.... What ?
This is a rom i put together as a daily driver. But which has slowly grown into a project.
It is now indeed a stable daily driver, exceeding my initial expectations considerably, everything works ( well ! ) , the Antutu Benchmarks show it to be the fastest benchmarked t705 in xda.
Do not be fooled by its TW base, there is very little left of the ( quite literally ) hundreds of Sec utils, just the stuff you need.
Each system component of Fenris has been scrutinized as regards memory usage and cpu cycles ( well as much scrutiny as the massively complex memory management of modern android allows ) , anything not meeting my expectations has been replaced or removed.
.... XDA Edition ?
Fenris has 2 editions
a) Fenris standard , concentrating on penetration and just as importantly defense from penetration !!
b) Fenris XDA , concentrating on defense from penetration.
As time goes by and my experience of the very very black professional ha**er scene increases i will be building frontline defences against the worst exploits commonly used, directly into Fenris.
Since a lot of the source ( all of the base source ) comes from the good people on this site i have felt compelled to share.
Fenris standard is obviously not hosted on XDA.
.... Trust
Modifications and patches will be logged in a github page for public scrutiny, but at the end of the day unless your a C++/Java coder one has zero idea if some tiny code change is actually malicious.
Its a matter of trust, ultimately i have to trust the patches and defenses i include into Fenris ( obviously i scrutinize what i can ), and i have to trust the Samsung propriety code. If you want to use Fenris, you have to trust me lol.
.... Base
Android Version …. 6.01
Base…. https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-tabs/SM-T705/TGY/download/T705ZHU1CQB1/124107/
Build Date …. Mon, 13 Feb 2017 06:03:11 +0000
Modem…. T705ZHU1CQB1
........ Features
Stripped to the bone of Samsung crapware
AOSP Launcher 3
Hackers Keyboard ( English dictionary ) ( Samsung keyboard had a bug )
Floating window and multiwindow
Supersu preinstalled into /system
Xposed preinstalled into /system
BusyBox preinstalled
Huge number of Android naitive compiled binaries ( Bash nano and many more )
Preinstalled and working microg ( open source gapps alternative )
Preinstalled , and pre-researched Xposed modules, System tools.
Custom kernel, selinux permissive, Samsung configs removed.
Old style installer, make system changes easily without having to extract images
.... Why ?
I am a lifelong AOSP user ( in various incarnations CM, Vanir,AICP etc on various devices ) and would normally be using Vanir on this device, but the fingerprint and text situation of CM13 has finally stopped me ( when I realised I actually liked having a fingerprint sensor ).
Firmly stuck with a TouchWizz ( TW ) base I resolved to strip the stock image down to the very bone, in an effort to somehow mimic the streamlined performance of Vanir.
My interests include Pentesting and Linux in general, so this Rom had to be compatible with both
.... Design
There is always a trade-off in any system between functionality and resource usage ( in this case ram and cpu cycles ), i am firmly on the resource side .
I believe the function of an OS is to better facilitate the running of programs , NOT to replace the programs with OS native attempts at the same.
Given that this ROM is all about minimizing cpu and ram usage , while at the same time keeping core functionality ( at this point have to admit i kept a few processes that have nothing to do with core functions , i just found then extremely cool ).
The target was to approach the cpu/ram usage of a similar cm13 build, i feel that has been achieved, Fenris runs with approx 15% greater resource usage ( than a cm13 build ). I think it would be very difficult if not impossible to get any nearer to AOSP/CM performance , and keep the cool stuff.
.... Keeping processes in check
There is little point in all this optimization effort on the OS if along comes a badly written program to ruin the whole show, normally this is in the hands of the user , but when it comes to gapps its not in the hands of the user..
Google play services can be considered a system component, the APIs it presents, are required for quite a few of the apps i like. And as such its resource usage must be considered ..
GMS started off ( around v4..xxx to 5..xxx when i started tracking it ) with heavy but acceptable resource usage, it was also to a degree customisable by disabling services and receivers.
By v11..xxxx it had grown by about 50% both in ram and cpu usage. So what to do ?
https://microg.org is the answer in this case
And is fully implemented into Fenris, more importantly it works at a tiny fraction of the resource usage of GMS and associated components.
Its such a vital project that i would ask anyone using Fenris for their own benefit to donate or contribute to https://microg.org
.... Linux
I use linux a lot and always like to have a bash terminal handy, so I imported bash from Vanir CM13 build, nano also from the same, SSH plus a bag of others ( thanks nanomod ) All are native and work within the android directory hierarchy.
.... User pre install configuration
Fenris is packaged oldschool style , and is totally open for a user to modify as required without having to extract and repack a sparse image,
Just open up the archive and modify the contents of the system directory as required, the installer script will cope with additions and deletions for the most part.
.......In development
Frontline R.A.T protection , specificaly against AndroRAT and clones.
"Remote administration tool : A RAT or remote administration tool, is software that gives a person full control a technical device, remotely. The RAT gives the user access to your system, just as if they had physical access to your device. With this access, the person can access your files, use your camera, and even turn on/off your device. Once the RAT is installed on your device, the hacker can wreak havoc. They could steal your sensitive information, block your keyboard so you can’t type, install other malware, and even render your devices useless. A well-designed RAT will allow the hacker the ability to do anything that they could do with physical access to the device."
This is one of the primary attack methods employed today, they DO NOT NEED ROOT ,seem to be immune to permissions, and SELinux
, most use some metaspoilt attack.
The normal method of deployment is through a smali decompiled apk, which is then injected with a payload, but not at all the only method.
Soon i hope to understand the explot and suitably imunise Fenris, thus if one is picked up, it can do nothing.
Update>.......... Done, Fenrisis immune to Androrat and clones, included firewall and code updates have seen to this issue.
APK checking..........
There are a number of online APK malware checkers, that run your apk through a number of anti-virus anti-malware engines ang give a comprehensive results service, all for free, Fenris should take advantage of this in some point-and-click manner.
Update>........ looking to create a simple app to do this
Security updates.
Samsung does not push security updates for this device
https://security.samsungmobile.com/etc/qsmr_list.html
Which is a real problem, am doing best to make fenris an exception to this.

Yes, but to do it right will need an original most recent t700 samsung image, sammobile takes forever.
Plus cant test since have a t705, and althogh there should be zero problems applying the changes, you never know without exhaustive testing.
In short will require some demand, if enough guys ask , and someone is willing to beta test, then yes.
I assume your talking about the XDA eddition ? There are zero plans for Fenris standard to migrate devices.

Thank you very much !
If you find any issues please post here, and i will fix them..
Fenris ( both versions ) will be maintained for the life of my device ,which i hope is a very long time lol..
Unlike other projects i am not concentrating on the newest android release, instead continualy improving Fenris features and squashing bugs.
I will only move to Android 7 when forced to by the weight of upstream code.
Only 1 question:
I have set up everything accordingly. However, when I start my Google now, it says that the account has already been used on the device and thus cannot be re-added (!!!).
Thus, if I really need Google services, do I need to rely on Gapps instead of MicroG?
Other than that, the rom has been incredible. It even makes my S6 seem sluggish next to it! Well done, lad! Thank you so much for your time, effort and sharing!

Actually not sure about google now, its not the sort of thing i ever use. i think microg has issues with some gapps apks , its by no means a complete replacement , and nor should it be, its there to provide minimum coverage at a tiny fraction of the resources that monster GMS uses.
If its a big thing for you i think there could be a patched_to_run_with_microg version out there somewhere, post a list of those you cant live without, that do not run, and i will see if i can source working versions.
Microg conflics with gapps, and the gapps installer has no idea about microg, just flashing gapps on top of Fenris would produce some interesting results. Prob not good..
Fenris up to v15 did use a gapps version, but the effort needed to tame the monster caused me to use very extream hacks , it was not fun ! Just preventing self update is a herculean effort.
Plus a significant part of gapps is google spyware, and those apks break the 7th law of Fenris. ( well Fenris standard anyway )

Thanks mate,
The good people here are responsible for the majority of Fenris base system , so I felt compelled to share, its the only fair thing to do.
Unfortunately XDA rules preclude me sharing Fenris standard, which is understandable but a shame non the less, since that's something special : )

I see! I knew that Google services can be a massive hog (hence many people have switched to AOSP with no Google framework installed at all), however, this was the first time I had ever heard of MicroG and its aims.
I use Google now to ... search for installed apps, contacts etc on my tablet as there isn't much Samsung services left here. But well, I can only ask for so much. You spending your time and effort giving me something that has complete revamped my once-a-hopeless device is already a precious gift.
Again, thank you so much!
can you please pm me fenris standard edition link

Ah I see
The launcher used (aosp launcher) has a search bar for apps, in the apps page, it should be enabled as standard.
Long press on homescreen, then the 3 dots, to access launcher settings.
Also you set the desktop wallpaper through launcher, lockscreen wallpaper can still be set through gallery.
I think contacts has search built in, ( not at all sure since I have all of 5 contacts , never needed search lol lol)
V19 is coming tomorrow sometime , it fixes keyboard spell check, and includes secure encrypted SMS, maybe firewall if it makes it by deadline.
I'm really glad your enjoying Fenris, I am actually in the same boat, I'm loving it, after a year of unstable cm/aosp ( the L versions had all sort of bugs) its a breath of fresh air ( damn should I be bigging up my own stuff ?? Lol )
This one is the most stable and fluid ROM i have ever used in this device with minimal to no issue at all.
thanks for your work man.
so far i had no issues with this ROM.
Thanks man
It would be great if you could provide a flashable MicroG uninstaller or at least a list of files to be deleted should anyone prefer to use Gapps instead of MicroG. Thanks, @vecna
I have to say running full gapps is privacy suicide, and it firmly breaks many of the guiding principals of Fenris design. Since microg works so surprising well ( given that they had to reverse engineer most of gapps, its an astounding achievement ) it seems a no brainier to keep it as it is.
Also coming releases feature additions like abbility to route all Google server requests through tor, and advanced firewall with rules for extream stealth mode, all of which will not work if running gapps.
Your request though is ( unfortunately. ) covered by the first law of fenris.
"The Fenris user is God to their own device, the os is there to make that happen"
If God wishes to destroy his privacy slow his tablet and reduce battery life then so be it, that's the law lol.
I will put the list of files and dirs to delete on initial post, its easiest simply to delete them from the zip on any PC before flashing, ( remember Fenris is fully open to modification as its packaged old school, this is very deliberate, I could easily have worked with and delivered a sparse image but that's really just a way of discouraging users to mess with their systems) or with twrp file manager prior to gapps zip.
Will do it after I publish v19, which is uploading now.
Thanks, @vecna. I would love to have Fenris as it is, if some GPS-dependent apps that I used can work. Thus, I will settle with freezing playstore and other unneeded gapps.
I am interested in this! What do i need to do other than flash a kernel for the T700? It there a line of text that needs to be removed?
TIA

Looks Awesome but looks can bediceving I am definitly trying this one!

This rom rocks! But uses to much ram:9
GOOD WORK
Hi bro...
Xperience light sensor has had a few bugs, It has now been re-worked & I've been testing for a few days now & all is good...
The difference between this rom & the full fat version is the full fat version has all apps unlocked to "Full" status... XDA Rules prevent us from doing this with our "Lite" release... Also, Full Fat version has all apps & Candy including little used system apps... "Lite" version keeps all candy but gets rid of useless, little used apps to maintain speed & stability...
Hope this helps to explain the differences between the two versions...

finally wait is over. will definately flash this one ;-)
that music app is available in the market right? correct me if i'm wrong. cause I'm pretty sure I downloaded that kind of music player from the market a plenty of months ago. its where you can just use the proximity "wave your hand in front of your phone" to activate the next feature of the music player. or even just tap your phone a bit hard or even shake to again activate the next feature.
i'm not here to make war. i'm just making sure there's no warez in it.
awesome rom tho. looks promising.
any reviews for this rom? will wait cause if there are bugs i wont flash. i hate flashing then restoring then blah blah. But still love the concept though ~

I have found that custom ROMS/Kernels and much else for this phone to be sorely lacking. This is by no means an attack on my respected dev peers, simply an observation.
Throughout the woes of our limited forums I see a trend in the gripes about this little wonder.
I am offering my personal settings & preferences that MAY unleash what we can do here.
FIRST THINGS FIRST- Just forget needing buggy builds of TWRP for KK+ rom flashing. There's not much to flash, and TWRP 2.7.1.0 forced me to dl the KK stock firmware & start from square zero.
*NOTE FOR REASONS STILL UNKNOWN EVERY SINGLE PARTITION WOULD RESTORE- EXCEPT THE SYSTEM.
Enough said.
I am using CWM 6.0.2 for stability reasons, and have no issues.
Now I will begin the good stuff.
After my mods/tweaks etc, I am running about 97 apps with 3.9GB internal memory remaining, can go about 11hrs without needing to charge, give or take, and can multitask seemlessly with around 410mb free RAM at stationary.
Obviously, one needs to utilise the KK SD card fix. After this, begin:
Install /system/app/mover from Play Store & BE CAREFUL!!
I proceeded to begin moving bloatware preinstalled apps from being system apps to User apps, freeing essential system rom space & allowing for safe uninstall and transfer to ext sd.
Now on to build.prop.
Unleash what we can do here.
Here is the link to my build.prop zip. Please note all mods & adds specifically, as they are unique to the likings of this phone.
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B-a-fg6mIteHakZfYXk1eklla3M/edit?usp=docslist_api
Next, I HIGHLY suggest the Override DNS for KitKat. Only one that works for 4.4 & above. Set to Google, which is also feasable in bud.prop, but my experience has been iffy with that, and this app flushes DNS cache w/o reboot and sets DNS KitKat specific.
GPS- FasterGPS.
Here is the link to the Advanced Settings data after basic configuration. The results speak for themselves.
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B-a-fg6mIteHellndldvUG5Eb1k/edit?usp=docslist_api
Dl and rename to .txt to view.
I use RAM Manager Pro for memcleaning & management.
Use default option, the select custom afterwards to fine tune settings to preference.
If ANYONE needs recovery files for any soft brick needs AND has CWM, please PM me & I will upload mine.
Hope this gives some insight on how to begin using this guy properly.
Open forum. Ask/request away, add to it please!

Unjustified Dev is working on CM12 for this phone, but he's pretty much the only one. Whether you team up with him or you work independently, it'll certainly be good to have more people working on this phone. Bummer you had to lose your other devices though.
A different route
Hey all, thanx for the attention & activity in getting this thread moving.
I readily & always tell all I am not a Dev, I assist true devs here & there to work towards
stables, patches, fixing kernels, and so on.
That's out of the way, now on to the progress.
I have been using an AOSP deodexed stock 4.4.2 ROM, and praises to the efforts of
the community member, and much to my discredit I can't readily recall who this person
is to post a link to that thread, as is proper. oh well.
While the AOSP stock build is a big showing of progress, I say with a heavy heart that
it is very, very buggy.
What the positive effort was: It is debloated to such a level that upon a fresh install,
the user still has 4.2GB Internal Storage.
This, I've found, is the single most common misdirected goal and focus of efforts with
throw-away-yet-kinda-quality nocontract phone.
After I installed TB Premium, I discovered that the system ROM had around 182Mb available.
I now come to reports.
Every Stock 4.4.2 system app was still there, however the writer replaced a few (ie Camera
with Google Camera, for one) that completely eat up what precious limited RAM/
ROM performance we do have.
The build.prop showed only a few mods/edits, less than five.
The dalvik.vm.heapsize was 128m, heapstart was 8m, and growth limit 256mb.
That was same as stock. Speaking only for me, that was the biggest oversight that
tainted almost all efforts. Those sizes are entirely TOO big for this phone's britches.
If I seem like I just will not stfu, I can't blame you.
I feel I have to be as thorough as possible out of respect for my colleagues.
Now, since I am using Chrome from my device for all of this, you all will find up look oads
and images following this reply, fyi.
My first inspection was to install SetCPU, in small hopes that a customized kernel
had magically came. I am BEGGING for more governors and I/O schedulers, our less-than-
primitive 5/3 is downright insulting.
Kernel supports absolutely no tweaks, VM swap, O/C or min freq. U/C.
My goal is to take the only alternative given on 4.4.2 at all, and make lemonade.
System/app mover from Play Store.
There are countless threads on what is & isn't safe, my mods on that are my prefs.
In the end, I was able to free ROM up to just over 406MB. I can't begin to describe
the difference.
On to build.prop
To compliment my new device I just got, I set dalvik.vm sizes to a less audacious level.
I chose the more conservative of 8m, 64m, 128m. *Note any less on any 3 values, your FCs
will never cease.
Next, I made a few other edits I've favored on several devices, will upload my .txt.
Use of SD Fix for KitKat, along with Force2SD paid, I have 104 apps, many being very large
games, as well as the evil Chrome and FB storage rapists, all Google offenders at that.
I have a smug 4.32 GB Internal Storage available, saving me much embarassment by killing all my ROM wins.
AdAway 2.9 for KitKat, Override DNS for Root Users, the ONLY DNS mod that works on
KitKat, FasterGPS, Seeder 2.0, Root Explorer paid, TB Pro, NG Cache Cleaner, SignalGuardPro
and SD Booster make up my arsenal.
Touchwiz & Trebuchet are gone, I use Nova Launcher Premium.
Restoring TB app backups from external SD put my phone into bootloop.
I am clueless as to any reason why.
Using ANY root sysApp delete to debloat will also softbrick.
System/App Mover seems to be the only way. I speak from a few experiences and Nandroid
system part. restores.
I COMPLETELY CONDEMN MY PRIOR CONVICTION TO CWM.
I completely f*"$ed that up.
TWRP 2.8.0
NOTHING ELSE.
I even attempted a rash Aroma Installer to compensate for MusicFX being gone.
Ac!D Sound Mod.
Worked. And Improved.
RAM Manager Pro is gone too. I've found my build.prop edits are just right.
Any app tweak mucks it up.
Battery Callibrate Root, free on Store. Another win on battery life.
This is the most I can really do now.
Without a custom kernel, we'll be left behind like nearly all Prepaids, non flagships.
That's MY report, I beg for input/feedback/comments/criticism/ridicule, whatever.
Next Replies will be build.prop.txt, gps.conf, screenshots.

DISREGARD BUILD.PROP UPLOAD FROM PREVIOUS.
I missed some critical errors & edits that will negatively impact the phones performance and memory allocation, dang my bad all!
I've been at this phone non stop it seems since my previous post. Need to be less trigger-happy with reporting progress smh.
I'm uploading what I promise is my finished build.prop, for real this time.
Since I am sticking with this stock AOSP build, I was able to successfully flash an Aroma recovery installer mod, the Ac!d Sound Engine.
I should note that the only EQ offered that will work is Nooxide. Awesome Beats EQ is not designed for 4.4 platform.
The Ac!d enhancement and Dolby Mod both have made positive enhancements.
The Play Store that is built in to the .zip install MUST be replaced. Initially the writer included that Play Store will FC upon install, but clearing cache/data in app manager would fix, and was correct.
I can't assume that I'm the only one who has caught this, but I am reposting in writer's thread that Play Store will update to 5.4 build, and it becomes all but unusable.
Any Play Store update beyond 5.2... has never functioned properly for me, it seems Google is making a path for Lollipop migration, and the Play Store versions 5.3 and above are, I believe, geared for 5.0 platform, but still giving it to 4.4 users.
I downloaded a Play Store 5.2 apk from a third party site, saved to my external.
What I now believe is the present solution to this situation is this;
Get 5.2.** apk, keep it on External, or readily available.
Get System/app mover
Root Explorer
After flashing, use System/app mover, and convert Play Store from system to user app.
Reboot. Uninstall Play Store as regular user app. Install 5.2.** apk. open System/app mover & convert Play Store to system app. Hit "cancel" on reboot prompt in app. Go to app manager, Google Play Services, clear cache and ALL data under "Manage Storage". Then reboot.
This has fixed, for good, my issues.
As stated before, use System/app mover at your own discretion and what is your preference, just make a backup first and understand what you are doing.
I am satisfied with what I've worked out, and do not have any other work to do that I can see.
Thanks all.
Next reply is RIGHT build.prop
apologies again.

Update- have recently corrected setting dalvik heapsize and limit to lower settings, causes many MANY problems, fc's etc.
Set to 8m, 64m, 256m.
Absolutely primed.
Further system mods gave me 433Mb free ROM space, and around 4.1Gb internal storage free.
Happy thus far.
If anyone is keeping up on CM12 build, share to this forum please.
I wish to aid the dev in any way possible.

I am using the CM12 build and its pretty good. If you havent tried it yourself you should its pretty stable. I do like to see that you are working on the stock rom though. I like that one too just too much bloatware and not enough free space, so this is good!
I've tried keeping tabs on that here & there, can't seem to find dl link for latest/stable build. I've given up on this stock ASOP, just flashed back to stock 4.4.2. Added all those mods I've been posting, runs 110% better.
Would you be so kind as to point me the right way to dl this CM12? I'm looking again, but it would help a lot lol.
Ty for your participation.

Thanks
Ty I actually found it shortly after I requested that from you.
Been running it since then, a LOT of trial-and-error runs, but I've
managed to get it running just right for me, almost...
Fixed constant soft reboots by setting location to device only
Have no issues at all with phone calls, only the persistent
proximity during a call, I must position my phone a certain way,
my cheek kept touching the speaker and mute icons.
Any advice on that is welcome, I've tried the build.prop edit:
ro.lge.proximity. delay=25
mot.proximity.delay=25
without much luck lol.
And, the MMS issue. I'm on MetroPCS, so I have set the default
APN accordingly.
After researching CM Mod forums & searches, the only
solution anyone has ever provided is to use third-party SMS,
Textra was the specific example.
It seems to be arbitrary, I've had continuous successful deliveries,
then shortly after they fail every time..rebooting has AND has
not fixed this...too random of success/failures to pinpoint myself,
but I by no means am a master at this ☺.
Any help or ideas are most welcome!
Did you clean install? I set my APN to metro fast or whatever its called and have had no problems with texting. The only issues I have other than the proximity that you mentioned, is that videos don't always play. Plus the newest Netflix doesn't work and neither does play TV and movies. Both force close when I try to open
Sent from my SGH-T399N using XDA Free mobile app
Yeah when I had cm12 installed I had no problems with mms after changing the apn to metropcs lte or whatever it's called.
Well, I've since returned to Stock KitKat w/ root & modifications. The Cm12 was nifty at first, but in the end I desire functionality over custom.
Too many apps/features that I want & use often just didn't work unfortunately. Oh well, I'm still willing to pitch in & help out devs!
Maybe you could help develop the cm12 rom. Unjust lent his galaxy light out, and idk if he got it back yet

Hello I am new to custom roms
I am working with a Samsung Galaxy S5 G900W8 as a platform for learning
Can the experts here recommend some custom roms
I finally got one to work - however it seems to be for the TMobile version
The install worked - yet without wifi support
If people here please suggest a number of options to work through
I'm on the same phone as you. LineageOS works. I'm using Ressurection remix latest build KLTE. The KLTE bit is what you want for the roms. There are others I've tried but I end up back with the two I mentioned as they offer more functionality. Those are nougat. Tipsy Rom 6.0.1 works if you want marshmallow. So does the RR marshmallow rom. I've got twrp custom recovery installed. And magisk for root. Super user works as well but you won't pass safety net. So use magisk if you use android pay or play Pokemon go.
---------- Post added at 07:05 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:03 PM ----------
Do the custom recovery first if you haven't already. I assume you have because you flashed a rom. If you are using Odin to flash them you are probably flashing stock. Don't do that. Not unless it's the stock for your device and you don't want to be on a custom rom
---------- Post added at 07:14 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:05 PM ----------
You will need Odin to flash the recovery. You can root from the custom recovery. And you will flash roms from the custom recovery on the device.
https://twrp.me/devices/samsunggalaxys5qualcomm.html
This will give you the files and info you need to use Odin to flash twrp. Lineage and RR have their own sites as well. Super easy to find. Just remember the KLTE. Download the rom right onto the device or put it on the SD card. Boot into recovery using power, home and volume up and go to the directory with the rom zip, select it and swipe to install. Don't dirty flash the rom, wipe the phone first. It will not delete the custom recovery. Once the rom is installed reboot. It will take a few minutes to load. You flash the superuser or magisk zip from the recovery as well. If you do superuser download the app from playing store. Magisk you can find on xda. After all that you are rooted and on a custom rom.
---------- Post added at 07:15 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:14 PM ----------
You can use the recovery to create a backup of your phone too. Usually I'd recommend this but you already flashed a rom that's not working right anyway.

I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S5 (Telus Canada SM-G900W8), and given the lack of support I'm looking at a custom ROM.
Can someone please tell me if any of the above ROMs are getting good security patches?
I believe that there are mitigation patches for the Krack WiFi and BlueBorne Bluetooth Vulnerabilities that were recently disclosed., but most phones will take a long time to get them, if ever.
Any suggestions/input is much appreciated.

Thanks Vortell for the reply, that article is very helpful. Based on your response I think I'll give crDroid a shot.
(Just curious - are you using an SM-G900W8?)
crDroid was on my radar, but when I went to the crDroid web site, and it didn't list the S5/SM-G900x as an officially supported device. I see from the link you provided below references to an up to date S5 crDroid ROM, so it looks like this should be a good mainstream choice.
Other than surfing through tons of (sometimes great and sometimes terrible) YouTube vids any suggestions as to a quick way for me to speed on the mainstream ROMs? Do I need to consider anything beyond LOS, RR and crDroid?
I don't know if something like it is baked in, but from what I've been reading I need to install something like Xposed/XPrivacy. Way too many apps ask for access to identiy, contacts, location and device control that they don't need for me to use the app, and that I don't want them to have. Denying permission is no good, because then the app will die. Other than Xposed/XPrivacy should I be looking at anything else?
My priorities are Security, Stability, Usability, and then Features and Speed. Don't need/want bleeding edge, and it things are working, I likely won't update unless there is a vulnerability that needs patching or a really killer feature I want/need.
Vortell said:
Since both are built off of LOS source code they use should be patched. Also you can make any kltevzw build work with your w8 with right changes to build prop and APN. If my memory serves me right. I think it has all been integrated and built into LOS for a long while though.

Any suggestions as to how I can do this since I'm just a Noob without sufficient permissions to post in that forum?
(Just in case someone from the crDroid project sees it: Props on the really nice "banner page" ( https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/unified-development/rom-crdroid-t2860894 ) - very helpful. Suggestions: It would be helpful if there was a line about security/patches as well as a way for a user to quickly get up to speed on changes to know if they need to update. )
Thanks again/in advance for any comment, suggestions, or assistance
Vortell said:
Speed on mainstream rom? If you ment speed up, then there is only tuning the kernel or changing it. There is very limited support for extra kernels now. I think there might be a couple but you need to make sure they are compatible with los. You can also adjust the performance with kernel auditor. Lspeed it's another mod that had options like that. There maybe a bit more but once I got on crdroid my performance was fine. There other thing you can do is try to find updated drivers for the video card.

Sorry, I guess there was a typo (or auto correction gone wild) I meant to say how can I get up to speed (meaning become informed) as to the differences between the major mainstream ROMs. As I said, as long as it's useable stability/security is much more important than speed. Thanks for the detailed info anyway.

If you want paranoid level of control xprivacy is good otherwise privacy guard baked into all there if those is pretty damn good. Honestly if you don't have a Sunset device and are concedering using xprivacy for extra protection then you should really use gapps alternative. I forgot the frameworks name. It uses open scource and privacy minded services to avoid Google tracking. Then should only use simple app stores like xda or f-droid which has something called yalp if you want free stuff from Google. Otherwise privacy guard which will limit access to the things you mentioned is baked into all three you just have to turn it on in each. Crdroid has adaway built in if you add extra lists it really cuts down on ads. I also like viper4arise mod so I can increase volumes on my phone and change sounds processing on the fly. Then for the s5 there are volumes boast mods specifically because the mic is quiet.

These are great - thanks. I run a pfSense firewall, and I use some of these on it. One question... is it possible to override list entries either temporary or permanently? I know I've had problems with my firewall breaking certain web pages. It's a real problem on those rare occasions when I really need access to a broken page. I put up with it because ad networks have been a vector for malware recently.

As for exposed it's great and all but can lead to problems with substratum. It does work great with Crdroid and substratum for me using:bubble upnp, gravitybox. It didn't work though with rr on my note 4 with substratum. Someone reported it worked fine without substratum. Honestly the only reason I like it past what is baked into Crdroid though is to change status bar text colors. Rr allows a bit more statusbar customization to begin with though. I have also read rr is some what problematic on s5. It will however be very hard to get Android pay working on anything but touch wiz based 6.0.1 rom FYI because of safetynet. There is also was to get shealth working but that is very privacy invasive. Crdroid has g+ page if you want you ask them stuff directly. Either way back up your working rom. Sd cards are cheap now. You can always try more then 1. There is even was to use note then one rom on one phone. Read around a bit is kinda fun.

Thanks for this.... Am I correct that Xposed that it's necessary for XPrivacy? If it's just for color changes, them I won't need it. I'm not worried too much about theme colors... as long as it's readable I'm fine.
As for Android Pay, good to know.... these phones are such security cess pits, that I'm not likely to use my phone for banking or payment of any kind for some time.
Thanks again... I can't tell you how much I appreciate the help.

Xprivacy is great if you trust the school who made it and your that paranoid... At that point though you should be buying a new phone or learning to Port a more secure kernel then Linux. Or at least a security build of it. Outside that the kernel is going to be outdated to one degree or another.

You raise some good points - and again TRUST is a big issue. I'm not sure that buying a new phone even solves the problem. Ultimately you have to trust somebody, and quite frankly a bunch of passionate hackers looking over each others shoulders is likely more trustworthy than a bunch of corporate scumbags trying to market/sell your personal information. The big manufacturers (Other than Google-and I don't like their phones because they don't have a removable SD Card) are historically poor with support.
Security is often an oversight because the market doesn't value it. (Although all the high profile hacks that have occurred may change things.) "Secure" phones are such a limited market that they are hard to get, have poor support, and are obscenely expensive.
Anyway that's enough philosophy/ranting.
Vortell said:
The least secure part of most Androids is the Google framework though. I use xprivacy on older devices because it's the only reliable way to get control over permissions. The problem is there is to much for less advanced users. Some permissions look invasive but it's just the way Google put the os together. Like phone access is there even if it's just to pause sound for incoming call.
Click to collapse
You raise a very good point about the underlying design. Do I understand correctly that the permission that allows pausing the sound for an incoming call will also allow an application to make a call?! If so that's totally crazy. Again back to my comment about corporate scum bags. Google sells advertising/data services, and they are going to set up the design to be as exploitative as they can get away with. If their system was secure/privacy oriented a lot of the ecosystem would disappear.
Vortell said:
Anyways what I was talking about was gravitybox which I feel outside of Android 4 x is the best Xposed mod. In Android 4.x it's app settings and xprivacy for the permission control.

I had a quick look.... gravitybox while allowing many interesting customizations doesn't seem to deal with permissions - or did I miss something?
Vortell said:
Honestly adaway is like a firewall though it's linked to domain rather then port. No firewall should use lists like that. They should close off ports unless connections originate from you. Adaway uses an old school method of using what's called a host file to redirect the request to your own phone with no http service at they address set up there are also pretty services thought your own phone that so this aka blockad and dns66 but they use extra services so it's a tiny bit less per effective. All 3 are easy to turn off.

As I said, I run a system very similar to that on my pfSense firewall (pfBlokerNG) to limit the ad networks as an infection vector. My firewall does all the DNS and NTP for my system to somewhat restrict the number of endpoints my system is communicating with. As I discover restrictions that are too problematical I reluctantly override them or stop using the service that depends on them depending on the circumstances.

I'm less worried about ad tracking than spyware (unauthorised mic/camera/theft of data/passwords etc.), ransomware and permissions that allow my contacts and cell data to be stolen. I don't like to be accessible 24/7 anyway, so as long as the airplane mode actually works I make frequent use of it--the problem is that it may not work, and there is no way to tell since the cell radio is not easy to audit. I discovered questionable behaviour on my first android jellybean (way back in the day) by putting packet capture on the wifi. That was my first foray into modding.
Thanks again, and in advance for any assistance/advice/comments.
My X2 broke again few days ago and this time im up for new Phone because the cost of repair is to high compared for the value. Also i need more battery & a (better) working Camera. Also i need to re-new my Phone Contract, so i can get a new Phone cheap. Before i leave i wanted to share my experiences for new or senior users which use/plan to update to 8.1. This Phone is very tricky, so it may save you a lot of work ^^
--- HOW-TO: Get best 8.1 battery/experience + gps fix ---
~ During my time with victara, I tested all 8.1 ROMs for a long time, gone thru log's, tested a lot of other stuff's and this is my result: (if you want to use X2 as an daily driver) ~
~ This applies to mostly all 8.1 based ROMs ~
1. From system/vendor/lib/hw/ delete power.msm8974.so = this lib is not used by anything since long and it just constantly crashes EVERY damn time you touch the screen. After deleting, reboot device and feel the speed increase instantly.
2. If you're a not playing RAM intensive games, use the SwapTorpedo Magisk module, it gives much more speed by disabling zRAM, which in turn saves a lot of CPU uptime. Our 2Gb RAM are enough to run even 3-5 heavy or more Apps simutanesly.
3. In developer settings at the bottom there is "background check" you can disable it for allmost ALL user Apps like fb etc. Notifications will still work no worry, they go thru Play Services. Also don't disable background check for Playstore & GServices = will result in crashing loops (internally), also you should keep all the calendar and contacts sync open if you want that feature.
4. Greenify has not much power on Oreo, dont use it. Use Naptime for great standby! ( keep "disable on charger" for GoogleSync to work properly)
5. footej Camera delivers best results on this semi broken camera...
6. Put as much Apps into /system partition, because they are faster then (use "stock" GApps package) and reflash it with an updated GApps package every now & then if you update your ROM (maybe once or twice a month)
--> on startup Android automaticly detects if there's a newer version of app in /system & deletes the one in /data ^^
7. If you want fast and fixed GPS then replace the file in /system/etc with my attached one. (unzip it 1st!) Works on all ROMs for victara!
8. Our APNs list file is outdated as hell, i suggest manually edit your settings. --> in "type" add: "default, mms, supl, ims" (supl is for location services and ims for things like VoLTE config)
9. There is a wifi config file missing in /system/vendor/firmware ... /prima/HERE [i dont remember extact location], but you will see WCNSS.conf (or similar name) file which is 0 bytes... copy the original one from /system/vendor/etc/wifi/prima to that location & reboot
10. Bad in-call sound quality & low volume fix: open build.prop in /system
Code:
persist.audio.fluence.voicecall=true
change value to
Code:
persist.audio.fluence.voicecall=false
Code:
ro.config.vc_call_vol_steps=7
change value to
Code:
ro.config.vc_call_vol_steps=8
(stock default)
--> save & reboot. Profit.
12. Allways look if you can disable unused Apps in Settings BEFORE deleting them from /system/app or ../priv-app -> it can cause loops (drain)
13. for getting another hour SOT (tested on new battery, non original but legit one) use Swift black substratum theme for anything. "make use of your amoled"
... will maybe update list later
Most stable, bugless 8.1 ROM? IMO: MokeeOS, why? (good stuff)
-> based on latest LineageOS 15.1 sources, even tho they dont merge every commit from LOS (?)
-> updates every day, even for our chipset
-> EXT4 is allmost 3 times faster than f2fs
-> its rock stable, just no NFC, less flashlight toogle bug, best camera performance of all 8.1 ROMs with footej camera.
BUT YOU NEED TO MOD IT! AFTER EVERY UPDATE. (bad stuff)
- STOP it collecting YOUR usage/location data: download the App i attached. (they removed the option to stop it and added their own location & data miner lol)
-> in system tab -> MokeeSettings -> disable all of its services (stats updating & uploading services etc). It will not affect system, but theres no other way, because they really try to hide it from the user
-> you can also disable analytics from Mokee Pay App
-> after disabling the services, you can uninstall "disable service" app
Dont get me wrong, i dont like many things how they "manage" their ROM & source. Moreover they push their users to donate, for FOSS (=FreeOpenSourceSoftware, get it?). with the work others did, but rebranding, "kanging" it as theirs. (atleast they give credits to Lineage on github). Anyway if your are looking for a stable 8.1 ROM, this is your only choice...
Thank you all in Moto X 2014 forum, i will possibly go for OPO 6 (bad Camera) or S9 (bad Software support by Samsung), cant decide
peace! :fingers-crossed:
Thanks man! i followed your instructions! but i dont know how to do point 2, since i dont know how to install magisk.
Sad to see you go. Thanks for all your works to this aging phone. I still keep mine and I have moved to Moto Z2 Play. Hopefully,I can afford One Plus 6. But,it's not available here. Good luck with your new phone. I'm sure you will enjoy it more.

You simply look for Magisk v16 zip file on xda and flash it in recovery

Yeah. And then you open the app & look for modules. You can test them - and thats the great thing about Magisk - if you dont like them, you can easily uninstall them like an app.

I do not understand, because some dev say that ext4 is faster and others say it is actually f2fs ... I understand the velocity that f2fs has, but this also brings instabilities to the system, while ext4 is more stable but not is fast as f2fs ... even so they still say ext4 may be faster than f2fs on some devices.the question is, for our victara, what is the best file system?

F2fs is generally more faster than ext4,
The firstly versions of f2fs(2012-2013) aren't very stable but now f2fs is very stable on the majority of device.
In other words
In general f2fs is a bad idea only if the original kernel isn't shipped with it(not our case)

I have yet to notice a solid speed improvement when switching from f2fs on ANY android device I have owned, plus this isn't the android chef's choice, the user is the one who decides this.
"Not the proper way to fix" - This is irrelevant and only applies if we have a proper way to fix these issues, the fact of the matter is that there is no official fix and these have yet to show any signs of conflicting with anything.
Most "developers" I notice are just creating a real quick build using pre-set instructions then sometimes cherry picking from other device's github sources. I am greatful that work is being done but it makes me want to boot into my old development desktop environment and show these cat's how to make something spicy. It's as easy as adding these fixes into your environment and then building the system image with these changes included, you don't even need to use the terminal to add most of these.

Just wanted to add my 2cents, about f2fs. I generally agree with you and also i read some deep-dive articles in the last few years. To keep it short: To be able to really benefit from f2fs,
you need to have HW (storage (eMMC) chip) which is optimized for it as well as the System/Kernel. f2fs was long in development like you say until it was really better than EXT4. But i think in the case of the Moto X2,
either the HW dont plays well or there is some other problem (i dont know which version of f2fs this phone uses). But what i know, from testing (a lot) and comparing results with an EXT4 ROM, EXT4 was ALLWAYS faster.
In (storage) benchmark apps, especially the random r/w, which is quite important, EXT4 was allways better. When i runned apps like SDmaid, (collecting garbage and doing DB optimizing) it was faster (allmost 2-3 times). Same for games like GTA or others which loaded data. I even mesured it to be sure, took many SS to compare because at that time i wanted to build myself, so i was interested whats better... (than my 2nd X2 broke:crying Anyway try it for yourself & you will see. On my old S3 mini, long ago the dev also updated f2fs version, but it still wasnt better than EXT4, i remember (Lollipop times)
To adress, "that these are hacks": I dont think so because those are doing much good and nothing bad. Maybe its not the most professional way to fix it (commit it properly), but it was the best i could do by then..
- delete power.msm8974.so - really this lib was not used by anything, i spend much time digging the Mokee Sources and doing logs etc... We used the AOSP HAL and the Qualcomm one was just bugging around... It didnt affect anything to delete it by then.. (dont know about now)
- setting "persist.audio.fluence.voicecall=false" its cleaning the sound when you speak to someone in a call using the 2nd mic - but it needs that all plays nicely together. I tested it using 2 phones from friends and off was much better, maybe on stock it works well, but on 8.1 custom that was not the case. Also i found by searching a lot around that many more maintainers disabled it on their ROMs because it wasnt working properly.
- setting "ro.config.vc_call_vol_steps=8" -> its the default value in stock ROM, which i extracted...
- GPS fix was inspired by commit to many devices, which pulled settings via framework - this is the "lazy" version, direct edit. Anyway it was way faster (navigation in maps) no bad stuff in log and secure now.
- about APN file - it was really outdated... & about the wifi file, this is the only one i wasnt sure, but for G3 and S5 (which both are msm8974, custom 8.1) the full file was there?!
ALL the other things are recommendations from me (like IMO), thats why the title of this thread. Last thing, for disabling zRAM (SWAP) it was allready discussed in many tech sites that this is absolutely useless in times of 4+ gb RAM. Also it sucks CPU. In Pie its disabled now. We are on the border with 2gb so its up to personal preferences....
Anyway nice to see you working again on this great device, which i really miss I wanted to better "fix" those, with patches, builds and commits, but my knowledge was to limited to do that so i opted for a diffrent way. Also our source was to messy back then, couldnt really get anything done... and im still learning. Then it broke and that was the end for me on X2.
I wish you all the best, maybe you can do some magic on that device. Peace!
EDIT: Sorry the grammar, its late here and just saw this and had to answer..

I agree with you, f2fs in itself is faster than then many applications fail to draw the benefits is another fact (however I'm trying to do a f2fs backport from 3.10y (not very simple because motorola has done many changes departing a lot from the original)),
to talk about the fixes
in PIE I changed the powerHAL to QTI version (which solves the problem)
about wifi config no need to copy it from elsewhere that oreo and pie only see it in / vendor
for the other things i see them as optimization that the user can do only and i have nothing in contrary
Good stuff. Thanks for this. Latest mokee seems to be bug ridden, but I flashed unofficial LOS, and I'm applying these tips. Substratum won't work for me, but otherwise I'm happy so far.
Thanks again.

LineageOS is a free, community built, aftermarket firmware distribution of Android 13 (T), which is designed to increase performance and reliability over stock Android for your device.
LineageOS is based on the Android Open Source Project with extra contributions from many people within the Android community. It can be used without any need to have any Google application installed. This version comes in two flavors, GMS and vanilla. LineageOS does still include various hardware-specific code, which is also slowly being open-sourced anyway.
All the source code for LineageOS is available in the LineageOS Github repo. And if you would like to contribute to LineageOS, please visit out Gerrit Code Review.

This looks tasty!
Two Questions:
(A) Is it possible to upgrade from your other LineageOS 18.1 Rom, or is a clean install required?
(B) I do a lot of long exposure pictures and therefore use the pro mode on the stock camera app quite often. Is it included again? (The camera app in LineageOS was always very limited years ago, I don't know how it is now.)

A) you can't dirty flash, clean flash required
B) the stock cam is not included, but the aperture camera lineage 20 comes with is really great, not sure about long exposure shots tho, probably some gcam would suit that need nicely

Hi,
I installed your rom on my Mi A3 European model.
Since one week, everything went well, and overall everything works fine except:
- SMS won't send if LTE call are activate (I use google message app)
- Battery decreases when I use android auto in my car (connected on USB) whereas before (A11 xiaomi stock rom) my phone was charging
- The "night filter lighting" is too much yellow even when setting it to the minimum (0% now is ~30% before on A11 xiaomi stock rom)
- The automatic brightness works badly (I had to use macrodroid to manage this setting)
Otherwise thank you very much for your work, everything else works perfectly for the moment. It's the first time I use lineageos on my phone, how will it be for updates? (OTA or manually?)

1st and 2nd issues i haven't encountered (i don't have android auto easily accessible to test), night light can somewhat be tuned manually via the live display color calibration, auto brightness is tuned to your usage, if you have it enabled try nudging the bar to how you like it, after a while it will follow the preferences you set.
I might implement OTA, but that would still require at least one manual upgrade
Glad you enjoy the rom
Thanks a lot for the rom. Everything works perfect out of the box. I did a clean install coming from your lineageos 18 build. The new lineageos camera app is really good. I could easily install microG and universal safetynet fix. If we can't find updates here, I'll take a look at your telegram channel OTA would be a great solution to this.
Any chance of trying to go official? The immediate advantage would be the automated (weekly) builds, with free OTA upgrades, and fixes from the upstream devs when they break things on their side.

Hi,
For Android Auto, I tried with another USB cable and it charges correctly during use. It's strange the USB cable I had, worked perfectly for 2 years, I tried it again after android auto update and the phone still discharges but less... I think it comes from android Auto updates more than your rom.
Now I'm looking to recover the stock camera app from the mi A3 which allows the use of wide angle, the 48Mpx sensor and saving directy on SD card.
Anyone tried ANXCamera?
Can you release a version without the GAPPS ?
Or at least with the minimal Pico variant?
There are people who really dislike to see google everywhere and prefer to use devices that are out of the scope of constant surveillance and some of them prefer using LOS exactly with that idea in mind.

There are several problems with official, the source modifications i made aren't allowed in official (without them performance would be slower, FOD would be blinding, just to name a few)

There are several problems with official, the source modifications i made aren't allowed in official (without them performance would be slower, FOD would be blinding, just to name a few)

Thanks for your time
Edit (quick reply posted prematurely on line change, sorry): Because you already build two different versions (GMS and vanilla) maybe it would be feasible to have the "less than ideal but well supported" official version while still keeping the "optimized and overall better" fork? Just spitballing here, I am fully aware of the hurdles the device charter creates -- incidentally, those that make it through the process usually end-up being well supported all-around.
I second that, that would be wonderful. People are so disappointed by Xiaomi about the A3. A nice device with great hardware but abandoned early by Xiami and the community and lots of problems during its official life span.

I thought long and hard about applying for official, but in the end i didn't think it would succeed, there are a plethora of different officially supported roms for A3 which would all perform better than Lineage official, and i feel that official is really limiting what i can do. About mainting two versions, yes i do, theoretically even 4 versions (GMS/Vanilla for Los 18/20), but official also needs a lot of attention, they require you to spend time on it, and that would mean it would eat more of my time, doing a thing i do not believe will succeed (maybe the fod can be fixed, but geekbench scores and others cannot be easily fixed from the device tree alone)
And what do you mean about the good all-round support? Getting regular updates?
The whole device tree and vendor passes the device requirements afaik, but i don't wanna release a build with FOD that doesn't have dimming, it would really make the build failed in my eyes.
Hey thank you for this great ROM, I really love it, it has much better functionality then stock. I like the adb root feature. Of course official would be nice, but I understand your decision.
I am having only one issue: When calling with headset via audio jack the volume is way to high even on the lowest setting. Is there any way to change this? Couldn't find a proper way to adjust that.
Thank you for a reply

The volume of the mic, or the volume of what you hear?
Hey, I am interested in installing this on my Xiaomi MI A3. Does it support adding a work profile/account? This is a feature that I use on my stock rom and it is essential. Thanks

Are you talking about the launcher (some google launchers have seperate tabs at the top to pick which profile to open an app in) or system wide (when you have a logo in the status bar/qs that you can open to sign in to another "account")?
