So im trying to figure out exactly what is causing the overwrite of dun required set to 1 whenever i activate data, turn on hotspot, or restarting the phone. soft boots dont do it. but something happens and it says " Error: dun is exist" and im trying to stop that. activating the hotspot with dun set to 0 causes a query it finds it at 0 dun is exist and sets it to 1. then goes about its day activating the hotspot, which is totally useless. i can see it says what its doing when it overwrites dun back to 1 but i cant figure out how to stop it. and i figure there are people out there with a lot more knowledge that could help me i think ive gotten as far as i can with such little experience. i need help. my brain is bleeding.

Folks,
I am desperate and I need help - I have had a Cingular 8525 for about a month now. Everything was going fine till Christmas day -
exactly a day after my 30 day return period :-(.
The issue is that every time I turn on Wifi, my device finds countless connections (I live in an apartment complex filled with
young professionals). From here, I go nowhere but downhill. If the phone goes to sleep while the WIFI is turned on, it does not wake up
at all. I do the only one thing that remains to be done and that is reset the phone. This time the device boots up however
the WiFi is still turned on and the phone shows a big exclamation where the bars are supposed to be. Then I get an
error "The Operation failed". Even a clear storage does not solve the issue. If I keep the phone turned off for about a day
and go to a location where there are no Wifi networks, everything is fine again.
I got Cingular to send me a Warranty Exchange device and Lo and Behold, I have the same problems with the second phone
too. I spoke with data device support and they asked me to go to a Cingular store where the device works fine as there are
no WiFi networks there.
I cannot return, cannot use my phone to the fullest extent and am in despair. Can someone tell me if there is any miracle that
I can utilize at this time. Please help !!!
p.s. - I have never installed any third party apps on the phones.
Cannot take time to answer this right now but, the answers are alraedy posted on this board. It does not sound as if there is anyting wrong with the phone except the not waking up part which is a known issue and also documented here. Also try the Wiki http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Hermes
I will check in again later

Mike,
Any help is appreciated. None of the topics below cover issues with WiFi. Once I turn on the WiFi, it will not turn off even with a hard reset or soft reset and then the phone shows the exclamation "!" !!!
Well just for starters I'm going to suggest that you DO add two applications - most importantly Magic Button
http://www.trancreative.com/mb.aspx
With this tool installed you will be able to see from the task bar what programmes are running on your device. (You may or may not know that applications that are opened and then shutdown with the X at top right corner are NOT actually closed but running in the background. Magic Button will allow you to see these and close them down - particularly Active Sync which will get in the way of your WiFi connection.
I think you are not getting any wifi connection but you are detecting networks from folks around you?? Does it detect your own network? and if so at what stage do you have a problem.
If your own network is being detected but the usual means of connecting e.g. by entering WEP key is failing then you might want to install an application called Hitchhiker http://www.kasuei.com/hitchhiker/ this application resolves various conflicts and will re-establish IP address and will allow you to enter the WEP key or even copy and paste it in. Once run and connected hopefully, you can close down Hitchhiker (if you want to) and connect to wifi by your normal route (Hitchhiker will have saved the connection information to the standard locations so you don't need to use Hitchhiker each time you want to connect) (Note you must also download and install the .Net Framework a link for which is also given on the Hitchhiker page given above)
Finally (for now) you say Wifi is on all the time even after soft reset. But you can switch it off, in more than one way. Here's one way, below the on/off switch right hand side is another hard key for the "Communications Manager" . On the screen that comes up you will see an aerial with waves radiating from it. Tapping will close and tapping again will re-open. Here you can also open and close the phone function, though I never close mine.
Mike
Okay, I have spent the past few days reading different forums trying to figure out what is wrong with my wifi connection. No one can seem to find the problem. If you are up to the challenge, I would LOVE for anyone else's help.
My problem is as follows,
I got my tmobile MSD just a few days ago. I (being dumb) started messing with the connections before I read how to set them up. Now, whenever I attempt to connect through my WIFI it begins to load, then says this page can not be found. What in the world is wrong with it? I do not have a medi/data plan, so I do not want to use anything that will charge me, hince why I am attempting to use wifi. If anyone can tell me how to get this darn thing to work, I will love it! Thanks so much! have a great day
You are not giving the details needed for people to help you.
If you answer the following you may get a solution:
1) What WiFi network / hotspot are you trying to connect to?
2) Are you sure that network connects to the internet? (Other computers / devices using it?)
3) Are you sure it is not secure?
4) How did you set up your WiFi connection? (Give exact setup parameters)
5) Does the WiFi icon show connected?
6) What URL are you trying to access?
7) Can you access any other site, like google.com?
At the moment there is no way of telling where the problem is.

I agree with levenum... but also you could try this....
go to settings...connections....wifi...menu...remove settings. do a soft reset then.
then whenur ppc is back on again, put the wifi scaner on, find a available accessible network. u must be able to browse again. it has worked 4 me.
worse case-- hard reset
I am trying to connect to my wireless at work (it is not secure) My work computer/laptop can connect.
I have not attempted to do ANYTHING to setup my wifi. I simply turned my wifi on and it picked up the wirless connection. Yes it says it is connected. I have attempted to go to many different URLs, each says the same error message.
If i were to attempt to do a soft/hard reset how do I do that.
If you could not already tell, I am new at this enitre thing.
wiki
please then you must find out by reading the wiki what category does ur ppc fall under. alternatively read th ppc manual or look up on the internet the ppc specifications to find the rest button. usually its a tiny hole where u can insert the tip of the stylus into. that should resEt ur ppc
when i reset it, it will not mess with my SIM card will it

you really are new to this aren't you, don't worry reset does not mess wth the sim card, please don't panic, I had the same prblem as u indeed, and read the WIKI
haha I am! How could you tell lol. THanks for the help!
Before you reset know this:
1) Hard reset will erase all your data and installed programs and restore the phone to factory settings i.e. OS and built in apps only!
Make sure you back it up!
(See manual for button combination, or try Settings->system->Clear storage icon if you have it to preform hard reset)
2) Soft reset (just press with stylus in reset hole) will simply reboot the device.
Neither will help if you didn't manage to connect to WiFi even before messing with your settings.
Also, see if you need to manually enter a gateway or proxy address to connect to to your work network. (This depends on the network settings)
One last thing: when your network is detected and you are asked if it connects to 'The internet' or 'Work' be sure to select 'The internet'.
Thats all I can think of at the moment...
Ok this is starting to annoy me now.
Every time I boot up my phone, it IMMEDIATLY wants to connect. Obviously, since I haven't giving my password in, so no phone service is available yet, it fails.
So every single time I boot my phone I get to see this message (see picture below). The only way to get it gone, is to press Negeren (Ignore).
Is there a solution that doesn't immediatly wants to connect, but waits with connecting when the phone actually has service to connect?
Thanks, Lennart
(Quick translation of the picture: The modem on the other side has disconnected. Tap settings to check the connection settings and change if neccesary)
Same problem here ...
Don't want to irritate you guys by bumping, but really wondering if anyone has a solution for this.
Or even the same problem?
Thanks
I think that the problem is My location, which can't be full disabled.
Each startup My location trying to detect phones location.
For me i have "Select Time Zone" after each startup after connection established
How to fix - don't know
There is a way to disable MyLocation, using BsB...
Hmm, don't want to use an option that requires total disable of another program
.. and still cant get an answer.
Without wifi the device is useless to me.
I can see the networks, just not connect to anything.
I have the latest radio.
It worked on first setup but after restart ive lost the ability to connect.
Somoene mentioned that the MAC address is assigned randomly each time the device restarts which seems very odd.
Does anyone know of a fix for this before I give up and go back to 6.5?
This forum is becoming incredibly difficult to find information!
Same thing hapened to me...after unlocking, modifying registry and activating the phone, wi-fi stopped working. It sees the network...very good signal, but it says that it can't reach it...I tried a few restarts, but nothing. Hope somebody will fix this....thanks in advance
Will I be able to use the same activation key again if I reset the phone from settings/about ? I mean....I could try this to see if the the unlocking or the registry modification caused this...
This happened to me, too. It started working after I pulled the battery and went through the new phone setup thing.

turn off the device, take off your micro sd and turn on the device. you'll see that all your settings and customizations are gone. turn off the device again, put back your sd card and turn on the device. NOW you should be able to connect to wifi access points!
yeah I know, it sounds weird but it worked for me..
Hi there, before now some people were having issues with the hotspot workarounds, where they could enable the hotspot but attached devices received no actual internet. I didn't do any polling but it seemed to be mostly a Sprint phenomenon, as after doing the magic hotspot trick most other people had no issues.
I just tested it, and the new root will get you functioning hotspot on Sprint, and possibly for other people too who were having the same problem. I ran the following code while the hotspot happened to be off, and after turning it back on I was able to get internet through it on other devices. If you try this with the hotspot already enabled please report back so we know if it needs to be either particular setting. Use a normal command line where you have adb.exe and run this command while the phone is on and no further action should be needed once you turn on the hotspot.
Code:
adb shell content insert --uri content://settings/system --bind name:s:tether_dun_required --bind value:i:0
Just having root itself has not enabled the normal hotspot switch locations, like in the notification drawer or in the tethering settings, and I still had to use the network refresh trick to get them to work. This may need another command to insert/change the correct protection setting, or something else entirely.
I also went back to the APN settings through the shortcut maker and received the same error I had before, about this user not being able to access them.
On a related note, I saw some people mention that their hotspot would automagically turn off after 10-20 minutes, so I'll post this now and keep an eye on whether it does so here, as I never watched before.

This didn't work for me. Any other ideas. Says hotspot service not provided? I can't even switch it on?
An easier command to type that does the same thing is:
Code:
adb shell settings put global tether_dun_required 0
