Root switch - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions & Answers

Hey guys/gals,
Is there anyway to turn root on or off to basically be able to use apps that use google's stupid safety net? I know there's magisk but I don't think we can install it without a custom recovery. (I can't find anything saying flashfire would do it).
Thanks!

Root for Adblock Plus and then Unroot

Would it be possible to root my phone and just use Adblock to modify my hosts file and then unroot it? I'll obviously have to keep my bootloader unlocked. I'm just wondering if I'll have any issues with Android Pay and the monthly security updates. Can I take updates with a modified hosts file?
Just root it and leave it rooted. My phone is rooted and Android pay works fine. You just have to check unroot in super su to add the credit/debit card . check to reroot and your good to go
Hmm will you be able to take OTA updates without sideloading though?

Probably not, but you have a custom recovery anyways, don't you?
What I did was add credit card to Android Pay, root, apply AdBlock with AdAway, disable root in SuperSU and then left it off, since I don't need root very often. I left SuperSu installed, just turned it off in its settings, so it would be easy to gain root again.
I can confirm that Android Pay works with root simply disabled. I made a purchase today with it. I will try with root tomorrow.

AdAway just applies a modified hosts file. It then does nothing except update that file, so you can unroot and keep adblocking active. Adfree also does this, and is my preferred app, however on my 6p it blocks some YouTube ads and then the actual video won't play either, which is a big problem, obviously.
*AdFree website may be down currently
AdBlock works without root you have to go into wifi settings manually set to localhost and proxy to 2020. It did not take at first but after several restarts over a day it is finally working. I am on Project Fi so I do dont know if the Network you are on makes a difference but I am not seeing adds now.
why not use systemless root from Chainfire?
You can have root and do updates by flashing system and radio if needed

Any systemless root for Verizon S7?

So I got the "engboot" root method to work, and it's pretty sweet... but, that means I can't play Pokémon Go anymore.
I tried using Magisk and it bricked my phone, because of Qualcomm SecureBoot - I had to use KIES to flash the stock image back (which wiped all my data in the process, ugh)
I've seen people talking about using Magisk and phh superuser on an S7, but I believe they're talking about the Exynos variant, not the Snapdragon one. And since they're talking about TWRP, that likely involves tripping Knox.
Is there some way to do something similar via FlashFire? All TWRP does is let you flash stuff to /system anyway... besides making backups. no reason you really need TWRP to set up systemless root - just that the auto installers try to piggyback off of TWRP (or Magisk which tries to alter your boot files, which causes SecureBoot to have a hissy fit)
I noticed in psouza's guide, he mentions "making a change" that disables root to be able to use Android Pay (which uses SafetyNet just like Pokémon Go)... but searching the thread, nobody has actually mentioned how to do what he talks about doing. I tried using SuperSU to disable root, and that just screwed it up entirely. SuperSU was unable to re-enable root, and I still had root built into the engboot image, so SafetyNet was still failing. Had to redo the adb commands to get my root usable again.
Ended up just going back to stock for now until a real solution emerges...

Wait, what? Seriously, I can just use that suhide xposed module and not even need to disable my root?
If that actually works... then that's pretty fricking amazing. That's the impression I got from reading that post, anyway - have YOU tried it? Curious if actually does what it says on the tin.

Sorry, i just read through it again and forgot it need systemless supersu installed which our devices dont have.
So sorry for the confusion.
I just recently switched bavk to my s7 edge,
But this is what i used on my nexus.
Yeah I was going to say, there's no way it's that easy.
Honest question though - assuming you have the "normal" root method (where it has /system/bin/su or /system/xbin or something similar), why can't you take those binaries that are written by the root exploit (along with the superuser app - which in the case of the S7 engboot method, I believe is stored as a normal user app anyway, not a system one) and copy them to wherever the systemless root puts the files? Not sure if it normally uses /data or one of the user folders. Then delete the binaries - since with root access you have r/w access to /system anyway.
I've been using Android long enough to know they're just different folders/partitions on the same device. You have /system, /data, /cache plus others these days.

Root & Encryption on Nougat?

Is there any way to make this work?
Since CF-autoroot doesn't work in nougat, I dunno how to make this work..
I don't know if is even possible, because as soon as i flash TWRP I cannot encrypt it again..
anyone?
For now only way is to install TWRP + SuperSU then flash old recovery
Im not sure but for this process you dont need no-verity-opt-encrypt..
Im on 7.0 Nougat and waiting better way to root it, i dont want custom recovery and i hear when you install TWRP bootloop is granted in 50/50 attempts

But you tried that method? (Flashing TWRP + SuperSU and then back stock recovery)
Crap... Nougat is really nice, but some basic stuff is missing for me... encryption and Xposed

im really sad, so i install custom recovery, flash Nougat debloated rom with root preinstalled and now i lose my CSC, *#060# or any other code not working.. im now on 7.0 UK version stock firmware and UUID codes not working ..
Root and encryption aren't working right now. Chainfire (SuperSU Dev) and a few other users are trying to get it to work.
For the time being, the most you can do is use a ROM like Helios and pick the encryption option. You won't have root but you can flash mods to /system in TWRP
My current setup is
Helios
Stock Kernel
Encrypted
Dual Speaker Mod
Private Mode Works
S Health Works
AppLock Works
Android Pay Works
Banking Apps Work

Well, It's an option... the most interesting mods that I used were with Xposed anyway, and for that the wait is going to be longer.
The device not encrypted is not very nice though... I guess eventually I just try it out meanwhile.
Thanks for the heads up @Galactus
Just out of curiosity, why do you guys "insist" on encryption? I still don't understand the repercussions of a decrypted device, let alone those of an encrypted device. I genuinely don't know. This is not a sarcastic or passive aggressive question!

Mainly data protection.
If my phone is stolen with encryption, once the thief turns the phone off that is it. The phone won't even fully load without my password. Sure, he can fully wipe the phone but this will also delete all of my data. Once reported stolen, it will simply be an expensive media player. Nougat also doesn't let you turn the phone off by using the power button unless you enter the phones password, so that helps using Android device manager or say Cerberus to locate the phone or enable it to play a loud alert
Without encryption. The thief can simply go into TWRP and take all the data
How about sd card encryption? Is this also not possible with rooted nougat? I just tried it and am stuck at the "checking sd card" message since hours. However the device is still working.

Root checking bypass / dual boot, newbie question

Hi,
I'm following this site for years now, whenever I need to root my phones or just have some technical question related to them, mostly I find the correct answer right here. So, I decided to ask something for the first time, because couldn't find an answer good enough about this matter.
I have a Galaxy S7 Edge (G935F) right now and I decided to root it for the first time. Didn't go so well, I got the "Verification Failed, Unable to restart your device..." error. Doesn't matter, I lost everything I had on my phone, but now it's working again. But after I wasted 2 hours and a lot of data for nothing, I realized, that I can't use a rooted phone anyway, because I need multiple apps (bank applications for ex.) which won't open on a rooted phone.
I have three questions:
1) Is there ANY method to successfully hide my phone being rooted, which works a 100% for apps like bank apps?
2) Can dual boot solve my problem, having a primary custom, rooted rom, but having a secondary clean rom for only these few apps? Or those apps check for something deeper, than that?
3) If 1) and 2) won't work, is there any other method to have a rooted phone, but use apps which doesn't work on a rooted device?
TL;DR: Wanna use bank apps on rooted phones, but they won't start because of the root. Any method to make it work?
Thanks in advance!

What is Magisk? A custom ROM? A custom recovery? A root thing like SuperSU?
A little more explain would be good, like the title says, I'm a newbie.

Custom ROM with no root

Hey guys,
I wanna reinstall a custom rom on my Mi9T, but I need one with no root or a way to banking apps don't know that I'm on a custom rom. I always used custom rom in all my smartphones with magisk to pass in Safetynet, but now some baking apps don't work anymore, like C6 bank (digital Brazilian bank), and other shows a message that in a few weeks my device won't be able to use the app because it's not safe and not use the original rom. All these apps are in the magisk hide, the magisk it's up to date too, I tried everything and nothing works.
What do you guys suggest? I don't want to go back to MIUI and for me, I don't need the root/magisk on my phone, but I wanna continue to use a custom rom.
Thanks

In the Magisk Wiki pages there are more hints how certain apps detect root and how to hide from, not only about Magisk hide
On the other side, to flash custom ROMs you need to have Bootloader unlocked. And that can be again a way for detecting 'root' (apps do not tell you exactly what unsafe they detected), hence you may again end up not being able to use your banking apps
To stay 100% safe in that cat and mouse game of "root" and detection, you should reflash stock, relock Bootloader and in future exclusively wait for OTAs to upgrade your stock ROM
