As I understand it if you upgrade firmware with higher bootloader version number you can not down grade to a lower boot loader version. Does not matter if done with Odin or ota.

I flashed the stock UK NF4 rom and then tried flashing the Australian NE3 rom over it but it won't go past the Samsung logo after flashing it.
Nope

My understanding was that you could flash and kk over each other but not downgrade to jellybean.

NF can't be downgraded to NE. AFAIK.
Once the letter upgraded u can't gi back to previous letter series. It will be considered downgraded.
The bootloader is different, and it is the ome which lock the downgrading process.

When did Samsung start doing this? When I had my s3 I was able to downgrade to any version but now I can't even downgrade at all. This is really frustrating. Now I'm stuck on a firmware that cripples my GPS.

samsung started this stuff when they started to use KNOX.
They agressively update the bootloader for any patches useful to protect their system evironment. Therefore, in KK, AFAIK, any changes of the firmware letter, means new bootloader.
what most of users do normally (if they have a rooted device), is just flash a newer custom ROM, and stay with their old bootloader (KK). By doing this way, you still can jump any older custom ROM base without any problem.
But once you flash a new original firmware, it will flash the new bootloader as well. And it is non-downgradable.
cheers.
So I have an S5 for ATT factory unlocked but its the stock ship version of ANG3 (Android 4.4.2). How on Earth do I update this? I'm not on the ATT network, so I cant get OTA's, and Samsung Kies thinks this badly outdated version is up to date. I'm not sure the order of the updates so I have no clue what order to flash in, or if its safe with a factory unlocked version, nor know any stock images I can Odin my way up to 5.0 with which ATT S5s are currently on.
HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED.

This is where you want to look http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-galaxy-s5/general
Theres a thread there with the ota file that you can load in stock recovery, or if you want to have root theres a thread for that too.

I only see stuff about downgrade to NCE. What am I suppose to upgrade grade to after my current version??? I doubt you're able to skip through updates.

I have succesfully managed to downgrade to 4.4.4 from 6.0.1 latest dpd4 firmware in n910g.so for n910g bootloader is not locked at all.
Sent from my SM-N910G using Tapatalk
What 4.4.4 firmware did you flash? What steps did you make to go back to 4.4.4?
Please give us more detail.
i was first on 910godd1dpb5_INU 6.0.1 i factory reset it.wiping all data.then i moved to n910gTEl1COL3_TEL 5.1..1 australian version juct to check some people were saying that this firmware has good battery life.then again factoy reset all moved to n910g0lb1ank3_SIN 4.4.4 singapore version. and here i am. thats it.
thanks for sharing you're trial
not working on N910 C 6.0.1 N910CXXU2DPCB still locked bootloader may be next update will be with unlocked one
Weird that INU never received 5.1.1, may be this is the reason? http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-N910g/inu/
For those who want to go back to Kitkat for whatever reasons, one can go back to 4.4.4 from 6.0.1.
Did the following steps:
1. From 6.0.1 DPD4, flashed 5.1.1 COL3 via Odin 3.10.7 with options Nand Erase All and Update Bootloader ticked.
2. After flashing, successfully booted to 5.1.1 after wiping data/factory reset thru Recovery.
3. From 5.1.1 COL3, flashed 4.4.4 ANK3 via Odin 3.10.7 with options Nand Erase All and Update Bootloader ticked.
4. After flashing, successfully booted to 4.4.4 after wiping data/factory reset thru Recovery.
It may even be possible to downgrade directly to 4.4.4 from 6.0.1, but I didn't try it.

Who said it's locked? LEL! Idiots like hard rock/ rakesh roshan doesn't count.
910g has never been locked fyi. It's mainly the exynos variants 910c and 910h
N910T is locked to Latest DOK2 BL... we dont have MM yet but would it be possible for the MM BL to be unlocked and downgradable? I guess what I mean is if MM BL was unlocked could we downgrade past 5.1.1 to 4.4.4....or only down to 5.1.1 where the previous lock was....I was just curious if a upgrade completely rewrites the BL and could possibly fix the lock problem.

Yes possibly because when i was still in later versions of 5.1.1 i can't downgrade to a lower version, it always fails. But upon upgrading to MM, i successfully downgraded to KK.

It's a shame that you first will be mislead and then you have to waste your own precious time to find out the truth.
Like I mentioned before, the cancer started in the Note 4 Telegram group, where that locked BL crap was first mentioned by that troll, then eventually it was spread here. Doesn't matter where you plant the seed of cancer it'll eventually creep in everywhere, but glad it didn't stay long.
F***ing stupid people living pathetic lives.

i can't tick "Phone bootloader update" in odin
My wife has the launch Verizon Samsung Galaxy S5 and I rooted it immediately after we got it and have not updated it since release. She is ready to upgrade and I'm trying to determine the best route to accomplish the upgrade to the latest version. Any recommendations would be appreciated. I've used ODIN in the past, but can I just use ODIN and load the latest 6.0.1 firmware?
Yes, backup your data and use odin to upgrade..
And a factory reset is highly recommended after upgrade
Verizon (and AT&T) run their devices with locked bootloaders. With the release of Lollipop came enhanced bootloader security which makes rooting very difficult, if not damn near impossible. So yes, you *can* easily upgrade, but subsequent rooting may well be an issue.

Can I unlock the bootloader and still flash the latest stock ROM with ODIN and keep the unlocked bootloader?
I would recommend you to install smart switch on your pc and update your phone with it. It is much simpler than using odin. You just plug in your phone and smart switch does the rest

I'm currently running bootloader version 5 on Android Oreo. There is a rooted rom that I would like to install but it runs blv3. Is it possible for me to downgrade my bootloader using Odin? The G955U bootloader is locked as far as I understand.
