Just setting up phone and with nothing on yet, when I connect to my laptop it says I have 100gig to use, can it be that 28 gig is being used by the system?? surely not...
2 things to remember:
A) Formatting
B) PH-1, just like Pixel devices, uses an A/B partition scheme. Which has the benefit of online updates, but the con of eating much more space.

I just reverted back to Nougat because of performance issues on Oreo 8.1 beta. I have installed apps and music and not much else and this is what I have for system usage 15.9GB.
I also wouldn't believe what Winblows says for storage, it's hardly ever right. And I do agree with Skripa, A/B partitions will limit the amount of usable storage. How much stuff do put on your phone anyway?

I noticed this too. After installing 8.1 B1 system is taking up 22GB! That's a ton. Does anyone know how much space System takes up on a device that hasn't but updated to Oreo? I just checked a Pixel XL...it uses 7.4GB for System on 8.1.

You have A/B partitioning... Meaning you have 2 copies of the OS on system... One A... And one B... With corresponding boot.img...
True. But I believe that's what the Pixel does as well.

And... Stone cold guess... Pixel takes the other slot... And ignores it... Since that's the phone the system was designed on...
You realize that once the partition is labeled system... You don't get the space back... It will always be system... Even if unused...
Unless you do the big no-no and try to change the partition table
My 8.1 shows up at 21GB.
I see post like the OP for every device.

and here it is!
it uses that 100ish for the fast boot feature i would imagine so anyway.
so on shut down it stores the os in the ram this way only a small amount of power is needed to keep it stored, removing the battery clears this ram area forcing a normal boot.
this is similar to how a pc does stand by. so really id imagine that the os and main launcher is probably always loaded in this invisible bit of ram, a custom rom without fast boot would probably show all of it.
Says I have only 623mbs :s

Are those 100ish mb permanent reserved for the fastboot feature, or will they be released if i uncheck fastboot in phone and remove battery and put it back in again and boot up, will i have all my 768mb then ?

no idea uncheck it and see, im still waiting for my DHD to ship from handtec so it was purly speculation however it seems logical that this is what it is used for.
disable it reboot then check ram usage.
@noobdeagle I didnt think about fastboot you'r prolly right.
I would try it but with the latest patch to visionary restarting the phone will play havok with the overclock.
If anyone else could try this i would be greatfull.
Well, i did remove the silicon case and power off the phone, removed the battery and inserted it again and started up the phone..... hmm, it's still 638xxx total using os monitor So there is no easy way to get hold of all the 768mb. My guess is also that those missing mb is dedicated for the fastboot.
Does the 'missing' 100MB matter?

Short answer: No. The total amount it has is reduced by the OS. That's the bottom line. It would be nice if manufactures gave the actual usable amount instead of total. Same with storage. They say 1.5 GB, but even before I add anything, it says only 1.1 GB because of the stuff they put there first. Anyway I'm using Mini Info, and after all my apps I need they are only using 241 MB out of the 638 MB available, so I'm good.
Ok, the system take some from the 638, but i guess its not the mainprogram and that the 100+ mb is reserved for the main program and fastboot, anyways it isnt available to anything else, and really the phone works fine as it is... but as with pc more is better
They should tell us what space we have on the phone AFTER the main program and basics programs from manufacturer is installed, not the ammount there is on a totally clean phone, that info is pretty useless to the consumer.
In short as said before, it does not matter and this phone has more memory to use then any other on the market, so nothing to reflect on if you ask me.
So I am cleaning up my phone when I notice I have these two folders that are identical.
Main question is, which one is safe to delete without making my phone go crazy?

Definitely not. Leave it alone; everyone has those folders and I assure you they do not exist twice.
What makes me scratch my head is that both folders are the exact same size with the same content so I just don't understand why my phone needs double since it shows my storage at 17GB and want to free up some more space
One is a link to the other. They are not duplicated, they are one and the same files

Alright, think about it this way. Open your file explorer and check the size of either of the folders by looking at their properties. For instance, mine both show that they add up to 10GB. I've also got about 3-4GB of space being used for backups and my system partition, and even more for apps. So my guess? Probably using at least 20GB of my storage. Keep in mind that I have a 32GB phone. Now if I go to settings > storage, it shows that I have 12GB of free space, so it all adds up. If you do the math, I couldn't possibly be using 20GB total for both of those folders, so they have to just be different paths to the same location, and yours probably is, too.
My conclusion: if you delete one of those folders, nothing good can come of it. Look elsewhere and account for your system itself (I see you are using the stock firmware, which is quite large due to LG bloatware) and the apps you use. Check Settings > Storage and see what's using so much space.
Thanks for confirming everyone. I guess I need to browse my phone system with my PC to find where the real bloat is at. Yes the LG apps do take up a bit of space.

You might consider finding an AOSP ROM that fits your needs if you're looking for a bit more space. They tend to be a lot smaller than stock roms. Also, try clearing your cache.

It seems that Encryption has got a big performance boost in 5.1.
I ran Androbench on my stock Nexus 6 running LMY47M.
My results using stock androbench settings.
Sequential Read|Write
161.53 MB/s | 74.75 MB/s
Random Read
20.0 MB/s, 5187.28 IOPS (4KB)
Random Write
7.98 MB/s, 2052.08 IOPS (4KB)
These numbers are actually higher than the unencrypted numbers AndroidPolice and Antutu reported back when the Nexus 6 first came out.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/1...us-6-encrypted-vs-unencrypted-its-not-pretty/
Yeah I'm not even gonna mess with unencrypting mine. It's as fast as me already. I don't care about benchmark numbers.

Same here. I had to enable a pattern to be able to access exchange server. There are exchange security bypass hacks out there you can load to remove that dependency (was for the Note 3 anyways) but I'm gonna leave it be.
I'd like to see someone check how the CPU is hit during heavy I/O now.
Remember that it could be pegging the CPU in order to keep the data transfer fast, which would have an impact on CPU intense applications and battery life. Real world use includes I/O *simultaneous* with CPU. Benchmarks only test them separately.
This is good to see. Once 5.1 or whatever settles in, I'm going back to encrypted and locked down

I can't take that decision for you. I don't really care about encryption. If they steal my phone, and don't know my password they only can get data off my sd card. Which I don't really bother.. What bothers to me is how the phone feels. And I decrypted it on android 5.0.1 And the phone did feel allot faster. On 5.1 decrypted the phone feels just as fast, I haven't used 5.1 encrypted, so I can't tell the differnce on 5.1. But I think the phone wil feel faster decrypted. So you could give it a try.

I was in the decrypted camp on 5.0... Didn't bother on 5.1 and honestly it's fast. No lag or stutters
My N6 still sucks opening apps. I'm so tired of this phone feeling slow. I still have my N5 because I'm procrastinating selling it but its running stock 5.0.1 and all the apps open instantly. I tested it against my decrypted N6 running 5.1, and my N6 is way behind.. Androbench says my sequential read speed is 187.72MB/s. Now if I reboot my phone it'll probably clear some apps from memory and do better idk I'll go try but either way sometimes it does better after a reboot, but it is nowhere near as fast as loading apps on my N5 and that bothers me so bad..
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
---------- Post added at 04:08 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:58 PM ----------
OK after reboot its sequential read is at 192.84MB/s. Its performing a little better but this wears off for me. I can't keep rebooting my phone to get a little speed increase. Is that a bad result? Should my phone do better being decrypted? I can't stand it.

Encryption and root are independent of each other. You can do either, or both in any combination.

Any new phone will still use encryption and if Goog doesn't want to shell out the fees to Qualcomm it is still going to be software like it is now. Maybe a newer proc would be better at handling it though? Not sure.

After the OOS v4.5.8 OTA I have such little space (110Mg in /system) that V4ARISE doesn't have enough room to flash its core and just Viper4Android anymore. I'm currently looking for an easy, long term, solution as Viper4Android alone is actually ~5Mg but V4ARISE comes with too much overhead I will never use or want. Deleting /system bloat wear is a pain after each OTA so I'll seek a simple 1 or 2 flash file solution with the minimum of overhead and bother. I'm still sticking with OOS rather than a custom ROM as they usually interface with all the hardware better than custom solutions and OOS is already feature rich and dam responsive.
I tried to use some micro sd cards I haven't used for a while, but when I switch my micro SD as internal storage the OS says: the speed is too low and my phone would become pretty slow. Before I to find some high speed micro SD card in amazon my question is this:
What's the maximum reading and writing speed the micro SD port in this port can handle?
Which micro SD card model should I buy as internal storage for this phone if the speed supported by the port is beyond 20 mbs/s while reading?
Thanks in advance.
Never use a SD card for running apps.
Use as a data drive only.
Use a V30 rated card from a reliable manufacturer.

Move the DCIM folder to the SD card.
Weed out the trash apps if any.

I'm getting my second new 10+ N975U today.
One reason a searched high and low for a new one was a guarantee it be loaded with Pie not Q!
Twins. Hell yeah. I will see how fast I can load the new one up. Give SmartSwitch a test run.
With the way Android is going downhill with scope storage and bloating, Pie will remain viable for years to come unless you're into gaming perhaps. Older valuable apps that can't run right on Q and above will continue to be usable.
No gross security issues at all... I know as I've ran with this OS on some of the worst websites there are using Brave and Samsung browser. Various adblockers are running.
No malware has made it through in over a year in spite of its "security issues". There have been a over a dozen maybe two of app samplings that were uninstalled with no damaged.
I'm careful with bt and keep wifi disabled... other than that I use it without concern.
At 16 months old it's my longest running OS load ever. It's been heavily used.
Still fast and very stable... no need to reload it yet. That impresses me as well as the fact it continues to fullfill it's mission and remains 100% functional.
Upgrading it would only cause trouble and lots of lost time.
