Endless "App <x> not responding" messages - Shield Android TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a new Shield Pro 500Gb (bought a couple of weeks ago). It was fine until last night when it started running really, really slowly. Even getting the Settings menu up happened in clearly-visible stages.
Then it started giving weird messages saying that apps are not responding - with options to Wait or Close. Choosing either option took ages before it did anything.
Eventually, it got into a loop where one message said "System UI has stopped responding", so I'd choose Wait or Close (didn't matter, same result either way), then it said "Leanback Launcher has stopped responding" and these two messages kept cycling around until I re-booted it.
On re-boot it was the same - sometimes I got a couple of minutes of normal performance then back to these issues.
The only change that day was I allowed a Plex server update via Google Play store. I ran a Dr Web scan but it found no malware.
I've booked a return with Amazon, but since I've spent days setting this up, I just wondered if anyone could help before I go ahead with the return.
SIDENOTE: I bought this to replace a UK Virgin Tivo box. All we wanted was ability to watch live TV with a decent EPG and recording facility (series link, timeshift etc and some catch-up apps). We then had to buy a HDHomeRun Connect tuner and it seems that might be all we need anyway, possibly with a good NAS for storage?
We already have an Amazon Fire TV box which has catch-up apps on it so the Shield may be overkill anyway, since...
We bought the 500Gb version due to dire warnings about Plex server not using adopted storage for its database but tbh Plex was so poor that I gave up on it (Live TV seems to be only emerging from beta and is very slow, EPG is poor and ... etc etc) and we're not worried abnout viewng outside our home network, so I get the feeling that there's probably a better option out there for what we want. Any recommendations would be most welcome.

App not responding and shield unresponsive
Hello,
I had the same issue on my brand new shield pro (received it last week). When I started the device for the first time, it first installed all updates (firmware 6.0 and apps) by itself.
As soon as the install completed, the shield started to be very slow, with frequent messages "App <x> not responding". After hours of experimentation, I found out that disabling the plex client app solved my problem !
You read right : the plex client, not the server ... and now I actually use the plex server with a huge database and everything goes well. I had to install kodi with the PlexKodiConnect plugin to access my media, and I also use the official plex app from an android tablet.
In my opinion, even if disabling the client solved the problem, it is the server that have an issue, and makes the shield unusable when the client connects to it.
I wonder why almost no one seems to have this issue for it appeared on my device from the very beginning ...

I have the same issue with my shield tv 2017 pro. After a restart it runs sluggish even when selecting an app. And when I open an app I get the Unfortunately app has stopped error. Even the Leanback Launcher gives the error and says close or wait. What is weird with my situation is it appears to stop after the shield has been on for awhile. I disabled plex media server, and plex client but it didn't seem to resolve the issue for me. I am on Experience 5.2 and rooted. I would rather not do a factory reset unless there is no other way to resolve it.

Same here!
I have a First Gen shield 500gb that had this problem also. I RMA'ed it and got a replacement one but it also does this. Everywhere I read claims that the shield has the best performance. I don't know what else to do. Pretty certain it isn't related to apps installed because my systems were pretty much bare setups.

Yeah I noticed it does run poorly after restarts and gets better as well.

This might help. https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=59768359&postcount=3

I found out that adoptive storage on slow sd card causes this issue, but I'm surprised users with the pro have this issue.

My shield tv pro started to be unresponsive after 6.2 update. So I started to Google and found ESxplorer was the root of my problem. I uninstalled ESxplorer and everything is back to normal.

It has been recommended countless times to not use ES on a Shield as it causes problems.
TBH I'd never touch it, it's a pile of garbage.

Nexus 7 extremely slow :(

I got my Nexus 7 in the first batch from Gamestop on the day of release. Initially, the performance was very fast, even faster than my Galaxy S2. However, after a couple of weeks now, it has become extremely slow. It is still stock, havent even rooted it. It is a 16gb model, and has close to 10gb free. I have tried clearing cache, closing all running applications, restarting but nothing really has worked.
The problem is almost every app is very slow. I get a notification of an email, i click on it and then stare at the white email screen for almost 10 sec before it opens up (the regular email app). It almost feels like a different device now than what i bought few weeks back. Other applications that run equally slow - Google Reader, Chrome, WSJ (this is perhaps the worst), Fluent News Reader. I am not much into games so havent tried a lot of them.Oh, and it is no match now to my Galaxy S2 Skyrocket or even HP Touchpad Cm9 that i got rid of last week.
I don't want to exchange it as it does not suffer from all the other problems being reported here (and am afraid that the new one might exhibit those). Please help.
Just a guess, but you most likely loaded something on it that is doing that. Check what you have installed on it, perhaps uninstalling some of the larger things to see if you can figure out what is holding it up.
Stock Nexus 7 Image
If cleaning the device does not work, you can always flash back to the stock image, which can be found on developers.google.com
Be sure to backup your apps and data!
or for the most simple of us...
Setting>Privicy>Factory reset.
That will remove any app that might be causing it.
Be warned tho, i think on this device it wipes the internal storage...
how is your WiFi signal?
seeing how almost every app require internet access, the delay could be it trying to connect.
Actually I thought that too... but my wireless signal is very strong in my small apartment and i have 30mbps line. I checked with speednet app and i am getting 13mpbs down, 4 mpbs up on nexus 7.
I am happy that this seems like my issue only - i will try to remove apps one by one to see if it helps or worst case, i will do a factory reset.
I was wondering if there are any known culprit apps responsible for memory leaks or something.

I have noticed how mine has been very sluggish when there are apps upgrading in the background or installing, etc. Maybe turn off auto update for play store?

If you send me a PM, I'll give you my email address and I can help you narrow it down by using screenshots of your app drawer.
install watchdog task manager lite, it monitors app in the background and tells you which one is causing problems.
have you tried turning off gps (location service) and see if hats the issue?
same thing

Just wanted you to know you aren't alone here...I have been seeing the same exact behavior on mine. I have started to uninstall apps one by one. I must be a bad app or something. If not I'm gonna wipe it and start over. It does feel disconcerting to go from easily the best tablet experience I have ever had to it becoming so sluggish.
i have the same problem, mine did the same thing on stock, ran great for a week or two, then became unbearably slow. so i rooted it and it wiped all data and the problem seemed to be fixed. then another week or two passed and its back to slow. i found out after testing with quadrant it has something to do with the i/o on the device, because the i/o score was abnormally lower than all the devices. putting a custom kernel will help, but still the i/o score is still quite low. i dont want to wipe all data again and if anybody knows a fix it would be greatly appreciated
nexus 7 has Kingston eMMC, it is better then the crummy Prime Hynix eMMC, but is eMMC none the less, not proper NAND flash/SSD
Well you could've had a bad app that is bogging your system down. A factory reset may be the only option so you can start fresh

Check the cache size of your Google Playbook or Magazine apps. It keeps downloading large files (400 mb) and may fill up your storage...causing it to slow down?
Having the same issue after owning it for two days. I really wanted to like this tablet, but between the sluggishness, and other various shortcomings, I'm going to be returning mine.
I deleted WSJ app and it seems to have helped a lot - not as fast as new, but a lot better. One thing which still irritates me is email app which just seems to be too slow...
Sorry to say but mine so fast I can't keep it down it trys to fly away lol

Same
has anyone been able to figure this out? I'm having the same problems and I've been running watchdog but there been no out of control process is on my device. I have wiped the device and the same thing just keeps happening after a little while it'll get very slow. it happens more often than not when there something in the background downloading are using the internet, but it's definitely not my connection because I've had no problems with any other devices.
Been getting similar behavior recently. cm10 euroskank, trinity 7.
Edit: in logcat, getting stuff like
I/Choreographer(10656): Skipped 30 frames! The application may be doing too much work on its main thread.
W/InputEventReceiver(10656): Attempted to finish an input event but the input event receiver has already been disposed.
I think I may have come across a solution. For me, the slowdowns were always connected to when something was downloading in the background, or when a process was using data, so I went through and turned off syncing on any non-essential Google services and other apps, and it seems to be working much better right now.

Apps Crashing

hi guys,
been having problems with my Asus TF101 for the past week. The tablet info is as follows.
Android OS: Stock 4.0.3 unrooted (I checked for any available updates and this is the latest version)
Kernel: 2.6.39.4
Build Number: 9.2.1.27
The problem is basically as follows. A few days ago I tried launching an app which I use on a regular basis (Dolphin Browser) after not having used my tablet for a few days. The app would open and then just randomly shut down suddenly (there was no message about "This app failed to respond/crashed" it just automatically closed). I tried some other apps and they would also randomly close. I have dozens of apps installed but some of the ones which failed are listed below. I did not have an oppurtunity to/did not try testing many other apps.

Apps which continued to work include Gmail, Chrome, Youtube and the majority of the preinstalled apps (e.g. Gallery, Camera, Supernote). A notable exception to this is the preinstalled Internet browser, which also closes after a few seconds and does not work. I wondered if there was a problem with the apps themselves, but given the nature with which so many apps suddenly stopped working I'm thinking that is highly unlikely. The apps listed above had worked fine previously without issue (I have been using them for over a year) and they continue to work fine on my other devices (Galaxy S2 i9100T running stock 4.0.3 rooted and HTC HD2 runnig AOSP ICS).
I did a factory reset and hard reset (using both methods i.e. the Vol Down+Power button option and the option to go via 'Settings'). However the problem continues. I cannot even log into my Google account anymore on the tablet because the Internet browser does not work and it is necessary for logging into Google; therefore I have been unable to download a lotta the apps (I have the extra security verfication for my Google account). I tried sideloading Dolphin Browser but it still failed to work.
I have never had any other problems with the tablet (except for the occasional lag/crash)
The tablet is still under warranty (extended warranty) so I have filed a claim however it may take some time to get sorted. As you might be able to tell from the apps I have listed, I am a medical student (final year) and my final exams are just 7 weeks away, so the last thing I want to do is be left without a device I depend on for note-taking/studying while the device is being repaired.
I have never rooted on installed a custom ROM on the tablet and am reluctant to do so right now given the urgency of the situation. Does anyone have any suggestions about what I can do to sort this out?
is "force gpu rendering" off or on?
have you tried clearing the cache for the apps?
seems odd that nothing was changed and they are fracked.

I tried force GPU settings with both options but it did not make a difference. I have also uninstalled/reinstalled the apps and done a factory reset so I'm fairly certain clearing the cache is not the issue.
sigh this is getting to be a major headache for me. The guys who I have the extended warranty with confirmed there was a fault with the tablet, but because the fault was a software (which sounds like a fault with the operating system itself) fault they are not going to cover the repair costs. Fortunately we have some pretty strong consumer laws down under so I'm going claim it under my statutory warranty, especially since it has only been one month since the manufacturer's warranty expired.

Apps take forever to load

Since the Oreo update the performance of my Nvidia Shield has gone down the toilet. Initially the UI was very sluggish. That seems to have improved a bit although it's still nowhere near as fast and responsive as it was on Nougat. But now the slow loading time of apps is starting to drive me crazy. When I click to open an app like Amazon Prime Video it takes 5-10 seconds for the app to open and then another 5-10 seconds for the home screen to populate with content. Before the update everything was pretty much instant. Is there a way to improve Shield performance after this terrible update? I already did a factory reset and it didn't help.

Same observation for me
I contacted Nvidia support via live chat. They said they would get back to me via email but since this doesn't seem to be an uncommon problem that probably means there's no fix.
Maybe a little of topic. /rant
I wouldn't say mine has been sluggish, but I've been having plenty of problems.
Anytime I tell one of my GH devices to do something on the shield they blink and then give no response. Even in My Activity logs for Home there is nothing in response to my commands.
Starting to really irritate me, I'm about done with Google Home and it's only been a week. Maybe HomeKit won't be so buggy (oh no! Apple :silly. Trying to convince my wife to buy into smart home stuff, and Google is managing to make it seem nothing short of a stupid gimmick. Doesn't do what it should more than half the time.
"Ok, Google, skip the track that's playing."
"Okay, but please try again and specify the device."
"Okay, Google. Skip the track that is currently playing on Spotify on the Shield."
...
...
...
Nothing, not even in activity logs.
Assistant OSD won't go away until I press back or tell google to "go away."
I had to reinstall Spotify today because it wouldn't load ("error" on Spotify start screen), even after reboots.
I just got this thing and have no experience with pre-oreo Shield, but it isn't difficult to understand why so many people are upset.
Might be driving to Best Buy buy the end of the week.
Here I thought my FireTV 2 was being a pita.
I did another factory reset. I did the 2 hour version before going to bed so the Shield would be powered on overnight in case it needed to do some background optimization. It took me hours to set up everything again and the end result was no improvement at all. My Shield Pro is still laggy and slow to respond to commands and might actually be worse now than it was before the factory reset. I've read the cheaper 16GB model is not experiencing this issue so at this point I really regret spending the extra money on the pro model. It's very frustrating to have a $300 streaming box that's barely a year old get completely trashed by an official software update.

The 16Gb version also lags after Oreo update
Performance improved after the second factory reset but it seemed to take a day to settle down. It's still not as smooth and responsive as before the update but it's also no longer maddening to use. I had a bunch of Plex crashes after the second factory reset but it seems like that might have stopped. I had a half dozen crashes over the first day and a half but so far none since then.
Oreo is faster than Nougat on phones so I don't understand why the opposite is true on Android TV. People are reporting problems on other Android boxes that got the Oreo update as well so this apparently isn't just a Nvidia issue.
Performance got so bad I ended up doing a third factory reset. After the third one everything is fast and responsive. Not sure why the first two factory resets didn't fix things. This time the only app I downloaded was Emby so maybe an app I downloaded previously was causing problems.
post 7.2 USB and app issues
i have the 2nd gen 16G version of the nvidia shield. i took the 7.2 experience upgrade and i am having lots of troubles:
my external USB hard drive just keeps scanning and never reachable
not able to start up many apps that did rely on that external storage
I have rebooted several times with no effect
i have also tried unplugging everything and then restarting them in order.
I have avoided so far a factory reset or forgetting the USB storage as those are a bit nuclear, but if there is no other option I must since most of my games and Kodi relied on teh USB and they are unusable (I did uninstall Kodi and attempt to reinstall) at bootup of Kodi, it still says "waiting for external drive.

Shield TV 2019 Ram Management

Hello. I was hoping someone who is experienced with both the standard and pro units of 2019 could help me in this matter. Both of these units are extremely hard to get ahold of right now or I would test myself, sorry to bother.
I was able to get my hands on a standard unit and everything is working as expected except it has horrible ram management. Either that or just lacking ram in general. I can't get any app to stay in ram. If I leave to simply look at the settings menu, when I return to the app it completely refreshes. I might, come back to see it in its same state if I only look at one app but don't click on anything, but thats not guaranteed.
No sense in even having an app switcher when it behaves like this. Its as if the developer option that forces all apps to close when you exit them is somehow enabled. I checked in developer settings and it shows disabled. I also disabled eco mode for all the apps I use and it didn't change anything.
I'm thinking the standard unit just doesn't have enough ram to keep up with demand. But i can't test to be sure. Can anyone with a pro unit confirm that they can browse through a few apps and then return to their original app and it be in the exact state you left it?
Any help would be appreciated, thank you.
i've basic Shield and i also keep researching this frustrating issue. Some apps will return to their previous some not.. Plex (the most used app) is the most problematic, always restarts even when just going briefly to settings. Can't imagine it's poor on Pro unit also. That's why i keep Basic version, and only upgrade to "Pro Platinum 2021" with 8GB RAM later
i would really like the app switching LG TV does - but i must admit Shield UI can be even faster (when it's not freezing).
Stability ** (tons of freezes and crashes, fan should not run in quiet mode)
Speed ***** (ultra fast UI and apps especially can be faster than WebOS, the only slow app is Plex)
App management *** (poor app switching, nice app widgets on home layout, not good integration - can't search all content AGAIN grr.. yeat another device whose global search will only throw some youtube results)
Connectivity **** (Dolby vision flickers, otherwise nice companion to AV receiver and a must for TVs without eARC)
Control *** (i like the backlight buttons, but in the end i switched back to TV remote which can control it too, and can display inputs so well, and i hate more than 1 remote.. also arrow keys are so small that i'm making mistakes frequently)

I have a Shield TV 2017 and the new Shield TV Pro and they are all the same with ram managment. You pause a show and then go to another app or two and when you come back the entire app has to refresh and you have to find your show again to start it. Some apps refresh every time for no reason, just like you say. In comparison, the Apple TV 4k (which has the same exact 3gb of ram), can have as many as 11 apps open without refreshing and I can have 4 different movie streams paused at the same time and I can switch between them at any time. They end up staying in ram for many days at a time. Its nice to return to an app 4 days later to finish a movie and its right where you left it and all you have to do is unpause.

I have the MiBox 3 and never had this problem with less ram.
Have you found a solution yet?
Is there anything is the developers menu that we could tinker with?

Is your Nexus 10 responsive? Mine is almost unusable.

I had the latest OEM rom. I've installed the custom Lineage OS 18 rom listed here. The OEM ran 'better' but still not well, even after a full wipe. Really only want to use the tablet for Plex. With all apps disabled that can be disabled, the CPU stays maxed. Clicking something takes seconds for the OS to respond. Bluetooth regularly crashes. I tried installing the YouTube app since Plex was super-choppy, and it literally took 10+ minutes to install. Being that the tablet runs like a complete turd with fresh wipes/installs, I'm thinking there's some sort of hardware fault.
Before I give up on it, any suggestions? I literally only want it for watching Plex or YouTube, but it can't even handle that as-is.
Maybe it could be that the eMMC is gone for a toss and some error correction is in process that causing CPU Load to go 100%? Not really sure here.
I have the same issue. I would think old age makes emmc veeeeery slow. Same thing happened with my old Nexus 4. I am using the tablet as wall tablet with Home Assistant opened in a full screen browser and still is verry sluggish. What seems to make things a bit better is using memory trim software.
Any trim software you recommend?
I ended up just buying a Galaxy Tab S8+, but if I can get some life out of the Nexus 10 that would be great too...
