I'm picking up a 1 yr old Nexus S. What are the things I should look for - other than obvious physical damage?
And the model I'll get is i9023 - does that model have any problems wrt custom ROM support etc? Or do all ROMs work for both i9020a/t and i9023?
Former Galaxy S2 owner here, so please let me know your Nexus S-specific tips, and fav ROM+kernel combo (prioritizing good battery life).
Also, any slim extended battery(not the ones with bulky extra rear plate) you recommend?

Every ROM I've tried has given me pretty much the same exact screen on time if I really use the phone heavily( almost 4 hours on a good day). This phone doesn't have phenomenal life compared to other phones I've had, but I can make it through a normal work day. No one ROM fits everybody and you're honestly better off searching and experimenting(the joys of having a Nexus device!).
If you're looking for just a stock ROM with a few tweaks here and there, Bugless Beast may be what you're looking for, or Crossbones IIRC. Customizations, which is what Android is all about, you may be better looking at Cyanogenmod, AOKP, Codename Android(CNA), and a crap ton of others.

As for the phone's problems, eh, I had an issue with my microphone. Not sure what was exactly wrong with it. I think the noise screen was messing something up or it was dirty. I ended up opening my phone and cleaning the piece. That was the only problem with mine(got it secondhand too). These phones also have an issue with their power buttons, so make sure that's good before you commit, although there are fixes on here for that. Make sure the phone is legit and not stolen I guess. lol.

Anyway the guy I'm getting it from works at a Samsung office itself, so I guess it is not quite as risky as the usual stranger-in-an-ally thing...

I guess if you were to try to activate it, it would let the person at the desk know. I forgot to add, kernels and governors will effect the battery life along with screen brightness(duh). I prefer ondemand over anything else.
Will experiment kernels, governor etc, I was changing ROMs daily until I found a good combo when I had the S2.
What were you saying about the 'desk'? This is an unlocked phone, so I'm not sure if even activation is required (didn't have any on my previous unlocked phones).
Oh, and any specific brand of extended batteries (specifically those with same dimensions as the original) you'd recommend?
See if don´t have any problems of lost IMEI...
Make sure the power button is in good shape, nice and clicky. These things are notorious for power button failures, and let me tell you it sucks

How do I check if the phone is stolen, any website to look up IMEI? I'll check if IMEI in settings and on the box matches.

Cyanogenmod
MIUI (http://www.miuiandroid.com) > they have multi language

But I found all ICS ROMs having a certain issue with the Nexus S with my messaging application crashing. That's why I went with MIUI. It was the only ICS based ROM not crashing.
The best kernel is Air Kernel for Nexus S. The rest is significantly slower. With stock ICS you won't notice much difference. But with resource-heavy MIUI it's plain noticeable
It's possible the bug I mentioned is fixed in latest ICS releases. I haven't looked.

Thanks for the detailed reply, I understood as much about custom ROMs in my time on Galaxy S2.
I'll be trying Boot to Gecko first, just for the heck of it, then MIUI, bugless beast, CNA and CM9 in that order.
Thought of trying Matr1x, Trinity etc. but will add Air to the list of kernels.
Got the Nexus S 12 hrs ago, power button is fine so I remapped power off to search key and made volume buttons awake it.
Tried Bugless beast, slimICS, CM9 and settled on the latter. Have to try out Boot to Gecko, Jelly Bean and MIUI v4 when I get time later this weekend.
Still don't have an slim extended battery, but I'm happy with the battery life so far that I'm having second thoughts on buying one.

Yep that's the reason why I moved to Nexus S (after getting frustrated about lack of stable ICS ROMs on S2 back in the day)...
Basically reiterating what everyone else has said. I also got my Nexus S 2nd hand and I've had it for about 6 months now (coming from a nexus one) and I love it, other than I miss the trackball (I know I'm strange) for waking and LED purposes. Power button being clicky is a must. Obvious scratch marks, etc.
I've played around with many ROMS in my 6 months with my Nexus S. (Codename, Bugless, AOKP, CM9) After trying CM9 RC1 just recently for about 2-3 weeks, I finally just gave in and came back to AOKP (now build 40) and am loving it right now. AOKP just has really nice style, especially with this mod/theme. (thanks mixtapes)
Kernels: I love Voodoo sound/color, it really makes the phone both look beautiful and sound amazing, especially if you have good headphones/speakers. BLN (Back Light Notification) is a must for me as well in a kernel. I really like matr1x right now, tried air kernel few builds back and it was also nice.

Make sure the GPS works. I bought a second hand one and the GPS was faulty.
I love my N7...but sadly i noticed a very slight screen lift and screen flicker at lower than 30% brightness...i have a few days left on my buyers remorse return policy at staples...but before i send it back i wanted to try a custom rom or two to see it if remedies the flicker...the screen lift issue is really minor to me......tru enuff the flicker maybe a hardware defect but im optimistic that maybe a custom ROM and kernel maybe my saving grace to keep me from returning this one to possibly receive a new defected one and go down the path of so many users who are on the 5th and 6th replacements....anyway my real problem is theres too many Roms to choose from...lol
I love choice and all but theres a new ROM popping up everyday.... how do the noobs maintain there sanity with an influx of tasty prospects?
I don't have the time and patience to flash each and every one and give them there respected time of a few days to figure out possible bugs and what not... so my question is are there any suggestions for a completely stable build? I know none will be perfect...even stock has hiccups every now and then...just wanna check if one cures my flicker and not get sidetracked by the W.I.P. bugs.....thanx to all who reply and cheers

Not sure that there is a flawless rom!
What I did was to give myself a day and downloaded around 5 roms. Installed each one, put it through its paces, see what little extra's each one had, what following each rom had, how often each rom had been updated, how big each rom was (bloat? i.e Cm10 is around 145mb, CNA is around 125mb) and then made a decision based upon that.
At the moment I am on CNA 3.4.1 which is working a treat. The default kernel outperforms the likes of _motley, franco etc... at the same speed according to the benchmark apps so I am at this time happy to stay with that.
In all fairness, for what I use it, I could have just stayed with the default rom and would have been more than happy with that as I'm not looking to OC anything and end up busting my new toy. I just need something thats convenient to check my emails without having to turn my laptop on. Its personal preference. Have a play and see which one you like the best.

Thanx for the advise. I didn't know there were so many kernels, kinda scary....kinda makes u wish everyone would team up and build a ROM To Rule Them All instead of separate projects with slight differences...but options are good don't get me wrong.
Its kinda funny but I'm really satisfied with stock ROM and kernal as it stands.
back in the G1 days it was almost necessary to flash a custom everything with OC & UV kernels and various system tweaks but the Nexus just seems perfect without all the modifications....OCing just seems like overkill on a quad-core device and zram & swap just sound useless with a gigabyte of ram with the added system optimizations JB has brought android.... the only reason I want to try these Roms are for added UI customizations like tablet mode switch and the varying eye candy also to see if it fixes my brightness fluctuations bcuz I had a Samsung Admire that flickered and dimmed but a new ROM and kernel fixed it...
I wonder if there is a ROM for heavy users...this thing is my nonstop slave...I haven't put it down since I got it and am deprived of sleep...my wife has to pry it from my hands for me to get good rest...but I creeped out of bed and snuck in the bathroom just to write this...its 4am in the morning! I'm addicted...

You may think twice before getting that device right now with everything else in the market.I moved to a G2 because of OPPO's poor software situation and lack luster battery life.Also the price hasn't dropped officially from OPPO.
I did, and still want it. If software is all that's 'wrong' with it then I'm sure they, or some clever ROM maker, will fix it eventually. And for me the price is still well in terms with the amount of hardware I'm getting so ... I'm sticking with the choice.

If you're comfortable with rooting and installing another ROM, there's no reason the crummy Oppo ROM should prevent you from getting it. There are a few ROM's around here that are VERY good, and perform as good if not better than CM and others performed on my Sony Xperia T.
I don't undervolt or tweak anything beyond visuals, and my battery life is good. Disclosure - I am a business user.

yeah maxwen and codefirex are my top recommendations.CM sucks until we get another maintainer.Why because an interim maintainer screwed over fixes the former did work on like robotic voice during calls.
I totally agree. The device itself is very nice. The stock rom just sucks. If you are keen with getting a custom rom then this is a good deal.
Also the price should drop down soon.
Here in Thailand you can get the device already for around 14000 Baht / 350 Euro at the grey market.
It is a dev friendly phone. Absolutely no reason to use stock.

I have it from 2 weeks and my impression is very good. A bit worried what it gonna happen when it drops: it's quite heavy and his shape isn't drop-frielndy... Before I got a Galaxy S-plus and a Galaxy Nexus, both rounded on corners: several drops never a scratch

After 8 mouth the oppo find 5 have only an issue the battery... obviusly with dev Rom.
That thing looks like it has crazyyyy lag.
When you double tapped the screen to wale up, it took almost 2 seconds.
Even when switching between apps it takes long.

Liquidsmooth is liquidsmooth (pun intended), just like CM, Team EOS, PA, and most others. Only rom that bugs me is stock OPPO rom. There are multiple custom kernels but for me personally Team EOS + void custom kernel result in best performace AND battery life with an average of 3.5-4 hours screen on time on a full day. Win/Win for me. That isn't that different from a nexus 4 is it?

I am gearing up to get a Nexus 4 in a couple of weeks following its price drop, and I think I'd like to install a custom ROM (and maybe a custom kernel) as I like the idea of improved performance and having my OS specifically tailored to my phone. It seems like there is a massive number of options available to people who want to customize their Android phone, and I'd really appreciate some advice as to where I should start looking.
I have read up a bit on prominent ROM's like CM, PA, SlimBean, MIUI, etc, but user experiences tend to vary pretty widely. Basically, I am all for minimalism, stability, and trying to get my battery to last as long as possible. I'm really just looking for an elegant, intuitive ROM that is fast and efficient and doesn't need too much running on the back end to do what it needs to do. I really like PA's Halo notifications, but from what I have read the ROM itself can be a bit buggy and sluggish relative to other ROM's. Is there any way I can integrate Halo notifications into a more lightweight ROM?
Finally, it seems like running custom kernels has the potential to improve performance/battery life/etc, but usage is so user-specific that it's impossible to say which kernel is "best" for such things. If that is the case, is there an easy way of understanding their strengths and weaknesses so I can decide which one is right for me? I'm just a bit lost as of right now .

Personally, I've gone back to stock because of stability and battery life. Best thing is to try them. You can't really brick a Nexus
Be quick to pick one up. They're going out of stock very quickly.

Currently using an HTC One, BUT.. my LG G2 is on it way to me and make a new customer happy
It took me like 1 week to purchase it and well, here it comes.
So before i start the flashparty, i hope it wouldnt be same like on the HTC.., i want to know if you guys are prefer to use CM/KitKat since the stock is 4.2.2 but as it seems its pretty decent (well, cant say much at the moment).
I'm a fan of CM but im not a fan of bugs, so.. i dont know if i should flash a CM/kitkat rom on the LG G2. From what i can see, the knock on/ff feature is on the CM roms (i love that feature lol), but are they stable? I dont care that much about batterylife, because it needs a few cycles to settle in, i know that already
But, im not sure about CM on the LG.

I'm on day 2 off using my new g2. I've no inclination to even root yet . Stock 4.2.2 is just so good on this beast. Just come from an s3 flashing. Omni 4.4 nightlies and tweaking with xposed modules + using custom kernel etc etc. I'm sure I'll get the flashing urge again in time but I'm enjoying all the little lg goodies too much at the moment.

I have a pair coming in a couple of days. One's going to be a replacement for my wife's Note 2, the other will be my backup in case my Note 2 gets killed like hers did. Glad to see that stock works so well. I'll probably end up rooting, but it'll be nice if I can keep stock on there for a while.
...until I end up using mine full time, of course . Then it's back on the Root-go-round :laugh:

Ive had devices as Samsung(Google) Nexus, ASUS Padfone 2, Galaxy S2, S3 and some phone called nokia many years ago.. And all rooted and had some fun except for the nokias..
im casual nerdy user, and ill tried some roms and ill share my own exp... But remember its my exp. and some may not have some of the bugs as ive had.. btw im on D802 G2 and its the best phone ive had since my nexus.. Impossible long battery life, ive had 2 days between charges, and more than 5 hours screen on time..

And last thing.. Buy a cover to protect your screen.. I accidently pushed the phone from my bed and down on a wooden floor facing screen down on floor... And sadly i had to send for repair and are 200$ down cause im to lazy to do the rep myself..
