Just picked up one of these phones. Really like it so far! One issue I've noticed though, after a few days of ownership, it's randomly dropping/not detecting the sim card? It's happened at least twice where I've left it to charge over night and woke up to the no sim icon, and yesterday at some point while I was watching YouTube videos in full screen (in my hands, off charger, no notice of the drop either whenever it actually occurred). Quickly popping the sim tray out and in resolves the issue. At first I thought it was because I was using a manually cut sim card, so I've since replaced the sim but the problem persists.
Anyone else have this issue? Should I have the device exchanged?
Thanks
First the phone froze and after restart dropped sim
I just had the same issue occur just now. The phone had frozen for over an hour before I did a forced reset and now when it started back it shows no SIMCARD and no connectivity. I am like you, I really like this phone but hopefully this isn't a permanent issue.
Watched it happen just now. Goes from bars to no sim icon without error or notice. Resetting the network settings, resetting the phone, and powering it off/on won't fix it. Literally have to pop the sim in and out and its recognized right away.
I lost sim recognition after I flashed to LOS 11/30 and no matter what I tried, phone would not recognize the sim. Once I flashed back to stock, it came back. Hopefully this was due to the rom and the problem won't come back.
I am not sure if I lose the SIM, but I will say that when I am driving around with Android Auto, I constantly see the cell signal go from LTE to no signal every couple minutes...

Had same issues when I flashed back to stock I actually have better signal than when I got it out of the box.... Almost as if the software wasn't installed correctly or something
Same here I'm on the stock room. I'm wondering if it is an app I downloaded. Any idea how to wipe cashe not the apps but system.
This is happening at least twice a day now. It seems to be software related. Power off and on without taking out sim fixes it.

I've had a repeated problem (around 4 times so far) where my phone mobile radio must have died/reset while the phone was on standby with the screen off. When I wake the phone I am presented with the SIM pin code request screen. Usually entering the correct code reserects the phone. However last occurance it refused to accept the correct code so required a reboot to get it to work again.
Anyone else seen this?
I'm on O2 in the UK fyi.

ok I'll guess the answer myself...
I guess this is related to the random reboots people have been experiencing primarily on calls. I note some people say the phone can reboot while on standby, since I 'had' SIM pin code enabled this was as far as the reboot while on standby was getting. I've removed the pin code request which will mean I guess the phone just completes the reboot without requiring my input.
I'm hoping this is fixed with any update to the reboot during active calls issue that google confirm they have repeated themselves.
I've just had this happen on my Nexus S. What service provider are you with? I'm with Tesco (O2).
I'm O2, 30day rolling contract. Basically I've disabled the SIM Lock now so hopefully until the standby or call (not experienced this one yet) reboots occur the phone will just restart without my intervention required now.
Same here. After connecting the phone to the charger yesterday evening, this morning the SIM Enter PIN screen showed up (like the phone did a reboot overnight).
After checking the system services, I noticed the phone hasn't rebooted, because the services where running for more than 12 hours.
So the SIM Enter PIN screen showed up without reboot. I think a no-signal situation has preceded before this screen showed up (and maybe the GSM module has got a total reset).
This is on Telfort/KPN, The Netherlands.
Interesting ArnoutVos.. these were my original thoughts too since every time I've had the phone next to me and not seen it reboot just present me with the Enter SIM Pin screen. I just naturally assumed I was getting the at standby reboot some people had seen.
I've got the same problem on t-mobile. Probably about 6 times in 2 weeks so far. I've also had it where the signal bars at the top just show grey with a little cross by them and the only thing i can do to sort it is restart the phone.
It also drains the battery like mad whilst in this state.
I also had this 2 times (only had the phone 5 days)
That is, i turn on the screen and i have no signal, I dont think my phone has been restarted, as i dont see the sim pin screen, it has just lost the signal/radio died. And nothing seem to restore the signal, i've tried switching from 2g and back, only thing i found to get the signal back is a restart..
i have had the same problem with the signal dropping out on me all morning. sometimes i can make calls sometimes i cant and sometimes rebooting helps sometimes not. today i had the sim card replaced just to make sure and i thought it helped but it just did it to me again. its really frustrating...
I had the same problem about 10 times during the last week. It seems to correspond with the creation of Radio_dump files in the /sdcard/ dir.
Nexus S, Android 2.3.3 Root
I get the same issue on A1 in Austria, not sure what's causing it, but it is annoying.
Let me give my 2 cents:
Getting this same thing happening all through the various combinations of roms and radio firmware, device is Nexus S 9020T, network is T-Mobile in Croatia.
CM 7 with I9020XXJK8 radio
CM 7.0.2 with I9020XXJK8 radio
Blandroid 2.3.4 with I9020XXJK8 radio
Blandroid 2.3.4 with I9020XXKB1 radio
Sometimes there is no pin input screen, so if I don't notice the little icon in the notification bar I'm completely unavailable to calls and sms's. During the time if the Wifi is on it will continue functioning normally, and radio dumps get created.
Will give newer radio firmwares a try before I start crying in my pillow.
Edit: don't know if it happened with stock android 2.3.3 which came on the device, didn't have it on stock for more than 15 minutes.
Alas and damnations, again mobile network radio fail, this time with
radio I9020XXKB3 and blandroid 2.3.4, so issue still present.
Only fix is reboot, airplane toggle does nothing. Does anyone else in europe experience this with a USA T-mobile version nexus?
Giving I9020XXKD1 a try, still with blandroid now 2.3.4p1. Keeping my fingers crossed!
Well well...seems to be a common pattern, as its happened to me a few times also in the last week. First time ive experienced it also...just over a week.ago. cant remember which rom i was using as i.change quite often. May have been a new 2.3.4 mod or just 2.3.3 im not sure. Not a good thing obviously but not a big issue so far. Hasnt happened again since about 3 or 4 days ago now.

Such problems can occur when the SIM is disconnected from power or from reset line or has technical difficulties making it reboot.
Power or reset line can be disconnected if you have your connectors inside your Nexus bent. This can be tested by shaking your phone heavily in all directions. Be careful not to drop it. If the Enter SIM or the Enter PIN dialog appears, It's most likely a mechanical defect of your phone.
If the SIM is broken it may be reset itself. You can't really test this. Maybe something appears in the system or radio log. Another way would be to place your SIM in a known-to-work phone. If similar problems occur it's a broken SIM. You should call your provider to send you a new one.

Those are some good advices, thank you.
I would rule out bent pins as the cause and also no amount of shaking produces the problem, and the problem happened always when the phone was on the desk (and connected to wifi for what its worth).
However, a broken sim - maybe. I haven't had any problems with it so far in any of the 2 previous phones and I'm careful handling it, but the radio log suggestion is excellent.
I will definitely go through it next time it happens ( its "adb logcat -b radio" so others don't have to search for it)
Does anyone got a solution on this?
I found today about 10 - 15 dump-files located in my SD-Card.
Its probably caused by an App which we all use... but i couldnt figure out which one...
is there a dump-debbuging programm which i can use or something else?
It's kind of interesting
Using a Nexus S in Austria (T-Mobile)
I've "solved" this by disabling the PIN altogether and setting up a script to run when the network is changed to delete any radio dumps:

It doesn't seem to matter which ROM, radio or kernel I use....I wonder if this is a hardware defect?
sorry to resurrect an old thread, but this is to report that on my sns on pete alfonso's 4.0.3 rom and matrix 14.5 CFS and KF1 + KD1, I still get this problem of the radio dying.
has anyone found a solution?
to be more precise, the mobile network connection (calls and data) randomly dies and the only way to get it back is to restart phone. airplane mode doesn't help.
Guys
any of you had any bother with your mobile signal?
I'm on Vodafone and from this morning my signal bars are empty and I have no mobile signal.
I tried selecting Vodafone and Automatically select from the mobile signal menu, never made any difference.
I did a factory reset of the phone and it worked great, logged into google, restored my apps etc and it was all good
Then 5 minutes ago the same happened again, no signal and nothing I do makes it come back on bar another factory reset???
I've tested my sim in another phone and it is fine, no drop outs, no issues, I hope it's not a faulty phone (
Any one else had similar or can think what would be causing this?
Thanks
UPDATE -
Happened again, no signal bars, no connection
so this time rather than a full factory reset I removed the apps I had reinstalled, which were Spotify, Facebook, Twitter, Tapatalk and Whatsapp, rebooted the phone and my signal is back to full strength again???
Could one of the above apps be the problem?, is that even possible?
Its got to be some software problem.. These apps cannot cause such a problem
thats what I thought.
I've left the apps off for now, and if the signal seems ok after a couple of hours I will start putting the apps back on one by one and see if anything obvious happens.
The only App I thought maybe could cause it would be whatsapp as it ties in with your mobile number.....I'll see what happens throughout the day
happened to me once, all I did was put it into airplane mode and then back out of it again, and all was well
Same thingg happened to me. I'm on tmo though. Its defective. Waiting for replacement
I take it you've all changed your SIM cards to be on the safe side?
My experience is that the signal does have a tendency to drop out in weak reception areas and is slow to pick it back up again. I'm on vodafone in the UK.
I'm on orange and today I had nothing but problems. Dropping signal and everything I am not sure if orange is having problems. Had a HTC one s before never lost the little H above the signal bars.
Should I look at getting a replacement sorted.

I'm having the same problem with T-mobile in the US. It seems to mostly be an issue for me in areas of weak coverage. A reboot or any other way of resetting the phone connection fixes it, but still...
Been happening all day. Even now I have no mobile signal and yet I am on here using mobile data.
Usually a full reset would bring the signal back for a while then it would go again. On one occasion putting it into aeroplane mode then back again worked, but only the once. It looks like I'm taking it back this weekend unfortunately.
i had this issue when i first got the handset on o2, but after a while and me putting the o2 sim in, it picked up signal, swapped out for my orange sim and hey presto started working fine. It's been like that for a week now, but last night the battery died when i was asleep and after a charge this morning, no signal again on my orange sim. I'm in work now so cant swap out for my o2 sim as its at home, but will try and borrow somebody elses sim to test when they get in the office later this morning, Very annoying!
same issue discussed here: CLICK
Just tried another sim, o2 this time. Same issue, so back to shop on Saturday. Question is do I get another one or plump for the sIII or an htc
Hello
This seems to be a fairly common problem. I was wondering if anyone has a solution. My phone keeps dropping signal randomly and makes me restart to get it back. Usually it comes back in 1-2 restarts without anything changes to hardware (ie battery pull, sim pull, etc). Also, i have replaced both the sim card and the sim slot. And i have a piece of tape on my sim car to make it a little thicker.
I just upgraded my modem to mk2 and this seemed to help slow the drops but not stop them completely (have had 1 in 24 hrs). I already odined back to stock to no avail. Right now im on kitkat (gummy rom) with ktoonsez kernel and im about to change to kangakat.
Any help would be appreciated.

I had this happen with my SkyRocket, went to the AT&T Store and they replaced the SIM. Never happened again.

I had them replace my sim 2 times already. Watched them punch the card out in front of me.
Hey guys I've got my N6P International set, with nanosim.
Every once in a while, when I'm surfing the net, facebook etc. my data would just drop from LTE to "No Service" and stays there for 15 or so seconds before jumping back up.
I have tried going back to stock/locked bootloader, tested with another sim card and yet the issue occurs.
Using my sim card on another phone shows no drop in signal.. any advice or if I should RMA my device.
Currently back to 6.0.1 Chroma.
Its getting really frustrating in the last 10 mins to drop over 3 times.
With phone on take SIM card out, then restart the phone. After it reboots, then reinsert the SIM card.
thanks for the tip but it don't really help, still happening.
Have the same issue. Ended up having to RMA my phone. Huawei must have sent me a diffrent phone (used) since the IMEI is diffrent. It worked for couple hours then I got Nougat 7.1.2 update and LTE started droping again . Thought the update caused the issue so I unenrolled from Andorid Beta and rolled back to 7.1.1. but it did not help. Does anyone have a clue what could be the cause?
I do have the same issue for about 2-3 months, but only at work where's pretty bad signal. Data stays on until its used by any app, play store upgrade or yt video buffering for instance. Then it disconnects and search for signal again. Very annoying. At home everything works just fine. That's really really strange.
So, I have had the phone since the initial couple of batches first shipped out. No problems whatsoever, but now my SIM card is not being read at all.
Only just atarted happening a day ago. Restarting fixes it temporarily as well as removing the SIM and turning the phone off and on before putting it back in. The issue starts again after awhile and is super annoying.
If anyone else has had the issue and fixed it, I would appreciate the help.
Everything on the phone is stock. No root, flashes, etc....
Bump.
Anyone with the same issue, lol?
It really sounds like a bad SIM. Do you have another phone or SIM to test? If not, it could be worthwhile to try getting a new SIM from your carrier. Or, backup your data and do a complete factory reset and see if that fixes it.
