Black Screen of Death - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all. I just bought a Note 3 off of eBay and was told that the phone works but the screen is black. When it turns on, you can hear the sounds, you just can't see anything. The seller said the screen is in new condition and has had a hard screen protector from day 1 so I'm guessing that the screen is not broke. What should I do? Is there a fix for this?
Thanks for your time and effort![emoji85] [emoji85] [emoji85] [emoji85] [emoji111]

Return it as soon as possible for a full refund.
It will be difficult to fix the problem without having a working Note 3 to swap parts.

U got jipped

Galaxy Note Screen died off in less than 24 hrs after purchase

Hi all.. I'm from singapore.. I just got my galaxy note less than 12 hrs ago.. And I off the note to do a full cycle charge.. To my surprise.. When woke up.. There's no display.. In the Dark I could see some dots and lines.. The note still able to power up.. As I tried calling my note.. It's did ring.. Just no display... What should I do? Send back to service center to ask for a 1 to 1 exchange or back to the reseller for 1 to 1 exchange?

If I were you I would exchange (swap) it 1:1 where you bought it! And I would check the display of the new device in the store. There are quite BIG manufacturing differences in screen quality!

i meant a different thing:
the quality of the screens differ a lot from one unit to another! some have a heavy tint (blue, green, red), which is especially annoying when this effect is one one side of the screen stronger then on the other. then, almost all screens have a miscalibrated gamma!
so if you have the ability compare a few devices, and take the one with the "best" screen!
look for
.) tint
.) unevenness
as these errors are the most worse ones!
there are a few threads regarding display quality, if you are further interested!
btw.: greetings to singapore!
stayed there a few times and enjoyed it much!
especially last time @ MBS was brilliant
and, for me as an european, lunch @ blue diamond
in little india is also always worth the visit!
also take a look here, seems another display died...

I would recommend that you go back to the shop that you bought it. Better to do it fast before they make you go all the way to Samsung service center. My Note has been serving me well throughout the 20 days that it has been in my possession. Urs should be an isolated incident that happened to have a case of "bad screen".
Do we really need threads like these?
If you bought a new car and the next day it didn't start, and the electric windows.kept going up and down, would you:
a) Call up the dealer for restitution
b) Log into an online forum with no links to the dealer/manufacturer and ask what to do.
Take it back for repair or refund - it's obvious!
Now, if you've had the phone a few months and have rooted/modded it, here's the place to ask!
Regards,
Dave

had a similar kind of problem when i bought it with some horizontal banding.... so i took it to the place i bought and exchanged it for a new one.... (my phone was partially rooted- I mean i removed the plugged while process of rooting when i noticed this issue.. the dealer didnt even look at it and gave me a new replacement)
I have this issue before, but it was because of flashing wrong rom in a wrong way... or boot splash... i forget but i remember to have this, but after flashing rom, it will be ok,
I'd recommend you exchange it asap at the store you for it from. If it has only been a day or two you could probably just get it exchanged for another. Don't waste your time with Samsung in the beginning. It'll take weeks or days at least to get your old note back. But maybe by going to the store you can get a brand new one within a few minutes.

Ordering a replacement for a cracked screen?

I just cracked my phone and i haven't even had it for 2 weeks. The phone isn't even responding anymore only the left side of the screen is responsive. Has anybody else tried to send their cracked screen in and not get charged?

So you want to extort money from LG?
It costs around 140 to fix through LG repair centers...
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Do the lg repair as it is cheaper than buying a screen kit... 140 vs 220 is a no brainer. Just make sure they actually do everything right. They didn't even replace my screen (granted it wasn't cracked) and they forgot to put the torx screws back in as well. I had to get a supervisor on the phone to fix the situation. They were at least able to fix the situation by sending me the two screws, but its been about a week on a 9 day wait for the stuff to arrive.

Touchscreen dead strip!

I've noticed just today that there's a dead strip on the touch screen. It didn't do this yesterday. The Nexus 4 was dropped once from 2 feet high, but that was almost a month ago and everything worked fine until now.
The screen still looks beautiful, no dead pixels, no cracks, and the phone is in a protective case with a screen protector.
It seems to me that the digitiser crapped out, but I'm not sure why it happened so randomly.
A funny thing though is that when I drag something fast across the strip it works. And sometimes it'll recognise a touch as a long touch or two-fingered touch along the strip. Weird.
I attached a few touch test photos to show the issue.
Hopefully there's a fix. Has anyone else had this problem? And if you had to send it back to Google, was something like this covered under warranty? What should I do?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
You can try to replace the screen yourself or tell LG/Google to send a replacement via RMA. They have parts floating around Ebay
How risky/costly is it to replace it myself? And does anyone know if it's covered under warranty? Cause if is, it'll be cheaper just to get a replacement from Google.
Are there other ways to check if it is indeed the digitiser? I've seen that sometimes touch screen problems are software related. And if that's the case, it'll be easy to fix.

And .... Out of curiosity, what does cause a digitiser to fail without the screen actually breaking?

Depends. If you follow the instruction properly, it works well. If you screw up, then Google/LG wont be able to help. A lot of people have done it and succeeded. There are great articles on the web. The price of a digitizer would be about $50-70. I MAY BE WRONG WITH THE PRICING.

In most cases no. Because it worked well and suddenly stopped working. Thus Google would say that its your fault. If you are somehow able to convince the Reps that it wasn't your fault, then there is some hope. I

One way is to remove it and put it to a tester or another motherboard and see if it works. But that takes a lot of time and money,

Anything. The phone might have overheaten to the point that it flashed a certain section of a digitizer. It may also be a battery problem that escalated. If you feel that it's software problem, flash a ROM a see if it works.
IMHO You should send it to LG and get it fixed for about $140~.
This problem should be covered under warranty. If you honestly haven't done anything to cause this damage. (I'm also clueless as to what a user could do themselves to make just one section of the digitizer stop working)
Then lasting 5 months or less would not be considered reasonable and you should be entitled to a replacement.
Remember it is down to the retailer to prove that you caused any damage.
And if you honestly did nothing and it just crapped out on you then you should have nothing to fear in sending it back for a warranty replacement

That happen to my iphone when it got water damage. But if you did not do anything wrong, it should be covered by warranty.
Ditto

I did an RMA explaining everything like I said above. I got my Nexus 4 replaced by Google, and they didn't charge me anything. New Nexus 4 works fine with no issues - I've been using it since May.

Same bug here in Italy where I'm living now even if the the phone was bought last year on UK Play store. Problem is Google rep wrote me RMA can take place only in UK or any other county where N4 was originally available on Play store i.e. NOT Italy.
Does anybody know of a workaround to get the RMA here?
Thanks

Yeah, I think the overheating might have been what happened to mine. I was using a blackberry charger and I think it might have overheated my battery and fried a strip of my digitizer.
Even i have got the same problem, i dont know who bumped this old thread, but please guide me to for a low cost workaround for my situation
No drop or glass break.. Dead pixel just one..
Hi,
Anybody found the reason for the issue, i too got the same issue; a dead strip exactly in the middle of the screen, My warranty is over already, so anyone has work around for this??

This looks like a dead thread, but Ill take a punt. I dusted my old Nexus 4 off the other day, which had exactly the same issue with the dead strip on the digitiser. I had tried replacing the screen and digitiser (I have up trying to get the original screen off the original digitiser). The issue remained, so I tried a full factory reset, but that also didn't work. I am now wondering if I should get a cheap motherboard, or try flashing the stock ROM again. Has anyone else had any luck with either?

[Q] White line on the edges of Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 screen

Hello,
So I have just bought a brand new Galaxy Tab 4 7.0 and noticed that two edges of the screen show a white line when I tilt my tablet a little upwards/downwards. It goes bright when the screen brightness is set to 100%. Although everything looks perfect when holding the tablet in a normal position.
Is it normal? I have attached the pictures as well.
Best Regards,
No man, that is not normal.. I have the same piece of crap device and it hasn't anything like that.. You better go and return it, use the warranty...
i dont have either those white lines, your screen must be broken, if you didnt break it then use warrantly to get it fixed or changed to Other tab 4 7.0.

Hi,
It's a brand new tablet so I believe screen isn't broken. Bought it yesterday. I guess I will have to get it exchanged then just to be on the safe side. Does your tablet look good when you tilt it upwards/backwards?

Its a common problem. Its some sort of bleeding or what ever you call it. The screen isnt broken, i think Its "defective" simpky because when you tilt your tablet that way, Its not supposed to be white like that. Its supposed to be the same color as when you look at it directly. If I recall a few nexus tablets had a similar problem.

Home button issue

Hi
I have my s7 edge for 3 weeks now, and I started to notice that when I press the edges of the home button it sometimes won't register a click.
What I do is just press an edge of the button with my fingernail with low amount of pressure to create this issue.
I can't return it because it's been too long, and I'm afraid to use my warrenty because I'm afraid it won't remain water proof...
What would you do?
I have same thing. It's waterproof. Don't worry about it.

No. This is absolutely not normal. My old device had the issue and I made a video of it and exchanged it. My new one doesn't have the issue.

Mine doesn't have that issue. The "edges" react the same as the middle of the button.

Had this too.... It drove me nuts...its a button shouldn't have to think about pressing it in the middle everytime.... If your still in your grace return period I would exchange it....
I thought I could live with mine but after 2 days I had to return it.... Replacement was perfect...
Edit* Oops noticed you've had it for 3 weeks.... Most companies give you only 14 days...... Guess you may have to just live with it........Is your fingerprint sensor working good?.... The biggest problem I had was I always hold my phone in my left hand then use my thumb to press the home button.... But hitting it on the left part of the button worked 1 out of 5 times.... You'll just have to get used to pressing in the middle

I have the exact same issue with mine, strangely it only became more apparent after about 3 weeks of owning it, meaning I would have to send my device off for repair now; I've decided to live with the issue for now and see how it goes. Personally I don't think they will say anything.... Samsung quality control has always been a little shady.... Actually this was the first Samsung phone I didn't have to take back since the S2.... But after a couple of days I realized people could barley hear me cause my microphone was I supposed to and out.... Got replacement and everything was perfect ? except the damn home button!.... So one more return later and now I have a perfect screen and a buttons work great
....... I'm really picky and OCD about phones when I get them.... I took my S6 back twice also.... Had a home button rattle and also dust under the screen...... If you ever get sick of it... I use button Savior app.... It replaces all your hardware buttons but you can gesture it or put an onscreen trigger to open it..... I like it better than other onscreen buttons because its always hidden until you need it

Mine does the same thing even when I pressed in the middle. I had to click twice since it didn't register the first one. Happened about 5 times but since I received an update from Tmobile, it doesn't happen anymore, or yet... Hopefully it'll stay that way.

When i realized i have an issue it was already 2 days passed the 14 days so...
When i approached a samsung rep he told me that this is how the button works, and that i can send it to the lab but its going to take a few days so i passed..

This is something a certified repair center can easily handle without losing the waterproofing. Certified centers have been trained to fix these models, and they have all the tools to do so, while uncertified repair centers won't necessarily have the training, and they won't have the official tools, so they can't guarantee that the waterproofing is still intact after a repair. If an official Samsung rep told you it could be fixed or whatever, then I'm sure it should be fine. You have warranty, and it should be used for things like this.
If you send it in, you'll probably sit where you are now in a week or so with a fully functioning device, or you can just ignore it and still sit where you sit now in a week with a defect device. I would do it.

I would send it in too..... But sometimes it can take 6 weeks... I had to send an S4 in once and it came back almost 2 months later.... If it's something you can't live with send it back..... But you should have a 1 year warranty if anything actually goes wrong with it...... It is a pretty widespread issue in the Galaxy S7 edge line hopefully they get it fixed in later batches.... But if it were me I would probably deal with it rather than send my brand new phone out... Unless they can guarantee you a return date
