selecting "Aggressive mode" for low memory killer.
I always thought that leaving apps open will not impact ram, as android "understands" theses are not being used (hence why all "ram managers" are just snake oil).
So is anyone else getting this slow down after a few hours of use?
Any tips/tricks to help with this?
TL;DR: how do i fix constant low memory on Nougat roms?
It must be a particular app/set of apps that would be causing this. I see from your signature that you are on Nitrogen OS, as am I. In my particular case, I have never seen more than 1.2GB RAM of the 1.8GB used, the usual average is more in the mid to high 800 Meg range. You could check for yourself in settings, under memory, the current usage is shown. There is a further sub menu in there that shows per app memory used. Check and see if you can identify the culprit.
P.S: I do use Greenify, maybe that keeps the RAM usage low? Maybe someone else can chime in with their usage as well.

Hi, thanks for the reply.
I also use Greenify, and when checking the app usage (which i have monitored for a few months), I see that OS uses around 1.2, and chrome and other apps around 100-200mb each.
However, it seems that the moment I have less than 400mb "free" it starts to glitch.
Also, issue persists even with Tesla Rom (which is what i moved to a few months ago).
Maybe this is just the limit of the N4 with newer apps...
For me the android OS is currently around the 350MB mark. Tap on Android OS and see what is using the memory. Maybe the cache is running high for you?
Hello,
I have a stock Moto X force for about 20 months.
I've been suffering from lagging lately (sometimes it takes a few seconds when trying to switch between apps or the keyboard becomes unresponsive). I think it got worse after the 7.0 update.
I've downloaded an app for system monitoring and I've noticed that at times of lag the internal disk activity is maxed (Read & Write are 100% (not sure exactly what that means)) (Can't add attachments). But, cpu performance and ram usage seems fine. I assume some app is causing this but have no suspects at the moment. How should I continue my debug from here ?
Thanks
Hello Juvesss,
Exactly the same phone with the same problem since one week ago... If you solved it please explain me, this is a pain!
No OS upgrade was involved in my case, I have Nougat since a long ago.
Cache wipe did not help. Limiting background processes to 3 helped just a little (developer menu).

I've been noticing this problem too.
Not sure what the cause is.
I've factory reset and that seems to fix the problem for awhile, but it seems to come back over time.
Something in the stock rom must be cluttering the phone.
Dear roweboat56,
It happened to me after 12 months of having it, so for my experience it is not so frequent. How often happened it to you? (To understand better how long will I "enjoy" the factory reset solution...)
Move to a custom rom!
I faced that issue too! The last update was buggy maybe..and the moto services and rest apps by moto are eating a lot of ram and using a good amount of I/O
.
Try this rom by me (on the latest 7.1.2 build with 5th February 2018 security patch)
https://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-turbo-2/general/lineageos-14-1-build-7-1-2-heating-t3757565
Change battery profile to power save, and see the magic
No heating at all!

Hm I noticed after maybe 2 months of use or so?
Im on Latest Stock FW Android N ,using the device since 8months and not find any lag, in my case it lacks a bit when heated a lot.
I didnt disable any of the Moto Services though.
Try using Greenify if it solves the issue. I will not unlock my phone till it gets 14-15month old and see whether the same happens to me
It is strange... In my case the phenomenon suddenly disappeared some weeks ago, so I think some system update messed it all and later another update solved it. I have the impression it was a system problem and not a particular app, because I tried to uninstall the more suspicious apps without appreciating any change.
