Need an update.zip -- possible way to unbrick phones - LG V20 Questions & Answers

I need an unmodified update.zip. It can be from any model except the H910, H915 or LS997 since they do encrypted OTA.
If you happen to have frozen the FOTA processes, would you mind unfreezing them, taking the OTA, but DON'T reboot. Copy the update.zip from your cache folder.
You need to be rooted to do this. If you do let your phone reboot by chance, the update will not be applied, you will just be stuck in a bootloop which I can help you fix.

Hey Brian
I think I have what you need right here.
I remembered someone posting a direct link to a ota-zip, it still works :good:

H901 T-Mobile Nougat v30b TWRP flashable update.zip

If you have already upgraded to Nougat using the manual method I posted, you don't need to flash this. If you do, you will get all the bloat back (again), and have to flash your su bin (again), but it isn't going to break your phone.
This is for the H901. Make SURE you have an ACTUAL H901, and not one of the half / half H901 / F600 phones.
If you are still on MM (any version), NOT LP, then you can use this to upgrade (or clean install -- just do a wipe) to Android 7.0 Nougat. This is from the official KDZ that was released on July 18th.
When you flash this, all the carrier bloat / LG bloat / crap / garbage, will come back. You will also lose root until you flash the su bin of your choice. That is the point of this, you WON'T lose TWRP, so you can still root...
Any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
Lastly, when I have time, I will be releasing a version that is already debloated...
Download v30b_update.zip
SHA1: 4ae9338b9301f4b56437ec761b678c8706c90bc7
If you want the FULL Nougat experience -- that is ALL of the v30b firmware except the stock recovery (we don't want to lose TWRP do we?), then flash this as well.
If you flash this, then you might as well delete all of your MM backups that you made with TWRP because you can no longer restore to MM using your backups (you can flash back to MM -- just not with the backups).
If you choose to ignore this, and decide to restore a MM backup, you will brick your phone.
Download full_nougat.zip
SHA1: b1ac20a6eaccf2dfbd22c09886ddcd03ab638ec3
Known working (tested by me) SU binary: download SuperSU 2.82.
SHA1: d980effb25a8f23bc944d6b1015923f310038031
It has also been confirmed by multiple users that Magisk 12+ works, but I have not confirmed that myself.
This will not wipe ANY of your data / apps / or anything else you may have on your phone. That is why it is an UPGRADE and not a CLEAN install
If you want to do a clean install, just do a full wipe, and then flash.
If you downloaded any of my failed attempts (really -- a typo in a ui_print line?!?!?), and don't want to download the whole zip again, you can download this zip. It is the META-INF directory. You will need to unzip the broken v30b_update.zip, and then extract this over top of the META-INF dir, and then zip it back up.
Make sure you use recursion, and make sure you unzip it on TOP of the META-INF dir, not inside it -- or you will end up with META-INF/META-INF/com/google/android. Won't break your phone, but won't flash either.
-- Brian
Thank you so much man you just made my day...
it will be nice if you can share the recommended SU zip...
Any of the current SUs will work. I am using SuperSU 2.82 (hell, there may be a newer version, but it works, so I don't bother), but I know that Magisk will work as well.

Just opened the zip file and notices META-INF folder is empty there are suppose to be some files in there which helps flash a file...
Weird. I just unzipped it, and it is there. I grabbed the update-binary from one of my LG G4 trees. It shouldn't matter, but I will replace the update-binary, and re-upload.
Sorry about that guys. Unfortunately I can't test this, well I could, but I really don't want to debloat my phone again
It is a SUPER simple script though...
-- Brian
Well THERES the problem. I uploaded the bad copy. I zipped without recursion the first time. Thought I nuked that copy. I am uploading the proper version now -- ya know -- with an ACTUAL META-INF dir

if you can only share meta-inf folder, I think it will work if you just copy files into the zip. that'll be awesome!!
OK -- I replaced the update.zip with the proper version, and I added the META-INF zip if you downloaded the bad one and don't want to redownload the whole thing.

Thanks a ton for the work you do helping keep this device alive.
I couldn't wait so I went ahead and unzipped the original update.zip and did the other method of pushing the three images via adb, and it works perfectly! thanks a lot again!
idk
i'm getting an error 6 when trying to flash. i did some research and they say it may be a line of code written somewhere wrong.

Well, what the crap. Edify script is ... or should I say WAS, one of the simplest things in the world. Now that I am off work and don't need my phone, I can actually test this before I post an updated zip.
The only thing I can guess is that the v10 doesn't let you flash from the zip itself, so I am going to extract the files to /tmp and then flash them.....
I will post an update as soon as I have this working. This has never been an issue before.....
-- Brian
Thanks Bro. But, I want to turn off big cores Lg v10 H901 Android 7.0. You can create file off core.zip? Plz....
Help me! when i try to flash it, i get the next msg: Updater process ended with ERROR: 6

As far as I know you cannot rollback to MM from Nougat. Just have to wait and see if someone is able to create a rooted and debloated kdz or .tot Nougat Rom for our H901. I tried to use Dirtycow method to root but the fastboot commands do not work.

H910 - Is there a safe way to go back to Stock?

I've seen people talk about flashing the H915 KDZ over it, but I don't want to lose data/radio. Does anyone have a safe method to go back to stock on the AT&T H910?
If you need it tonight, you can search through the H910 v10m root thread. I posted a link that flashes all of the v10m ROM just as a KDZ would. However, it doesn't work. You would need to extract it, remove system, edit the updater-script to remove the package_extract_file line for system, and then zip it back up.
You would then need to flash system with dd in an adb shell, once that was done, you could flash the repackaged zip.
I am not sure why package_extract_file won't flash system -- I have flashed system with it in the past without problems. So if you can wait, I am just going to extract system to a directory, and flash it with package_extract_dir after formatting system.
But most importantly, you most certainly don't need to flash the H915 KDZ to go back to stock.

Hey Dude. Any progress with this? My phone is slowly dying while rooted/bootloader unlocked. Sorry to ask for a timeline. Just getting desperate.

Remove ATT Rom and going to a non att stock rom

Hello,
I Just bought from a website a " refurbished " LG V20 and sadly when I turned it on I was shocked it was on att but it's unlocked, but sadly since it's at&t I can't get software updates, is there a way that I can have a stock rom on it instead off at&t? if yes can you guys show me how ?
Note: I have 0 experience and how to do these kind of things but I can follow guide lines.
Search for backup EFS. Do it.
Then feel free to flash the US996 KDZ. Again, if you search, there is plenty of info.

Download patched LG UP
Download US996 10p KDZ
Place your phone into download mode. With the phone off, hold vol up and plug in the USB cable.
In LG UP, use the DUMP option and select modemst1, modemst2, persist, persistent and misc
Then while still in LG UP, use partition DL mode, select the US996 KDZ, select all partitions, and flash.
Enjoy your H910 converted to a US996.
If you have data or voice problems after the conversion, then you will have to root to fix it. You can't root on 10p firmware, so you will have to flash older firmware. Even though you will have flashed the US996 firmware, you can use the H910 root procedure here. Once you are rooted, you can flash a US996 stock ROM via TWRP to return to stock US996 (with or without keeping root -- tis up to you).
Once rooted, you can flash modemst1 and modemst2 (ignore the others, it is just a good idea to have backups of them) that you backed up in step 3.
Boot to flastboot. With the phone off, hold vol down and plug in the USB cable
fastboot flash C:\path\to\modemst1 modemst1
fastboot flash C:\path\to\modmst2 modemst2
Again, those steps will ONLY be required if for some reason you get unlucky and your EFS gets hosed.
@cnjax Hope that is a chick, cause I decided to hold her hand good.....

Thank you, your post is the first one I found that makes it seem fairly simple.
I have 2 V20 h910s I want to unbrand, one running AT&T version 10m and one running 10r (which complicates matters further), and I would like to avoid installing a bootloader/root/etc. which prevents future updates/upgrades to later software versions (so other existing guides have put me off for multiple reasons).
Is what you listed all I need to do (in both cases), or do I need to root (or bootloader unlock etc.) first?
Can I install any future stock US996 ROMs (ie when Oreo is released) once I have done this, or will I have to reverse the steps and start over with h910/ATT software?

Hi.
I also have a few questions (as I'm new to this and have found conflicting information, and in addition I have two h910 phones running different firmware versions, one v10m and one v10r).
1) My phone's aren't rooted - Is what Brian explained all I need to do, or does his explanation require a bootloader-unlocked/rooted phone to work?
2) Are there any requirements/restrictions (eg. original firmware must be above/below version XYZ - if yes, does it make any sense to update the firmware to the latest AT&T version first)? Can I install any future versions of US996 KDZ that way too?
Thanks in advance.

1. For 10m one, follow Brian's guide, for v10r, follow Brian's guide. Once you have unlocked bootloader/rooted, you have conceded official updates. Also there are no stock KDZ restoring methods to revert back to H910 but you can try a method to go bone-stock H910 if you're rooted and have TWRP recovery.
2. For H910? no, and no need to upgrade to latest att firmware. You can just jump the gun to US996
Edit: Make sure you take full backup dump with patched LGUP (from Brian's guide as well).
Thanks

Two final questions (sorry to bother you):
1) Do I need to root/bootloader-unlock the device BEFORE proceeding to use Brian's guide, or can I just dump & then flash US996 straight away without rooting? (I read somewhere that root is only required if the signals fail after US996 conversion, but I'd rather ask than to skip root / just flash and then realize I messed up).
2) Will EFS be backed up in the process of dumping everything using patched LGUP, or do I need to back up EFS manually/seperately? If the latter is what I need to do, what is the best method? (I've found multiple, but most of them require root, which I'd rather avoid unless necessary)

1. Make a backup dump and flash US996 rom.
2. I havent known anyone who ran into corrupted EFS after crossflashing between H910/H915/US996. The restoring of modemst1,modemst2,modem, misc solves the problem of No baseband/IMEI. Do that at your own risk, there is no guarantee that you'll be safe from apocalypse

You do not have to root, just follow my post for flashing the US996 KDZ.
You only have to root IF you have signal issues, because that is the only way to fix them. Even then, you don't have to stay rooted.
I doubt you will have signal issues, but make sure you backup those partitions before you flash the US996 KDZ.

Hi.
I'm having trouble with LGUP. When I try to dump all phone files, it gives me an error 0x2000 saying "not enough hard disk space", even though there should be more than enough.

As far as backing the other files up -- no, you can get those from a KDZ, so no reason to back them up. The partitions I had you backup are specific to your phone(s).

Now flashed both devices, but noticed that the signals are unstable. Network jumps randomly from no network to 4G and back to no network etc - not in high frequency, but often enough for me to have noticed.
Does that mean I now have to go the route of rooting or is there anything else I can try?
Thanks and sorry to bother you once more.
PS: just noticed it seems to run stable with only 3G enabled, but once 4G is enabled the problem starts.

[ROM] H901 (T-Mobile) v30d TWRP flashable zip

This is the latest Nougat update that was released on 06/11/2018. It does not flash recovery or laf. If you must have laf, there is an additional zip to flash.
It is still ARB 2, so you can flash back to any version of Nougat.
I have removed the recovery-from-boot.p file from system so that recovery doesn't get overwritten, but that is the only change that was made -- this is not a debloated ROM.
Please let me know if you have any problems.
ROM download: h901_v30d.zip
OK, now for my spiel on laf...
You only need to install the laf zip if you have installed TWRP on laf in addition to recovery, and you would like download mode back.
I *HIGHLY* recommend that you keep TWRP on both recovery and laf. You will never be in a situation where download mode would help you, but TWRP couldn't.
You CAN be in a situation where TWRP could have helped you, but you are just stuck with download mode.
laf download: h901_laf.zip
-- Brian
Thanks for the update. I was very quick! I wanted to report that when flashing it did not show each file flashing like it usually does, it just keeps saying " please wait" , and then it finishes and on to the next zip which was the root file flash, that acted normally. I'm grateful Brian! Thanks
I'll take a look, I am sure I messed up a progress meter.
Thanks,

Does anyone have a link to the actual kdz?
I re-locked the phone trying to fix a grayed out "Enable OEM unlock" switch that was turned off in the developers options and in the process of locking the bootloader, it is unable to boot up again but I can still get into fastboot and download modes.
I know how to restore the phone through LGUP, just need the kdz, either 30c or 30d would work, thanks.
For some reason it seems that flashing this relocked the bootloader and bricked the device. Getting the message "Your device is corrupt. It cannot be trusted"
Was on 5.1.1 and it's my wife's phone. Downloaded the zip and Magisk and rebooted into TWRP. Flashed and now just about bricked. Now to try and see if I can unbrick the phone.

Can I downgrade to 7.0 stock firmware from lineage?

What happens if I have lineage 15.1 and I want to return to 7.0 stock can I do it?
should I do a back up? I read that I could lose the imei :crying: how can I avoid it?
I would use this tutorial
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_6LQr01GhY
thank you all for the help and advice :good::fingers-crossed:
sorry for my bad English
I don't know about lineage 15.1, but I had the OTA 8.1 update on my XT1644, and it broke my speakerphone and made my phone run like crap, so I just rolled back to stock 7.0 and am VERY happy.
I DID lose IMEI (I had IMEI=0), but from what I understand, it was because I manually flashed 7.0 from adb. I think that had I used the TWRP file, it wouldn't have happened.
I got IMEI back by following the directions in this thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/how-to/guide-moto-g4-plus-imei0-issue-t3859068
I also disabled OTA backups by doing this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=72373828&postcount=12
So that Motorola can't push an OTA on my phone and brick it.
You should make a complete backup following the directions of this thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/how-to/guide-moto-g4-plus-complete-partition-t3875787
I know virtually nothing about messing with phones or Android. My motivation was that if I couldn't get rid of OTA 8.1, I was going to throw away my phone and get something different. And I didn't want to spend the money on a new phone. I figured I'd brick what I have, before I spent money on a new one.
I pretty much followed the directions on this thread:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/how-to/guide-newbie-resource-thread-t3386584
Except that by loading 7.0 manually, it caused me to lose IMEI. Knowing what I know now, after flashing TWRP, I would have flashed 7.0 using TWRP. And I don't think I would have lost IMEI then.
Once I had 7.0 loaded, I flashed Magisk to get root.
Once I had root, I used a file explorer to go in and delete the app that pushes the OTA, so Motorola can't screw me. As far as I know, I am now permanently on 7.0.
Do this at your own risk. But you're already running Lineage, so I assume that you know way more about this than I do.
Edit: Just realized I kinda rambled here. So here's the condensed version of what I would do, I think... do at your own risk.
1. Use that thread I linked to back up your *everything*
2. Save stock 7.0 file, Elemental X file, and Magisk file on your SD card (all from XDA)
3. From TWRP, flash 7.0
4. Once you have 7.0, from TWRP flash Elemental X.
5. From TWRP, flash Magisk
6. From that link I posted, delete the file that stops OTA's.
I think you'll now be where I am, with rooted stock 7.0. But you should still have your IMEI. If you have IMEI=0, follow the directions in the link I posted.

I am eternally grateful for your help and message!! :good::good::good:
but in the tutorial that you sent me: https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4-plus/how-to/guide-newbie-resource-thread-t3386584
indicate that the installation should be done manually by adb... do you think I should do it for TWRP ??

Flashing Stock Firmware:
1) Download the correct firmware for your device from http://www.filefactory.com/folder/c6cdedc45a775d27
2) Download adb and fastboot from https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5j...ew?usp=sharing
3) Extract the firmware into the folder containing abd and fastboot.
4) Reboot the phone into Bootloader (power off, then press the power and volume down buttons simultaneously).
5) Execute these commands and make sure you receive an 'OKAY' after each command.

thanks
That tutorial was written years ago. I think back then, the only way was to manually install.
If you manually install 7.0, you will wipe your IMEI and have to restore it like I did.
I suggested the TWRP install because I *think* it wont wipe the IMEI.
If it does, you should still be able to recover it... but again, I barely know what I'm talking about. So please follow the thread about backing up your entire phone and persist, first. I am merely sharing with you what I did to roll back mine to 7.0, your experience may vary.
And again, if you do roll back, make sure you follow the instructions to disable OTA, because if you accidentally take an OTA, it will brick your phone for sure.
I literally just figured out how to do all this, this weekend. Prior to that I knew *nothing* about this stuff. So please read everything you can to educate yourself... its all here on this very good forum, you just have to piece it together. I am 100% a newbie.
