An update to the H2OS out after a long time. The alternative ROM for the OnePlus devices is now updated to the version 3.0. The Hydrogen OS is mostly designed for the Chinese variants of the Oneplus devices. However, the H2OS 3.0 can also be installed on a regular or international variant of the OnePlus 3 and the OnePlus 3T. The ROM brings many new features.
As the Hydrogen OS is a firmware for the Chinese variant, it doesn’t come with the Google Apps pre-installed. You will need to install it separately. Fortunately, we already have a Google play store installed APK which can easily install the Google Play Services onto your Android device.

Thanks dude ! Appreciate it !
Will all the US bands be enabled with Hydrogen OS?
Hi, can anyone using a US OnePlus 3T confirm whether the US version of OnePlus 3T with Hydrogen OS will have the exact same bands enabled as the US version using Oxygen OS? I want to be as Google-free as possible and starting with a manufacturer-supported Google-free ROM like H2OS sounds like a good way to go.
I'm open to other ways to accomplish this but simpler is better for me. Finally moving away from Windows Phone, and yes I know, why would you want Android if you don't want Google? Answer, pathetically trying to cling to ownership of my personal data and can't afford the next best OEM privacy option, the iPhone (which isn't a great privacy option either). Thx!

I've been down this path too many times. It's doable but not easy. First, scrap H2OS since Playstore is preinstalled. I'd go with either a lineage based Rom or Freedom OS (OOS with the option to leave all google and OP Apps out on Installation). Just don't flash Gapps after the Rom.
But thats really the easy part. The hard part is the setup. First, you'd need to sideload at least a browser. Get the browser apk of your choice from a reputable source (xda labs is great. It even manages Updates for you). Depending on the apps you need, you'll need some playstore alternative. Some things can be had through xda-labs. If Open Source is your thing, f-droid is great too. Just don't download apk's from somewhere on the web. Your privacy might be more at risk than with google on it.
Also, get a vcard backup of your contacts (or run your own carddav server). Finally, some apps simply won't run without google framework (that's why it's back on my phone). For example "Bring", a shopping list, won't run without google framework. Don't ask me why. But i need that app. Just be prepared for some major inconveniences, and having to find workarounds... :good:
Thanks for the great input domsch1988. You've given me exactly the tips I need to get started. One question though. You mentioned Playstore is preinstalled on H2OS. I was under the impression the main difference between H2OS and OOS was H2OS's removal of all Google specific stuff to meet China's Google restrictions. I assumed that included Playstore. Are you sure it's in there? I only ask because I'd rather start with a OnePlus supported ROM if I can but if that's not the case I'll take the leap and go with one of the ROMs you suggest. Can you recommend a lineage-based ROM I can start with? And, do you have an opinion on microG as a Play framework replacement? It seems like a good idea in theory but the way it's implemented gives me some security concerns.

OP stated that PlayStore APK is preinstalled. I have not tried h2os, so can't say for sure. You could give it a try. And with root you can always uninstall system apps.
I never tried microg myself. For me it was always no g at all or the pico Gapps package.
As a lineage based ROM, on my note 4 resurrection remix was great. On the 3t I'm on stock oos, so not sure.
Play store or anything Google is not installed on H2OS
i am using it currently tried to go without play store and other apps for one day but couldn't deal with all the Chinese apps so, installed OOS although everything could have been installed on H2OS also.
Ok

All I've ever owned is Samsung devices. Now I've found a carrier unlocked version of this (swappa), and after reading about this device I like what I see. I like it so much I don't even want a custom rom or root. I want stock AOSP + F-Droid, can i safely remove/pm uninstall Google play services and the other in built GApps including play store, without bricking this device? And can I do this on Android Pie?
Trying to make a FLOSS device. Is this possible?
Hi all.
I have a Moto G5 Plus(XT1687) that I would like use a custom ROM on. In fact I bought a second one to specifically do this with. I have only done this once with a Samsung Galaxy S5 and the MicroG version of LineageOS 14.1
With the Moto G5 Plus there are some extra steps from what I gather(you have to get permission from Motorola in order to unlock the bootloader is one example). And there are some intimidating things that I am just unsure about - such as to install Arrow you have to have Oreo 8.1 installed - but when you unlock the bootloader it wipes the phone? So how is this possible? Do I have to install the stock Oreo ROM first? Where do I get the stock ROM?
I have done a couple of months of searching for guides but have found different instructions and some with broken links to software on google drives or other sites I am not sure are safe. I asked about on the subreddit for Moto G and they pointed me here(which I have read a lot here over the past several months.).
Here is what I know:
1) I will need to enable developer options and USB debugging on the phone
2) I will have to get a code from the phone through abd and fastboot. In order to unlock the bootloader, I have to contact Motorola. give them a code and they will send me a code in order to do so(correct?)
3) I need to install TWRP in order to flash any ROM and other software, such as Gapps.
What I am asking of the community:
1) Legitimate link to the software needed.
2) Recommendations for ROMs. What do I want? I want to get be able to get out of the clutches of Google as much as possible. I understand that Android is Google, but most of the custom ROMs have removed most of the Google code. There is not a ROM from the MicroG website for Potter, which is what I really wanted(is this just LineageOS with thew micro Gapps?) I also have found replacement apps for almost all of my normal apps in the F-Droid repository. Ones I have studied: LineageOS(no official for Moto G5 Plus), Arrow OS, HavocOS and RessurectionOS. I have heard there are many out there. Important to have the actual phone part working well.
3) What is the differences in the different Gapps packages(Open Gapps, Mind the Gapps)?
4) What is this magisk I keep on reading about? Is that just for root? And don't you need root to install TWRP?
5) A step by step guide to make sure I don't jack this up. Even though this is my 'play' phone, I would like it to become my daily driver and plan on getting a SIM card as soon as I can get a stable OS on it.
6) Any tips or recommendations for someone like me.
I appreciate any input.
Thank you.
OK, I found this, but it is over a year old.
Is the info there still relevant? Is there anything that has changed since it was posted?
one two and three of what you know is ok.
The custom rom must be for the device.
On my motog5 plus I use Crdroid-Rom without Google Gapps.
Magisk is used to get root, that is, make changes and view the root of the device.
The information is valid. Rom-are outdated.
Thank you. Doing more research. Hopefully I will have a functioning device by the end of the weekend.
If you want smoothest experience try citrus-CAF its pure CAF rom its very nice smooth and fast.
I recently bought 2 of the new 2nd gen 7" Onn tablets with Android 10 Go Edition for my young kids. I have been able to root them with help from the wonderful people here.
Has anyone run into problems with the limitations of Android Go? Mainly it has disabled the "Draw over other Apps" permission/feature. This is mainly necessary for the childproof app locking protections I want to install.
As a work around I've have to get an old apk from a compatible app that doesn't request that permission, and this has worked so far. But I have other apps I'd like to use that don't have old apk's that work.
I assume once we finally get a full copy of Android running on one of these we won't get that feature. Just curious if anyone has another work around?
If you have them rooted, have you looked for a magisk module that might allow it? I am playing with flashing an Android 10 GSI right now. If I can get it running right I will post in the other thread I started
Hi,
This is the second version of the CrDroid that I flashed to my OnePlus 8 Pro but when install my Bank app to check my balance on my phone as can be done by stock ROM it says that it does not support Jailbroken devices although i'm not rooted or so....is there a way or a work around to have this app not see my phone as a jail broken device
Note: after unlocking bootloader and installing Cr Droid 7.3, I even went back to stock although the bootloader is already unlocked and the Bank app was opening and functioning as normal.
Thanks for an early response...
