Hello everyone,
Short:
Essential phone will only charge. I've tried factory reset, developer options (USB Debugging, MTP), new cables, various ports on various PCs, Safe mode, SIMless operation, Essential drivers, Device Management and nothing.
Long:
The issue I am going to described all stemmed from Android Auto no longer working in my '17 Chevy Malibu. It used to worked, unreliably, but was enjoyable when it was present. For a few months now, nothing. I've had a support case open with Essential for a couple months trying to troubleshoot the issue. I can expand on all the attempts if needed.
After an upgrade to Android 8.1 with Android Auto Optimization that didn't work, some time went by and customer service requested that I upgrade to Android Pie because "it has shown success for customers with connectivity issues". I'm skeptical of this being the solution because an 8.1 device should connect. Being a Sprint customer, I knew it was going to be a month or more before that update hit OTA, so sideloading became my next option. That's when I discovered that my device is not recognized by multiple computers on multiple operating systems.
I am connecting with Anker USB-C to USB-A cable. This cable has shown success with other devices. I have tried other cables as well.
I have enabled developer options and turned on MTP and USB Debugging
I have installed Essential drivers.
I have tried in Safe mode and normal mode.
I have ran many iterations of rebooting with device after change with device connected/disconnected
I browsed this Essential Q&A for any mention of "USB" and tried anything I hadn't tried previously.
When I connect to my Windows 10 computer with Media and MTP packs, the phone only charges.
I do not get the notification to change USB methods.
I do not see Windows installing generic drivers.
I do not hear a Windows sound for recognizing the device.
I do not see any changes in Device Management.
Does anyone have any more suggestions for me to try? I'm trying not to demand a warranty claim and have it repaired.
Thanks for any insight you can give.

Open device manager, uninstall your adb/fastboot /essential drivers that are already there. Download the official drivers from Essential's website and install those.

I have a stupid question...
Is there crap in your charge port...
Take a toothpick... Cut it down... And get the pocket lint out of your port and try again

Hopefully this belongs in this forum, I do have a focus, so I assume so.
So when I cget into connect to PC mode and plug in the usb cord, it does not truly connect with the computer, meaning the red sign thing that means don't disconnect does not appear, the screen just shows the screen with an arrow pointing the usb to the computer.
Would this be a hardware issue?
I've tried my two usb cords on different ports on my laptop.
Any advice?
I've tried more or less every other fix, but there really is no fix online for this issue, can barely find anything.
Use the USB cable that came with the phone. Other ones do not work with the Focus.
Same problem, even when I'm using original cable.
Yeah, I've tried both of my cables, and nothing works.
Kind of nice to know that I'm not alone though. Heh
Same exact problem. Samsung Focus. Original cable that came with that very phone.
I can't get the frigging updates to install because when the phone reboots in Connect to PC mode, the system doesn't recognize that it's been reconnected.
And when I try to use the WP7 support tool, which ALSO requires the phone to be in Connect to PC mode, the computer doesn't know the phone exists.
This is for C2PC mode ONLY. Recognizes fine in normal mode, but update won't complete in normal mode.
same thing intially happened to me. But when in pc download mode you have to make sure that you give your pc 5 mins while connected to your phone. The pc will eventually recognize it! I freaked out too but I did wait for it and it connected. This applies to the windows phone recovery tool, which i ran, and the updates alike. I highly suggest running the recovery tool because I tried updating without it at first and i received the timeout error. Also, make sure you empty in settings histories in the following sections, ie mobile, maps, and search.
You guys and gals are going to LOVE this.
Nothing worked, and of course, my obedient ass was using only the cable that came with my Samsung Focus.
So on a hunch, I decide to borrow my wife's cable from her HTC Surround. The damn thing has "HTC" stamped right on it.
And it worked. PC recognized connection in the Connect to PC state, which it absolutely would not do with the Samsung Focus cable.
As to siralex241's comment, good advice: when you use the Windows Phone 7 Support Tool, after it checks System Requirements, it will say nothing -- not even that it's trying anything, and no hard drive activity -- for a long time. Then it succeeds in one second. The message I saw was that installing updates had taken over 450 seconds.

Solution for update error 800705B4
Same thing happened to me. Kept getting error code 800705B4. Followed steps here and it worked fine. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2530409.
I'm on to the March 2011 update. Been creating the backup for a LONG time now.
Well to be specific I have been getting error 8018121C1 (Something close to that) and all the KB articles say is to use the microsoft fixit tool, but that never works. It mentions that its a problem with the driver installing, and I've read online that when in connect to PC mode, Zune times out the update because it is looking for the drivers for too long. Along with that, other people have said that the device isn't being recognized as the right device. I've checked and so far I've seen that it recognizes as Windows Mobile or Zune. I don't think any of those are the right formats to have the update go through smoothly.
I have given up on updating the phone as of now. That is, until I can find a working solution.
I don't think I should contact Microsoft or AT&T about it either, simply because I think that Microsoft will just give me the KB articles, and AT&T... welll.. its AT&T.
@ jayinatlanta I have yet to try connect to PC with a different cable though.
Hi,
I'm having a real though time trying to connect my galaxy s1 to a pc. Have tried everything, like kies, direct connection, reseted the device, and no joy.
When I plug the cable it makes that sound as it is connecting but it doesn't show in the PC anywhere, nor even in Device manager.
It can get pwr from the usb cable when is connected; already tried with another cable and same thing.
My final goal is to unlock it.
thanks for any help
have you tried put yoy're phone in depurating mode?
I guess yo mean Debugging mode, as I couldn't found Depurating anywhere. Have selected it and the same effect
HI
I had the same problem after getting nowhere with it, for some reason and I don"t know why, I put it in download mode and then connected it to odin and my PC found it I then disconected it and its been fine eversince.

#Samsung Kies always makes problems on Windows x64 !
##I would recommend, if you got 32-Bit Computer, to use that ;-)
#If you Want just flash over Odin, then is this driver package enough

#The Package is also enough for If you want just to connect to mass Storage (Phone's SD Card)
Don't Forget to Thanks, if it was useful for you!

Hi there.
By direct connection you mean the USB Mass Storage mode, right?
It might be some weird, random problem with the samsung system drivers. I used to have such problems about two years ago, back in the days of Froyo. Have you tried re-installing them? There was a link to proper drivers file in one ICS installation tutorial, and those drivers can be downloaded here. If you go about trying this method, lemme know if it worked.
Cheers.
PS: Unlike diklooc there suggested, do not never EVER go back to x86 OS. That's the worst advice. Kapisch?
Did you check your usb port in System ?
Sometimes it stuck with another lastest device
Hi,
have tried everything, and finally only in a WinXP32 could be abble to get the error shown on the file atached.
But nothing (warnings) come up in Device Manager
Unninstalled everything (kies) and tried to install only the driver and nothing happens.
Should I try to mount it on a linux?
or is it dead?
thanks
i have this problem too
wat chan I do???
my sgs can not connect to my PC
This may help...
Hi there - I don't have the same phone as you, but I did encounter the exact same problem. I've been searching around and it looks like the most common fix was to simply replace the cable. I don't know what kind of cable you have, but my phone (a Samsung Focus i917) uses a mini-usb connector. I found that my Amazon Kindle used the same connector.
When I was using the Samsung cable, I'd get intermittent connects and charge power. The OS would report unknown device. When I switched computer's = same result. I switched to my Kindle cable and the computer instantly recognized the device and installed the drivers. After 12 hours of troubleshooting, factory resetting my phone (blah - lost everything) it turned out to be the cable. I know that this isn't an easy troubleshooting step for most people, because who has an extra cable? I just got lucky that my Kindle uses the same connector. I'm now suspecting (due to the prevalence of this connectivity problem coming from people with Samsung phones - there are a LOT of reported issues) that there is probably a Samsung cable problem in general.
Good luck with your phone.

Nasdriver, I currently have a similar problem but mine is related with Samsung Kies as I can't get either my older SGS1 or my newer Samsung Nexus to get recognized by Kies. I also suspected the cable thing and even read it could be a USB port issue but neither of them was my problem (I have 3 cables and 8 ports on 2 computers that result in the same thing). I can connect other devices with the same cables and they work, so I suspect my problem is focused around the Samsung device drivers.
My advice is if you can go in a systematic manner, first focus on the cable (easiest to replace), if you get the same results with a new cable, then focus on the USB physical port, clean it with some Isopropyl alcohol, if the port works for other devices (camera, other phones, etc..) on the same cable but not with the SGS, then try reinstalling the samsung device drivers.
Oh, and if you want to unlock your phone, the EASY way is to download the Galaxy S Unlock application from the Android market (no affiliation) it's free (but the developer does accept donations) and it WORKS. I won't bore you with my 3 week journey trying to unlock my Bell SGS phone here in Canada, had I found this app first I would have done it in less then 2 min saved myself a LOT of frustration.
Good luck
Yet another instance of "USB Device not recognized" with the Note 3.
To save both you and me some time, I've tried every possible solution online. Tried reinstalling drivers, with Kies, without Kies, with universal android drivers, with toolkits, with anything. At some point, while having nothing else but Wondershare MobileGO for Android installed, it found it properly. But next time I connected, nothing. The phone doesn't give any sign of being connected to a pc other than charging (so goodbye "pull down the menu and change between mtp/ptp" solutions) and the pc simply says that the device has malfunctioned and cannot be recognized. I've tried 4 different pcs with ~6 ports each, no luck. I randomly tried on my gf's father's laptop, perfect connection, recognition, immediate installation of Samsung's drivers. So it's not Note's problem, it's my pc's. But the only thing the 4 pc's in my house have in common is Kaspersky, which i tried disabling and completely exiting between my tries.
Please help me, I've lost my sleep and my patience...
Looks like a bad usb connector on the phone after all. The phone is at a Samsung service point.
I am currently having a problem with my Oneplus Device so that when I plug it in, I get a "USB Device not recognized" notification, then the device defaults to charging mode. All I am trying to do is connect my computer to my phone's hotspot, but this error is getting in my way. I had this problem a while back, but it fixed itself when I was playing around with the USB devices on my computer, and disabling them. Since the problem has returned I have not been able to replicate the fix. Through experimentation, I have been able to somewhat find the problem. By enabling USB debugging and playing around with the USB Configuration settings, I have found that my computer only shows the error on all of the options except Charging and Audio Source. As soon as I change the mode to MTP or PTP or even MIDI, I get an error. I have tried disabling, removing, uninstalling my USB devices. I have tried multiple configurations of restarting, and trying to update the drivers of the device, and nothing seems to work. Oh, and I have tried three different cables, two of which have worked in the past but the error still remains. I don't have any other computers to test this on, but I am pretty sure it is a problem with the computer, not the device.

Here's a couple of things to try:
https://www.androidrecovery.com/blog/how-to-install-usb-driver-for-android-on-computer.html
https://developer.android.com/studio/run/win-usb
EDIT - solved! I've never noticed that apparently some cheap micro usb cables will not work for adb data connections though they work with other devices such as external drives just fine. Grabbed a 3rd cable out of desperation and it hooked right up. What are the odds? Learn something new every day.
Either I'm being thick or this is just fubared - I have a non-rooted Asus z380m running Android 7.0 firmware ww_v5.3.20_20180809. I cannot for the life of me get it to connect to any of my pc's in order to enable write secure settings for something I'm trying with Tasker (turn gps off requires security?). I've Googled forever, tried every usb driver I can locate (including unsigned installs), ensured that Developer mode, USB debugging and USB config on device is set to MTP protocol. NOTHING seems to enable usb connection to pc. The only way I've been able to get files on & off device is through Asus file manager utility that provides web interface (which sucks).
I also tried a Win7 laptop with the "latest_usb_driver" package and no joy there either.
I'm not the most savvy Android guy around, but doing IT for many years I have more than the average clue. Except here apparently.
Any insights would be _greatly_ appreciated.
