How can I format Adopted Storage without losing data? - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a 5TB drive connected to my Shield TV and I want to use it and the data on a PC. Is it possible?

You'd have to share the drive through the Shield by making it available on the network in order to access the data.
You can't disconnect the drive from the Shield and try to read it on the PC as it's been encrypted when you made it adopted.

Is it possible to connect a phone as "storage" for the Nexus 10?

I'm planning on getting a 64 GB HTC One X + OR a Samsung Galaxy S3. Is it possible to stream movies (good quality blu ray rips) from the phone to the tablet via OTG? Is it possible some way via wi-fi or bluetooth?
Also what's better for OTG, MicroSD adapter or flash drive? For movies especially.
Thanks!
You could probably use WiFi Direct to transfer (not stream) from your HOX+ or GS3, and you can also use DLNA if they're on the same WiFi network (this requires a router though).
As for USB OTG speeds, you have a better chance of finding a faster flash drive than you do with a microSD reader, not to mention that most large capacity microSD cards are not high speed even if the readers are "fast".
There is a free Samba server app in the play store. Should be possible to combine it with a program to mount a cifs/smb share on the tablet (MountManager worked great for me in CyanogenMod 10 on the Galaxy Nexus), then you can browse it as simply as if the content was in the internal storage. Might require root though, probably with a cifs kernel (or maybe someone can compile a module when the AOSP is released).
I don't know too much about USB OTG but current devices use MTR to transfer files rather than basic USB Storage so it's unlikely to work via OTG, (At least not without installing some MTR software onto the phone which would be more complex than the cifs solution).
Thanks for the replies.

This method of accessing phone memory is thought obsolete. Owing to various reasons MTP mode is found in all devices having huge Internal memory. But there is awesome workaround,
Download https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=os.devwom.usbsharereval where this app enables a virtual USB Drive. While This is an advanced app requiring Root access and prior knowledge of SuperSU, XDA has huge info if you're willing to learn about those. Try this free version app and if it helps consider purchasing https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=os.devwom.usbsharer which allows unlimited files on your USB Virtual drive...
(Always Thank those who help...)
thanks

Marshmallow, Internal Storage USB drive, can't move apps to it

Hey all,
I am finally getting around to setting up my NP. I purchased a Dodocool DC18 Gig Ethernet with 3 USB 3.0 ports to use Ethernet rather than wifi, and expand storage.
Ethernet is fine via OTG adapter, and I put in a Mushkin 32GB 3.0 usb drive (one that someone else says works well). I format it in Marshmallow 6.0.1 as an Internal storage device. It formats, I get a "slow" message (OK, I'll deal for now), and then go to any app, and I don't see an option to move the data over to it.
I was hoping to move the Kodi repo over to it (of course, if it performs). I watched a video which made it look easy, but it seems as if I don't have an option to move the data over to this USB drive.
Anyone know what I should look for? Is it not allowing the move because the drive is tagged as slow? Any hints appreciated...didn't find any hit searching for this exact issue.
TIA...Eric

Connect Multiple external Hard Drives ?

Hi everyone,
I was wondering if we can connect multiple external HDD. I read that the shield tv can only recognize one connected at once?
I tried with xplore to connect 2 external HDD and it doesn't show my 2 HDD , only the last one connected. :/
Am i missing something?
Thank you.
As far as I know the Shield should be able to recognize multiple external drives (they are named and tagged uniquely). For curiosity sake; Are you using the 2017 version? Rooted? Are they both attached directly to the Shield or are you using a (powered) USB hub?

Thanks for your answer !
Yes i'm using the 2017 pro version non rooted and both HDD are directly plugged into the shield (no hub) .
Do you use an other file manager to see two external drives connected at the same time? both HDDs work well with Xplore but only when one is connected.

It looks like I have to get back at my previous statement. Turns out that what I thought was general Android-practice is actually a feature of the roms I use (on other devices). On top of that I guess my own current situation is slightly different than yours; while I do have both a thumbdrive and a HDD attached I have adopted the thumbdrive, so it's not counted as an external drive. If I open Xplore I can therefore see both loaded.
Since I feel a bit like an arse I did some digging to see if there is anything you could do to hook up both drives. Turns out there's more people that have run into this here including a very descriptive solution should you have 2 identical HDD's. Otherwise, below a list of possible solutions;
If you are rooted, or willing to do so.
There is an app called "StickMount" by Chainfire which basically allows you to hook up multiple external drives and even symlink them. The catch is; I am not able to test this since myself I'm not willing to root my Shield 2017 just yet.
If you aren't rooted.
There are a few things you could do.
1] The solution I went for myself; buy one big USB 3.0 drive (I went for a 5TB one) and transfer all your stuff.
2] You could choose to adopt one of the drives as internal storage. There are some glaring downsides to this though; you can no longer attach that drive to other devices, it will at first wipe the drive and if its not a fast HDD it is going to lag your Shield down. Also, since your Pro already *is* 500GB and you would basically swap that space for one of your HDDs you'd have to consider whether or not it is worth the effort.
3] A somewhat farfetched solution; should you happen to have a modem that supports hosting a HDD as as NAS, you could use that to hook it up remotely. It's not as fast, but technically it is a solution.

Questions about using a hard drive attached to my Router

If I attach a USB hard drive to my Netgear R7000 (readyshare) will I be able to access it on my Nvidia Shield? I'm afraid that if I mount the usb drive to shield It'll be locked down to the shield only.. Also, if I can access all my data off of readyshare through the shield, can I mount an additional hard drive(or a usb flash drive) to my shield for even more combined storage?
Yes. I had R7800 for about a week and it worked fine. I have an external drive attached to my Asus Rt-AC86 now. I use Plex to access the media but have used Kodi also. With Plex I pay for Plex Pass.
Strangely, it works better this way than when I had the drive connected directly to the Shield.
I can still plug other drives into the Shield and access media/files on them also.
As to your concern of the drive being locked down to the Shield, I've never encountered that unless there is a way to mount it where that could happen.
*** After further thought, I only used Kodi while the drive was connected to the Shield.
