Don't really know anything about phone software need help. - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a Moto x pure, apparently the person I bought it from had it rooted and installed TWRP. He said he unrooted the phone or something before he sold it. I installe some app that said it was not rooted. Anyway, it will not let me do any updates or get the ota nougat update. Also when I do a factory reset and the phone restarts it comes back on all the same if all my stuff and there is some type of moto speach access software that randomly calls people or just responds to TV/radio in the background, cant figure out how to turn this off. I know nothing about rooting, using twrp or anything, just know basic android functionality. Awhile ago I googled some stuff and tried to remove twrp and install the factory recovery or something, but that didn't work. So I am looking for any help to get rid of twrp and reload the stock software or the newest version of android in the easiest may possible as know next to nothin on this stuff and very little about pc software, I would much rather just have the stock setup and not have to learn how to load stuff through twrp, root , etc Just need basic functionality. The main things that I do not like about the twrp being installd and the boot load being unlocked is that it will not update and constatntly comes up with reminders for updates, also I cannot open anything i google that is an ad or top listing(guess it is sometype of ad blocking) I am really sick of clicking on stuff at the top of google searches and having it not load. Please help I like this phone, but I am ready to take a hammer to it. thdx

Probably you still have twrp recovery.
Power off, vol - power, select recovery mode - power.
Into twrp - format data/factory reset, reboot.

It would be helpful if you could tell us which build version you are currently on. Go to "Settings", "About phone", and look for your Build Verson. This will let us know what options are available to you.

notsure if all that is needed. It does have the twrp installed and I really just want that off the phone and the stock software installed. I have no plans of learning the twrp, rooting, etc.
The phone also seems to run pretty hot and occasionaly the screen will bug out and look like it is going out, but is fine after I power cycle the phone.
Any further help is appreciated. THX

thx for the links. I do have twrp installed still, version 3.0.2-0, the home screen shows install, backup, mount, advanced, wipe, restore, settings, and reboot. If I click on reboot, then recovery it goes to the start screen(looks like dos mode with the graphic of an andriod guy ) from there if I press start it just starts up and from what I can tell it is all the same as before.
Really what I want is twrp off the phone, stock software, and be able to get OTA updates, etc in future. I have no desire to tinker with the software. thx

Don't remove twrp.
Reboot to twrp, wipe, do factory reset/format data. Reboot. @daleboot
Or flash the newest stock as in 1st link I gave.

Well, I think based on the information you gave with your Build Version and all, I think you can install the original firmware image to restore completely to stock. This is the only way to get back to stock to take future OTAs. Just so you know, as of this time, unless something has changed there is no OTA update available to Nougat for the Moto X Pure XT1575 US version.

[Q] Phone has no recovery and other issues.

First want to say hi and that this site is full of knowledge so any help with my subject will be great.
Got a att s4 sgh-i337 phone. I rooted it before the lollipop ota update was out and everything went fine. Then the lollipop update came out and I followed one of the methods on keeping root and updating to 5.0.1 lollipop on the phone. Everything went fine with that. Still showed root status and never did the phone brick or have any issues in the updating.
At some point though, I did run triangle away because I would have the custom logo and opened padlock when the phone would boot up. I knew it wasn't a huge deal but the counter showed correct and never could just figure out how to get it to go away. Either way, I did run it and I think rebooting twice, the factory loading image came back to it. Now it shows my current status as 0 for the counter and the binary is Official.
I have not tried to load any roms or nothing like this to the phone, just followed the instructions to give it root access so I could run a few different apps and adaway for when I listen to Spotify.
One day, I was trying to install a new version of Words with Friends and it failed because I think wwf was open, but I did go back and install it. For some reason now, my phone never notifies my with a wwf notification when somebody plays me. Every now and then, it might pop up when I restart the phone but that is it. I don't think facebook notifies me everytime also but was more worried about words with friends.
Searching google, it says to go into recovery mode and flash the cache of the phone there. I have done the cache memory in the phone but that has not fixed my problem. When trying to go to recovery, it never works, it would always show, recovery booting and then load the phone up as normal.
I have download quick boot and rom manager since they all have an option to boot into recovery rather than pressing the buttons but it always does the same thing. Reading the web though, it seemed like I needed to install a different recovery than the factory I guess, so using rom manager, I tried twrp and that didn't work so I installed ClockworldMod 6.0.4.7. Rom manager shows that as the current recovery method.
When I try to boot into recovery, it still shows that recovery is booting and then goes straight to loading the phone as it should normally.
Now though, every time I restart my phone, it says recovery is trying to boot but never does.
How do I fix my phone to be able to boot into recovery and it not try to boot every time it powers on. I have tried searching google but I just just can find an answer to my direct problem. I know how to hold the buttons and go to recovery but does not work, and I also know how to get to it from the different app programs(rom manager and quick boot) but they do not work either. It would be nice to get the wwf notifications to work properly again also.
If you need any information from my phone, please ask. Thanks for any help on my matter,
Charlie
Odin stock and start over.
Apparently, you are not aware that the boot loader is locked, preventing the installation of a custom kernel. You can not use twrp, or rom manager. Rom manager itself may cause issues.
I agree you should flash back to stock and start over to get a clean install. Hopefully, this will solve the issues with notifications as well. You can use the "[GUIDE]Odin to Stock, Updating, Rooting, and Installing Safestrap" by guut13 in the general forum for files and instructions.

Thanks for the replies guys, I really don't know a whole lot about rooting other than following instructions about it. I was unaware you could not use the twrp or cwr as a recovery. My recovery did not work before so that is why I was trying to install those. I knew you could not install custom roms but I did not know that you could not use rom manager to install custom recoveries.
I appreciate the help so far and I will look into that thread you mentioned. I haven't read it but will this take me back to stock lollipop 5.0.1 and I just reinstall apps or will I have to re-root the phone.
Charlie
please delete, sorry
Charlie
You have to go back to 4.4.4, to the nb1 base, root with towelroot, and then use the keeproot method to get back to 5.0.1 rooted. The instructions are in the guide, and also a link to the keeproot thread is there.
By the way, for future reference, questions, help and troubleshooting issues should go in the Q&A forum, not the general forum.
not having any luck
Ok guys,
I am trying to follow the guide but not having much luck.
I downloaded the I337UCUFNB1_4.4_Stock_Odin_tar and put it in the AP Odin file. I'm not sure if I should be using it or the other file named I337UCUFNB1_4.4_Rootable_Stock_Odin_tar to begin with. The instructions said to use the first one so that is the one I was trying to use.
After putting the first file in the AP slot of Odin and hitting start, it begins to try to do it's thing and then says it fails!
What do I do now? Am I doing something wrong or what because I'm trying to follow instructions but not having much luck.
Please help. Sorry for posting in the wrong area also in the beginning.
Charlie
I'm screwed
Now when I turn my phone on, it says Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again?
doing better now
Pretty sure I got it going finally. I changed cords and then changed ports on my computer and it finally did go back to stock without an error. I'm currently back on Lollipop and rooted so now is the fun of reinstalling contact info and anything else. So far I have not rebooted but it was not showing the recovery booting option when it did reboot. Hoping my notifications work properly now also!
Thanks!!!
Charlie

New OTA update today

Hey guys, thought I would make a discussion thread about the new update today for the Sprint S5's. Looks like todays update was just over 200 MB. I don't know if it affects the latest chainfire root yet or not.
But yeah, make your stock S5 search for a update and you should find one waiting.
I've noticed:
The Android Security Patch Level is now December 1, 2016
Software version is now G900PVPU3CPL2
Do we know how long Samsung will continue to update our phone OTA? I appreciate that we still have support. It's not so bad being 1 month behind in security updates since even with security updates we are still vulnerable to 0-day exploits anyway.
Does anyone have a copy or link to this update? I want to see if it helps with signal on nougat based roms.
Thanks in advance

The best way to actually try and get this is through Kies or SmartSwitch apps. Sam Mobile does not have this, and it would be, about another month from now, till they even have it... Been there too many times looking for this so call update.
I know that is does state 01dec2016 security update. I also know, that Knox is added to (at least, all Knox is added data (Kbs, not Mbs) I also believe, they (Samsung, tech side phone updates) have added more apps for Knox. However, we don't have anything that is related to these new updates. heck 2 of them, state they have DATA. Through the stock app manager, you have an option, to erase this, because it is not installed....
not sure if this helps you find what you are looking for. ...
( me 2cents on this),... Why extra apps and data../. Why do we have to download a complete new Stock Rom, when we already were stock anyway ???) (Me dog did a real number on the phone. had to be a good eBay and Amazon shopper... Completely rebuild my S5.
Wondering if the S5 will be having A real update, such as 7.1... ??? !!!) we S5, was not on or in the press release early this month, regard the Samsung, Android updates... 7.0, 7.1 NOUGAT !!!
I certainly believe that they will in time update the S5 to 71 Nougat
This may just be a hunch but I have a feeling that if the Note 8's don't blow peoples faces off that the S5 probably won't be seeing Nougat officially (from Sammy).
Well there's a new update today for me anyways. This one is just over 27 MB's. 2 new updates in one month!
The new software version is called G900PVPS3CQA2
New antutu score updated.
It's very unlikely that S5 will receive an official N OTA from any carrier(or any msm8974, for that matter) as Qualcomm had planned 'no official support' for msm8974 past M. It was already very late in the cycle for M, and may not have made it onto the list for M had the msm8994 sucked less.
Does anybody know if we are still able to root our phone model with this new update?

I don't know for sure myself, as I have not gotten the update bring on aftermarket firmware. But I would imagine if you flash twrp and apply the latest supersu, it should work. I know that's how I did it with the cpk1 update.
Someone please correct me if I am wrong. I don't want anyone bricking their device based on what I've said.

Yes.. I did
I ran into some issues and factory reset, deleted my Internal Storage, and then ODined PK1 Stock onto my Sprint S5. I then got a prompt that G900PVPU3CPL2 update was available. After the phone restarted I was then prompted to update to G900PVPS3CQA2 After that one installed and restarted.. I successfully rooted using CFAutoroot and then put the latest TWRP Recovery on.
Now.. what screwed me up is me trying to put a 7.1.1 Rom on (LOS and even Resurrection Remix). Phone froze and would not allow me to enter any info in or select Wifi. When it did.. I had ZERO signal/data. I then re-odined.. PK1.. without the updates, rooted, and Twrped, then flashed the 7.1.1 (LOS and RR) with no problems. Made back-ups of both (within TWRP) and was able to Restore all three at will. I am currently back on the STOCK/ROOTED w/all updates including the QA2.. as I didn't feel like doing the customization of the 7.1.1. Roms with the game (SuperBowl) getting ready to come on.
Personally I like the Stock- Rooted -Updated- Twrp config as the only thing that bothers me is the heading theme being that Samsung Aqua blue. If I could theme it.. I might stay with it

Thank you for the info!! This is what I wanted to hear!! Someone who had the newest update and then went into detail of what they encountered. Thank you again!! Much appreciated!!
You can always see the latest official stuff for our phones here: https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-G900P/SPR/
The only way we'll ever see Nougat on the S5 is via rom ports, or CM14/CM14.1 Official, which is supporting the S5.

No problem. After using the STOCK/ROOTED MM version with all the updates , I have decided that I really am just gonna stay on it. It is smooth, fast, and has all the things I need. I killed Bloatware so outside of the pull-down bar being aqua blue.. and background being white I'm very content.
Anyone know of an app for rooted phones that will allow me to rectify those things?

@cmicasa the Great, I keep getting a failed when using Odin, CFAutoroot, KingoRoot, KingRoot, and even when I try to use TWRP. I also read somewhere that I would have to unlock the Bootloader in order for this to work? Do you mind sending me a message in PM about how you did your rooting? If you don't mind sir. Thank you again for your time and assistance.

This is everything I did including putting PK1 on my phone, letting it then upgrade to G900PVPU3CPL2 and then update to G900PVPS3CQA2 After that one installed and restarted.. I proceeded to Root and put custom recovery on. Because U will not get the OTA updates once U root
Here are my steps Len:
1) First make sure U have the ODIN 3.10 or above> Links are here SamsungOdin or here Odin Download
2) Then go into Download Mode by pressing the "Volume down +home and then Power buttons" Once device boots hit the volume up button and Android dude should appear
3) open ODIN (I used 3.10) and plug phone to computer.
Load the PK1 tar in the PDA Slot, put your phone in Download Mode (power off, hold Vol Down, Home, and Power), and connect your phone to the PC. (I checked F.Reset and Auto Reboot)
Then after that is successful run CF Auto Root or whatever root injector you have in the PDA slot again. Once that finishes (wait until Odin tells you it was a Success before doing anything), get ROM Toolbox or something of that nature and remove any app with Knox in the title or that has the Knox symbol.
Load your phone into Download Mode one last time and then put whatever recovery you have (I use TWRP, make sure you grab the .tar format instead of the zip) and put that in the Bootloader slot in Odin. Then you're good to go, rooted and custom recovery, sky's the limit.
-I found a perfect site that does exactly what I did using CFAUTOROOT. It explains everything including TWRP

So just to clear, there is no need to unlock the Bootloader? Also, if my phone has a password, does it need to be disabled? I.e. lock security feature such as creating a pattern in order to unlock the device to use.

Rooting SM-S920L

Tracfone version
I'm having no luck with Kingroot. It says no root available for device.
According to 'one-click-root' website, the device has no way of rooting it.
Is there any updated information?
.
device specifics:
model: SM-S920LZAATFN
android: 5.0.2
build: LRX22G.S920LUDU1APK2
hardware version: S920L.03
.
[edit: was hoping to change the title to reflect that this post is about the tracfone version]
TWRP recovery method?
TWRP recovery method?
I've read that a phone may possibly be able to be rooted by using odin to download a TWRP recovery, then booting into that new recovery using hardware keys, instead of rebooting normally. And this results in a rooted phone?
I think I have seen a TWRP that may work with this phone. Any help is appreciated. I'd like to be able to update this thread to include a step by step approach to this and other versions of the same model 920.
I'll continue to post updates as I discover more information.
DIY time : crash course in brain surgery
Ok, so I've read a bit of stuff in the forums on the SM-S920L, mostly about the StraightTalk variant, which apparently uses the same system rom, though I'm not so sure.
At any rate, rather than just throw carp at the phone and hope it sticks, I'm going to teach myself how to do it all myself, a-z, 1,2,3... etc., starting with making stock images of the various components, for recovery purposes. Perhaps the phone can be used as a TracFone again someday, though I have no desire to do so, having already bought another for cheaper that even works better, though not as fancy, just newer.
So, I'll leave it here for now and just update the primary with new information as I discover it, starting with the extraction of the stock images, hopefully without goofing up the phone, lol.
This is an unpopular phone, at least for hackers. But it will be a good tool for expanding my knowledge.
Any help appreciated, such as, 'Is this even necessary? There are files here here and here that will do it all'.
(lol, nope... so far I've discovered there is no root option, kingroot no work, etc. There seems to be no posts with information specifically regarding the TracFone 'variant' of this model. It suggests that i can use the StraightTalk files for it, which may work, but there are many questionable unanswered problems.)

It suggests that i can use the StraightTalk files for it, which may work, but there are many questionable unanswered problems.)

Definitely don't use kingroot.
Do you have a laptop or pc? If so I can help you out. I have the same phone. Mine is straight talk, but it's sm-s920l a tracefone just through straight talk.

Ya I got the straight talk, I have been using king root but I totally bricked and wiped my phone on purpose because I wanted to start fresh and let it update. Having a problem though I used twrp and nuked all my ****, or so I thought. I'm trying to OTA update I'm currently on 5.0.2 and it's saying I have a system update and even after I checked everything to be deleted it still says error and one of my files is modified or some**** like that. I think it's like admin.prop so **** it. I do however want to go systemless root. What do you suggest is the best root and rom for our device?
To answer op question yes your phone is the same as ours. Mine even shows tracphone on boot.

Well for our phone there is only one custom ROM and it's LineageOS 13.0 https://forum.xda-developers.com/grand-prime/development/unofficial-cyanogenmod-13-0-galaxy-t3491494 It's android 6.0 and it can be rooted too. It's not being updated anymore for our device as far as I know. There is Lineage 14.* but not for our variant.
For systemless root you'll want to go with Magisk. https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445 I had Lineage, and don't get me wrong it's worth checking out, but I downgraded back to stock and went with Magisk. You can even get Xposed throughMagisk.
If I was you, I would flash back to stock. You can go to this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445 and download the first two, Stock Boot and Stock Recovery. Make sure to unzip them because you need the md5 files they extract. I'd wipe everything again and then get into download mode. On your PC fire up Odin, I'm using version 3.10 http://odindownload.com/download/clean/Odin_3.10.0.zip Click BL use the stick boot md5 and then under ap use the stock recovery md5. When it reboots and you set it up do not turn reactivation lock on.
If you don't already have Magisk on your sd card get it on there and install through twrp. It will ask if you want to root. Might make a back up after. I always make backups and then transfer from sd to my pc. I can restore to like 6 different versions of my phone right now lol I'm no expert, I haven't been messing around with all this for long so I hope that all makes sense. :fingers-crossed:

Haha ya it does I just wish they didn't treat our phone like it has Ebola or some****. All kinds of **** for the other ones. I agree on the magisk because I really want to try that out. Alright thanks for all the helpful links I come to this site to find **** for ours and I end up looking at a bunch of cool stuff I can't have.
I'm waiting on the pixel 2 XL before I upgrade. We just missing out on too much stuff. I think magisk will keep me busy in the meantime though. Thanks again man I'm Soo add once I get here on all the stuff then I wonder well will this work or this work and by then just like awwww **** it.

Hey, I thought I'd let you know LineageOS 14.1 is available to us now. I can't find a specific thread on it, but you can download it from http://grandprime.ddns.net/jenkins/job/LOS_Builds/# Flash it with twrp. You will want to flash that and then flash open gapps [ARM - 7.1] and then whichever from here http://opengapps.org/ I did all that first, set it up rebooted and then installed Magisk.
It has Substratum pre-installed and it let's you theme it nicely. There is only an unofficial xposed version so far.
Anywho, thought I'd throw that out there.
thanks for the replies, gives me inspiration to keep on trying; the phone is pretty ho-hum with default stuff and the general blah blah of social media, etc.;
thanks for the tips, feel free to post more details as they come in
My Turn
I'm about to try and put 14.1 and Magisk on mine. Wish me luck!
downloading twrp recovery and rooting
in google search up twrp click on the first link then click on devices on the top right corner then search up your phone download the twrp.img.tar file
power off your phone and press volume down + home button + power button to boot into download mode
in odin select AP then select the twrp.img.tar you downloaded then press start
your phone will reboot then download the SuperSU zip file
then go to settings then go to find my mobile you have to get a samsung account then you will see reactivation lock option turn that off
then power off your phone then press volume up + home button + power button to reboot into twrp recovery
once booted tap the install option then select where you downloaded the supersu zip file swipe to flash it once done flashing you will see the reboot system option to reboot your phone
then your phone should be rooted!

[HELP] I would like to go into developer options but I can not

Hello to all,
first of all sorry for my English, i'm using google translate, I do not know if you can help me here.
I bought this jewel from Gearbest and arrived yesterday.
I would like to unlock the bootloader and root it following this wonderful guide , but I can not get into developer options, I get the error "the settings application crashed abnormally"
I wanted to do this via the toolkit, but in EDL mode the phone is not recognized, maybe because in developer options I have to select the OEM UNLOCK.
The only good thing is that it recognizes usb debugging mode (at least I think) because I see the debug notification icon.
I can not understand where it came from, I went into bootloader mode but did not release me information.
From the onscreen screen I can only provide these info:
model number zte a2017g
version android 6.0.1
kernel version 3.18.20
build number zte a2017gv1.0.0b11
baseband version th.2.0.c1.9-00050-m8996faaaanazm
The MiFlavor version is 4.0
The smartphone does not receive OTA updates. I downloaded the global version (b05) of Nougat, the update with Android started I did not find it (I renamed the rom file in update.zip and put in the root of the SD CARD). I tried through recovery mode but it does not do anything to me, it's as if the smartphone was locked in everything and for everything.
I'm doing well ? How do I update when I download the rom? Can you please help me? Is there any system to interact with this smartphone and unlock it? I do not want to keep a phone that I can not update and root it.
Thanks in advance to who will help.
UPDATE:
I tried to manually install the downloaded ROM, but in recovery mode it does not flash the new rom ... the phone does not even try it !!!
It's as if the phone was locked in everything and I only have to keep the installed rom.
Some idea ?

Hey I would recommend clearing the data for settings if you can. To do this go to your launcher, find the settings icon and either drag or hold down or do whatever it takes to get to the app info. I haven't used stock in a long time so idk. But then go into storage and clear data. Then go and try again.
I do have one question though. How did you get usb adb debugging enabled if you didn't get into developer options at all?
For the second half of your question you won't be able to flash anything without first unlocking the bootloader and flashing TWRP onto the device. For the devices recovery idk which one you meant, but it needs to be TWRP. Good luck!

Thanks to my friend, without doing anything, suddenly, he made me enter the developer options menu.
I've been able to do the rest.
Now I have the phone with unlocked bootloader, root and TWRP installed.
Do not ask me how I got the debug without going into the menu, I could not answer you ... it will remain a mystery !!!
I take advantage of your availability: can I flash the zip of the official ROM through TWRP? Or is there a risk that the phone goes into brick mode?

What rom are you trying to install? Usually you will be absolutely fine.

You can't flash an official zip through TWRP, it will just fail. No brick.
Edit: didn't read OP lol. If you want to update, you have to flash the stock recovery (there are stock recovery flashable zips on the Download Center) then install the update, then get TWRP again. Or you can install a custom ROM (I recommend one based on stock MiFavor 5.0, I think that the best one is ADM Team V3 (the one that's not based on B13), this way you can simply download, flash in TWRP, and you'll be done

Thanks mate !!
I installed the rom that you suggested to me, I find it very good, but this phone has very poor support (MiFavor).

Very poor support? It's going to get Android O, and it's got at least 1 update per month (officially). It's unclear whether that ROM you installed will be updated since it's based on an older version, but the latest (B13) breaks a bunch of stuff like Google Play Games, Maps, the GPS works awfully...

No no ... do not get me wrong.
My reference is to rom, MiFlavor is really bad. I come from 3 Xiaomi smartphones and I can assure you is another world.
The smartphone is really nice and well balanced (apart from the just enough battery) and I would replenish it a thousand times. :fingers-crossed::good:

Pulling User Data in Recovery from a Galaxy S7 w/ Stock Everything

My phone suddenly had a momentary display malfunction (some of the text on the screen just turned into garbled pixels) and then entered into a boot loop. I didn't make any changes or updates to the phone recently. It no longer boots normally - just the Samsung logo and some of the Verizon logo animation, then it reboots and starts again. How do I pull my user data off (photos mainly) before trying a factory reset? The phone is totally stock. I haven't unlocked it, rooted it, or installed any custom recovery/ROM/bootloader/whatever. (I sound like I don't know what I'm talking about because I don't, haha.) The touchscreen is fully functional. I'm sure this has been covered here before, but I haven't found anything that totally explains how to do this in this particular situation, so I'd really appreciate any help anyone can provide.
The only time I can get the phone to show up under adb devices is when I boot it in recovery mode and select "Apply update from ADB". But it says "sideload" next to it in adb devices, and the push, pull, and shell commands return errors. I've read that this is normal. Wiping the cache partition didn't solve the boot loop problem.
If it helps, this is what the top of the recovery screen displays:
Android Recovery
Verizon/heroqltevzw/heroqltevzw
8.0.0/R16NW/G930VVRSBCTC1
user/release-keys
I'm no Android expert, clearly. I've heard it mentioned that I need to install a custom recovery in order for this to be possible. To be clear, I want to make sure I don't erase the user data before I have a chance to pull it off the phone. These are the questions that I still have after reading information elsewhere (some of which I'm just asking out of an abundance of caution):
Is it correct that I need to install a custom recovery before I can pull this data off the phone?
Do I need to have it unlocked/rooted/anything else in order to be able to install a custom recovery? Or is there anything else I should do before installing it?
Which custom recovery should I install?
Do I need a custom ROM, if that's a different thing?
Do I need a custom...bootloader, if that's also a different thing?
Should I use Odin or Samsung Smart Switch to install the custom recovery?
(Extra credit: Does it sound from my description of how the boot loop started that this phone has hardware problems and should be replaced ASAP?)
Thank you so much for any help you can provide! Any extra information beyond my questions will be very much appreciated, too, of course. You guys never cease to impress.
You have a B version bootloader like me, and so far no root/custom recovery has been made for our versions of bootloaders. If I were you, I would check if you had maybe like a previous backup, and if Google made an automatic backup of your apps and photos? If you didn't use a 3rd party backup, and if you don't want to wait, you might lose some files. I also think you might be able to flash a certain part of stock firmware to get your phone to boot again, but I'm not sure
Also, if you don't care about files that can't be get through automatic backups, might as well flash a whole stock firmware, which as far as I know, may be the easiest way to get out of one.
Please correct me if I'm wrong
Also to answer your bullet points:
1. I'm not sure if you need a custom recovery, but from my experience from a Verizon s5, that's probably a yes.
2. Since this is Verizon, you would need to unlock your bootloader in order to install a custom recovery, which in where I posted my first reply, the B version of the bootloader is still locked down without any known way to unlock it. You and me are stuck with this, as I also have the B version.
3. If the heavens line up and you somehow unlock the bootloader, try to flash a recovery Called TWRP under the name "Herolqte" (that's what I think). If that doesn't work, try to find one that works with the phone on XDA. If neither of those show up try to use another custom recovery like CWM.
4. If your trying to recover data on a phone, flashing a custom ROM is probably the last thing you want to do. A custom ROM is a modified version of Android, which may mean you'll have to format your device anyways so this is probably not what you want (even though it would be nice :[ )
5. As in post 2, all you would need to get a custom recovery is to unlock the bootloader. I'm not even sure if you CAN get a custom bootloader, as Odin won't even let me flash a stock bootloader to my phone that is the same exact Version >:[
6. You would need to use Odin if you were trying to flash something to your phone. Smart switch I think WOULD let you back up your device, but you would need to be on the home screen on your phone, which in turn, would probably need you to be out of that bootloop.
7. This is probably a software issue. If you don't care to much about the idea, try flashing some parts of a stock firmware. I was personally in a boot loop 2 days ago, but I flash a stock modem file (I think that was the second file slot from the bottom in Oden) and that got me out, but for some reason wiped my phone clean, and I'm not sure why.
Anyways. Goodluck in recovering your data. Also I'm not sure if a factory reset would even fix a boot loop
