Critical battery temperature

Hey. Does someone you know, what is the highest (read: critical) battery and HW temperature in this phone? I am a little bit scared when I'm getting even 55*C on battery when I am using it as a navigation connected to charger in a car. I know it's too high because when it's heating over 49*C it stops charging. My question is how dangerous is such high temperature for HW and Battery? Is it normal behavior?
I never had such high temperatures, and I live on a hot country (Brazil). Try to check apps running in background, or, if you are using 3G and charger, it can get really hot. But I think it's normal, since my phone reaches 45ºC while charging, and I don't use 3G.
with 3g my phone gets crazy hot. i once left it on overnight (it didnt go to sleep) and when i woke up it felt dangerously hot, musta been 50deg or something
otherwise, with wifi it just gets warm... still worrying though, considering none of my other portable devices have ever gotten this hot before... just shows where all of the battery life goes to! :S
i dont think its the battery getting hot though, it must be the cell chip. my batt temps are usually pretty low, and the batt itself doesnt seem to get hot. its just the panel above the battery that warms up
My phone got so high temperature (55*C) when I was using navigation. Moreover it was pluged to the car charger (but wasn't charging because of high temperature) and mounted to the window in hot sunny day. And I'd like to know how dangerous is such high temp. for the device.
I wonder if we have dud phones? my battery life sucks ass... bare able on wifi, but **** with 3g
Agree with scott. With prolonged use my battery doesnt heat up, just the panel above the battery (where the camera is)
And my battery life sucks too. Gotta keep it charged in the car for even short (30 min) trips with navigation

Try checking the manual (if there is) for operating temperatures etc.
I'm not exactly sure of how it'll affect the phone but it poses health problems due to higher radiations.
Try preventing this by ensuring all other (running) apps that you don't need are closed by using a task killer and all connectivity stuffs (eg. bluetooth, data sync) ESPECIALLY THE BACKGROUND DATA if you don't need it. Also, if possible try to refrain from covering the back panel (mainly the area near the camera) and allow ventilation to let it cool so it won't overheat.
What else I do is leaving the keyboard opened so there's even more surface area for it to cool.
The problem isn't just about damage, but that you don't want to be holding hot metal.
Yes it sucks but its a price to pay for such high specs packed in such a tiny casing.
My friend who owns Samsung Galaxy II has his phone heating up even more frequently and quickly, so we're not the only ones
Its annoying because we know its avoidable and shouldnt have been allowed in the final design by motorola
I've never seen such high temperatures with my M 2.
Highest was 47ºC while charging and playing a game. It usually sits around 35-36ºC idle, and 40-42º during games.

That's normal guys... Every device dying in a "few minutes" with 3G. And U know what? From my last 3 devices which I have been using to surf in the Internet with 3G (Moto RIZR Z8, Nokia N86, Moto Milestone 2), MM2 lasts the longest.

That's right, but every app just showing the battery temperature
Damn..
Yesterday my milestone 2 became hotter as ever, just above the battery (where the camera is, like newbietown). First I turned it off, but it stayed hot even then. After I removed the battery it became cool again.
But! Now my MS2 is completely dead...
It's really not turning on again, and charging is really weird (irregular flashin led). And my warranty is void because of me installing argen2stone I guess ..
Well, just flash a stock rom and they'll never know...
My phone is not recognized on my computer using USB . Can I still use rsd lite?
First get to bootloader mode: Power + Volume Up (or down) + Camera
If battery is too low you'll need to buy a relacement or a external charger.

Try taking it to warranty. Argen2Stone is so lightly modded, maybe they won't mind it. Anyway, you have nothing to lose now. And this really looks like a HW problem, not SW

Beginning of next week I will hand it in for warranty. I think it has something to do with the power circuit in the phone. Sometime i've used HTC chargers (1A) instead of the motorola charger (0,85A).. That could be the cause Hopefully they cannot see that.
I don't think that's a problem. I always use a Nokia charger, I find the original charger too short, the Nokia has a good lenght. And I never had problems with overheating. Also, 1A is the maximum current that the charger can provide, not the nominal [email protected] anytime

How much did I damage my cpu chip?

A silly thing i"be done was left my PLAY to charge with the window open and the sun beaming on my phone.
When I came back to see it under the sun is picked it up and saw it was up to 65 degrees C'
I obviously took out the battery and cooled it back to 27c under the AC
so how hard did the cpu take damage? The phone didn't reboot automatically though, and atm there is no signs of damage

Maybe nothing? Only time will tell

Was your device still on?? If it was don't worry. The CPU would of shut device down if it reached a dangerous temp

If you said thanks and using a pc, no reason not to press the thanks button this goes to everyone
Don't worry about it if it didn't turn off automatically.i'm sure these new CPUs have built in safety mechanisms that turns it off auto if it reaches a certain temperature.
You would be more scared if it was already turned off.it would mean it overheated and is still heating up under the sun.

It should be fine, any damage would be noticeable right away.
Here I guessed someone had they're cpu pegged at 1.9ghz while having an hd movie marathon

(Almost) burning hot Desire Z

About a dozen times recently I've removed my Desire Z from my pocket and discovered it is turned off and extremely HOT, not burning hot but much much hotter than any phone ever should be. The whole phone and battery is hot. I have to remove and reinsert the battery to restart the phone and the battery level is much depleted over what is normal. I don't think the phone is going to start a fire in my pocket but I rely on this thing to be functioning when it's supposed to, not heating my, umm, privates.
Anyone else experience this? Fortunately it's still under warranty (if I can find the receipt...).
What ROM? Kernel? etc?
Need info to help, if you're stock, then its defective and you should return it of course.
Has this been happening more than once? And like the guy above me said, are you over clocked? If so, have it so it unclocks when the screen is off. But if your not over clocked, maybe try getting a new battery?

The phone is completely stock other than being unlocked so I can use it under Telus. My battery is a Mugen Power 1800 mAh though I am believe that the very first time this happened it had the original battery in it.
It always happens while I'm carrying it in my pocket, that is to say it doesn't happen all the time but when it does it has been in my pocket - that's where I always carry it. Sometimes I feel the heat enough to notice it, but usually I'm checking my phone wondering why I didn't receive an expected call. And then when it restarts from a battery pull I realize I have practically no battery left.
I have an inquiry into HTC about it. I assume I am going to have to find my receipt before they'll be willing to warranty it right? Being without my phone for any length of time is going to be a big problem in itself though.
How long do you keep it in your pocket. I know my phone starts getting warm when I've had it in my pocket for an hour or so. Hence the reason I always keep it on my desk and only have it in my pocket if I'm off somewhere.
Since you aren't overclocking it, I can say I'm 99% sure it's a bad battery or liquid damage. Do any of the batteries have humps or are they completely flat? Has the phone been exposed to any liquid at all?
If your rooted use setcpu to keep an eye on temps. Otherwise I've used gauge battery widget to keep an eye on temps as well. Actually I use both currently and when my phones running warm the temps reflect that. Wouldn't hurt to try, besides at least then you'll have an actual temp number to warn you.

No, the phone has never been rooted nor exposed to moisture. I might keep in my pocket all day - usually it's fine, the odd time it's shut off and darn near burning hot. Perhaps it is the Mugen battery causing this although it appears physically fine and normally powers my phone for 1.5 days without heating up.
In any event I discovered that I apparently have no warranty! HTC says they don't do any repairs (?) and it is up to my provider to fix it. Well that ain't gonna work for me as I bought the phone from a Bell dealer and unlocked it to use on the Telus network. The dealer told me directly that once it was unlocked, all warranty is through the manufacturer. Neat system eh?

He's stated hes not rooted. And a temp widget won't help him since its overheating in his pocket.
OP this is clearly a hardware issue unless for some reason you have some seriously rogue app that's blowing up your system.
Or a defective battery is also possible.

oh well yes, by hardware I mean device+battery, aka not software.
I have the same problem with mine but I am rooted and running a diff rom i did it almost the same day I got the phone so I not sure if it did it before. Im running cryogen 7.0.2. I run about 1 ghz but have underclocked it to 600 and had still had the same overheat deal for me. Also have had it do it while on a table out of my pocket...
No bumps on the batt and no water...
Also my touchscreen doesn't work well at all...
I have also had similar problems with a mugen battery. From now on if i dont use a paper between the door cover and the battery, if i fully close the battery cover the phone will shut down. Mugen batteries are as crap as they get. Stick with the stock battery, im getting 2.5 days of use with RMK's G-lite rom.
P.S. IMO the Mugen battery has about the same "real" mah rating as the stock one.
You should change the battery.
I agree try a new battery, stock if you want. And I use the chichitech 1900 mah and it might get a little warm but not burning hot lol and that's with a case...so maybe the battery door is actually warmer. Hmm...anyways yea new battery or phone whichever is cheaper or more convenient.

does your S4 get hot below the camera?

Hey guys,
i noticed my phone was getting a little hot while i had the navagtion app going.
im using the S4 flip cover and right under the back camera, where it says Samsung - I felt the phone getting hot.
Anyone experience this?
Me too
It's always hot.
I mean it gets hot often.
Of course it gets hot because the CPU is right there.

According to the manual you shouldn't be using the phone at all when charging
Loool really? Its always under charge when i play or the battery drops in 2 hours i disconnect sometime when it become too hot

Using while charging is fine unless it is overheating.
The reason it's recommended not to use the phone while charging is because it reaches high temperatures much faster and so is more likely to overheat causing hardware problems
I personally don't game while charging since this phone (especially i9505) gets really hot really fast

yes i know that heating its very rapid while under charge..expecially now that its so hot during day and cant dissipate...in may when i bought s4 had less problem
i think i must think to buy an extended battery to play more than 2 hours hehehe are they already on stores?
Almost every good phone gets hot now and then. My rooted S4 barely gets hot. I mean i flashed a great rom (omega rom) and flashed an amazing kernel (perseus) and played a bit with cpu voltages and i undervolted my cpu and it barely gets hot , and when it does , it does not get very hot .

i tryed to underclock processors but, maybe i just made a mistake, i saw the battery drop much faster...i setted max speed at 1.2 last time but never tried again
OMG, OMG, OMG, finally!!!!:victory:
I thought I was going crazy, but YES, the phone gets unusualy hot just below the camera.
I noticed this right after performing the Apps2SD update, and since then have been freaking out!
I am afraid that constant heating and cooling of this kind can damage the sensitive parts inside,
so I have been limiting my use of the phone in the last few days.
People, this is not normal. Somebody needs to contact Samsung.
There must be a software patch for this...?!
Oh yesss!! Let's make another thread about overheating -___- It's already known that this happens, so you better get used to it.
Me Gusta!

Phone heated up and drained down to 5% with a buggy app or KitKat, potential damage?

I'm on a 2 week old AT&T G2 running the official KitKat (via OTA). Today I had an incident where I had torch on (via the Google Play app store, app named Torch written by Santoso Wijaya), then left it to auto turn off. However, apparently either the app or KK has a bug that caused the phone to heat up with the app running in the foreground while both the screen and the camera LED were off. By the time I felt it in my pocket, the phone had become toasty hot, and battery had drained from about 40% to 5% over a span of about an hour, but the phone did not shut itself down. I immediately rebooted it myself.
My question is: is the heat most likely caused by the CPU running at 100%? Is it likely to cause any damage given the scenario? Shouldn't the phone auto shut down to protect itself since it was running so hot (by the way it was *really* hot, like much hotter than the phone ever felt to me, even when I was playing games over LTE etc), or was it still not hot enough for that (which hopefully means it was safe?)?
Thanks for your inputs.
My question is why are you using a torch from play store when the phone has one on stock already, and yes the phone has a feature where if the battery/cpu hit a specific temp it should either a)throttle to cool down or b)auto reboot so I find that strange if you would have know the battery temp I could have told you if test it should have auto rebooted or not

It is probably completely fine. The processors in these phones have safety measures to shut themselves off when they get too hot, and they can also handle VERY hot temperatures. I remember my nexus 4 would get EXTREMELY hot, to the point it hurt to touch sometimes, and it's still doing fine

The only flashlight I could find on my stock AT&T KK is via a widget, which I do not want to use (I want a standalone app that I can launch via lockscreen shortcut etc).
